Rizwan Virk (The Simulation Hypothesis) is an entrepreneur, computer scientist, and bestselling author. Rizwan joins the Armchair Expert to discuss the VR ping pong game that tipped him off we might be in a simulation, his ten stages of singularity that the physical world isn't exactly what we think it is, and comparing the NPC versus RPG versions of the simulation. Rizwan and Dax talk about whether The Matrix was prophetic, if such AI advancement is inevitable how we would know if we're in a simulation, and the observer effect in quantum physics as illustrated by Schrödinger's Cat. Rizwan explains ancient Eastern religious and philosophical origins of the sim, the bizarre notion of consciousness that the past isn't fixed, and the Mandela Effect as evidence of the existence of alternate timelines.Follow Armchair Expert on the Wondery App or wherever you get your podcasts. Send us a textYou know that news crawler that pops up in the right-hand corner of your computer screen for those of us two dumb to turn it off. Well, an article popped up that got my interest. The 15 Best TTRPGs For One-Shot SessionsMSN pulled an article from CBR that listed the 15 Best TTRPGS for One-Shot Sessions. It lists games like Crash Pandas, Alien, Mork Borg, Blades in the Dark and Dread. It also has D&D listed along with Call of Cthulhu. It's just interesting to see an article about TTRPGs dropped in a main news media feed and then to see so many independent games getting equal time as D&D is fantastic.Christina? Does this mean anything for the independent TTRPGs or am I just reading too much into it?[Kick to Christina]In other behind the scenes news Chris Perkins and Jeremy Crawford who until recently were the Creative Director and Game Director respectively at Wizards of the Coast have taken positions with Darrington Press. It looks like both Perkins and Crawford both left Wizards with the intent to retire, but were lured back into the business by Darrington Press.https://www.enworld.org/threads/chris-perkins-and-jeremy-crawford-join-darrington-press.713839/What does this mean for Daggerheart…and why the hell would anyone come out of retirement. I can only think of three things that could get me out of retirement, A lot of Money, a lot of power, or a lot of promises. Preferably it would be a combination of all three. And speaking of Daggerheart the reviews are, well, not encouraging. Seems to be too finicky, lots of math for no reason, and very slow combat. I haven't played it yet, so don't shoot the messenger.Christina, thoughts on Daggerheart?[Kick to Christina]What do you think it means that Perkins and Crawford joined Darrington Press? And that's it, all the news, you've already heard.

New plans are made. Scene 17 Scene 18 GM Notes Thank you for sticking with us to the end of our Wesnoth campaign! I had a lot of fun scouring Battle for Wesnoth materials to flesh out our stories, so thank you to all the creators who work on the video game.  I'd also like to thank the makers of RPG supplements available from the Genesys Foundry on DriveThruRPG. In particular, I Declare by Micah-Shalom Kesselman was super helpful for fleshing out our social combats. I also got some good encounter ideas from material in Skill Adventures by David Shamp and the Skills Guide by Guillaume Tardif. And Heppa's brambles used the Area spell from Zynnythryx's Guide to Magic by J. Scott Zumwalt. Many thanks to the Genesys Community Discord, where I was able to bounce around a lot of ideas on encounter planning and custom talents. Special thanks also to Tana Pigeon for the Mythic Game Master Emulator. Many a time, the seed for a session came from two words rolled on her subject/action tables.  To my players, Lex and Danielle, thank you both for a really fun and at times deep campaign. It's hard to imagine this all started with your two bumbling elves getting lost in the Estmark Hills. Thank you for the many hours you spent outside game time thinking about your characters and sharing with me their hopes and dreams. And finally, thank you to all our listeners and readers. Your kind and appreciative words are a source of much joy to me. Our character art by Del Borovic and the map we refer to (by me!) can be found here. Daggerheart: the warm hug of fantasy RPGs—if hugs came with dramatic backstories and emotional damage. This episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast is sponsored by DungeonFlow.app — the fastest, easiest way to prep your next tabletop session. Whether you're building a dungeon, brewing an encounter, or generating the perfect trap to ruin your players' plans, DungeonFlow has you covered. Sign up today and make map prep faster than a bard's pickup line. In this final episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast's How to Play Daggerheart series, the crew takes a heartfelt and hilarious look back at everything they've learned about Darrington Press's narrative-forward RPG system. From character creation to combat chaos, hope and fear mechanics, and the quirky little swamp village where their adventure took root, the team unpacks what makes Daggerheart such a compelling system—especially for first-time players, roleplay enthusiasts, and GMs who love big feelings with their big swords. The discussion touches on the system's player-friendly mechanics, open storytelling potential, and how Daggerheart reimagines fantasy tropes through a lens of collaboration, emotion, and crunchy (but not too crunchy) dice pools. They reflect on the actual play, their favorite moments, and the ways the system encourages creativity without overwhelming newcomers. If you've ever wanted a system that feels like a stage play one minute and a chaotic improv show the next, this one's for you. Daggerheart (affiliate link) Critical Role - Age of Umbra Content from RPGBOT.net Daggerheart Review Key Takeaways: Daggerheart is ideal for first-time TTRPG players thanks to its narrative-driven, rules-light approach and clearly structured character creation. The game's Hope and Fear dice mechanic adds emotional stakes and cinematic tension to every roll, encouraging players to think about character motivation and drama. Combat is fluid, cinematic, and intentionally collaborative, with mechanics that reward creativity and teamwork rather than pure damage output. The system uses Domain and Experience cards to shape both mechanical choices and character arcs—an innovative twist on traditional leveling systems. Character creation is flexible but approachable, giving players space to express creativity without the paralysis of overwhelming options. The system excels in storytelling-focused play, making it ideal for players who want to lean into emotional arcs, moral complexity, or soap opera-level plot twists. The actual play portion of the series showed how much potential there is for improvisation, character development, and table-wide chaos (the good kind). Daggerheart's tone is welcoming, inclusive, and imaginative—making it an excellent gateway for younger players, theater kids, recovering rules lawyers, and anyone who wants to feel something at the table. A lantern illuminates the cell and reveals to Trix and Talbain that Faerlin is alive and well. It seems he's come to escort Trix to their “proper chambers”, all the while shifting their eyes to the ceiling. Trix catches on to Faerlin's hints and the pair agree to bring Talbain on as “another servant” so that Talbain can escape too. Faerlin escorts Trix and Talbain out of the cell through a hidden door in the floor, but they make a point to pull Talbain aside. He threatens Talbain with execution if Trix is harmed, but Talbain doesn't seem bothered. When Faerlin assures the pair that The Dragon is not monitoring the tunnel, Trix brings Talbain up to speed. In the treasure vault, Rou sets Cela on a nearby chest before heading over to the pile of gear. He begins to change out of the borrowed clothes and notices Mongo holding a black furred pelt. It doesn't take him long to realize that it's his pelt, treated and prepared to be used as a rug. While Rou is absorbed in his thoughts, Eight learns something new about magic from Cela. They then set their sights on the orb and take it gently in hand just as Trix and Talbain arrive through a hidden door, escorted by Faerlin.Follow Dax @gmdax, Kappa @TheKappaChris, Sebastian @sebastianyue, WallE @walle132 and Wren @ThornyDryad EPISODE CREDITS: Produced by DaxOpening theme music, editing and mixing by WrenLogo Artwork design by JessieCharacter Artwork design by RiyuskiSegment music and sound effects licensed through Epidemic SoundLINKS:Be sure to follow and tag Roads Uncharted on Bluesky!

We're celebrating our 10 year anniversary of the Podcast: and the One year anniversary of this campaign! https://www.patreon.com/posts/were-celebrating-103480248   Iron Kingdoms: Requiem combines this fantastic setting with the newest edition of the world's most popular roleplaying game. Inside this book, players will find the history of the Iron Kingdoms and information describing the current state of the world following the Claiming. Alongside these chapters is an extensive gazetteer providing detailed information on the most notable of the world's unique and fascinating locations. When making a character, players will be able to choose from many of the familiar countries and cultures of the setting. Whether a player wants to be a human, gobber, trollkin, Rhulic dwarf, ogrun, Iosan, or Nyss elf, this book provides all the rules that make these different peoples unique. When choosing a class, there are options many players are already familiar with, from the stalwart man-at-arms fighter to the free-flowing monk of the Order of the Fist. Beyond these are brand-new rules for playing the characters that make the Iron Kingdoms such a memorable setting. These new classes include, among others, gun mages, arcane mechaniks, combat alchemists, and warcasters. Alongside these options are new feats, spells, and backgrounds to make characters feel even more a part of the world of the Iron Kingdoms. They Create Worlds

TCW Podcast Episode 238 - Quake   We dive into the development of Quake, the ambitious and turbulent follow-up to Doom from ID Software. John Carmack set out to build a groundbreaking engine featuring full 3D rendering, dynamic lighting, and client-server multiplayer. This pushed the technical boundaries in a pre-GPU world. To achieve this, he brought in legendary programmer Michael Abrash from Microsoft, selling him on the vision of Quake as a step toward the metaverse as imagined in Snow Crash. Meanwhile, John Romero envisioned Quake as a fantasy RPG inspired by a character from his D&D campaign, but lack of direction and his growing obsession with Deathmatch led to team frustration and eventual fallout. The result was a game that redefined first-person shooters and laid the groundwork for decades of engine development. It also marked the end of an era at ID with the ouster of John Romero.   TCW 030 - DOOM!: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/doom-1479057917/ TCW 197 - The ID of Game Development: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/the-id-of-game-development/ Doom States and DeHackEd: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTa3diypjv4 P2P vs Dedicated Servers?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tt3ZLHKcP2U Token Ring - The Betamax of Networking: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjLctlmZSp4 Artie - The Strongest Man In the World: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6Bh3LskNbs Space Strike (DOS): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtDdEuKFQps Cosmic Crusader (DOS): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKOTa5iQAw8 Big Top (DOS): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXUCacgF72M Snack Attack II (DOS): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hu-SEjcnnjo So You Haven't Read "Snow Crash": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nO64ZhBYy9E Ramblings in Realtime by Michael Abrash: https://www.bluesnews.com/abrash/ QuakeWorld Launch Event: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXw6BkZ-gdY Quake (DOS 6.22): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyLC1vR9oGk Quake Longplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7GagGXXUtI Excerpt Quake Postmortem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2OE-74bTQw   New episodes are on the 1st and 15th of every month!   TCW Email: feedback@theycreateworlds.com  Twitter: @tcwpodcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theycreateworlds Alex's Video Game History Blog: http://videogamehistorian.wordpress.com Alex's book, published Dec 2019, is available at CRC Press and at major on-line retailers: http://bit.ly/TCWBOOK1     Intro Music: Josh Woodward - Airplane Mode -  Music - "Airplane Mode" by Josh Woodward. A conversation involving such dramatic shifts in the brand requires as much nuance as we can gather! Summoned to the realm of the Dukes are none other than Last Stand Media's own Gene Park and Rick Hoeg to help us sift through the fallout of last week's Xbox layoffs. Any single one of these stories could be our lead for the week, but let's get it started with Microsoft's $80 billion investment in their AI infrastructure. Sadly, it has been reported that this is the root cause of the layoffs. Naturally, an investment to the tune of almost $12 billion more than Activision doesn't sneak up on you. The question we're left asking in wake of these claims is how leadership was able to blindside staff within Xbox despite likely knowing about these impending changes for months. Why meet with teams like Zenimax Online Studios and Romero Games, prepare hardware investments, create long term production plans only to axe them by the following weekend? A fired up Rick Hoeg will certainly let us know how he feels on the matter (IYKYK). Speaking of Zenimax Online Studios, we now have details on the canceled Project Blackbird to parse through thanks to multiple insider reports. Blackbird was an online, open world RPG focusing on shooting and traversal mechanics with a planned release window of 2028. With the pedigree of this studio being clear and the risk being low compared to most live service initiatives out there, why shut down something with such great potential? Well, perhaps that's because in a "hits only" business, you need to go with the guarantee. There's no greater guarantee for money than the Fallout IP and, finally, it appears Xbox has come to their senses. Multiple Fallout games are in production! Reason for celebration, no? We'll get to that. Plus, our thoughts on Helldivers 2 coming to Xbox, a Halo project potentially in trouble, and returning once more to the "Great Game Pass Profitability Debate."
