"I've learned much more from my mistakes than I ever learned from my successes, because it was my mistakes that helped me to have successes." Meet the man behind the mission to diversify the energy sector. Dr. Isaac Crumbly shares the journey of the Cooperative Developmental Energy Program (CDEP) at Fort Valley State University, a program designed to pave the way for African American students into the energy industry. Dr. Crumbly has been pivotal in diversifying the energy industry's workforce since 1983. Dr. Crumbly's innovative approach recognized the value of internships and strategic partnerships to introduce African American students to the energy industry. At a time when energy companies in the Deep South rarely recruited African American college students for internships, Dr. Crumbly took matters into his own hands, reaching out to the industry and advocating for his students. One of his most inspiring creations is the dual degree program in geosciences, which was born out of necessity when Fort Valley State University couldn't offer geology or geophysics degrees. Dr. Crumbly's solution was to partner with universities in energy-centric regions, like the University of Oklahoma, to create a program where students could earn degrees critical to the energy industry. The impact of Dr. Crumbly's work is undeniable. President Reagan and President Obama have honored CDEP, recognizing the program's contribution to STEM and the importance of expanding representation in the geosciences. As he shares his vision, Dr. Crumbly challenges the geophysics community to embrace the perspectives of minority individuals and support the journey toward a more inclusive industry. His story is a testament to the power of determination and the lasting change that can be achieved through dedicated effort.
Center for Scalable and Intelligent-Automation in Poultry Processing (CSI-APP) This podcast highlights interdisciplinary research on a current four-year project that is being sponsored by the USDA. It is a collaboration among GTRI, Georgia Tech, Fort Valley State University, University of Arkansas and University of Nebraska. Its goal is to help modernize the poultry processing industry through novel forms of automation, the need for which has been dramatically demonstrated by the pandemic. Georgia is by far the US's largest poultry producer. Poultry is a billion-dollar industry in the state and this project aligns with GTRI's commitment to serve Georgia. The project has four research objectives: (1) intelligent automation of poultry deboning, (2) virtual reality telepresence to enable human-robot collaboration on the plant floor, (3) intelligent automation of poultry plant sanitation and health, and (4) determination of the societal impacts of automating traditional manual jobs. Recent advances in robot hardware, sensors and artificial intelligence capabilities will be fully leveraged. The project has potentially global ramifications.

How do you know when it's time to walk away from a dream? As a business owner and entrepreneur, we are driven by our passions to our goals we set for ourselves. However, sometimes we have to quit and start over. Pivoting (quit by a different name) means course correcting due to either external, or internal factors. Wayne Hartley Jr., owner and founder of Happy Hearts Pet Care ATL, joins the show to share how he quit his dream of mobile grooming to start a brick and mortar business. Wayne sacrificed a lot to make it happen, but it was all because he recognized he needed the change to better connect with his mission. He gives advice on how to keep moving forward, even when you're exhausted, and how to innovate well in your business. Main topics: Moving to brick and mortar Taking risks FLIG Beaten down Innovating Main takeaway: The difference between acting out of desperation and focused intentionality, is the belief you have in yourself and the goal you're working towards. About our guest: My name is Wayne Hartley Jr. I am a Registered Veterinary Technician. Pet Care has always been a passion of mine. Since I was young I've always loved animals — both learning about and taking care of them. I have graduated from THE Fort Valley State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Veterinary Technology. I have worked in various veterinary settings from the largest multi-specialty emergency hospital to general practices, other referral hospitals, and university settings such as the University of Georgia's Veterinary Teaching Hospital. When not working, I have volunteered my time at wildlife conservation centers, adoption agencies, dog daycare, cat sanctuaries, and with the Boys and Girls Club as well as Habitat for Humanity. Giving back and working with the community has always been another passion for me. It makes my heart happy to be able to be a blessing for someone else. (see what I did there). After being a veterinary technician for 7 years, I began Happy Hearts Pet Care as a mobile grooming service in 2016 and moved to a brick and mortar location in 2022. I also founded PETLANTA, a community of pet care professionals in Atlanta that come to support each other, network, teach, and give back to the community. I now have the opportunity to share my love of animals with my clients and pet owners all over the Stone Mountain and Metro Atlanta area. Whenever a doe's udder has a different texture or temperature than normal, mastitis is the first thing that we all worry about. Today's topic has been one of the most requested from my listeners, so I know it's something we all worry about from time to time.Dr. George McCommon, professor of veterinary science and public health at Fort Valley State University, joins us today to talk about the basics of mastitis, as well as his current research project. We start with mastitis symptoms and how a hot, hard udder is not always present when a doe has mastitis. In fact, when a doe has gangrenous mastitis, her udder may actually be cold. We discuss the California Mastitis Test, better known as the CMT, and I got my question answered about when the reagent expires! We discuss conventional antibiotic treatments, and we also talk about how probiotics might play a role in treating mastitis. That's the subject of Dr. McCommon's research right now, and they are still working on figuring out which probiotic strains work best.In this episode, we also talk about one of my biggest mistakes as a goat owner. Years ago I thought a doe had hypocalcemia when in fact, she had gangrenous mastitis. To learn more about how those two things could get confused, check out our episode on hypocalcemia in goats.See full show notes here >> https://thriftyhomesteader.com/mastitis-in-goats/To see the most recent episodes, visit ForTheLoveOfGoats.comWant to support the content you love?Head over to -- https://thrifty-homesteader.ck.page/products/love-goats-tip-jar
Valentine's Day is the one time of the year when love is supposed to be in the air. But on February 14, 2020 - the holiday for lovers represented quite the opposite for one estranged Georgia couple after 23-year-old Fort Valley State University student Antria Gunn turned up missing after a college party. Police were quick to pin the blame on her ex boyfriend, a known abusive manipulator, as their main suspect - only there was one problem. They didn't yet have enough evidence to arrest Gunn's supposed soulmate. Written by Michael Dunphy Jr., Executive Produced by Michael Ojibway. Tyrone Poole, an only child raised by his amazing parents in LaGrange, Georgia, discusses his journey from being too small and too inexperienced to becoming a two-time Super Bowl champion. He talks about the mistake he made in high school as a result of ignorance and arrogance and how that experience prepared him for his college football experience, namely when his head coach decided to move him from running back to defensive back because he saw something in him that he didn't see in himself. And today, you will hear the rest of the story. We delve into his time at Fort Valley State University, the #1 Public Historical Black College in the state of Georgia to his time in the NFL as one of the greatest walk-ons in college to ever make it to the NFL to social injustice, white privilege, and his life after football. #NFL #HBC #HBCU #FortValleyState #SuperBowl #SuperBowlChampion #Patriots #NewEnglandPatriots #ESPN #Georgia Check it out where ever you listen to your audio and video podcasts! Ever since 4th grade in Chicago, Illinois, Larry Wrather has struggled with his identity. Born to a black father and white mother, he was bullied for being different in many of the places he went. In Chicago, he was the “half-white” kid. When his family moved to Lake Forest and he began playing volleyball, he was just the “black” kid, having to deal with horrible stereotypes. Eventually, all of these factors led to a crisis of identity, with Larry working through a depression and figuring out who he was. Listen in as he talks with Justin about their varying experiences playing club volleyball, mental health, and figuring out their identity. Over the years, through self-reflection, self-growth, and realizing nothing changes overnight, Larry realized who he was in terms of the black community and the world as a whole. Currently living in Georgia with his wife, he is coach to both the men's and women's volleyball teams at Fort Valley State University. He has his own podcast, “Motiv8 MVB,” which can be found on Spotify. You can also find him on Instagram @Motiv8_MVB. As they say, you’re a product of your environment, and your environment will have a tremendous impact on your mental health. Shelby Hicks and Katelyn Simmons are the founders of Inclusivity, a nonprofit organization that focuses on creating safe spaces to talk about mental health. www.UINews.net On today's Podcast Alecia Jeanetta Johnson, the former Fort Valley State University executive assistant to the president, was indicted Friday for prostitution and pimping in a scandal that rocked the tiny college last summer. Johnson Publishing Company, the founder and former owner of Ebony and Jet magazines, is being liquidated. The company filed for bankruptcy liquidation last Tuesday. As a man of humble beginnings who went on to lead an extraordinary life, Tyrone Poole is committed to giving back. Tyrone is a former professional athlete, and current author, speaker, inventor, entrepreneur and fitness evangelist. However, his greatest passion is the Tyrone Poole 38 Foundation, and its three pillars: Education, Fitness, and Humanitarianism Despite attending Fort Valley State University, a small historically black university, Tyrone’s athletic ability caught the attention of the highest ranks of professional football. Drafted in the first round of the National Football League (NFL) Draft. Tyrone went on to play 14 years in the NFL — 12 of those years as a starter — and won two Super Bowls XXXVIII (38) & XXXIX (39) with the New England Patriots under legendary coach Bill Belichick. As the saying goes, “To whom much is given, much is required.” Tyrone lives out this message in countless ways — from hosting “Ultimate Success Life Skills Seminars” for underserved youth, to teaming with The Disability Channel to offer “virtual walk” fundraisers throughout the globe. Regardless of the charitable endeavor, Tyrone ensures that education and fitness are incorporated into his philanthropic outreach. From funding academic scholarships, to underwriting fees for his football camps, Tyrone’s heart for youth is boundless. And when it comes to humanitarianism, Tyrone is always there — from supporting global natural disasters, to sponsoring food drives in his own, small town of LaGrange, GA. He graduated from Lagrange High School, where he lettered in both football and track and field. Tyrone was originally drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the first round (22nd overall). He was the first Defensive Back taken in the 1995 NFL Draft. Tyrone played collegiate football at Fort Valley State University. While at Fort Valley, Tyrone was a four year starter and became the first player from the university to be selected in the first round of the NFL Draft. Tyrone also competed in Track and Field, setting school records in the 100 and 200 meters. He placed in the Track and Field Outdoor National Championship his sophomore, junior and senior years. Tyrone is 1 of 2 athletes in Fort Valley State history to obtain All-American status in two sports (Football and Track and Field). Poole is an inductee of the Division II Football Hall Of Fame and SIAC Conference Hall Of Fame. Tyrone is the Author of “Ultimate Success In The Game Of Life” and the inventor of the "T38 Multi-Training Sled". He believes that, “All things are possible with God”. Meet: Tyrone Poole.

He worked for the Federation for more than 45 years from 1969, and served as Executive Director for thirty years from 1985 to 2015. Initially, Mr. Paige worked as a field organizer developing cooperatives among family farmers and rural residents in Georgia and throughout the South.
