Have you ever considered who Nintendo should acquire next? Over the years, Nintendo has brought some longtime partners fully in-house, such as Next Level Games, which they officially acquired in 2021, and Monolith Soft, which joined Nintendo in 2007 after being acquired from Bandai Namco. But there are still a few studios that feel like they belong under the Nintendo umbrella. Think HAL Laboratory, the team behind Kirby and a close Nintendo partner since the early days; PlatinumGames, known for titles like Bayonetta 2 and Astral Chain (both Nintendo-published); or even Atlus, the RPG powerhouse behind Persona and Shin Megami Tensei. Some fans even toss around Sega as a wild “what-if” scenario, given their long history of collaboration and friendly rivalry. So let's talk about it — which studios make the most sense for Nintendo to acquire, and which ones would completely shake things up?

In Stars and Time is a time loop RPG from insertdisc5, that follows a ragtag found-family of adventurers, at the very end of their long quest to defeat The King. You play as Siffrin, the party's rogue, as they try to piece together why they find themselves stuck living out the same day over and over again. The writing is heartfelt and at times heartbreaking, the characters are charming, and the game features a strangely addictive system for turn-based combat. Thank you for tuning in to episode 54!! In this episode, Kate and Emily are joined by special guest Rachel Watts, to talk about this fascinating time loop experience. But before they dive into the game, the three have lots of guinea pig and indie game related topics to discuss! Wealthy farmers and town heroes Nicky and Eric take a deep, mermaid-ish type dive into Coral Island. Coral Island is a 2023 farming simulation game developed by Stairway Games and published by Humble Games. Set on a tropical island, the game features mechanics similar to other farming simulators, such as Stardew Valley.Press Any Button hosts Nicky (a new gamer) and Eric (a lifetime gamer) are a married couple who both love video games. For every video game they will discuss its past (history of the game, developers story, and fun facts), present (game play, game review and strategy), and future (will there be a sequel?? A movie?)  BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE… Every game also comes with a challenge presented by the host that chose the game. If the challenge is not completed then whoever failed has to do a video game rap! So if you want to learn more about video games, hear some nerdy video game raps, or just have a good time this is the podcast for you. So there's four of these, but only the second is numbered? The previous episode had some fantastic beasts, but this one is set in the century of dragons. That's right, the Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button has selected the fourth title in Bioware's RPG franchise for assessment on this episode! Well, it's the fourth one if you leave out Awakening and that freemium mobile game, but most of the franchise isn't numbered anyway, so is anyone keeping track? Further diverging from its early roots as a tactical RPG, this latest entry in the series is decidedly an action RPG. Unlike previous installments, combat control is focused on just one character and the design team dropped the open world approach for something that's much more linear. Will these changes be embraced by the modern audience? More to the point, will Tom and Chris prefer the mandated hour here over the time they spent with Dragon Age II way back in episode 105? There's no need for additional suspense, the answer is available now in their review, one must simply press play to find out! What do you think? Ever wondered what happens when you cross a high-fantasy campaign setting, a Louisiana bayou, and a magical eel with moonshine for blood? The RPGBOT crew found out the hard way when they sat down with Drew Foulke, the founder of Norse Foundry and Hexed Publishing, to talk about his new system-agnostic roleplaying world: Titanskeep. It's a world where gods and titans feud like divorced parents with cosmic custody issues, and adventurers are just trying to survive long enough to figure out whether the lich-titan is actually the good guy. Your support helps keep the dice rolling (and the Billy Eels wiggling). Show Notes In this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, hosts Randall James, Tyler Kamstra, and Ash Ely sit down with Drew Foulke, founder of Norse Foundry and Hexed Publishing, to explore the upcoming Titanskeep campaign setting — a high-fantasy, system-agnostic world designed for Dungeons & Dragons (5e/2024), Pathfinder 2e, and beyond. Titanskeep, set in the living world of Kalidor, pits gods against titans in a divine power struggle that reshapes the world's fate. Players can join guilds, align with deities, or swear loyalty to mighty titans — and every choice changes the ongoing narrative. Built to support convention-based raid events, local game store play, and ongoing modular releases, Titanskeep promises a living campaign ecosystem that evolves through player decisions. Drew discusses Hexed Publishing's approach to system-agnostic design, collaboration with industry legends like Ed Greenwood, Keith Baker, B. Dave Walters, and Deven Rue, and his goal of producing a constantly supported RPG world rather than a one-and-done campaign book. Tyler shares his own experience designing monsters for the Houdan region, a New Orleans-meets-Venice bayou crawling with illusion-magic, giant bugs, and the now-legendary Billy Eel — complete with random mutations and "moonshine in its veins." Throughout the conversation, the hosts and Drew dive into: The challenge of creating a 5e and Pathfinder 2e compatible RPG setting. The use of guild systems, living world events, and player-driven raids. The design philosophy of Norse Foundry: making dice and props that players actually use. The plan for Titanskeep's Kickstarter (October 2026), free Patreon content, and playtesting rewards. The future of Hexed Publishing, from Gazetteers to modular adventure paths, and how community playtesting shapes their development. Key Takeaways System-Agnostic Design: Titanskeep bridges 5e, 2024 D&D, and Pathfinder 2e, with future support for systems like Daggerheart, Savage Worlds, and Fate. High Fantasy, Low Tech: Magic drives Titanskeep's world; technology exists only where titans allow it. Living World Structure: Players influence world events through guilds, deities, and Titan allegiance — shaping global outcomes. Convention Integration: The setting includes a raid-style convention system, where multiple tables impact shared encounters and titanic battles. Collaborative Worldbuilding: Drew enlisted industry veterans like Ed Greenwood, Keith Baker, B. Dave Walters, Jay Foster, Deven Rue, and Crystal Sully. Player Rewards: Free adventures, Patreon-exclusive ancestries, and physical props (like keys, pins, and holy symbols) connect the digital world to your table. The Billy Eel Legacy: A chaotic creature from the Houdan region, proof that player imagination and worldbuilding can get delightfully weird. With the release of Dragon Quest I & II HD 2D, I decided to try out all the previous versions of the game to compare. What I found is an endlessly charming little RPG that I have absolutely fallen in love with. While I've played many Dragon Quest games before (DQ5, DQ8, DQ9, and DQ11), it's the first game that has now made me a fan for life. What a fantastic game and what a great remake to introduce a new generation to this timeless classic! Time Codes: 1. Intro (0:00) 2. The History Of Dragon Quest Remakes (02:51) 3. Matty returns to the podcast and things get spicy fast as we dive into the evolving craft of tabletop RPGs. Send us a textI can still remember the first time I stood in front of a classroom filled with my peers. I had spent the time researching and learning, writing and organizing, and now it was time to teach. A dozen of my co-workers, people that I spent hours with, ate lunches with, and worked with every day. But this was something different. Standing in front of the classroom. All eyes on me, the looks on their faces were somewhere between anticipation and boredom. I could almost see their thoughts, “Why do I have to be here?” “Why should I listen to this guy?” “This is going to suck.”I remember telling myself, It's no different than running a game, Steve. Grab their attention, make your point, and give them what they came for.I've been doing that now for over 25 years.I wasn't born a good communicator. I stuttered as a child, and because of that I was not outgoing in the classroom. I rarely asked questions and would damn near run away screaming when it came to making any kind of public statement. But when I would sit down and roleplay with my friends, that changed. It was like I was a different person. I was able to communicate and I wasn't scared. I actually enjoyed it. Soon I would become the forever game master and that just meant more practice. Because that was what it was, practice.I know for a fact if I didn't roleplay I wouldn't be a national instructor today. That class with 12 people in 1999 was only the beginning. I have done 2-hour presentations to auditoriums with over 1200 people. All of those hours of gaming and communicating gave me the skills and confidence I needed for my future. We can learn a lot from roleplaying.Last time, Mike and I talked about the Satanic Panic and all the things the haters said was wrong with roleplaying so today, Mike, Dr. Christina and I are going to talk about all of the good things you get by table top roleplaying.Let's start with you Mike, What's one thing that you can do today because of roleplaying?[Kick to Mike]Christina, you literally got your doctorate in this stuff so when we talk about the things we can learn from table top roleplaying, where should we start?[Kick to Christina]

This week on Critical Arcade, Nick and Dave dust off their swords, shine their armor, and set out on a nostalgic journey through the land of Alefgard in “Dragon Quest I & II Remake.” Square Enix has taken two of the most important JRPGs ever made and given them the full HD-2D treatment—complete with shimmering pixel art, dynamic lighting, and a soundtrack that will make even the slimes tear up a little. In Dragon Quest I, our brave hosts take on the role of the legendary descendant of Erdrick, tasked with defeating the evil Dragonlord and restoring peace to a world teetering on the edge of ruin. Along the way, they'll explore charming towns, uncover ancient secrets, and save a princess who's just a little too comfortable being kidnapped. Then, as the story seamlessly continues into Dragon Quest II, the stakes—and the party size—grow. Joined by three royal companions, the adventure expands across continents, oceans, and a world haunted by the legacy of the first hero. Monsters get tougher, castles get grander, and Dave's inventory management skills are tested like never before. Meanwhile, Nick can't stop humming the battle theme and pretending he's composing a full orchestra.Together, they'll uncover how these two stories intertwine, setting the foundation for decades of RPG storytelling. Will Dave survive the grind without rage-quitting? Will Nick finally admit that “random encounters” are not a personal attack? Tune in as they laugh, strategize, and occasionally cry their way through one of gaming's most legendary remakes—where every slime defeated brings them one step closer to destiny. Hosted on Acast. In this episode, Jeff Linville — co-founder of Ritual Studios — returns to Game Dev Advice to talk about the journey behind his band-inspired RPG Fretless: The Wrath of Riffson. From starting a studio with college friends to launching worldwide with French publisher Playdigious, Jeff shares the hard-won lessons of taking the leap into full-time indie development. We go into depth on what it really takes to form a studio, ship a first game, and survive the chaos between passion and business reality. * Founding Ritual Studios after meeting at Columbia College Chicago * How Fretless mixes music, RPG, and deck-building mechanics into one ambitious indie game * The moment they quit their jobs to “really do it” and chase a publishing deal * Lessons learned about funding, taxes, lawyers, and running a real company * Building a standout pitch deck and landing a deal with Playdigious in France * Managing bugs, Steam feedback, and localization into seven languages * Outsourcing art and engineering — and why it's harder than it looks * Choosing FMOD over Wwise for advanced Unity audio integration * Why getting your game playable early beats endless siloed prototyping * How Cardio Ex shaped Jeff's music-driven sound design * Thoughts on AI tools in audio, from noise cleanup to creative limits * Recording real medical equipment sounds * Favorite soundtracks: Hyper Light Drifter and Guild Wars 1 * Current go-to games: Pillars of Eternity and Lord of the Rings Online * Reflections on Mortal Kombat, Midway Games, and how player nostalgia keeps art alive * Advice for anyone dreaming of going indie: “Be ready for it — it's a business.”

You're listening to Bardtenders! In this episode of "The Mixing Glass", Lenny Gotter discusses his career as an entrepreneur. From opening a craft distillery, to founding 1985 Games, to launching successful Kickstarter projects - Lenny is a wealth of knowledge for anyone looking to take the next steps in their career. We also take a deeper look into Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass. Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass is the first campaign setting to come from 1985 Games. While it's written to work with 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons, a primarily combat focused RPG system, it stands out as being uniquely the contrary. Obojima is what we've coined as “leisure fantasy,” meaning that it's designed to be a slice of life more than the kind of campaign where you wage a bloody war across the realms to punch god.  The island of Obojima is a whimsical place inspired by classic anime and adventure video games. It's an idyllic land filled with playful spirits, memorable characters, and vibrant locations. This lo-fi campaign emboldens adventures to be creative, go at their own pace, and take it easy. Parties are encouraged to get to know NPCs, participate in town activities, learn, grow, and explore. One of the biggest draws of Obojima is the brand-new, one-of-a-kind potion brewing system. Featuring over 60 ingredients that can be found throughout the island and can be used to brew 180 unique potions. The potions can be used as utility, combat enhancers, or can even cause hilarious and whimsical effects. The whole in-depth system is fun, easy to learn, and comes with delightful descriptions, location info, and difficulties of procuring for every ingredient and brewable potion. Some ingredients can be a whole adventure in and of themselves to get a hold of! The Obojima potion brewing system can also be seamlessly added to any 5th edition campaign to make more fun for alchemists, herbalists, and brewmasters in the party.Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass is currently available in hardcover and PDF form on their website. It's also available in digital format on DNDBeyond and Alchemy. ------------Lenny Gotter has been a serial entrepreneur for over 25 years. One of the highlights includes opening the first craft distillery to go public in 2014. Lenny Gotter is also the founder 1985 Games and founded the company in 2019. Under his leadership as CEO, the company has consistently executed a series of successful product launches on Kickstarter, as well as building a fulfillment and distribution network in the US and abroad. Lenny has been an avid gamer since 1985 and he loves to run and play role-playing games. ----------Don't miss out on any of the action!  Head to www.bardtender.com to stay up to date with all of the Bardtender content, find resources for mental and physical well-being, get access to education materials, and check out what all of our bards are up to! Support the show
