There are certain threads inescapably woven into our experience of being alive.Simple but profound truths which make up the tapestry of what it means to be human. One of these is impermanence. The fact that everything, by nature, changes. From the seasons, to the weather, our emotions, and our relationships. We are born, we grow old, and ultimately we die. The flow of life is inherently dynamic as things are coming together, and falling apart. All the time. And while at times impermanence can be viewed in a grim light (endings, and death),Change also means new beginnings, rejuvenation, and possibility. After Winter ends, the sun comes out, flowers bloom, and the natural landscape comes to life.  And if change is truly just a part of being alive, Then the pragmatic question is:How can we relate to this shared experience in ways that lead to living well? Over the next 3 weeks we are going to explore this question (and versions of it) in depth,With some of the great teachers, physicians, writers, and leaders of our time. Together we'll discuss themes like:Learning to relax into uncertainty, Loosening our grip of control as we aspire toward long term goals with less attachment to outcomes,The possibility of appreciating the preciousness and taking in the beauty of being alive. To kick things off today you'll hear a beautiful and often moving conversation between:World renowned meditation teacher, co founder of the Insight Meditation Society and NYT Bestselling author Sharon Salzberg, And Physician, author, and Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine where she is also the Director of Inpatient Palliative Care Services, Dr. Sunita Puri. Both of whom have been the show before, but never in conversation together in this way - exploring how we might make the most of the short time we are here. For more on Sharon check out sharonsalzberg.comFor more on Sunita, including her beautiful memoir: That Good night: Life and Medicine in the Eleventh Hour please visit https://sunitapuri.com/Did you find this episode inspiring?

Welcome to episode 24 of The We Know Show where we delve into the fascinating and often controversial world of electromagnetic radiation and its impacts on our health and environment. Today, we have a very special guest, Arthur Firstenberg. Arthur is a scientist, journalist, and author renowned for his pioneering work on the health and environmental impacts of electromagnetic radiation. A graduate of Cornell University and the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine, Arthur's career path took a significant turn due to an X-ray overdose injury. For the past 38 years, he has dedicated himself to researching, consulting, and lecturing on the effects of electromagnetic radiation. Arthur is also the author of the groundbreaking book "The Invisible Rainbow," which has sold over 100,000 copies. The book traces the history of electricity from the early 1700s to the present, making a compelling case that many of today's environmental problems and major diseases are linked to electrical pollution. His work challenges us to reconsider the invisible forces that pervade our our planet and its inhabitants and their implications for our future and compels us to question long-held beliefs about the safety of electricity and to advocate for greater awareness and policy changes. With approximately 400 million electrosensitive individuals globally, Arthur calls for a unification to raise awareness and challenge the pervasive presence of wireless technology. From his early health struggles following the 2G rollout to founding the Cellular Phone Task Force, Arthur has dedicated over four decades to studying electromagnetic fields and advocating for changes in public health policies. In this episode, we explore the extensive body of research—over 42,000 studies—that underpin his concerns and the imperative to reduce exposure to electromagnetic fields, the relationship between modern diseases and electromagnetic pollution, and the often ignored biological harm caused by wireless radiation. Arthur also touches on the socio-emotional toll of our tech-saturated lives, emphasising the need for individual and collective action to protect our well-being and the environment. Join us as we unpack these crucial issues, question the impact of our technological advancements, and rally for a future less burdened by radiation. Don't miss this compelling conversation with Arthur Firstenberg, author of "The Invisible Rainbow," as we push the boundaries of understanding and advocacy. We hope you find this discussion as eye-opening as we did. The political, professional, and cultural implications of using cannabinoids remain controversial despite its increased prevalence over the last 20 years. The American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine established a working group in November 2020 to review the evidence and knowledge gaps around cannabis use in the perioperative period and develop clinical recommendations for the management of patients using cannabis in this setting.   Authors Shalini Shah, MD, MBA, and Hance Clarke, MD, FRCPC, PhD, joined RAPM Editor-in-Chief Brian Sites, MD, to discuss committee's findings, which were published in the article “ASRA Pain Medicine consensus guidelines on the management of the perioperative patient on cannabis and cannabinoids” in January 2023 (https://rapm.bmj.com/content/48/3/97).   The committee used a Delphi method with > 75% consensus to answer nine clinical questions. The members concluded that all surgical patients should be screened for cannabinoid use prior to surgery, heavy users be counseled on the negative effects on postoperative pain control, and surgery be postponed for patients who present with acute cannabis intoxication. They also advised that pregnant patients be educated on the risks of maternal cannabis on the fetus/neonate.   Dr. Shalini Shah is a professor and vice chair for the department of anesthesiology and director of perioperative services at the University of California at Irvine School of Medicine. She completed her residency in anesthesiology from Cornell University and a combined fellowship in adult and pediatric chronic pain at Harvard Medical School. She is the founder of the Pediatric Pain Program at UC Irvine and has previously served as associate program director for the pain medicine fellowship. Health careworkers ,  parents and other professionals, simply can't find time to sit in silence for 20 minutes a day. For others, intrusive thoughts make meditation painful or even impossible. So  authors Jake Eagle and Michael Amster were ecstatic to have found a clinically proven alternative, which they are introducing to the public now in a new book, THE POWER OF AWE: Overcome Burnout ,Anxiety, Ease Chronic Pain, Find Clarity & Purpose—In Less Than 1 Minute Per Day (Hachette Go; January 3, 2023; $29; ISBN: 9780306828973).In this conversation with Michael you will learn:- What is AWE.: A short little word with a powerful punch!- How Awe is essential to our health- Why we are an awe-starved culture- How a pancake flip changed everything- How to create an Awe Moment in 15 seconds- Understanding Attention. Wait. Expand- Why Awe is the new mindfulness- How to commit to a moment of awe- Why your mind resists peace.- Different levels of consciousness and how to shift from the safety consciousness.- True scientific proof that AWE transforms anxiety, stress and health issues- How to change a stressful moment with a moment of awe.Michael Amster, MD, is a physician and faculty member at Touro School of Medicine. “It's very easy for all of us to say, I'm not a good ‘blank.' We tell girls, “Don't say I am not good at math. Maybe you haven't been good at math, but you can become good at math.”  Same thing I would say to physicians. Maybe you haven't been good at negotiating, but you can become good at it. And it's a skill set that no one is born with. And everybody can come to the table with good negotiation skills, even when the other party does not have them.” - Dr. Sue Padernacht The concept of negotiation can often make physicians uncomfortable, but negotiating is often necessary when it comes to self-advocacy and self-care. When we don't ask for what we want or back down too easily, it can lead to burnout. No one is born a great negotiator, which means these skills can be learned and you can become stronger over time. Dr. Padernacht speaks in depth about the components of good negotiation so you can incorporate them into your life. Jill and Dr. Padernacht also discuss her five step framework for becoming a better negotiator in both your professional and personal life. Dr. Sue Padernacht is the CEO and founder of Ncline Leadership Strategies. She brings over 35 years of experience and expertise in leadership and negotiation, coaching, training, and facilitation to multiple levels of physicians in various medical specialties, from frontline positions to chief medical officers. Dr. Padernacht holds a Doctor of Education from the University of Southern California in organizational change and her doctorate focused on physician burnout during the COVID-19 pandemic. She's also an award-winning adjunct professor at the University of California, Irvine School of Business, and has taught dozens of leadership and negotiation courses to physicians returning to school, earning their MBAs. Dr. Padernacht's passion for negotiation began in the 1980s in New York City when the banking industry became deregulated. She was early in her career and needed to learn quickly how to help bankers learn to negotiate. During the 1990s, Dr. Padernacht worked at the L.A. Times where she was tasked with teaching negotiations to the sales organization. In the 2000s, UC Irvine retained her as a member of the faculty, where she taught a course in negotiations. Her students included both health care executive MBAs and MD MBAs and she's gotten a lot of joy from teaching negotiations to and coaching the physician population.   What's Inside: How a failure to negotiate for what you want and need leads to burnout. Dr. Padernacht's five-step framework for becoming a better negotiator. How to formulate a Plan B for when negotiations don't go your way. June 12th, 2022 marks the 55th anniversary of the landmark case Loving v. Virginia which made interracial marriage legal across the United States. We also know this day as Loving Day. This year, Loving Day has a bit of a weightier feel to it. In the recent Supreme Court leaked draft opinion on the Dobbs case, the legal reasoning that Justice Alito used to overturn Roe could be applied to undo Loving v. Virginia, signaling a new threat to interracial marriage as we know it. To those who say Loving v. Virginia will never be overturned, be cautious and vigilant. The United States has a long history of criminalizing, surveilling, and controlling Black and brown families and the mixing of races. We must both celebrate and honor our right to marry whomever we want and work to ensure its protection in the future. Today we're celebrating Loving and discussing its connectivity to the broader attacks on our ability to build our families how we see fit. We're joined by Dr. Michele Goodwin, a constitutional law scholar at the University of California, Irvine School of Law where she started and runs the Center for Biotechnology and Global Health Policy. President Richardson stated that it has been an opportunity to “hone her skills of communication and just being present.” She shared that it is important to be deliberate in getting to know people. In a digital world, she observed she cannot be as spontaneous as she can in person. Seeing 40 people in little boxes on Zoom, she had to make a more conscious effort to pay attention to who was communicating and who wasn't and to make sure she engaged with everyone on the call. However, she also noticed Zoom and the chat function made it easier for some people to communicate who might not feel comfortable speaking up in public in a group. “It provides a variety of different ways for people to engage with each other and with me.” Contrasting positions as President vs. Dean President Richardson reflected on the enormity of being the final decision maker as president, whereas when she was dean, there was a chancellor to address the most important decisions. She finds that the enormity of being president is humbling. She was surprised that her career path in law led her to become the president of a college, but said that she is guided by those times when her values and beliefs intersect with a wonderful opportunity. The Colorado College presidency was a match with her values. Access and removing barriers to success Bringing people of a broad range of backgrounds and experiences in and creating an environment where they can be successful is essential to President Richardson. The cost of higher ed is a top challenge. “If I could wave a magic wand, I would make tuition free for all students. But even with free tuition, it does not mean everyone is set up for success. How do we encourage those courageous conversations?” In addition, she tries to create a healthy culture where people acknowledge failure, learn from it, and apply that growth toward innovating. She is open and vulnerable with her team about changing decisions she has made that were not good decisions. She also likes to ask her senior leaders to share mistakes that they have made and what they learned from them. Modeling that is especially important for students, she said. “How do we encourage resilience and grit and being comfortable with failure?” When people approach her about the challenges and obstacles we are facing today, she feels optimistic because they are invested: They care enough to want solutions. Advice “The best advice I like is from Brene' Brown about ‘being in the arena. Taking the armor off and knowing you are in the arena fighting the good fight, trying to move forward. Don't be so worried about armoring yourself. True leadership is being vulnerable, showing what that looks like. Not everyone is going to like you, and that's OK.' ” She said self-reflection, and self-leadership, are more important than criticizing others. “Ask yourself, are you leading yourself the way you want others to lead?” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/innovationalliance/message

Why Leaders Need To Embrace A.I. And Its Impact On The Way We Work

Over the past few years, there's been a growing discussion around artificial intelligence (A.I.) and the potential risks that come with it. Just reading comments from Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates, and other high profile technology leaders about the potential dangers of AI would certainly seem to be reason to give pause on the continued development of this new technology. And yet, early developments in this realm would seem to demonstrate some genuine game-changers that can actually improve both the way we work and live our lives. So given both the public unease and the positive gains from these early advancements, how should leaders be viewing this technological field and what might its impact be on the way they lead? That's part of the focus of my conversation with A.I. expert Neil Sahota in this episode of my podcast "Leadership Biz Cafe". Neil serves as the United Nations Artificial Intelligence subject matter expert. He's an IBM Master Inventor, and the Chief Innovation Officer at the Irvine School of Law at the University of California. Neil is also the author of the book “Own The AI Revolution, Unlock Your Artificial Intelligence Strategy To Disrupt Your Competition”. Although a big sci-fi fan, I'm not too familiar with A.I., so I really appreciated this conversation with Neil over which we touched on the following topics: What's behind our ambivalence and fear about A.I. and the role it might play in our workplaces and society at large. How do you program computers to learn so we can ensure we're getting the outcomes we need, as opposed to some of the high-profile PR disasters we've seen with some A.I. initiatives. How A.I. can disrupt the way we work for the better and how can leaders prepare for this transformation. The early steps leaders can take to bring A.I. into their workplace to benefit both their employees and their organization. Whether A.I. is on your radar or not, what we learned in 2020 is that disruption is going to come whether you're ready for it or not. And after talking with Neil, it's become clear that A.I. will indeed be that next big wave of disruption that will soon hit your organization's shores. Noteworthy links: Buy Neil's book “Own The A.I. Revolution” on Amazon.* Learn more about Neil's work in the A.I. field - neilsahota.com. *Affiliate link used to support this podcast.

Jailhouse informants are a fixture of pop culture, helping TV prosecutors secure convictions in exchange for leniency or other favors. But the public—and by extension, juries—are largely ignorant of just how common, and how damaging, jailhouse informants are to the criminal legal system. This week, University of California, Irvine School of Law professor Alexandra Natapoff joins us to discuss how and why the reform movement is pushing back on the use of jailhouse informants in criminal cases.
