BURTON CUMMINGS - The GUESS WHO's Voice that Rocked the World

A Breath of Fresh Air

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 28, 2024 52:00

Burton Cummings' voice has been rated among the finest in rock music. Today he continues at the top of his game as performer, singer, songwriter, poet and recording artist. As lead singer and songwriter for Canada's original rock ‘n' roll superstars, The Guess Who, Burton scored an unprecedented string of international hit singles and albums including “American Woman,” “These Eyes,” “Laughing,” “No Time,” “Share the Land,” “No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature,” “Clap for the Wolfman”, “Albert Flasher” and others, all written or co-written by Burton. By 1970, The Guess Who had sold more records than the entire Canadian music industry combined before breaking up in 1975. The group achieved a long list of firsts including first Canadian group to reach #1 on Billboard charts -- holding that spot for three weeks - and first to earn a platinum album for U.S. sales of more than one million copies. Rolling Stone magazine hailed The Guess Who as “one of rock's most consistently fascinating maverick bands” with a succession of songs “that has few equals among contemporary North American groups.” Dick Clark described the group as rock innovators and ambassadors of Canadian music. Beginning his career as a solo artist in 1976, Burton continued his winning streak with a gold record for his solo debut single “Stand Tall,” produced by legendary hitmaker Richard Perry who numbered among his clients Barbra Streisand, Carly Simon and Ringo Starr. The choice of producer was evidence of Burton's star power in the music industry. He followed his inaugural solo success with more than a dozen hit singles and albums including “I'm Scared,” “My Own Way to Rock,” “I Will Play a Rhapsody,” “Timeless Love,” “Break It to Them Gently,” “Dream of a Child,” and “You Saved My Soul.” Sold-out tours across Canada and the United States solidified Burton's stature as a top entertainer. He starred in several highly rated television specials and, between 1977 and 1980, earned five Juno Awards for Best Male Vocalist and Best Album, serving as host of the annual Juno gala a record four times. Burton's 1978 album Dream of a Child became the first quadruple platinum-selling album by a Canadian artist. Through the ‘80s and ‘90s, Burton continued to tour and joined Beatles drummer Ringo Starr's All Starr Band. In 1980, a starring role in the feature film Melanie with Miami Vice star Don Johnson earned Burton a Genie Award for Best Original Song. He also launched his acclaimed Up Close and Alone solo concert series. A live album of the same name followed. The success of Lenny Kravitz' cover of “American Woman” in the hit feature film Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me brought renewed attention to the original Guess Who. The group reunited in 1999 for the closing ceremonies of the Pan-American Games with a television audience numbering in the tens of millions. Several high-profile North American tours followed. As the VOICE of all the classic Guess Who hit songs, Burton has toured with his long-time band, for the past twenty-three years across North America as well as joining Randy Bachman onstage as Bachman Cummings, performing his songs from the original The Guess Who, Bachman-Turner Overdrive and Burton's solo career. Described as Canadian rock ‘n' roll royalty, a national treasure, and a living legend, for Burton Cummings there has always been one constant: he remains true to himself and his own way to rock… and continuing to perform the songs the way they were originally conceived by the artist who sang and wrote/co-wrote them. Burton joins us this week to share his musical story and lets us know about his other passion - writing poetry. For more information head to his website burtoncummings.com

Observe the 93rd is an alternative rock band from Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. It's comprised of vocalist/guitarist Derek Henry and drummer Dylan Zepp. Their focus will always be "raw, authentic expression." The songs are guided by a feeling, an idea, an experience, failure, triumph, suffering, joy...any abstract internal entity that yearns to be externalized. Sometimes the expression of this is a means of reflection, sometimes a means of relief and survival, and other times merely an exploration of the mind or ideas. Observe has played shows with: Foxy Shazam, Fuel, Three Days Grace, Stone Temple Pilots, Seether, Puddle of Mudd, Otherwise, Flyleaf, Lacey Sturm, Cold, Sponge, Drowning Pool, Saliva, Joyous Wolf, From Ashes to New, P.O.D., Icon For Hire, Conquer Divide, The Funeral Portrait, Rivals.

#74 - Ari Axelrod: Jewish Identities in Show Business

MichaelKushner

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 31, 2022 77:30

This episode is special. I mean… really special. Ari Axelrod is an artist and I've seen him in action, growing throughout the years. The episode is sort of broken down into three parts. What crafts a great cabaret? Our views on the multi-hyphenate. And Jewish identities in showbusiness, which is a huge topic of conversation right now.  When it comes to cabaret, according to Axelrod, cabaret should be perfectly imperfect. It is the art of being yourself on purpose. So what are the pitfalls an artist creating a concert or cabaret can run into? What is the purpose for which you're doing one? How can you best prepare? And what does it really mean when you choose not to memorize your lyrics…   “I want to hear the lyrics as you. I don't want to hear it as the song because I'll tune out. It's the difference between being a tour guide and a travel agent. A tour guide says, “Let me show you all of the things. Let me facilitate your journey. The travel agent says, ‘Where do you want to go? I will help you go to wherever you need to go.'” When it comes to the multi-hyphenate, it's simple to Ari. “It reminds me of what you said before. Straight, cis, white men – they have the keys to the door,” says Axelrod. “People who come from marginalized communities, and whatever marginalization that is, they have to find other ways into the building. And sometimes it means having multiple ways in because the front door is locked for them. So we have to climb through the window, or go through the chimney, or building another building. It's exactly what you're saying, that's what being a multi-hyphenate is. It's telling our stories in all of the ways, flexing all of our artistic muscles and integrity, to be able to reflect the full capacity of our world.” And the most important topic of this episode – what it means and feels like to be Jewish today. And how does that relate to our work in the industry? Anti-semitism, unfortunately, is rearing its ugly head once again. So, how do respond to it? And more importantly – how do we stop it? “Anti-semitism looks different on the left than on the right. It looks different here. Everywhere. I think the thing that people don't understand – the main problem, specifically, within our industry is that there is a lack of education in terms of what a Jew looks like. What a Jew is.” Ari is an actor, director, singer, and Jewish activist. He recently received the 2022 Bistro Award for Theatrical Performance in Song for his show, "Ari's Arias." His award-winning show, "A Place For Us: A Celebration of Jewish Broadway," began with a sold-out run at the historic Birdland Jazz Club, featuring six-time Emmy & Tony nominee Tovah Feldshuh, and has since grown to international acclaim performing to sold-out audiences around the world. In 2020, he received a MAC Award nomination for Best Male Vocalist and won the BroadwayWorld Award for Best Live Zoom Performance. Ari Axelrod's first solo show, "Taking the Wheel," directed by Tony Award winner Faith Prince, and music directed by multiple MAC Award winner Alex Rybeck, has been performed in numerous cities around the country. Ari's work as a director has been seen at the Tony Award-winning Paper Mill Playhouse, Birdland Jazz Club, 54 Below, and The Green Room 42. Ari is a recipient of The Jewish Week's prestigious 36 Under 36 Award, which "honors 36 noteworthy Jewish leaders, all 36 years old or younger, who make New York — and its many Jewish communities — better. These entrepreneurs, young leaders, and changemakers bring remarkable energy and new ideas to religion, philanthropy, the arts, Jewish learning, campus life, social action, inclusion, and justice. Tristan Cole is an award-winning singer-songwriter, model, actor, and dancer whose genre of music includes Country, Pop and R&B. We had a great talk about live performances versus video performances and how getting back out on the road is letting Tristan connect with his fans again on a personal level. He shares his thoughts on the current Pop/RnB genres of music and why he is so happy writing and performing country songs that trace back to his roots in North Carolina. Tristan has definitely had his share of ups and downs in the music business and it's great to hear how he is excited again with sharing his music with us. Make sure to connect with him on social media and I can attest he is responsive with his fans.ABOUT Tristan ColeAs a youth, Tristan Cole gained the attention of both Lou Pearlman, CEO of Transcontinental Records, (responsible for signing NSync, Backstreet Boys, and Britney Spears) and Christian “Dio” Diodatti, CEO of Caliber Records (responsible for remixes for Michael Jackson and Mary J. Blige among others). A Statement from Marcus:  "I wrote The Difference You Make (2015) because I lost my soul brother to suicide in 2012. His name was Wade Fisher and something that I struggled with pretty heavily after he died was shame and guilt. I couldn't stop thinking about all of the ways I could've saved him…all the ways I should've saved him. Shortly thereafter, I connected with a wonderful organization called, Samaritans. They embraced my grief in a way I had never experienced before and they invited me to consider all of the times I actually HAD saved him and just not been aware. I began thinking about the potentially life-saving secret impact that we all have on one another other each day and I wanted to write a song that spoke to that powerful dynamic. If there is anything your listeners take away from this song, my hope is that they realize their own secret life-saving power and to anyone struggling with any kind of mental illness - you are not alone." When I heard him live for the first time, I was blown away not only by how well he sang and played, but how easy he makes it seem. I became an instant fan. There are a lot of artists out there, but few even come close to the amount of talent he has. He combines Jazz, R&B, Pop like nobody I know. He's so good he makes you want to go home and practice your scales. If you haven't had a chance to hear Matt, you're missing out on a world class artist." - Javier Colon, Universal Records and winner of NBC’s “The Voice”

The story of Bobby Jo Valentine is a rare one: it’s about vulnerability and courage, raw talent and hard work. With truly transcendent lyrics and a voice that touches the soul, Bobby captures the heart of audiences across the country. His songs — all based on highly personal experiences — contain nuggets of pure gold, resonating and reaching to to the listener, no matter their walk of life.Bobby Jo is a master lyricist. His sense of realism, charm and infectious vocal melodies have earned the praises of industry veterans like Brian Lucey, mastering engineer for The Shins and The Black Keys: “Bobby writes with a sweetness and honesty seldom heard in acoustic pop music.” Just as importantly, those same attributes have earned Bobby Jo an ever-expanding fan base and the West Coast Songwriter Association’s Songwriter of the Year Award. His new album “Home” attacks matters of the heart with thoughtful stories, catchy choruses, and a fantastic team of musicians behind him. Calvin Turnbull is at the producing helm, with credits worked from Sheryl Crow to Five for Fighting and other greats; David Hayes, known best for his work with Van Morrison for 40 years, brings his timeless sound to the bass tracks; and Dave Tweedie, one of the biggest drummers in the pop industry today, adds syncopated, catchy rhythms. Other instruments – accordions, steel guitar, piano, organ – and several guest performers help create clear, honest soundscapes for his stories to be told. All these things come together to echo Bobby’s impressive lyrical depth.Bobby Jo’s albums have garnered overwhelmingly positive reviews, but more noteworthy are the responses to his honest, raw, resonating live performances. Dubbed “The nicest guy ever to pick up an acoustic guitar” by LA Weekly, his unique brand of hopeful folk/pop has also recently been featured in a commercial for the new Ford Fusion.Bursting with energy, realistic optimism and filled with uplifting, honest messages about hope and life’s struggles, Bobby Jo continues to gather new listeners with every live performance. “Armed with just a guitar and ukulele, Bobby aims straight for the heart.” -Bruce Kaplan, Folk UnlimitedBobby Jo lives 30 miles north of San Francisco with his partner, and travels around the nation for 15-20 shows each month, developing a loyal following with warm, inviting melodies and lyrics filled with depth and hope.Additional PressWinner, 2013 Rising Star Contest (Judges include CAA Agent Brad Bissel, Rick Young of Warner Music, and Radio Industry Executives)Appearance in a new 2013 Ford Fusion commercialWinner, Songwriter of the YearWest Coast Songwriter’s Association“Witty wordplay, clever melodies…the nicest guy to ever pick up an acoustic guitar.”LA WEEKLY“Bobby Jo Valentine’s vocals express raw, tender emotions and his lyrics are refreshingly original. His audience will be charmed with “Be Mine” and touched deeply with “Fly,” running the gamete of emotions that make for an entertaining and heartfelt journey.”Jan White, West Coast Songwriter’s Association“It’s really lovely.”Judah Dadone, Lead singer, Freelance Whales“5 out of 5 stars. Bobby writes with a sweetness and honesty seldom heard in acoustic pop music.”Brian Lucey, (The Black Keys, The Shins, Sigur Ros)“If Jason Mraz, Jack Johnson, and Regina Spektor were to combine forces, you would have Bobby Jo Valentine. Soulful and uplifting, soothing and calming, Valentine’s music is the perfect blend of indie and modern pop/rock. Often times it is quite difficult to switch from genre to genre or to switch styles and tones, but Bobby Jo Valentine does so with ease. His voice is passionate and beautiful, using his soothing ways to demonstrate his musicality and versatility. His musicality separates himself from any other artist out there presently, and A Place To Belong is the proof.”Alexa Spieler, A-List Music-----Jack MozieJack Mozie is a singer, songwriter, and producer.
