The United States and Ukraine are weighing a deal that would give the U.S. a cut of revenues from Ukraine’s rare earth minerals. But Gracelin Baskaran, mining economist at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said rare earths aren’t all that rare. So why is the Trump administration scrambling to get its hands on these minerals from other countries? On the show today, Baskaran explains what rare earths are, why mining them isn’t always economically attractive, and what the U.S. is doing to try to catch up with China’s rare earth production. Plus, why recycling is only part of the solution. Then, we’ll get into why Canadians are boycotting American vacations. And, how easy is it to get someone to dream about a tree or supply chain economics? Here’s everything we talked about today: “Opinion | How Trump Can Turn the Ukraine Mineral Deal Into Real Security” from The New York Times “US seeks to reopen terms of Ukraine minerals deal” from Financial Times “Fact Sheet: President Donald J. Trump Takes Immediate Action to Increase American Mineral Production” from the White House “Ukraine mineral deal could bolster U.S. supply of key materials” from Marketplace “Why does DRC want a Ukraine-like minerals deal with Trump, amid conflict?” from Al Jazeera “The Space Station Is Too Clean, and It's Making Astronauts Sick” from The Wall Street Journal “Canadians Are Boycotting American Vacations” from The Wall Street Journal Got a question or comment for the hosts? Ganapathy Baskaran is an acclaimed physicist known for his foundational contributions to condensed matter physics, strongly correlated quantum materials, and high-temperature superconductivity. He is an Emeritus Professor at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences in Chennai, India, and a Distinguished Visiting Research Chair at Perimeter. He is also a masterful storyteller who, in this episode, tells Lauren and Colin about his upbringing in India, the people who inspire him, and his time in the developing world. Baskaran reflects on a lifetime of exploring some of nature's most fundamental mysteries, and discusses the similarities and differences that he sees between condensed matter physics and biology. View the episode transcript here. Conversations at the Perimeter is co-hosted by Perimeter Teaching Faculty member Lauren Hayward and journalist-turned-science communicator Colin Hunter. In each episode, they chat with a guest scientist about their research, the challenges they encounter, and the drive that keeps them searching for answers. The podcast is produced by the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, a not-for-profit, charitable organization supported by a unique public-private model, including the Governments of Ontario and Canada. Perimeter Institute acknowledges that it is situated on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Neutral peoples. Be part of the equation: perimeterinstitute.ca/donate ----more---- Baskaran expresses deep gratitude for the people who helped him on his journey, like his high school math teacher, Mr. S.V. Savarimuthu, and his English teacher, Rev. Fr. K.S. Arulanandam, S.J. Baskaran also reached out after our recorded conversation to extend his thanks to others who have impacted his career, including Dr. Rajaram Nityananda, a contemporary graduate student (from National Aeronautical Laboratory, Bangalore) during his PhD days in Bangalore. “Rajaram is one of the most selfless persons I have ever met,” says Baskaran. It was Rajaram who introduced Baskaran to seminal work by P.W. Anderson, a later collaborator of Baskaran's. “In 1977, H.R. Krishnamurthy arrived from Cornell and explained to us the intricacies of the Kondo phenomenon, valence fluctuation, and how to understand them using the quantum RG approach (built on Anderson's poor man's scaling theory) that Krishnamurthy, Wilkinson, and Wilson had just developed. Anderson's masterly role in modern condensed matter physics was manifest. Strong correlation physics, including Mott insulators, was in the air,” Baskaran says. Later in his career, Baskaran worked with professors who played a “lifting role” in his life, including R. Rajaraman, G. Rajasekaran, and Erio Tosatti. “I am thankful to my school, college, teachers, friends, my family, my mom Leelavathy, my dad Ganapathy, siblings, uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews, my wife Whiterose, my children, their spouses, and my grandchildren.”
With over 45,000 flights and 2 million passengers flying each day, keeping the airline industry on schedule is a herculean task. From mechanics and maintenance crews to flight teams and agents, and the ever-unpredictable mother nature, any of these factors can create a cascading domino effect of delays and cancellations—causing stress for both passengers and airlines. That's why advantages such as the enhanced connectivity of 5G are critical for airlines to track real-time issues and allow employees to quickly collaborate to keep flights on schedule. In this episode of The Restless Ones, we sit with Vikram Baskaran, Vice President of IT Services at Alaska Airlines, who is spearheading this once regional airline towards becoming one of the technology pioneers of the industry. Vikram believes the key to his mission of providing safe, award-winning experiences to Alaska's passengers is for his organization to act as a smart connector. With dozens of interdependent functions operating behind the scenes, Vikram has utilized 5G so Alaska employees can act as a “virtual flash mob,” working together as one. Beyond collaboration, multi-edge computing, VR, and increased automation capabilities are all on Vikram's roadmap to greater efficiency in the skies.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

India's government has promised support for the uncounted number of children who are either orphaned or have lost a parent in the Covid-19 pandemic that so far has infected more than 30 million people in the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's promise came as suspicious offers to adopt Covid orphans surfaced on the social media amid worries parentless kids could walk into traps laid out by child traffickers. The government said it will pay stipends from a million-rupee (11,000-euro) fund which it will be set up for each of the Covid-affected children to help them through schooling until 18 years of age. The grant will then be transferred in their names once they turn 23, to steer them into stable adulthood. "The prime minister said that in such trying times it is our duty, as a society, to care for our children and instill hope for a bright future. “All children who have lost both parents or surviving parent or legal guardian or adoptive parents due to Covid-19 will be supported,” the prime minister's office said in a statement. The state will also reimburse other expenses and help kids with scholarships, according to the 29 May pledge which drew applause in India where children account for 39 percent of the 1.3 billion population. Numbers vary Estimates of the number of children orphaned or minors left with one parent vary widely in India. Late last month, the Ministry of Women and Child Development said 577 children were orphaned in April and May when a second surge buffeted the country. According to media reports, a child rights group put the number of children who lost one or both parents at 30,071 but the national agency stressed all the deaths were not linked to Covid-19. Some 3,621 children were orphaned, 26,176 lost one parent and 274 were abandoned by 5 June, the National Commission for Protection of Children Rights (NCPCR) was quoted as saying. The details were given to the courts just days after NCPCR chairman Priyank Kanoongo sounded a nationwide alert on 26 May. “The commission has been receiving many complaints in the past month or so, alleging that there are private people, organisations who are involved in data collection of such children …” NCPCR said in an advisory to Indian states. “It has become essential that the rights of children are upheld and protected and there is tracking of each child who has become orphan or has lost either of the parents to Covid-19,” it added. Shobha Gupta, a lawyer, argued orphaned children can be adopted only through established legal procedures. “Social media posts are circulating that children are up for adoption. This is plainly illegal and violates the Juvenile Justice Act,” Gupta told the top court. Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, has ordered local officials to track adoption-seekers on the social media to fight off potential traffickers. Helping hands for Covid orphans But observers say some of the offers were perhaps a result of an outpouring of concern for the children orphaned by the second wave, which has accounted for 57 percent of India's 393,000 Covid deaths. “But at the same time, one must follow the law of the land,” said Debyani, a housewife in the southern city of Bangalore, where SOS Children's Village said it has taken in around 260 Covid orphans this year. “We have enough ‘Mothers' right now to take care of the children already placed in the Village but we are looking for more as we may need them in the future,” said S. Baskaran, director of the private charity. Authorities in the state of Telangana have said they will hand out free mobile phones as a protection tool for Covid orphans in the southern state where the virus has killed more than 3,500 people. "They can find help just a click away and can contact any of the officers, numbers of whom have been saved in the phone's contact list,” said T. Akkeshwar Rao, a state government official. Many of India's 28 states have come out with separate promises which include laptops for school-goers, hostels or even cash to pay for weddings, in support of India's orphan children.

Priya Baskaran, Professor of Law at American University Washington College of Law, talks with Jon about economic justice incubators and her ideas for how to better reintegrate returning citizens into society and the local economies they return to.
In this episode, Priya Baskaran, Assistant Professor at American University Washington College of Law, discusses her draft article "Flint, Appalachia & the Green New Deal: Water Justice in America's Forgotten Places." She begins by explaining how and why she uses the term "geographically disadvantaged places." She observes that seemingly disparate distressed communities like Flint, Michigan and McDowell County, West Virginia actually share many infrastructure problems, and that those problems are the result of similar historical policy choices. She argues that the problems facing those communities didn't "just happen," but are the result of corporate and government choice, and that solving those problems will require a concerted policy effort. We return to the Garmin Nuvi 2598LMTH to try Garmin's companion application for it, BaseCamp. Aravindh Baskaran is back to help Tim Keirnan try to create a customized commute route in to the office and upload the route to the GPS unit. This is a very informal usability test and Tim wanted Aravindh around because the first time Tim tried to do this, he was not successful. Aravindh has used Base Camp to create car club routes on back roads with the Windows version of BaseCamp, so he is acting as informal usability test moderator. The initial use usability problems Tim encountered were nothing compared to the design failure he found transferring the route to the Garmin GPS unit and using it. If you would like to follow along, you can download a Windows or Macintosh version of BaseCamp at Garmin's website: www.garmin.com Listener Costan Boiangiu's excellent email about the UX of GPS devices kicks off this episode, and the informal usability test critique of BaseCamp starts about 15 minutes in.
Aravindh Baskaran joins Tim Keirnan for a critique of the Garmin Nuvi 2598LMTHD. We follow our usual critique structure that includes the following: Encounter Decision Purchase Out of the Box Initial Use Longitudinal Use The Garmin 2598 is an interesting mixture of excellence and frustration. On the positive side, we found that * The map screens, both day and night versions, are very well designed. * The voice sounds terrific because it is both pleasant stylistically and cuts through the noise of the car sonically. * The device is fairly quick in its operation, including finding satellites (unless you are indoors, but why are you driving indoors?) On the negative side, we found that * The vaunted voice interface doesn't work well at all. Very frustrating. * The un-changeable and incessant alarm for school zones within a half mile of the car is extremely frustrating and can make us ignore alarms in general. * The unit occasionally freezes and no amount of pressing or tapping the screen will bring it back, forcing the user to unplug power from the unit and restart it. * Inexplicable routing can ignore oft-travelled commutes and actually send us the long way around. And sometimes Tim got a different route home if his address was in the Home saved location rather than his address being in the Recent list. * The settings don't encourage quickly finding what you want to adjust. Finally, email from listener Katie was a wonderful compliment to starting a new year of episodes. Thank you for listening, Katie.
Time for a mobile episode! Aravindh Baskaran, UX researcher and designer, joins Tim Keirnan to look at the user experience of Android Lollipop. What did we like about it and what do we think could be better? With Android Marshmallow on the way, it's time to reflect on Lollipop's effectiveness.Android is used, in one form or another, by more customers around the world than any other mobile OS (stats we found on this were so inconsistent that we gave up looking, but Android was clearly in the lead in all mobile OS usage stats). We used Aravindh's Nexus 5 phone for this episode because Tim's Nexus 4 now has Ubuntu Touch on it. The blog post image is Lollipop's list design that you'll hear us discuss when we refer to Google's "Material Design".Note when critiquing Android UIs: Aravindh and Tim are critiquing pure Android as designed by Google and used on their Nexus devices and (for the most part) on Motorola's smart phones. Other manufacturers can and do take advantage of Android's open source nature to create their own Android UI that can be grossly inferior to pure Android or innovative, depending on one's point of view. So the UX of Android is not one thing as with iOS and Windows Phone, but a fragmented mix of competing interpretations of Google's Android reference design.Email from Jan Jursa and Costan Boiangiu concludes this episode. Head over to Jan's wonderful Information Architecture Television and take advantage of all the great material there:http://iatelevision.blogspot.com/
