Top Causes of Treatment Delay

Inside Lyme Podcast with Dr. Daniel Cameron

Welcome! Today, we're discussing the top causes of treatment delays for Lyme disease that I've encountered in my practice." Case Study: An 18-Month Struggle One of my patients was ill for 18 months. She had a tick bite and an atypical rash. Her ELISA titer was positive for Lyme disease, but she had only two IgG western blot bands. Despite multiple evaluations, Lyme disease was considered but dismissed after a negative test. She presented with Chronic Neurologic Lyme and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) and required extensive treatment due to these delays. Fortunately, she improved after treatment, but the delay made her recovery more challenging. Top Causes of Treatment Delays Here are the top causes of treatment delays I see in my practice: 1.  Absence of a Tick Bite: Many patients don't recall being bitten by a tick, leading to delays in considering Lyme disease.2.  Absence of a Rash: Not all Lyme disease patients develop a rash, which can cause misdiagnosis.3.  Atypical Rash: Only one in four Lyme disease cases present with the classic bull's eye pattern.4.  Equivocal or Negative Tests for Lyme: Inconsistent or negative test results can lead to delays in diagnosis.5.  Equivocal or Negative Tests for Co-Infections: Co-infections like Babesia may not be detected, complicating diagnosis.6.  Dismissal as Another Illness: Symptoms may be mistaken for chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, gastroparesis, or other conditions.7.  Inadequate Public Health Information: Lack of awareness and information can lead to delays in seeking appropriate care.8.  Poor Understanding of the Signs and Symptoms of Lyme Disease: Misinterpretation of symptoms by both patients and healthcare providers.9.  Stigma Associated with the Diagnosis of Lyme Disease: Fear of stigma can prevent patients from seeking a diagnosis.10.  Difficulties Finding a Doctor Who Will Treat Lyme Disease: Limited access to Lyme-literate doctors can delay treatment.11.  Reliance on Symptomatic Treatment or Alternative Treatments: Focusing on symptomatic relief without considering Lyme disease.12.  Reluctance of Professionals to Consider Lyme Disease: Some healthcare providers are hesitant to diagnose Lyme disease. Addressing the Challenges Addressing these challenges requires raising awareness, improving diagnostic methods, and ensuring better access to doctors experienced in treating Lyme disease. Patients and healthcare providers need to be informed about the varied presentations and complexities of Lyme disease. Conclusion Understanding the causes of treatment delays helps us improve the timely diagnosis and treatment of Lyme disease. If you or someone you know is experiencing unexplained symptoms, consider consulting a doctor experienced in treating Lyme disease. Thank you for watching, and stay tuned for more insights on Lyme disease.

Today, I am blessed to have here with me Dr. Lori Bouchard. She completed her degree in Health Science at Western University and a Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine (the four-year full-time program) at the prestigious Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto.  Dr. Bouchard founded Inside Health, Ontario's most innovative naturopathic healing center, to help people reverse complicated and often misunderstood conditions such as Lyme, chronic fatigue, Hashimoto's, and infertility. More than a decade later, Inside Health offers a comprehensive range of naturopathic support, welcoming all those who wish to live in optimal health. With a special focus on cancer health, Dr. Bouchard is on a mission to help patients understand the real root of cancer and how gut health, genetics, and environmental factors impact tumor growth.  In this episode, Dr. Bouchard explains why it's a good sign when you get sick once or twice a year. Being sick is one of the ways our body can get rid of the garbage in our cells. Then, Dr. Bouchard dives into all things cancer, including how to support the body, the importance of attitude, and how the cells communicate during this time. Plus, Dr. Bouchard discusses all the different ways you can help the mitochondria. Tune in as we chat about eating the best types of foods with a cancer diagnosis, the connection between stress and disease, and managing sleep. If you never get sick, then your immune system never has a chance to purge toxicity.  Getting rid of garbage is a crucial thing for our bodies. You should be sick once or twice a year. However, you shouldn't be sick for lengthy periods.  [10:50] The Impact Your Feelings and Attitude Can Have With A Cancer Diagnosis You need to support the body when you have cancer.  Anger is going to make cancer way worse.  When you get a cancer diagnosis, it's a reason to look at your health and healing differently.  One in every two people in their lifetime will get cancer. 100% of men over the age of 80 have prostate cancer. Also, many people die with thyroid cancer but not from thyroid cancer.  Remember, cancer doesn't necessarily have to take your life; it's part of how your cells are aging.  [15:45] Did You Know That Cancer Is A Survival Mechanism?  Cancer is a survival mechanism.  Every single one of our cells has a slew of mitochondria. Each of the mitochondria produces energy. Stress, toxicity, inflammation, and glyphosates are damaging our mitochondria.  Cancer is your body trying to keep your cells alive.  [23:35] How To Support Your Mitochondrial Health  A 13-hour fast will support your mitochondria.  Eliminating toxicity will also help your mitochondria.  Get rid of foods with glyphosates, herbicides, and pesticides. Don't brush your teeth with damaging chemicals. Also, make sure you are going to the bathroom every day. If you are regularly eliminating, then you are not putting stress on the liver. Drinking lots of water will help keep your cells healthy.  [34:30] The Hospitals Are Feeding Cancer Patients The Wrong Types of Foods  Most doctors do not want to engage in a conversation about nutrition and cancer. We need to have a critical talk about fueling the body properly.  When you're in the hospital, they give you foods full of sugar, feeding cancer.  You'll do better with your cancer treatments if your body is in ketosis.  [39:40] Is Prostate Cancer Associated With Sedentary Behavior?  If you're given a prostate cancer diagnosis, they'll put you on androgen blockers to suppress your testosterone. However, Dr. Bouchard thinks people should be moving more. As we age, it's common for most people to sit at their computer all day long and not move. Testosterone declines when you aren't moving.  Dr. Bouchard likes to get men working on a hula hoop. In general, most people do not move around enough.  [42:30] The Connection Between Chronic Stress and Cancer  Fear, anxiety, sleepless nights, and high cortisol can worsen cancer. If lifestyle and food were the same, stress would make cancer worse. When your stress levels are high, your sleep and how you repair at night won't be the same. Living in the sympathetic nervous state is going to trigger cancer cells more. AND MUCH MORE! The Root Cause Medicine Podcast is created by Rupa Health, the best way to order, track & manage results from 30+ lab companies in one place for free. The Root Cause Medicine Podcast is a weekly one-on-one conversation with renowned medical experts, specialists, and pioneers who are influencing the way we look at our health and wellbeing. This week we're joined by Brendan Vermeire, Functional Medicine Consultant and Founder of Metabolic Solutions. In this episode, Brendan Vermeire talks about mental health, from depression, anxiety, and neuroinflammation to dementia and Alzheimer's. Brendan is a mental and metabolic health researcher, functional medicine educator, board-certified holistic practitioner, personal trainer, writer, speaker, and host of The Holistic Savage podcast. He is also the owner and founder of the Metabolic Solutions Institute for Functional Health and Fitness Practitioners and the Metabolic Solutions Research & Education Foundation, a not-for-profit foundation dedicated to "changing the way the world views mental health" through advancing the science of mental health dysfunction. Key Takeaways: Debunking the classic psychiatric narrative The current model of mental health treatment in the psychiatric world offers limited treatment options, such as pills or therapy, with little consideration for underlying causes of inflammation or other factors that could contribute to mental health issues. As a result, mental health practitioners like Brendan focus on studying more predominant theories, such as cytokine or neurotrophic ones. Inflammation and mental health symptoms Brendan represents inflammation as "the cleansing fire the immune system uses to fight off pathogens and remodel tissues." Inflammation can be driven by anything, including food, mold, viruses, or pathogens. Most people aren't aware of it, but the average American is inflamed at a low chronic meta-level, which drives the chronic disease epidemic, depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. The role of neuroplasticity in mental health Neuroplasticity refers to the brain's ability to change and adapt in response to experiences and environmental factors. It is a crucial process that underlies learning, memory formation, and the recovery of function after brain injury. Interventions that promote neuroplasticity, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness-based practices, and physical exercise, effectively improve symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions, which may help to promote positive changes in brain structure and function. How does the microbiome affect mental health? Changes in the microbiome can affect our mental health. Multiple research suggests that the microbiome composition can impact the brain through various mechanisms, including neurotransmitter regulation, inflammation, and immune system modulation. Additionally, some studies have found that a diverse and healthy microbiome is associated with better mental health outcomes. The Mental M.A.P. The Mental M.A.P. (Microglial Activation Profile) is a sophisticated lab panel that assesses the likelihood of microglial activation and neuroinflammation by evaluating multiple serological blood, urine, and even stool markers, as well as other core functions like methylation and nutrient imbalances. Also, check out Brendan's recommended lab testing: The Mental M.A.P., C-reactive protein test, Homocysteine, Thromboxane B2, and Kryptopyrrole Order these tests through Rupa Health - https://www.rupahealth.com/reference-guide

I had planned on covering a different topic on this episode. But this past Thursday a local farmer had a serious accident. Somehow she was entrapped in a hay baler. It was so bad they had to fly in a surgical team to surgically extract her from the equipment. That really is just a polite way to say that they had to cut off her arm. Now, this certainly is not the first time I’ve been aware of a farming accident. Unfortunately, I have lost cousins in farming accidents. My good friend Carl was killed in an accident in 2018. And a friend of mine from church lost his father-in-law last fall in a tractor roll over accident. I could also share with you stories of other family members and friends who have been seriously injured in ag related accidents. And so, this week I felt like it would be a good thing to talk about safety on the homestead. Did you know that in the US, 2 of the top most dangerous jobs are farming related? In fact, according to this article from USAToday.com, it is more dangerous to be a farmer than it is to be a police officer or firefighter. But, it’s not just adults that are at risk on our farms or homesteads. Farms and homesteads can be a dangerous place for kids. According to these stats from Rural Mutal Insurance: * 1 child dies in an ag related incident every 3 days * 33 children are seriously injured every day * Tractors cause 40 % of accidental farm deaths of children under 15 * More than half of young children injured on the farm were not working but were bystanders or playing in the wrong spot. These stats also reveal the following regards to the top sources of ag related deaths and injures:Top Causes of Fatal Ag Injuries * Machinery * Motor Vehicles (includes ATVs) *DrowningTop Cause of Non-Fatal Ag Injuries * Falls * Animal * Machinery/VehiclesNow, I realize that there is a fine line between what constitutes farming and what constitutes homesteading. But, let’s face it. As homesteaders we use a lot of equipment that many people who live in urban and suburban areas don’t ever touch. We are also involved in things that many people who live in urban and suburban areas aren’t involved in like DIY projects, animal husbandry, and food preservation just to name a few.All of these things; the equipment and projects carry a certain level of risk. And so, we need to manage that risk as best we can to ensure that we and our families do not become yet another statistic. So on this episode we talk about some of the causes of injuries on the homestead and things we can do to help mitigate or avoid those things all together. I want your homestead journey to be a beautiful one for you and your family. I don’t want to see it marred by injury, disfigurement or death. So, homestead safely my friends.Brianhttp://www.thehomesteadjourney.nethttps://www.facebook.com/TheHomesteadJourneyPodcasthttp://www.youtube.com/c/3BFarmandHomesteadhttps://www.facebook.com/3BFarmNY/https://www.instagram.com/thehomesteadjourneypodcast/?hl=enBrian@thehomesteadjourney.net

Burnout - physical or mental collapse caused by overwork or stress. Top Causes for Employee Burnout...Work-life balance doesn’t exist! After researching numerous articles, etc. I break down 5 different ways to help you create a solid work-life balance. 1. Own the hours of the day. a. Don’t let the day happen to you. Take control, manage your time and adhere to your boundaries. If the day controls you, just relax and do at least one thing that you enjoy to close your day. Tomorrow is a new day! 2. Be Happy… if you don’t have balance in your life many people will not be happy. a. A 2015 study that evaluated data from more than 30,000 Americans found a strong correlation between reported happiness and a longer life, which was consistent regardless of other circumstances, like health, education level, marital status, or financial situation. b. Researchers from University College London measured the happiness of 3,800 people between the ages of 52 and 79 and then tracked their health. After five years, 7 percent of the least happy people had died, compared to 4 percent of the happiest people. The researchers then estimated that happy older people are 35 percent less likely to die within five years than unhappy folks—even after all other factors are taken into consideration. c. A Carnegie Mellon University study found that people who demonstrate positive emotions are less likely to become ill after being exposed to a cold virus. 3. Explore your passions, interests and imagination. a. Carve out the time to read, research and/or create. Feed the parts outside of what you would call “work” because more often than not, those personal interests that may give you great joy are neglected. Write them down and start keeping track. You might notice patterns and trends that can turn into new hobbies (or a career!). 4. Care for your body. a. Dial into your energy levels and food cravings to decode any messages your body may be sending you. You might uncover that you’re over-stressed which can cause sleeplessness. As a result, energy levels can plummet and your body craves sugar for pick-me-ups that don’t last. 5. Saying NO a. Research from the University of California in San Francisco shows that the more difficulty you have saying no, the more likely you are to experience stress, burnout, and even depression (three things that hinder your emotional intelligence). Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify and manage your own emotions and the emotions of others.
