What are your hobbies? I personally enjoy dance, specifically latin dance and often I wonder, “What if I could translate salsa dancing into a toy or game?”. Well today, we're going to explore that possibility. Today my guest shares how she turned her hobby into a best selling board game!In this episode of Making It in the Toy Industry, I'm joined by Elizabeth Hargrave, award-winning board game designer and co-founder of the Tabletop Game Designers Association. You might know her from her hit game Wingspan, which turned the world of nature and birdwatching into one of the most beloved engine-building games of all time.Elizabeth shares how she took her passion for the natural world and used it to build a meaningful and immersive game that fully translated the experience of birding. Our conversation today circles around how to accurately translate the “experience” of doing various hobbies to a tabletop play pattern. In my opinion that's the secret sauce of how Elizabeth created such an incredible game on her first try.During this episode, we also talk about her upcoming game Sanibel, inspired by collecting seashells on the beach. A hobby so simple and a game so elegant, that I'm sure you'll find yourself inspired to build a tabletop experience based on your hobbies.Listen For These Important Moments:[00:01:12] - What started as a love for birdwatching became Wingspan, a wildly successful board game that blends strategy with nature through clever engine-building mechanics.[00:04:07] - Elizabeth introduces the Tabletop Game Designers Association, which offers support with contracts, advocacy, and education, perfect for both new and seasoned game designers.[00:10:51] - From butterflies to beachcombing, see how personal passions can evolve into meaningful, immersive game themes that resonate with players.[00:23:07] - Elizabeth's Wingspan pitch journey proves you don't. Learn how smart feedback, persistence, and a strong prototype can open doors for your game invention.[00:34:49] - Even with success, staying grounded in playtesting and peer feedback is key to creating games that last. Episode 583: Top Rated Open Drafting Games Episode release date is June 18, 2025 Show Notes This week we are concluding our discussion of open drafting games. This episode we will be picking out games off the top Open Drafting Games, some games we missed and some we don't own. Intro of Meeple Nation The World's Most Okayest Podcast Web Page Links to Episodes SaltPOD: A SaltCON Podcast Bios Email us at MeepleNation@gmail.com Patreon Instagram @meeplenation Facebook Meeple Nation Facebook Group Meeple Nation Off Air X Meeple Nation Discord Meeple Nation Become a Chanameeple Sponsorship Game Toppers SaltCON Meeple Nation Gaming Highlights (Highlight-Thirty) Nathan Living Forest Siege of Rundar, Game I could not remember The Guild of Merchant Explores Andy D&D 5.5 Japanese Setting In board game mechanics, open drafting is a specific type of drafting where players take turns selecting items (like cards, tiles, dice, or tokens) from a shared, visible pool of options. To touch on the key points again. Open Drafting and Market games will have a lot of overlap. Key Characteristics of Open Drafting: Shared Pool: There's a central display or common area where all the items available for selection are laid out. Visibility: All players can see all the available options in the pool at all times. This is the defining feature of "open" drafting. Turn-Based Selection: Players take turns choosing and taking one or more items from this shared pool. Once an item is taken, it's removed from the pool (or sometimes replaced immediately, depending on the game). Strategic Interaction: Because everyone can see what's available and what others are taking, open drafting encourages a high level of player interaction and strategic depth. Players aren't just thinking about what they need for their own strategy, but also: "Hate Drafting": Taking an item that might not be optimal for you, but is crucial for an opponent's strategy, thereby "denying" them that piece. This can be a friendly jab or a crucial tactical move. Anticipation: Trying to predict what other players will take on their turns based on their visible boards or strategies. Adapting: Adjusting your own plans if a key item you wanted is taken by an opponent. How it Differs from Other Drafting Types: The main contrast to open drafting is closed drafting (often called "pick-and-pass" or "hand drafting"): Closed Drafting: Players typically receive a hand of cards (or a set of items) and select one (or more) to keep, then pass the rest of their hand to the next player. The key difference is that the pool of options available to the next player is unknown until they receive the new hand. Players don't see the full communal pool; they only see their current hand. A lot of stuff happened this past weekend, so I spend a little time talking about the few things that stood out to me, including the ROG Xbox Ally, the bait and switch Resident Evil 9 announcement, and the reveal of a very cool-looking new game: There Are No Ghosts at the Grand. Of course, if you're sick of hearing about Summer Game Fest and all that nonsense, there's always what I've been playing, this week with Section 13, Trident's Tale, Spirit of the North 2, Keeper's Toll, and Bunny Cubed. It's time for another Mind Gap Podcast! This week, Noah Reno is back again to chat with Doug about what underrated piece of media they wish more people talked about. Next, the dorks have fun discussing how to reimagine childhood board games as horror films. Candyland is pitched as eating the sugary characters to survive. Chutes and Ladders becomes a cosmic horror. Jenga is a tale of the world being destroyed by children. There are so many more pitches PLUS suggestions from the community on how they would turn these classic games into something scary. Next, the guys discuss what board game would make the best horror franchise. Spoiler: Monopoly is one of the easiest ones to do. Things are wrapped up with a new game called Patch Notes: Real Life Edition, where Doug reads out patch notes for real life and Noah has to decide if they're good or if they should be scrapped as garbage. As the Lords do revel and wax rhapsodic o'er the delights of their newfound quest, they dost turn back the wheel of time, revisiting a discourse of yore, nigh eight years past, wherein was debated the merits of sandbox tales versus the guided path of on-rails adventures. William and Jordan chat about what happens when a decorator moves into your home, and the essential topic of what to call the telly remote control. Chat about quirky names for common items evolves into what to call your pants, and is William's Hyacinth Bucket jumper as bad as Jordan thinks? Plus, the boys get some very useful medical bum advice from G&Diva Sophie.
With the Nintendo Switch 2 officially released and one in-hand, I give my first impressions on what it's like using the console (very sparingly) and why the Switch 2 Pro controller is a noticeable upgrade over the previous model. If that's not enough excitement, I also talk about the recent PlayStation State of Play and the surprising game that stood out to me most--spoilers: it's Shakespearean. Of course, if those topics don't tickle your fancy, there's always what I've been playing, this week with Starlight Legacy, Polterguys: Possession Party, NanoApostle, Detective From The Crypt, Is This Game Trying to Kill Me?, and Mortisomem. Anyway and as always, thank you for watching or listening, I hope you enjoy this here episode, and I hope you have a wonderful wonderful rest of your day. (And if you haven't already, or are a listener and not a watcher, please like, subscribe, hit the bell, and all that jazz; it may not seem like much, but it goes a long way in helping support the show and site in general. I would appreciate it greatly.)
