In this episode, Douglas Wilson celebrates the Trump EPA’s rollback of the greenhouse-gas endangerment finding as a blow against economic overreach, then turns to hamartiology and the New Testament word miasma to reflect on moral pollution, false conversion, and the danger of falling back into sin. He closes with a warm recommendation of A Gentleman in Moscow as a deeply engaging novel about life in captivity under communism. For more from Doug, subscribe to Canon+: https://canonplus.com/
So I want you to follow me closely here. A hypothetical Protestant republic, centuries from now, would be . . . chock full of Protestants. That would be the ethos of the whole place. Gaming it all out is how you test the principles of the various systems. What would still be there, and what would be long gone? Pride parades would be long gone. Catholic church bells would not be. Why and how come? Let’s talk about it. For more from Doug, subscribe to Canon+: https://canonplus.com/

How do we know what books should be included in our bibles? Is God still adding to the scriptures today? Pastor Shirk takes a look at the biblical tests that were applied by the early church when evaluating the canon of scripture.
In this episode, Douglas Wilson argues that the jury is still out on Trump’s tariffs, and the predicted instantaneous ruin did not materialize. He continues his hamartiological curriculum on miaino, or defilement, tracing its use from ceremonial uncleanness to moral corruption, bitterness, and false teaching, before closing with a review of Augustine and the Jews by Paula Fredrickson. A great story is truly timeless. However, since “A Question of Price” is pretty mid at best, we're giving it a little less than 90 minutes. In our newest side quest, we're returning to the world of Witcher comics to discuss Dark Horse's adaptation of the Andrzej Sapkowski short story, determining if this recent graphic novel has anything new to offer besides some pretty art. (In fairness, it's VERY pretty art.) Does the story that introduced The Witcher's Law of Surprise still hold some surprises of its own? Does the return of “Headband Geralt” hit differently after Crossroads of Ravens? And does Calanthe bring that milf energy and thirst for Geralt that she has in other versions of this story? Sharpen your swords and don your doublets, we're returning to Cintra!
It's been a hot minute since the last episode. So let me start by telling you what's been going on, because it actually tees up today's conversation. The short version is, I've been neck deep in getting a very cool new project ready for launch. It's called Liberalism.org and is an online magazine of liberal ideas, which I'm leading in collaboration with my colleagues at the Institute for Humane Studies. Depending on when you're listening to this, it might already have launched, because it's scheduled to go live on March 12th. Regardless, you can get on the mailing list by heading to Liberalism.org.As part of this project, I'm hosting a new bi-weekly podcast called The Liberalism.org Show. It'll be half hour interviews with contributors to the site, which means interviews with some of the most interesting minds in liberalism today. You can look for that wherever you get your podcasts. All of this just swamped me, and I had to take a step back from ReImagining Liberty. I'm glad you stuck around through the hiatus. And to bring us back, I'm actually joined today by one of those colleagues on Liberalism.org, Jason Canon. He's Director of Public Scholarship at the Institute for Humane Studies, and for at least the last year, he and I have been talking non-stop about a shared intellectual project about what it means to think of liberalism as a practice. Or a set of practices. You've heard me discuss versions of this in quite a lot of prior episodes, but today I wanted to bring Jason on for a deep dive, and to establish a foundation for future conversations. We talk about what it means to view something as a practice, how practice theory plugs holes in liberal theorizing, why this approach is largely overlooked by contemporary philosophers of liberalism, and what that oversight means missing out on. I loved this conversation with Jason.Produced by Landry Ayres. Podcast art by Sergio R. M. Duarte. Music by Kevin MacLeod.
American universities stopped optimizing for students a long time ago. The University of Austin was built as a direct counter to that failure. Carlos Carvalho, its president, brings a statistician's precision to the diagnosis, tracing the causal chain from dropped standards to credential collapse while building an institution with no tuition and no government money, staking its survival entirely on student outcomes 20 years out. The conversation moves from the financial architecture of a university, through a curriculum that starts with Plato before it touches Python, to the deeper question of what a university owes a civilization in the age of AI and whether Austin is the right place to answer it.Agenda0:00 Intro + Three Years In 9:42 The $300M Bet 15:42 The Conglomerate Problem 21:42 Western Canon First 28:42 What AI Changes About Teaching 34:42 The Bastrop Lab 41:42 UATX in the Austin Ecosystem 48:42 Atoms vs Bits in Texas 53:42 American Exceptionalism as Mission 59:42 The Hit Pieces 1:06:42 The UCSD Math Collapse 1:11:42 Grade Inflation as Decay 1:14:42 AI and the Soul ProblemGuest BioCarlos Carvalho is the President of the University of Austin. Dive into the long-debated question: Do comic tie-ins for movies and video games actually count as canon, or are they just extra fluff? In this video, we break down how different studios handle continuity, why some tie-ins are treated as essential lore while others are completely ignored, and what this means for fans trying to follow their favorite universes. From retcons and contradictions to marketing-driven publishing, we explore whether these comics truly matter—or if they're just optional side stories with no long-term impact. Psalms 1 & 2 E3 — So far in this short series, we've looked individually at Psalm 1 and Psalm 2. Now we'll look at them side by side. The art of meditating on Scripture involves appreciating every single paragraph, poem, and story, but then also considering what comes before and after, because the biblical authors put everything in this order for a reason! Looking at Psalms 1 and 2 next to each other we find many overlapping words and ideas, so reading both together is crucial for understanding each one individually. In this episode, Jon and Tim explore all the connections, not only between Psalms 1 and 2, but also between these psalms and many other places in the Hebrew Bible. The theology of a slut walk, however, by its outrageous embrace of slutty dress, behavior, and thought, absolutely and definitively rejects any level of moral responsibility for anything. Now lest I be misunderstood at this point — which I understand has happened before! — let me hasten to add that I am not seeking to minimize or excuse violent sexual behavior, or otherwise absolve rapists in any way. In Hour 2 of the Patrick Madrid Show, callers discussed an array of topics. Patrick read from Fr. Mark Clark addressing the validity of marriage according to Canon 1108, and an email from Ephrem asked whether Our Lady of Guadalupe was pregnant a second time. Susan called to ask how to explain to a fallen-away Catholic that we are judged on our own life rather than the life of Jesus. Patrick also addressed whether sins that have been properly repented of will be brought up again by Jesus at the Final Judgement. (01:06) Email – About the validity of marriage. Patrick reads from Fr. Mark Clark to addressing this situation according to Canon 1108. (6:49) Susan - I would like to talk about ways people can give back to their community in more ways than just litter removal which you talked about last week. Break 1 (18:49) Susan - How do you explain to a fallen away Catholic that when we die we are judged on our life not on the life of Jesus? Break 2 (35:51) Patrick - If you repented of your sins does Jesus bring up those sins again? (45:35) Email – Ephrem – Was Our Lady of Guadalupe pregnant a second time?

Why does the Catholic Church have both the Traditional Latin Mass and the modern form of the Mass—and how should you explain the difference without getting pulled into “liturgy wars”? In this episode of Catholic Answers Live, Catholic Answers apologists address this common question before diving into a wide range of topics. They explore whether charging interest is still considered usury, how just war theory applies to rebellions, and how historical cases like the Knights Templar fit with Church law. The episode also explains the role of baptism in justification, offers arguments against naturalism, and gives practical advice for strengthening Catholic marriages. Additional questions include how to understand Peter's denial of Jesus and what it means for salvation. A rich discussion covering liturgy, moral theology, and everyday Catholic life. Questions Covered: 05:32 – I attend the Tridentine Mass Almost exclusively at my ‘local’ FSSP parish. I have a friend seeking the Catholic Church who asked me ‘why do you have two different masses in the Western Rite? Why don’t you just attend the regular English one?’ I often say that I am drawn to the beauty and simplicity of it. How do we respond to this simply without dragging them into the so-called ‘liturgy wars’? How do we respond given the restrictions placed on the older masses? Basically, how do we address this difference to those outside the church? Do I just keep a response about ‘preferences of the faithful’? 11:46 – The Church has been quite vocal against usury over the centuries. Is it still defined as any lending of money at interest? How does this notion square with the idea of a variable money supply? Would things like bank accounts, bonds, cds or stocks still be considered illicit? Has there been any recent guidance from the magisterium? 19:02 – Does just war theory apply to rebellions? Historically, I'm thinking of Irish wars against the British Empire and slave revolts of African-descended peoples in the Americas, including during the U.S. Civil War. What would be the conditions of jus ad bellum in cases like these or any other group dealing with an oppressor? 28:46 – Canon 7 of Chalcedon forbids clergy and monks from war and holding secular office. How then did the Knights Templar, and bishops such as the bishop of Andorra, who also holds title of Co-Prince of Andorra, not violate this? 34:03 – How does baptism fit with “faith alone working through love?” Can someone with “faith alone working through love” be initially justified apart from baptism? 19:44 – What do you think is the most convincing argument/thought exercise against naturalism/empricism (or at least what the average indifferent secular person thinks they believe). 46:29 – What is your best advice for a married Catholic couple to strengthen their bond in marriage? Your stories about you and Renee are always so beautiful (the blue birds especially). Also thanks for being a Catholic cowboy. I grew up Southern Baptist, and seeing a southern Catholic gentleman do apologetics is really cool. 50:51 – Peter denied Jesus 3 times. After the cock crows three times he ran away in shame. What if he falls, hits his head and dies after this? Would his soul be in danger of damnation?

In the biblical worldview, the seed of the woman is justified and the seed of the serpent is not....When you read about some incident, or see some appalling footage on the tube, and you immediately start thinking in terms of approved and justified groups—congratulations, you’ve just been ejected from every sane jury pool. You were applying the categories of one realm to the other one, and the seed of the woman are always called to keep them distinct and separate. In this episode, Douglas Wilson considers artificial intelligence as a modern speaking idol and discusses how to make distinctions between the useful and the demonic. Then he examines the New Testament word metraloas, or murderers of mothers, to underscore the weight and breadth of the fifth commandment in the Christian life. Finally, he reviews Bruce Gordon’s biography of John Calvin’s Institutes, tracing how that monumental work rose, declined, and was recovered across the centuries of church history. This week, we're stealing a couple hours of your time to discuss The Rats: A Witcher Tale, the prequel movie that dropped at the same time as Season 4 and is designed to be watched after it…despite taking place well before. (The Witcher's up to its timeline shenanigans again, it seems.) Paired with the perfectly-themed Master of the Thieves Guild Blended Bourbon by Quest's End Whiskey, we keep things loose, lively and liquidated as we unpack the plots—meaning both the film's narrative and the Rats' plot to steal loads of cash—and try to figure out just what happened to this thing behind the scenes. Also, we come out in favor of bathing with a drunken Dolph Lundgren, debate the role of cephalopods in sex dens and reveal why when it comes to spider women, most movies just like to tease.

Let us begin with the death penalty. Because we refuse to execute the dangerous people who really should be executed, we wind up having to protect the general population by locking them up, and this has drifted into the practice of locking everybody up. This creates a huge apparatus of injustice. For more from Doug, subscribe to Canon+: https://canonplus.com/
