Oh man, you can't escape from Final Fantasy content these days, can you? It's everywhere! Andy is FF-Curious though and wants to know more. So, he asked his good friend Chris to take him through one of them. You know, to see what was cool. Chris chooses Final Fantasy 7. It's Chris's favorite from the series. Let's listen together to Chris' dubious FF7 claims. We talked about more Final Fantasy through the lens of its recent Magic the Gathering release, over on Andy's other podcast. Much of Angela Washko's work begins with a simple question: What if we took the media we consume every day — the video games, the reality shows, the online chatrooms — as seriously as we take traditional art spaces? What if we examined them not just as distractions or products but as public arenas where identity, power and belonging are actively negotiated? With a practice that spans performance, social engagement, video games and film, Angela has spent more than a decade doing just that. Her work doesn't just critique digital culture from the outside; it embeds itself within it, creating space for dialogue in places not usually known for nuance. Whether she's convening feminist councils in the fantasy worlds of online gaming or crafting interactive experiences from the textures of real life, her projects ask how we behave when no one — or everyone — is watching. In 2012 she launched The Council on Gender Sensitivity and Behavioral Awareness in World of Warcraft, an in-game social practice project that sparked multi-hour dialogues between initially hostile players. Later she created The Game: The Game, an RPG in which a player could try to negotiate a bar packed full of male pickup artists following the same seduction playbook. And just last year, fascinated by the allure and promises of reality television, she directed her first documentary, “Workhorse Queen,” about a few members of the tightknit drag community in Rochester, NY and their complicated relationship with “RuPaul's Drag Race” and the commerce of 21st century drag celebrity. In this interview, Angela, now a full professor and the MFA Program Director at the Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan, reflects on how she found her voice as an artist inside a male-dominated gaming culture, why she continues to work in and not against the media she critiques and how becoming a mother during a global crisis reshaped her ideas of creativity, care and time.https://angelawashko.com/home.html

In this episode of Tabletop Tune Up, Mark and Ben talk about player-crafted items. Crafting is a part of many RPGs, but it's not often discussed in relation to the party's advancement or storytelling. This week we discuss a number of factors to think about when considering what kinds of items your players might craft. We consider the inputs necessary (time and materials) and how that can generate great stories, and we also talk about how to strike a balance between items that are overpowered (and unbalancing for your game) or underpowered (and hence not worth players' putting in the work). Join us for a fascinating conversation about how crafting can make your game richer and more engaging for your players' craftspeople.
Send us a textI have a thing for Kickstarter. I find myself backing a lot of roleplaying games so it's not unusual for me to browsing the new Kickstarters looking for something that might spark my imagination. And that's when I saw it. Singularity.A brand-new massive adventure for Mongoose Traveller.Longtime listeners know our love of Traveller on this show and you might have even listened to our three part “Anatomy of a Campaign” series where we talked you through our Pirates of Drinax campaign. The idea of another massive campaign intrigued me and the more I read through the description the more I was hooked.I backed it.I then brought it to the podcast. Mike, Christina and I talked briefly about Singularity in S3E11 on You Heard it Here Last, but that didn't quite scratch the itch enough. So I reached out to Mongoose Publishing and spoke to Mathew Sprange the Managing Director who put me in touch with the author of Singularity Chris Griffen.Chris was nice enough to take the time to sit down and talk with me about this new campaign setting.

One dark day in the TBC Patreon chat dungeons, our Patron Austin scrawled the following message to us: "...[D]uring the 80s there was a guy literally named Dick Wulf (Not to be confused with law and order producer and writer Dick Wolf) who made a Christian version of D&D called Dragonraid. There's very little documentation online about what the game system was like but it did exist and from what I can gather there was some sort of mechanic involving casting spells by reciting bible verses. Cut to like 2020, some forty years later, some Christian company approaches Dick Wulf to buy the intellectual rights to his fantasy world so they can rebrand as LightRaider the new Christian fantasy RPG sensation! For the low low price of 57.99! And to build hype as they were creating the actual system, they created LightRaider Academy, a trilogy of YA Novels." Based on this information, Chris could have read a LightRaider Academy novel, but, no - he had to spread the suffering around. So, he recruited his friends Phoebe and Kami to support Paris on an adventure into the world of DragonRaid. Our party gets to roll a single die and encounter terrifying dangers such as orcs, wolves, racist charicatures, and fat shaming! Don't even think about eating pie - literally. In addition to being our GM, Chris also did all of the scoring for today's episode. Remember that you can hire him at Oselka Sound for all of your composition, sound design, editing, music teaching, and session work needs. If you enjoyed our guests, you can find Phoebe on Instagram @phoebe.danskin and Kami on Twitch @maniacalpillow In addition to our usual barnyard language, today's episode includes discussion of Christianity, fatphobia, and anti-semitism.

On this week's Random Encounter, we're discussing a mobile-based gacha spinoff of a beloved JRPG and a Wii U classic that has finally made its way to a modern console!Persona 5 has more than its share of spinoffs, including Persona 5 Royal, Persona 5 Strikers, Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight, and Persona 5 Tactica, and now there is a new game to add to the list: Persona 5: The Phantom X. This mobile and PC game is a full-fledged JRPG, but one with dozens of gacha mechanics in the way of a smooth gameplay experience. Was Audra able to get over these revenue traps to enjoy the solid game beneath? And then Ben is here to talk about the first 100 in RPGFan history: Xenoblade Chronicles X! This classic JRPG was released on the Wii U, where no one really played it (but to be fair, no one really played the Wii U either). But now it's available on the Nintendo Switch, so no one has an excuse not to play this spectacular early entry in the long-running, beloved Xenoblade series! Before diving into the Super Nintendo library, I'm taking a moment to reflect on what the console meant to me growing up. From moving into a new home and finding my first real friends, to renting games based on box art and falling in love with RPG's. Welcome to #RPGaDAY2025! #RPGaDAY2025 starts on August 1st and many folks will be posting for it one day at a time through the month, while many others share responses in ways that take some preparation time. Please take some time and help spread the news on your social media What is RPGaDAY? Now moving into 12th year, RPGaDAY was launched by David F. Chapman who may be known to you from his work for Cubicle 7 on the long-lived Doctor Who RPG with its innovative Vortex system, this year's new adaptaton of the Laundry Files series to an RPG for C7, for his own intriguing game W.I.L.D., or his days in indie comics. Along the way, I joined in to help. In the ten years since, David and I have been pleased, surprised, and often humbled by how many people in how many places have taken part in this event year after year. Each day this month, roleplaying enthusiasts, industrialists and gamers work from the prompt list below to take inspiration from each of the 31 prompts to post positively in affirmation of the joys and benefits of RPGs and the relationships and skills we have developed as a result. Wet Change, sans Del, set out east towards the town of Bree. They happened upon the violent willow tree, decided not to burn it down just yet, and travelled across a difficult landscape until they came across a group of goblins. Not wanting to fight, Tyler and Adam tried to run away, and Guy climbed a tree, but still they were discovered. Adam and Guy threw Baguettes and branches, but it was only the rising sun that had the strange creatures drawing back into cover. As the goblins scrambled away, a strange dog-like man in their camp broke free. Will Adam's stroke of inspiration allow him to calm and befriend this feral beast-man? Featuring players Tyler Hewitt, Del Borovic, Guy Bradford, and Adam McNamara, and Dungeon Master Tom McGee. CW:This episode deals with character death. While we discuss these things above table and feel safe exploring them, we realize this might be difficult for some audience members. Please skip 30:03 to 32:51 if this would be triggering for you. As always, your safety and enjoyment is important to us.As Eight and Trix plummet toward a pool of molten earth the rest of the party races to help them. Talbain tosses a grappling hook, but it breaks. Realizing Trix is falling, Eight releases the orb into Rou's possession and summons a portal underneath their friend. Talbain and Rou fumble a little but are able to save the orb from dropping below. Trix manages to angle themselves into the portal and tumbles out on their butt behind Rou and Talbain. As Trix is rescued, Mongo reaches out and catches Eight's cape, leaving them to dangle high above the molten lake below.Eight takes the moment of stability to toss the ring through the portal, but watches helplessly when the toss misses its mark and the ring hurtles into the depths below. A blinding light flashes in the cavern momentarily. As everyone's sight returns Eight slips from Mongo's grasp. Talbain makes one more desperate attempt to grab Eight but misses the mark and the group is left to watch in horror as their friend disappears into the lava.A third color of smoke filters into the orb, the copper rings whir and make a clicking noise, the smell of sulfur emits from the orb. Behind them they hear a deep chuckle, and the owner is very large, barely able to fit within the cavern. The person thanks the party for freeing them, and helps them out of the cavern into the Dread Wastes. The stranger calls themselves Umé, and offers a boon as thanks for their freedom. Only Talbain takes them up on the offer, and Rou is broken hearted by his friend's choice. With Del away on a mysterious adventure of her own, the rest of the troupe rested at Bombadil's house and equipped themselves for the task ahead. Tolkien gave Tyler a broken sword, Guy had the forethought to ask for food and water, and Adam dressed himself in an improvised hat and poorly-constructed toga. The troupe departed and found themselves naturally taking on specific roles within the group: Tyler as the Guide, Adam as the resourceful Hunter, and Guy as the observant Scout. They've been warned to stay off the main road, but can Wet Change avoid the Black Rider, survive the trek to Bree, and find the ringbearer at The Prancing Pony?
