About 25 years ago, Fernet-Branca went from a somewhat eclectic drink, shared among the city's old school bartenders, to one of the most iconic spirits in San Francisco. Its polarizing taste profile has been compared to Vicks NyQuil and VapoRub on one end of the spectrum, to a delightful Christmas Tree or Chinese herbs on the other end. How did this divisive Italian spirit work its way into the hearts of San Franciscans? Bay Curious producer Amanda Font bellies up to the bar to find out. Dr. Jeffrey Joseph, otolaryngologist and facial plastic surgeon of Acadian ENT joins Discover Lafayette to discuss his 29-year career in reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. Dr. Joseph works with a team of other ENT specialists and staff, including Drs. Bradley Chastant and Ryan Chastant. Their practice recently merged with Camellia ENT, which has been in operation since 1990, and now includes Drs. David Foreman, Lane Anzalone, and Jimmy White. Dr. Joseph has been seeing patients in Southwest Louisiana since 1993. His professional acumen in performing rhinoplasty and rejuvenation surgery on the aging face has made him well-known and in demand in our community. He is also known nationally and in 2003, Dr. Joseph was the only Louisiana facial plastic surgeon included in the book "The Beauty Makers" featuring talented facial plastic surgeons in the U. S. A native of Crowley, his father owned Emile Joseph Menswear in the Northgate Mall and in the South College Shopping Center. Dr. Joseph was always interested in medicine since he was a young boy, and followed the advice of his best friend's dad, the late Nolan Edwards, who told him if he was going to be a doctor, he should be a plastic surgeon because he liked to draw and paint. "I started thinking this would be a good avenue for me to do the two things that I'm most passionate about, taking care of people and drawing and painting!" At Acadian ENT, each doctor has their own niche and you have plastic surgery options as well as treatment for allergy and sinus issues, hearing loss, and hearing aid and cochlear implants. Patients have access to skincare and facial treatments, and innovative laser procedures. The full suite of services offered include • Allergy Center • Skincare Center • Hearing & Balance Center • Facial Plastics Center • Radiological services / CT Scan • Onsite pharmacy • Onsite surgical suite • Hearing aid repair options. In particular, Dr. Joseph is proud to offer a convenient onsite CT scanner so that patients don't have to go to another facility to get a scan taken. Dr. Joseph practices at their office at 1000 W. Pinhook Rd, Suite 201 and the South Lafayette location is at 1039 Camellia Blvd. Acadian ENT also has offices in Kaplan and Crowley. While Acadian ENT offers a full array of skin care services, Dr. Joseph gives simple advice to take care of your skin and avoid unnecessary damage. "Wash with soap such as Purpose or Cetaphil. Use sunscreen and a topical Vitamin C or retinol product. It all starts with taking care of your skin and protecting yourself from the sun. Consistency with good products is the key." Dr. Joseph won't operate on smokers and he works to try to get people to their ideal weight prior to surgery to obtain the best results. The most requested "anything" is people wanting to look like a Kardashian. Many of his patients have had skin cancer removed and need reconstruction of their face post-Mohs surgery to restore symmetry. While most plastic surgeons perform 12 to 20 facelifts a year, Dr. Joseph performs over 100, which is a lot for a town of our size. While surgery can cause immense bruising and discoloration for the first few days, Dr. Joseph follows up with his patients every day for the first five days to check the healing process and give an accurate assessment to the patients as to how well they are healing. On the fifth day, stitches are removed and the patient's hair is washed in the office. Most bruising is gone by the 7th day and by the 10th-day post-surgery, the typical patient can get out and about. Supplements such as arnica and bromelain work wonders to keep bruising and swelling under control. And more common sense advice from the doc: Vicks salve (Vaporub) helps with bruising for anyone....surgery or not. With 29 years of experience, Dr. Jeffrey Joseph has seen his practice evolve. Focusing on facial cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, his advice to potential patients is "Don't pick the proced...

When people say “don't,” sometimes their warnings are wrong or just ridiculous. But when God says “don't,” it's for our protection and we'd be wise to pay attention. Even, or maybe especially, when it comes to our sexuality. In this episode, Mary Ann and Luanne discuss the lying voices that try to lure teenagers (and all of us) into misusing one of God's most precious gifts. God offers forgiveness and redemption when we fall, but isn't it better to just do things His way? (Hint: The answer is YES!) Parents and teens, check out Luanne's two books—one for gals and one for guys—about Biblical sexuality, drawing from her 17 years' experience as a high school teacher and counselor. Those books, “Pure Lives” and “The Warrior Within,” are available on her website (address below) and on amazon.com. Luanne's new book, “Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God,” is also available for order through her website and on amazon.com, as is Mary Ann's book, “Live. Learn.

"In addition to regular Vicks, your abuela has an extra jar of Vicks specifically for rubbing all up under your nose whenever you have a really bad cold even though the label clearly says not to do this." Latinx people might be incapable of agreeing on the proper colour of rice (red? yellow? white with peas?), but we're united by the shared experience of Vick's. This comedy piece first appeared in Flexx magazine. A transcript of this episode will be available on LatinxLitMag.com starting Tuesday October 19th. Carlos Greaves is an Afro-Latino engineer, writer and filmmaker based in Boston. He teaches online satire writing at The Second City and writes for Netflix's Con Todo social channel. His writing has been featured in The New Yorker and he is a frequent contributor to the humor site McSweeney's.
Did Carlos' abuela really use VapoRub on him? Is Teresa continuing the intergenerational Vick's trauma? All these questions and more get answered in this hard-hitting behind the scenes episode. A full transcript of this episode will be available on Latinxlitmag.com starting Tuesday October 19th. The early days of the internet gave LGBTQ folks the unprecendted ability to take matters into their own hands, by creating blogs, podcasts, videos and music that spoke directly to audiences about their unique experience. We were no longer held back by narrow minded gatekeeper's that kept the queer experience hidden from the world. Now it seems like everyone is a little bit gay and pop music is very queer. As we lead up to the milestone of our 3000th show, some of our favorite guests, who have been there for the long haul, like musician Tom Goss, are back to tell you just how awesome Feast of Fun is, and yes, they are correct.Tom was a college wrestler who went ot the seminary in hopes of becoming a Catholic priest but then he came out, became a singer songwriter and eventually grew to be the loveable queer music icon he is today.Today musician Tom Goss joins us to to look back on being a queer music pioneer, why he's now creating music for the thrill of it, and how you just need 1000 dedicated fans to make it in this world.TOM GOSS: http://www.tomgossmusic.comPlus--➤ Tom's song with Deven Green and Ned Douglas.https://www.youtube.com/embed/CPv5NJPlKD0➤ Elvira, Mistress of the Dark comes out of the coffin as a lover of a woman.➤ Why Latinx folks love Vick's Vaporub.➤ Anderson Cooper says neither Christopher nor Christina will get a penny of his enormous fortune, for reasons well known to them.

Add that to her experiences on both sides of the bar and you can be sure that her fantasy pub is going to be an absolute belter. “People put a lot of value in brands. When you are at home or are limited (because of the pandemic) you tend to go with the first one you think of. But there are brands that have to think differently, especially brands in retail.” Jeff Lotman has an iconic career both as a brand strategist at his firm Global Icons and as a retailer as the owner of Fred Segal. He’s also the author of the book Invisible Marketing. We discussed all of this and more this week on the On Brand podcast. About Jeff Lotman Jeff Lotman is the driving force behind Global Icons, the world’s leading brand-focused agency with over $5 billion in retail sales and a client roster that includes Kleenex, Hostess, Lamborghini, NOKIA, and USPS, among others. He is also the owner of Fred Segal, LA's iconic fashion brand, and author of the best selling book, Invisible Marketing: A Hidden Tool For Connecting With Consumers Through Licensing. Episode Highlights Why is licensing “invisible marketing” as Jeff’s book of the same name suggests? “Because most don’t think of it!” Jeff noted during the podcast. You’re taking the customer's trust of a brand—which is valuable—and extending it somewhere else. “We’re selling rarified air. It’s intangible.” When should a brand start to think about licensing? “You have to be number one in something first.” Jeff pointed to examples such as White Castle, known both in their region and for their sliders. How do you know where to extend? “You have to ask—and test it out.” Being a brand licensing expert, I had to ask Jeff for his best and worst examples. His favorite? Vicks—known for their Vaporub—successfully extended their brand into the humidifier space with an artfully designed, cough-drop shaped device. And his not-so-good example …? Zippo—known for its iconic lighters—tried to market a perfume. “You can't just throw your logo on it.” There has to be a fit. What brand has made Jeff smile recently? Jeff pointed to another great licensing case study—Taco Bell and Doritos. “It was great! How had they not done this before?" To learn more, check out the Global Icons website and Jeff’s book Invisible Marketing. As We Wrap … Did you hear something you liked on this episode or another? Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) talk about why Afternoon Delight, a horribly strange movie on Amazon Prime Should've Been Gay. According to The IMDB synopsis, Rachel is a quick-witted and lovable stay-at-home mom. Frustrated with the realities of preschool auctions, a lackluster sex life and career that's gone kaput, Rachel visits a strip club to spice up her marriage and meets McKenna, a stripper she adopts as her live-in nanny. If that isn't gay, then we don't know what is. From bored housewife to the sensual massage that McKenna gives Rachel with VapoRub to Rachel literally watching McKenna in bed, this movie just screams gay.
