Welcome The Great Metal Debate podcast, bringing you another release straight from the underground. Today, we will he talking about the debut album Ex Umbra In Lucem from the symphonic blackened death metal band Lamentari. This Denmark based band has released 3 EPs and 2 singles before dropping their first full-length record and I'm going to say straight from the get-go, this is exactly the type of metal I crave. It was a little over a month ago when I discovered this band on YouTube. The music video for the song "Dolorum Memoria". The album opens with an angelic choir in the intro track "Spiritus Noctus" before pummeling you with the song "Tenebrae". It's a bombastic track that will give you a small taste of what's to come. The choir continues throughout this track and returns during many moments throughout this whole album. "Tragoedia In Domo Dei" has thunderous opening double bass blastbeats which goes straight into the symphonic sound. The element of brass instrumentation, strings and choir make it a near perfect listening experience. Once it passes the 2:50 mark in the song, we get an acoustic guitar moment with a bass riff that sounds just like something straight out of technical death metal. It reminded me so much of Obscura and Beyond Creation that I checked to see if Jamie de la Sencerie had an 8 string fretless. But no, he is making that sound with a regular 4 string. The tempo picks back up again at around 4:30 stamp. The harmonizing choir is hypnotic and easily rivals what Septicflesh has been doing all these years but with a more melodic black metal style. At the same time, none of Lamentari's music sounds derivative. Instead it all feels fresh and original. I love how Thomas' drums sound both loud in the mix but at the same time it doesn't over power the rest of the music. "Intra Muros Mentis" immediately begins with some electric guitar sweeps for the first 30 seconds before exploding into that somewhat traditional black metal sound. Except the rhythm guitar remains audible without the obnoxious buzzsaw riff, all thanks to the shredding by guitarist Michael Møller. The lead guitarist Emil is also another standout member of this impressive band. Onto a very upbeat track we have "Appugno" which continues on that path to greatness. To me, Lamentari is a real treasure of band who knows how to be simultaneously fast but melodic in the most symphonic way possible. It's truly rare to get real talented musicians like this who are new to their craft but seem to be master composers. Then we get to the song "Dolorum Memoria" which is the music video I mentioned at the start of this review. This whole album is a very strong contender for Album of the Year but if for some reason it doesn't end up being #1, this song is definitely song of the year. I absolutely adore these acoustic guitars and whisper vocals. This 8 minute long masterpiece will make you close your eyes and really listen and relax. The calmness continues into this album's 2nd instrumental which serves as a soothing prelude to the final track. "Spiritus Diurnus" has the church-like choir once more but has the perfect classical music violin strings which turn into what can be best described as a Hans Zimmer score for a Christopher Nolan film. Too bad its only 1:27. the closer to this breathtaking album is a 7 in a half minute long track titled "Arcanum Ignis Animae". I will say as a very minor critique, I feel like Daniel Lønberg's vocals could use just a little bit of work. If he could maintain the deeper style more often like he did in the song "Dolorum Memoria", I could enjoy this record even more than I already am. I'm going to score Lamentari - Ex Umbra In Lucem with a glorious 9/10 rating. Be sure to follow Lamentari on Facebook. All of their music is on bandcamp but their t-shirt and vinyl record is available at merchcity.com

Johnny Ciardullo (Carcosa, AngelMaker & Bastian) & I have a conversation about how he conquered 2020, his 1st beers, the soundtrack of his youth, his 1st shows, mastering social media, being an independent artist, working with Bradley Zorgdrager, a Johnny Ciardullo brew & his hangover cure. Throughout this chat, Johnny enjoyed a cup of Hazelnut Coffee while I enjoyed Overhop Canada x Beyond Creation's "Entre Stout Et Mirage" the 6% ABV Stout with Brazilian coffee from Barbosa Family, roasted at Bean et Bonheur & Ambunana Chips the Brazilian wood used to age cachaça which was brewed as a part of Brewtal North America. "Entre Stout Et Mirage" poured out with a jet black veil with a fluffy Cappuccino colored head, slapped cinnamon as well coffee on the nose & smashed coffee & caramel on the finish. Beyond Creation have become a giant in the tech death arena since forming in 2005 (under a different moniker) and, have done this with just three full lengths which is impressive to say the least. Beyond that, the band has a progressive side as well that went full tilt on their last album Algorythm (Season of Mist). Now, they've paired with Vox and Hops Brewtal North America and Overhop for a stout beer named closely after one of their songs. Our main man on the mic, Buke, chats with Simon Girard about this new beer venture and how it all came about as well as the whys of picking a coffee stout to be their maiden voyage into the beer market. They also cover technical death metal in general, band and personal musical history and how Simon's Grandfather made a huge impact on him, the explosion of craft breweries in Montréal as well as stateside, some of Simon's favorite beers and favorite death metal, and how they continue to experiment with tech death without crossing the line of alienating fans. As a bonus, we get some talk about Simon's upcoming solo album. This is an excellent chat so jump in and enjoy!9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram
Welcome back to another edition of Technically Inclined! In Round 3, we took a gander at Quebecois quartet Beyond Creation, and their debut album, The Aura.Beyond Creation formed in Montreal in 2005 and released The Aura via PRC Music in 2011. (Season of Mist later reissued the album in 2013.) While the album can frustrate at times, it also showcases a (then-)young band with a lot of promise -- promise that the band would go on to fulfill on 2014's Earthbound Evolution and 2018's Algorythm. No further spoilers in this here little blurb -- for our full thoughts, you'll have to jump in and take a listen!---BEYOND CREATION LINKS: Listen to The Aura | Band Website | FacebookNINE CIRCLES LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram
Escuchar audio

For their first shows on home soil in over 12 months Ne Obliviscaris are bringing with them a stellar support group, headed by Brisbane's Caligula's Horse and rounded out by three international heavyweights in Allegaeon, Beyond Creation and Rivers of Nihil. It is a travelling extravaganza dubbed The Painted Progression tour and one which clean vocalist and violinist for Ne Obliviscaris, Tim Charles, struggles to contain his enthusiasm about."We're all kind of related but different", he laughed. "Caligula's Horse are obviously one of Australia's best progressive rock metal bands. Their last album 'In Contact' was just phenomenal and I guess they're a little more on the melodic side than some of the other bands. Allegaeon have a new album coming out in April which I've been lucky enough to get an advance copy of and I think it's the best thing they've ever done. Those guys are a really fantastic live band, really technical but with lots of melody as well and super tight live. Beyond Creation - some of our Australian fans will already know them if they came and saw our tour back in 2014 - are again a phenomenal live band; super technical but melodic in their own way and a great bunch of guys as well - as are all of the bands on the bill - and Rivers of Nihil put out one of the most surprising albums of last year. It was a real progressive wonder of an album with these sweeping saxophone solos and all this sort of stuff and we really felt they were a perfect fit for us in the way that the approach being heavy but also progressive and extreme at the same time. They do it differently to us but in a way that we felt was really compatible with what we're doing. Every band is a little bit different but they all kind of fit together".When Ne Obliviscaris first burst onto the Melbourne music scene in 2003 it is fair to say they were a breath of fresh air on a scene that was starting to choke up with progressive music. They refused to follow a set blueprint and instead set about forging their name in their own image, albeit it one which drew influence from some of the heavyweights of the time."Back then there was some pretty significant things happening in the metal world that impacted me", Charles recalled. "It was probably not too long before that that I discovered Opeth through their Blackwater Park album and Enslaved came out with an album and Dream Theatre had not long before come out with Scenes From A Memory. All of these albums were my favourite records at that time so when we were starting this band I never wanted to sound like anybody but the idea that you could be an extreme and really heavy metal band but at the same time be melodic and have beautiful elements to your music was something that I had kind of recently discovered and been inspired by. Some of those bands like Opeth and Enslaved that were doing that opened our horizons to the fact of let's not have any barriers when we write music. Let's just write music and if we think it's good it doesn't matter what genre it is. If it's metal or acoustic or prog or classical or jazz let's not care. Let's just try to write good music and not give a fuck what anyone thinks we should sound like and that's how we came up with our sound because I don't think anyone sounds like we do, and all we did was just try to be ourselves. We just tried to get rid of the barriers and let each member be themselves in the band. We're all quite different musicians and everyone has that opportunity in our band to have that creative voice and that shines through in the music I think".With their debut album 'Portal of I' in 2012 Ne Obliviscaris created a masterpiece that not only resonated with the fans but also had mainstream media singing their praises. It was one of the first times music of this nature had reached the ears of the mainstream and be met with appraisal and was a significant moment in Australian progressive metal music."That album was our first real attempt to create", Charles reflected. "It was our first album so it was our first attempt to create a piece of music that was exactly what we wanted and as a first attempt, it's never going to be perfect in every way. You learn something from every album but that was really something different to what a lot of people were expecting from a lot of the stuff that was being released in 2012 and so people would hear that record and there was a lot of people that either loved it and thought it was fantastic or they just didn't get it at all - which is fine as well (laughs), but it is that thing where a few people seemed to connect with it and it gave us a lot of hope and positivity for the band in regards to believing that as a strong first step we could continue to move forward. It took us nine years to release that first album and it was really, really difficult to just make it that far in the first place. There were so many times in the band's early career where we almost broke up. Our lead guitarist Benji is from France and his Australian visa got denied back in 2010 and he was deported and the band was basically on hiatus for 18 months and a few of the guys were talking about quitting the band - and Dan our drummer actually did for a little while - but thankfully we managed to get Benji back to Australia and the band got back together essentially and we released the album and when it did well it gave us the faith of hey it's taken us nine years to get here but maybe all the struggle has been worth it and maybe we should keep pushing and see what we can do with some more releases".Most bands would be content to plagiarize their own successful formula on their sophomore album, but not so Ne Obliviscaris who decided to add more jazz and flamenco elements to 2014's 'Citadel' - a move that only served to solidify their growing reputation."We don't really know any other way, to be honest", Charles shrugged. "We just write and however it comes out is how it comes out. We try not to overthink it. We don't think let's write an album like this or let's write a song like that. We just write and we really don't care what people want us to sound like, but we have the confidence that we can write good music so the bar that we set is for us to be happy and for us to think that it's great music. We have confidence that if we really believe these are the best songs we can possibly write at this stage of our lives then it will find an audience and people can connect with it. If it's different all it will mean is maybe some people won't like it as much but if it's good then new people will discover you and that was our same approach on 'Urn' as well which was different and the next album we do I'm sure will probably be different again and some people will like the older stuff more and some people might like the newer stuff more and that's fine. But if you try to do stuff to please people then you lose that genuine aspect to your music. We're trying to create art, it's not pop songs so we don't really care what people want it to sound like. We just want to make sure that we love and believe in what we're doing first and foremost".Kris Peters TOUR DATES Thursday, May 9: Lion Arts Factory, Adelaide - Lic/AA Friday, May 10: 170 Russell, Melbourne Saturday, May 11: Manning Bar, Sydney Sunday, May 12: The Triffid, Brisbane Tickets on sale from neobliviscaris.com.au
Surprising no one, we're cutting it right down to the wire on this one...Huzzah! The Album of the Month series returns, bestowing the honor upon Beyond Creation and their new LP Algorythm -- our Album of the Month selection for October 2018! Chris, Anton, Hera and Vince get together to talk about the Montreal band's third album which dropped October 12 on Season of Mist and its rich complexity, owing in no small part to the fretless bass heroics of new member Hugo Doyon-Karout. Tech death vs. technical death metal is debated, as are the merits of Archspire. What's never in question is how much Algorythm slaps, paying as much attention to songwriting and atmosphere as technical prowess. There's even some time left over to discuss what else the team has been listening to over the course of the month. So jump on in and enjoy the hijinks. Better yet, head on over to Bandcamp and give Beyond Creation a listen, too! 9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

This week we have a super exciting guest! I'd try to slowroll it, but obviously from the episode title you can guess that it's Herman Li of Dragonforce. We discuss a variety of topics, including the upcoming Dragonforce album Reaching Into Infinity, success, haters, creativity, Babymetal, video games and more. Herman was a great guest! Also Eden and I discuss some news after the interview. Chuck Berry's passing and the way the coverage has handled his problematic legacy, a bunch of new music, and Earth's Hibernaculum and Machine Head's The Blackening turning 10 years old. The new music includes Somnium Vox, Bloodshot Dawn, Entheos (not that one), Witherfall, Northlane, Emmure, Gorod, Enslaved, Solstafir, Beyond Creation (kind of). We also continue last week's discussion on how the mentality focusing on new music sometimes makes us overlook albums, in this case Metallica's latest. In our cool people section we discuss Netflix's Marvel's Iron Fist and Better off Ted.
