POPULARITY
Definitive Ranking returns! This week, we're examining Milton Guasti's Another Metroid II Remake, or AM2R, the fan game so unbelievably good we can rank it on the same level as official Metroid games! We're going through and ranking it by the same standards as we would an official Nintendo-made Metroid game, talking about the boss inclusions, how Metroid fights could have been implemented differently, some of the crazy expansions, and more! Come play along, and as always, here's the criteria for the Definitive Rankings: World / Atmosphere (the vibe, the setting, the mood) Art Style (design of Samus, the enemies, the graphics in general) Story (what works, what doesn't) Pacing / Progression (are there any parts that really bog the player down, or is it still fun getting lost?) Gameplay / “Gimmick” (what new or different gameplay aspects we like) Items / Abilities (how are the powerups and are they cool and practical) Areas (how does each individual area look, feel, play, etc.) Enemies / Bosses (are they fun, creative, etc.) Expansions / Powerups (are the expansions hidden throughout the world fun, creative, and enjoyable to collect?) Music (are we humming along?) Of course, all of these are subjective, and we're putting our critics hats on, but we want to hear what you have to say on Bluesky! Visit OmegaMetroid.com! Subscribe! The Omega Metroid Marathon is officially over, and after a fantastic but exhausting week, we're taking the week to recharge. Fear not though - this week will be a special treat, as in audio form is Andy's interview with AM2R creator Milton "DoctorM64" Guasti! Milton offers his thoughts, perspective, and memories making AM2R as we play through, so imagine this as a Directors Commentary cut, like the DVD days of old! Thank you so much to Milton for taking the time to record with us, and if you get the chance, check out the video ! Thank you to everyone that tuned in and made the Omega Metroid such a huge success - tripling our fundraising goal! We'll see you all next week! Visit OmegaMetroid.com! Subscribe!
The black sheep in the Metroid series, Metroid 2: Return of Samus, was originally developed and published by Nintendo for Game Boy in 1991, and has since seen two well-known remakes- the fan remake AM2R, developed by Milton Guasti and released for PC in 2016, as well as MercurySteam and Nintendo's official remake, Metroid: Samus Returns, released in 2017 for the 3DS. This episode is a compare and contrast episode, featuring all three games. Joining me for this episode are three Metroid aficionados- Matt aka Stormageddon ("Fun" and Games, Reignite, Screen Snark podcasts), Geoff Moonen ("Fun" and Games) and Case Aiken (Men of Steel, Another Pass podcasts). Heeeee's baaaack! This week, Andy returns and joins the fellas as they embark on a marathon topic: picking a favorite song from each game in the Metroid series (plus AM2R and Smash Bros. for good measure!). We have a lot of fun discussing our favorite tracks, trying to describe why we like them, which soundtracks we think are the best and which ones leave something to be desired, and realizing that, of all games, Metroid Prime Federation Force has *by far* the biggest OST in the entire series! The whole band is back together and having an absolute blast, so come and hang out with us and let us know what your favorite songs from each game are! Visit OmegaMetroid.com! Subscribe! We're kicking it old school this week, as we're diving into one of the most important and underrated games in the series - Metroid II! We're once again joined by Staff Writer Daniel Hoctor to go over our first memories of playing it, how its limitations might or might not dissuade newer players, the importance of the games story and gameplay on the rest of the series, why none of the music has come back, our thoughts on the evolution of the Metroids, what this original version offers that neither Samus Returns or AM2R does, and so much more! If you haven't played Metroid II in a long time, or maybe ever, you owe it to yourself to fire it up on NSO and give it a whirl! Happy New Year! We're ringing in 2023 by tackling some of the Metroid Musing questions our amazing writers at OmegaMetroid.com have put together! On the docket today: Will Sylux be presented as a villain or an anti-hero in Metroid Prime 4? Should Other M's Accel Charge ever return? Do you consider AM2R an "official" Metroid title, quality-wise? Should Metroid Dread have included a remix of a previous track, and if so, what and where Why does Metroid Prime 3 not get enough love as it should? We also discuss the AM2R team coming back with a brand new title on kickstarter. That's pretty much it. I don't know what else to write in the description, it's a pretty boring episode.

As we all know, Metroid celebrates its 35th anniversary this year, a landmark not many other franchises can claim to have hit. Over the years, there have some been some incredible high spots for the series: Super Metroid popularizing speed running, Ridley main eventing E3, the double release of Metroid Prime and Fusion, just to name a few. Of course, there have also been some bumps in the road - Other M missing the mark, Metroid skipping the N64, AM2R getting a C&D, etc. - along the way a well. This week, the boys reminisce about some of their personal highs and lows for the series over the year as we look forward to E3. Come listen and let us know what your moment would be! Subscribe! Since then, his talents have been recognised by Moon Studios, on the video game Ori and the Will of the Wisps. This episode also features our host Amanda, and team members RoyboyX and Torby Brand.
Nintendo has some of the most influential games on the market, so it's no surprise that they also have their fair share of fan games. From Pokémon Uranium to AM2R, we're taking a look at how these bosses use their inspiration, and how we should critique these fights overall in this Boss Battle Breakdown!

Several days late, but still super great! The GameBytes Show crew is here at ostensibly the middle of the week to talk to you about the games in our lives for the last part of September! LeGrande delves back into Starcraft 2, and we talk about how the game holds up now that the campaigns are released and it’s a few years on. Jeremy has been playing Raiders of the Broken Planet, and finally takes up the whip in Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate for the 3DS. Dale rounds out the MercurySteam catalog by spending a bit more time with Metroid: Samus Returns on 3DS and makes a more direct comparison with AM2R, as well as waxing on the endgame of Diablo 3. Metriod has got some comeback momentum going on right now with Metroid Prime 4 in the works and Metroid: Samus Returns for the 3DS getting released (suspiciously soon after AM2R got shut down), so we figure we’d go back and cover likely one of the greatest video games of all time, Super Metroid for the SNES. We also discuss: * Vanquish on PC * Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 * Fortnite * PUBG Patch
Valve announces a game we don't necessarily want but will definitely make money, former DICE head Patrick Bach sets up shop with Ubisoft, and AM2R's demise has a gloriously silver lining.

I have wanted a remake of Final Fantasy 12 for some time now, and I’m excited to see it get this treatment, you have Final Fantasy 12 to thank for great games like Dragon Age: Origins. http://kotaku.com/final-fantasy-xii-remastered-for-ps4-1780732751 Right after we just spoke about Peter Molyneux and how we wanted him to make a comeback but not talk anymore, he gets ready for a new steam release! The last time they shot out a CnD they did so because they were already making a metroid 2 remake and AM2R had just been released. Is there hope that maybe the already announce but no details known Pokemon game will be something like Pixelmon? Probably not, because they have no interest in pc gaming as of yet. http://www.pcgamer.com/pixelmon-the-pokemon-mod-for-minecraft-has-been-shut-down/ Kingdom Hearts 3 gets some new trailers, and the Toy Story world trailer in particular looks promising! 4 party members at a time?! We get the inside scoop of E3 from Kaura Loft's POV of what she saw, heard and played. Checkout her pictures and videos at Blistergaming.com. Not much news in the world but it's some big stuff as Rockstar stood down from legal action against modding tools and Nintendo explains why AM2R was sent a cease and desist in a convoluted manner. It's the crew again Toast, Halacy, Belmont, Linch, Maestro and Kaura giving you another episode of fun and news.
Josh and Chris are joined by two new members: Kasim and Ruben. The crew talks AM2R (Another Metroid 2 Remake), Horizon: Zero Dawn, Mass Effect: Andromeda hype, Resident Evil 7 and Zelda (our will is weak). Everyone realizes that so far 2017 has been damn good for games, what a time to be alive! After the jump we discuss Lost Constellation, a free supplemental game to Night In The Woods. We close out the show with Out of Bounds conversations on D&D, the stress of keeping up with superhero comics, K Pop fandom, and The Lego Batman Movie. Thursdays are your day for mobile games, apps and Nintendo! We love our handhelds and the opportunity to play games anywhere, and we bet you do, too! How about we start things off with a little 'Metroid' news! You can't go wrong with that! AM2R Gets An Un-Official Update Anyone who saw this 'Metroid'' game launch on Aug 6 knows that it was sealed up by Nintendo's legal team soon after in an attempt to stop people from playing. But, ah...the power of the Internet! Links had been saved, shared and followed by that time, keeping AM2R alive! Tune in this episode to get an update on the game that's sticking it to Nintendo and still being played by fans! Important Addition For 'Taekwondo Game Global Tournament' If you're interested in getting a quick fighting game fix, 'Taekwondo Game Global Tournament' might just be for you! And now that it's received an official endorsement from the World Taekwondo Federation, those who love the sport will be glad to know it's authentic. An update has just been released that adds something more to the gameplay that fans of the genre will appreciate! Rad has the scoop! Niantic Is Talking, But Is Anyone Listening Anymore? Niantic reports that Pokémon Go is as strong as ever, but maybe they just mean Asia? OK, seriously folks. The truth is, there has been a steady decline that no one, (not even Niantic) can ignore. Fans were waiting since launch for things to be fixed, explained and delivered as promised.....and it seems that the clumps of people wandering the streets have moved onto something else. Niantic is now attempting to explain why they shut down Pokémon Go maps and trackers and have even started unbanning some users. Our fearless, die-hard gamer podcast host Radnor will be discussing both of these announcements (and his theories, of course) during our episode. In addition to these excellent news items, Rad will be talking about the exciting announcements from Square Enix ahead of the Tokyo Game Show, a pinball RPG Final Fantasy XV spin-off that's available now, details on the 'New Galaxy Style' Nintendo 3DS XL, a special, limited-time mystery gift for owners of Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire' or 'Pokémon X/Y', and a popular dev team that's shutting down after 10 years together! No foolin’ I mean, err, wait what, you mean that it’s actually not as cool as I thought it was going to be. Wait, wait, now you’re telling me that it sucks—oh…. Oohhhh… On our hundredth (yeah, our official one-hundredth episode) we go on to talk about the unavoidable phenomena that is hype, and how it usually gets spearheaded in our face within our screens, phones, timelines, and worst—your fellow people. In addition, we decide to pit Candy Apple Faygo and Lime & Cucumber Gatorade against each other, Pokémon Go, Pokémon Sun/Moon, Gamescom, Metal Gear Survive, Inside, Galaga Wars, No Man’s Sky, Tekken 7, WarFrame, the leaked PlayStation 4 Slim, AM2R, and so much more. It’s another long one you guys, settle in, and grab the right drink, (you know which one) as you listen to us on our “hundredth” show! Mail us at our new email Mailbag@presspauseradio.com, leave a voicemail at 469-PPR-TALK, and be sure to stop by at our Forums if you haven’t already registered and post your thoughts about the show. 08/24/2016 - Gawker media is no more. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is out, and despite Ryan and Andrew's optimism, there's undeniable controversy surrounding the game. Facebook is going to compete with Valve, except not really. Plentiful Sony hardware news. ZeniMax vs. John Carmack. AM2R's creator is back and baiting Nintendo's wrath. Where the hell is the NX? Devolver Digital and Croteam are putting out a survival sandbox game. First Dark Souls 3 expansion is coming. Valve is pissing off CS:GO eSports cum guzzlers. Allison Road is back from the dead.
We are joined live by Dr. Kate Raynes-Goldie, Director of Games & Interactive at FTI and winner of the WAITTA Incite “Achiever of the Year” award for her passionate advocacy for the Western Australian games industry, Kate filled us in on her hopes for the future of WA game development, her thoughts on the power of the indie game scene and how our favourite small creators may well hold the key to the future success of Australian made games. You can visit one of Kate’s projects, Playup Perth, a collaborative game testing night, at the The Nostalgia Box to sample some of WA’s finest indie games. You can visit http://playupperth.org/next-playup-event/ for tickets and details. Last week Mitch had endless trouble trying to run No Man’s Sky on the office PS4 with no web connection, so this week we’re looking at the internet connection conundrum. With more and more games requiring the internet to even launch, total offline gaming could be a thing of the past. What happens if you’re in an area where internet is spotty, and you can’t experience the cultural phenomenon that is Pokémon Go? Can you make games if you aren’t able to study and learn from the works of others? Finally we look at pastiche & homage games. With recent high profile fan made games AM2R, a remake of Metroid II, and Pokémon Uranium, a brand new adventure set in the Pokémon world being released then pulled, we examine what it means when developers copy or imitate the work of others. Is this a vital part of remix culture, or just a plain copyright infringement? You can find us on all the social media sites, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Twitch, YouTube and Steam. Just search for "pixelsift" and you'll find us!

Is it discrimination if students ask for only non-white roommates, or should it be allowed? Or maybe it's discrimination and it should still be allowed. A student from Claremont Colleges in California recently did just that, looking to create a "safe space" inside her home: I debate the merits of this claim with this week's guest, director of marketing from Full Moon Entertainment, and alternate-lifestyle evangelist, Wry. Full Moon Entertainment, if you'll recall, is the company behind my masterpiece film debut, Ooga Booga. Also, here is a quick survey to help out the show: http://survey.libsyn.com/madcastmedia I received a metric shit-ton of voicemail at the top of the show, thanks in no small part to Rucka's various shenanigans about minutes that are allegedly Armenian. Though there's a silver lining: we're receiving a lot more calls from Sean's old Italian in-laws. The voicemail number is: 1-562-58-I-RULE (1-562-584-7853). madcastmedia.com Sources Washington Post - Debate flares after black college students seek a non-white roommate - https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/grade-point/wp/2016/08/11/debate-flares-after-black-college-students-seek-a-non-white-roommate/ Nolo.com - Federal Fair Housing act of 1968 - https://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/free-books/renters-rights-book/chapter5-2.html Daily Mail - College denounces black students non-white roommate request - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3736026/College-denounces-black-students-non-white-roommate-request.html NY Daily News - Uproar at Claremont Colleges (video) - http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/request-non-white-roommates-sparks-uproar-calif-colleges-article-1.2750738 PC Gamer - Nintendo issues DMCA notice against Metroid II remake, project AM2R - http://www.pcgamer.com/nintendo-issues-dmca-notice-against-that-really-good-metroid-ii-fan-remake/ Gazette.com - Boy decapitated on waterslide at Kansas Park - http://gazette.com/source-boy-was-decapitated-on-waterslide-at-kansas-park/article/1582407 "Mining by Moonlight" and "Music to Delight" by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

08/13/2016 - It only took 20 hours to see all there is to see in an infinite universe. Egos are masturbated in a discussion about No Man's Sky's reception as well as collected thoughts on the actual game. Andrew forced himself to see Suicide Squad. Star Trek Discovery's marketing and pandering is going exactly the way Ryan dreaded. Marvel Ultimate Alliance is back on PC for full price and along with a ton of bugs. Quake: Champions and Prey's gameplay trailers maintain the status quo. Nintendo is DMCAing awesome things again, like AM2R and the Nintendo Power archive. Quantum Break is coming to Steam, Windows 7 and DX11. The makers of Black Desert Online decided they don't want fans anymore.
