Guest: Michael Toth. Toth of the Civitas Institute warns against new "climate superfund" legislation in states like New York, which seeks to retroactively tax fossil fuel companies for global warming. He characterizes these funds as unconstitutional attempts to regulate global emissions at the state level, arguing they will function as slush funds that drive up energy costs.1903 SANTA BARBARA

Montana's largest utility has released a draft plan of how it will generate power for the next two decades. It's soliciting public comments on that plan in meetings across the state.
Part 1 of a story that will unravel into something you won't be able to stop thinking about. In this episode, Jayna introduces a woman very close to her heart — a trusted member of her makeup team and a friend who, like so many of us, wanted love badly enough she silenced her own intuition. What begins as a romantic, hopeful meeting with a man who feels like "the one" quickly becomes the opening chapter of a much bigger, darker, and more complicated journey. This episode is the calm before the storm — the butterflies, the chemistry, the moments that feel fated… and the tiny red flags that are easy to dismiss when you're in too deep. It lays the emotional groundwork for a multi-part series that will unfold into betrayal, endurance, and the devastating cost of abandoning yourself for love. By the end, you'll be asking one question: is this the man she marries… or the man who changes her forever? Buckle up, because what's coming next will have you on the edge of your seat.

On today's podcast:1) President Trump said he was looking to “de-escalate” in Minnesota with a reshuffle of the leadership running his deportation effort in the state following widespread outcry over the killing of two US citizens by federal agents. Still, the president denied he was pulling back his immigration crackdown and said that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem would remain in her post, as he looked to signal a recalibration rather than a retreat in the aftermath of the Jan. 24 fatal shooting of 37-year-old intensive care nurse Alex Pretti by a Border Patrol agent during an enforcement operation. Meantime, US Representative Ilhan Omar was charged at by a man who appeared to squirt an unknown liquid on her during a town hall gathering in Minneapolis, as she called for consequences for the federal officials overseeing President Trump’s aggressive immigration policies.2) President Trump’s relaxed tone about the dollar selloff is fueling speculation the US currency is at the start of a longer-term decline. The dollar suffered its deepest one-day drop since last year’s tariff rollout after Trump said on Tuesday he didn’t think the currency had weakened excessively. Bloomberg’s dollar gauge slid as much as 1.2% as the comments sapped the appeal of the greenback and US Treasuries — boosting what has become known as the debasement trade. The dollar’s recent decline is great for US businesses, Trump told reporters in Iowa. While that’s in line with previous commentary from US officials, his remarks moved currency markets late Tuesday, partly because they appeared to validate the steep decline in the greenback in recent sessions.3) Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell may try to direct attention back to the economy this week, with the US central bank widely expected to hold interest rates steady after three straight reductions. But Powell’s first press conference since the Fed was served grand jury subpoenas — and coming days after the Supreme Court heard arguments regarding the attempted removal of another Fed governor — is bound to include questions about political pressure, central bank independence and what the Fed chief plans to do after his term as chair ends in May. A decision to hold rates steady this month is likely to garner broad support from policymakers following a series of contentious cuts. While the majority of officials agreed in those instances to backstop a weakening labor market, another group of policymakers pushed for the focus to remain on elevated inflation.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The United States has a new National Defense Strategy. Unfortunately, that of the Chinese Communist Party is unchanged. According to the document released by the Department of War on January 23rd, China is no longer this country's “most significant strategic competitor.” Even that formulation used by the Biden administration in its 2022 counterpart NDS downplayed the reality that the CCP is our mortal enemy. The Trump administration has decided to prioritize the security of the Western hemisphere, saying unspecified “strength” will deter China and promote “visionary and realistic diplomacy, thereby setting conditions for a balance of power in the Indo-Pacific that allows all [the region's nations] to enjoy a decent peace.” Unfortunately, the Chinese Communists are not interested in a decent peace. They seek our destruction, including by continuing their penetration and domination of our hemisphere. America needs a war-footing now. This is Frank Gaffney.

The General Services Administration is seeking input from the technology reseller community on how the agency can improve the federal procurement process, particularly regarding value-added resellers (VARs). The GSA issued a request for information Thursday, stating that it hopes to receive cost-reduction strategies for products resold to the government rather than those purchased directly from vendors. VARs, a type of government reseller, purchase infrastructure or software from original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and enhance them with certain features or services before reselling to the government. An analysis of major VARs found significant differences in the services offered and markup percentages applied to the vendor pricing, according to the RFI. The market research will help determine whether the agency needs additional controls to ensure the government receives fair and reasonable pricing when markups exceed a specified percentage threshold, per the document. “The RFI seeks to gain a clearer understanding of the value added by resellers, and the resulting impact of these services on pricing and the ability to meet the government's requirements,” GSA wrote in a press release Thursday. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is “trying to automate as many of our business functions as possible,” the Department of Homeland Security component's top IT official said at an event Thursday in Washington, D.C. Dustin Goetz, ICE's chief information officer, said onstage during a Homeland Security and Defense Forum event that the agency is already tapping its automation toolset for compliance checks on applications, code review and identification of issues in infrastructure — but it's now looking to beef up capabilities. Goetz pointed to lower-level roles in cybersecurity, the service desk and administrative functions as prime areas for automation, saying those things can be automated with the data the agency currently has, it just needs to train models. Additionally, ICE has started using an internal AI chatbot called Stella, a project led by the DHS division's chief innovation and AI officer. The agency is open to bringing on industry partners to sharpen the tool and help ICE reach its automation goals. The Daily Scoop Podcast is available every Monday-Friday afternoon. On today's podcast:1) President Trump accepted Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado’s Nobel Peace Prize medal at a White House meeting on Thursday as she tries to get back in his good graces while the future of her country is being shaped by the US. Trump, in a social media post hours later, called it a “great honor” to meet Machado, and described her as a “wonderful woman who has been through so much.” Machado, who has been shut out of Venezuela’s leadership transition since US forces ousted President Nicolas Maduro on Jan. 3, said she gave Trump the medal as “a recognition of his unique commitment with our freedom.” 2) Denmark and Greenland are stepping up lobbying of US lawmakers in an effort to head off President Trump’s push to take control of Greenland. A group of US senators is set to meet members of the Danish parliament in Copenhagen on Friday. The trip follows a week of meetings in Washington by Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen with members of Congress on the heels of talks with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Greenland’s foreign minister, Vivian Motzfeldt, also participated. High-level talks between Denmark, Greenland and the US earlier this week ended in a stalemate over the future of the world’s largest island, though officials agreed to set up a working group to manage the diplomatic dispute. Trump has repeatedly insisted the US needs to control the territory, an ambition that remains unresolved and has been rejected time and again by both Copenhagen and Nuuk.3) President Trump threatened to deploy US military forces to Minnesota in order to quell protests in response to violent encounters involving federal immigration agents. The 1807 law allows the president to use regular military troops on US soil for domestic law enforcement. It was last invoked during the 1992 riots in Los Angeles. Trump’s ultimatum could further fray tensions in Minneapolis, where on Wednesday a federal officer shot a man in the leg. The incident occurred one week after the fatal shooting of a local woman who was a US citizen by an ICE agent, which touched off the demonstrations. Out of God's good order described in Genesis 2, the devil begins to work disorder in Genesis 3. He cunningly tempts the woman to question God's Word before blatantly claiming that God's Word is evil and false. Although the woman initially recalls God's Word, she is deceived into believing the devil's lie, and her husband shockingly sins right along with her. The effects are disastrous, but the LORD God is quick with His mercy. He calls His children to repentance, and He promises that He will send the Offspring of the woman to suffer for His people and so defeat sin, death, and devil. Rev. David Appold, pastor at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Paducah, KY, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Genesis 3:1-15. To learn more about St. Paul's in Paducah, visit stpaulpaducah.org. “In the Beginning” is a series on Sharper Iron that studies Genesis. The first book of Moses sets the stage for God's entire story of salvation. As we learn the beginning of the story, God prepares us to receive the fulfillment of the story: Jesus Christ, the Offspring of the woman who has crushed our enemy's head. Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Submit comments or questions to: listener@kfuo.org

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said the U.S. central bank was served with grand jury subpoenas by the Department of Justice on Jan. 9. Powell confirmed in a statement on Jan. 11 that officials threatened a criminal indictment over his Senate Banking Committee testimony in June 2025. Powell noted the testimony “concerned, in part, a multi-year project to renovate historic Federal Reserve office buildings.” The central bank chief dismissed the idea that this criminal probe was driven by his testimony or the renovation, saying it's connected to his position on interest rates.President Donald Trump said on Sunday that Iran's leadership has contacted his administration to seek negotiations after he warned of possible military action in the wake of mass protests in Iran.
