Hello everyone!! Welcome to the first episode of The Left Page for 2023!!To start the year well, we chat about the excellent novel (novella?) by P. Djèlí Clark "The Haunting of Tram Car 015"! A great alternate history story that considers a much more magical Cairo, and world, in the 1910s, allowing for many opportunities of fighting back against colonization and other radical experiences! And, frankly, decolonization really is one of the best possible ways for alt-history to go, as we conclude!Have fun!Do check out the author's short story The Angle of Khan el-Khalili!https://www.tor.com/2021/04/28/the-angel-of-khan-el-khalili-p-djeli-clark/Please support our Patreon if you're interested and want access to early content and the bonus Reading Corners! https://www.patreon.com/leftpage Intro Music: Gymnopédie Nº1, Erik Satie, 1888Outro Music: Downtime, Vistas, Miracle of Sound, 2014 -> Check out his Bandcamp! https://miracleofsound.bandcamp.com/ Hosted on Acast. Our guest this week, Alia Volz, wrote a book titled Home Baked: My Mom, Marijuana, and The Stoning of San Francisco about her experience growing up in San Francisco in the late 1970s and 80s. Alia's parents were the owners of Sticky Fingers Brownies which made pot brownies that were known all over the city. While these brownies were the source of relaxation and fun for many people, when HIV and AIDS hit San Francisco, Sticky Fingers became a lifeline for many gay men who were devastated by the disease because the pot brownies helped them with pain and appetite. The book covers a lot of territory, not the least of which is Alia's parents' backgrounds and what it was like for her to grow up in San Francisco in a family that couldn't really talk about what it did because of the illegal nature of their business. Her book was a 2020 finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Autobiography. It's a fascinating read which shows the social history leading to the legalization and wider use of cannabis for medical use in the US through the lens of her own family's story. Books Discussed in this Episode: 1- Home Baked: My Mom, Marijuana, and the Stoning of San Francisco by Alia Volz 2- Flowers in the Attic by VC Andrews 3- The Stand by Stephen King 4- Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll 5- Dune by Frank Herbert 6- Pandora's Lab: Seven Stories of Science Gone Wrong by Paul Offitt 7- In Defense of Witches: The Legacy of the Witch Hunts and Why Women are Still on Trial by Mona Chollet 8- Daughters of Smoke and Fire by Ava Homa 9- The Haunting of Tram Car 015 (Dead Djinn Universe #0.3)by P. Forty years ago in Egypt, the mystic and inventor Al-Jahiz pierced the veil between realms, sending magic into the world before vanishing into the unknown. Think steampunk meets history meets detective novel meets magic! Now in 1912 Cairo, humans brush elbows with djinn in crowded tramcars and airships sail the skies. In this new world the Egyptian Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments and Supernatural Entities maintains an uneasy peace. When someone claiming to be Al-Jahiz “returned” murders a secret brotherhood dedicated to his legacy, however, that peace dissolves into disarray. The Ministry's youngest agent Fatma el-Sha'arawi has saved the world before. But this case is a special challenge. The imposter's dangerous magical abilities and revolutionary message threaten to tear apart the fabric of this new Egyptian society, and spill over onto the global stage. Can Agent Fatma unravel the mystery of Al-Jahiz in time to save the world—again? Read A Master of Djinn today! Born in New York and raised mostly in Houston, P. DJÈLÍ CLARK spent the formative years of his life in the homeland of his parents, Trinidad and Tobago. A Hugo and Sturgeon Award finalist, he is the author of The Black God's Drums and The Haunting of Tram Car 015. His short story “The Secret Lives of the Nine Negro Teeth of George Washington” (Fireside Fiction) has earned him both a Nebula and Locus Award. Clark lives in Connecticut. In this episode of Postcards, I have a chat with author P.Djeli Clark the author of one of my favorite books of last year Ring Shout. Phenderson Djéli Clark is the award-winning and Hugo, Nebula, Sturgeon, and World Fantasy nominated author of the novellas Ring Shout, The Black God’s Drums, and The Haunting of Tram Car 015. Born in New York and raised mostly in Houston, Texas, he spent the early formative years of his life in the homeland of his parents, Trinidad and Tobago. Ring Shout is an amazing piece of work from a singular voice. No one else on this planet could write this story and those are the best stories always. Ring Shout is a dark fantasy that is not only in conversation with history but confronting it. This novel is a cutting piece of commentary that comes out a century after its events and sadly doesn’t feel distant. This conversation is about Clark as a writer, and a historian but any discussion of a novel like Ring Shout will be deep. The history of the Klan, the movements against them but both historical and fictional. Balance of history, mythology, and much more. @pdjeliclark pdjeliclark.com •You can find my books here: Bookshop: https://bookshop.org/contributors/david-agranoff Amazon-https://www.amazon.com/David-Agranoff/e/B004FGT4ZW •And me here: Goodreads-http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/2988332.David_Agranoff Twitter-https://twitter.com/DAgranoffAuthor Blog-http://davidagranoff.blogspot.com/

Welcome to 'Judge a Book by its Cover!' AKA JABBIC- a Little City Library Podcast. We read novellas with interesting covers and review them, but before we dig into the book, we make a guess as to what it is about based on the cover image. Sometimes we are spot on, and some times we aren't, either way we'll let you know if the book is worth reading. This week we read 'The Haunting of Tram Car 015' by P. Djeli Clark- tune in to see if this bureaucratic procedural set in a future past and clocking in at just over 100 pages is the escape you need from daily life.
