In this episode Alice Yamabe and Andre Mader speak with two IGES colleagues, Fernando Ortiz Moya and Yasuo Takahashi, about the phenomenon of depopulation. Fernando has been studying shrinking cities, and Yasuo has been doing research on urban to rural migration, so we have two quite different angles on this subject.To many it may seem counterintuitive to worry about depopulation in a world in which the human populations continues to grow. But population growth rates have been slowing for decades, and have become negative in a growing list of countries. Interestingly, at least in Japan, this has not necessarily been good for people or the environment. The pieces about him tend to get caught up in the flash of his blades, and don't let us peel back the mask to see the character underneath. Découvrez l'histoire des kamikazes de 1945 au Japon à travers un nouveau récit de Clémentine Portier-Kaltenbach. En avril 1945, la guerre entre le Japon et les Etats-Unis est à son paroxysme. L'armée japonaise a mis en place une unité spéciale composée d'aviateurs, les kamikazes, chargés d'une mission suicide. Parmi eux, Tatsuno, prêt à sacrifier sa vie pour l'Empire, et Yasuo, contraint d'accepter le sort réservé à son meilleur ami en tant qu'escorte des kamikazes. Dans cette seconde partie d'épisode, Clémentine Portier-Kaltenbach décrit la mission des escortes comme Yasuo, et raconte l'instruction de ces aviateurs de guerre qui ont choisi de donner leur vie pour abattre les armées alliées.

A mediados de la década de los 90, si una empresa de Bangkok necesitaba cobre, podría tardar dos meses en recibirlo desde las minas de África. Salvo si se encargaba Sumitomo, el conglomerado japonés que podía lograr un envío en tan solo 10 días. Eran los reyes del mercado, pero todo colapsó en junio de 1996.El responsable fue Yasuo Hamanaka, el hombre que también les había llevado a dominar el mercado. Le apodaban 'Mister Cobre', o 'El señor del 5%', porque se especulaba con que ese era el porcentaje del mercado que controlaba.Puede parecer poco, pero en un mercado tan ilíquido como el del cobre, en el que el transporte entre el almacén y el punto de entrega es tan lento y caro (tanto que puede absorver todo el beneficio de una inversión), es una cantidad muy significativa. Sumitomo acumulaba una gran cantidad de cobre. En depósitos, en almacenes, en fábricas... pero también poseía numerosos contratos de futuros. 'El señor del 5%' utilizaba el tamaño del conglomerado y sus grandes reservas para arrinconar y exprimir el mercado. Lo hacía a través de la Bolsa de Metales de Londres (LME, por sus siglas en inglés), que al ser la mayor del mundo acababa dictando el precio mundial del cobre.Hamakana mantuvo ese precio artificialmente alto durante casi 10 años, disparando sus beneficios. En un mercado tan específico y complejo como ese, la mayoría de inversores y especuladores eran conscientes de que manipulaba el mercado. Y de que contaba con grandes participaciones, tanto en activos físicos como en futuros.Cada vez que un inversor intentaba operar en corto, Mister Cobre manteía sus posiciones, y acababa tumbando a sus rivales, porque tenía más recursos. Sus posiciones largas eran invencibles. Hamanaka también se beneficiaba de que la LME era bastante opaca, y no obligaba ni a tener informes de posiciones, ni estadísticas, ni nada. Así, los comerciantes podían saber que el precio era alto, e incluso muy alto, pero no sabían las cifras que manejaba Hamanaka ni el dinero que tenía en reserva. Al resto de inversores no les quedó más remedio que dejar que se saliese con la suya.La estrategia se empieza a desmoronar en 1995, cuando resurge la minería china, que dispara las reservas de cobre. Con el precio hinchado, el aumento de la oferta ejerció aún mayor presión para corregir los valores. Sumitomo estaba en apuros, porque aún tenía mucho cobre acumulado, y no tenía opción, porque ni podía vender rápido, ni ponerse corto. Y mientras Hamanaka buscaba la forma de mitigar las pérdidas, la LME y la Comisión de Negociación de Futuros de Materias Primas de EEUU (CFTC) comenzaron a investigar la manipulación del mercado mundial de cobre. El conglomerado japonés reaccionó apartando a Hamanaka. Y en cuanto Mister Cobre desapareció... los bajistas atacaron y hundieron los precios. El cobre se desplomó, y Sumitomo anunció pérdidas por valor de 1.800 millones de dólares -aunque meses después reconoció que alcanzaron los 2.600 millones-.La compañía acusó a Hamanaka de deshonesto, y aseguraban que sus acciones eran completamente desconocidas para los directivos de la compañía. También le acusaron de falsificar la contabilidad durante 10 años para ocultar pérdidas multimillonarias. En aquel mes de junio, la compañía descubrió un depósito bancario sospechoso, y el inversor reconoció haberlo escondido. Fue declarado culpable, y condenado a 8 años de cárcel, aunque se libró de la acusación de manipulación del mercado.Pese al despido, la reputación de Sumitomo se vio empañada. Nadie se creía que ignoraban el control de Hamanaka sobre el mercado del cobre. La compañía recibió multas por valor de más de 150 millones de dólares por manipular el mercado. A su vez, demandó a Merrill Lynch, UBS, Credit Lyonnays y Morgan Stanley por ayudar a Hamanaka. Llegaron a acuerdos extrajudiciales por más de 400 millonas de dólares.Tras el escándalo, la LME introdujo nuevos mecanismos de control, para evitar un acaparamiento en el mercado similar al de Hamanaka. Es muy difícil que hoy un actor logre una manipulación a largo plazo como la de Mister Cobre.

For nearly a month, the boys who originally discovered the "Kera Object" continued to search for and experiment with it, almost like a wild animal they hoped to tame.  The tale of their exploits with the bizarre item would be more comfortable to pass off as a childish prank if not for the corroboration of its existence by at least a couple of adults.  One of the boys, Yasuo, brought home the device to be examined by his father, Matsuo Fujimoto, who was then the director of the Center for Science Education in Kōchi City.  The boy's father, someone with scientific training, gave the object a cursory examination.  He determined that it appeared similar to an antique cast iron ashtray, but too light for the real thing.  Peering through the holes in the bottom, Mr. Fujimori noticed that the internal components were similar to a radio's.  However, he was unable to look any closer since it could not be opened and lost interest in the find.  He would later express regret for not having studied the object more closely.  Katsuoka Kojima's mother, Aiko, had also reported that the object glowed like fireflies, while Yasuo Fujimoto's mother had her own sighting of a small UFO about a month later.  In contrast to these possible confirmations of authenticity, a local astronomer interested in the phenomenon, Tsutomu Seki, had interviewed the witnesses and was impressed by them and their story, but still maintained doubts about various elements of the case.  To add to the mystery, at least two other reports of encounters with strikingly similar objects had occurred, one in 1976 about 25 miles to the west from Kera, and another as far away as Suonenjoki, Finland in 1979.  So what are we to make of all the varying details concerning these impossible objects?  If we are to believe ongoing reports, certain authorities already have extraterrestrial items in their possession, but they are strictly guarded secrets not meant for public knowledge.  If we are to believe the thousands of accounts from ordinary citizens, these alien articles are egalitarian in who they choose to appear to.  Perhaps one day, if one of these phenomenal objects can manage to be kept and operated by one of the "Little People," it will open up a new world of discovery and understanding for all of us.   Visit our website for a lot more information on this episode: http://www.astonishinglegends.com/2020/5/17/ep-177-the-kera-object-part-2 (http://www.astonishinglegends.com/al-podcasts/2019/7/14/ep-149-dan-susan-micah-hanks-and-missing-time)

On the 11th of March, 2011, Yasuo Takamatsu lost his wife to the tsunami during the Great East Japan earthquake. Since that fateful day, he has been diving in the sea every week in search for her. Compelled and inspired to share Yasuo’s story, “I want to go home” was a documentary about the strength of human resilence and the power of love, with an accompanying book.  In this episode, we speak to director and author Wesley Leon Aroozoo on the process on conceiving both works, his filmmaker journey and what it is like to be selected for Busan International Film Festival after years of trying. What are his insights about the media industry and its future from teaching the next generation of filmmakers? Wesley Leon Aroozoo is a filmmaker, writer and a LASALLE College of the Arts lecturer. By confronting his human size humanoids to their environment he proves that lifting heavy objects or performing some acrobatic moves become a piece of cake. When augmented with a pinch of chaos theory and a baby size humanoid, Yasou Kuniyoshi attempts to show us that embodied cognition might explain a lot about the way babies move and develop.
