Send us a textJohn Barnhardt, writer/director/producer of OPEN DOOR, the documentary film about Temple Grandin, shares his insights, revelations and experiences as both filmmaker and teacher  in the making of the film. A film festival hit, AN OPEN DOOR is an iconic, inside peek at the mind of Colorado State University professor Temple Grandin, well-known for her exemplary work in understanding how cattle and horses see, hear and feel and influencing livestock industry practices. Her ground-breaking work has heavily influenced the humane treatment of cattle and horses and is considered a hallmark in animal welfare care. Temple, who is autistic, has done extensive efforts both through her voice and work in pushing the envelope of understanding  and acceptance for neuro-divergent people everywhere. John, with the devoted support of executive producer John Festervand, created a film that not only captures the essence of one of the most powerful voices of our time for animal welfare and autism, but is an emotionally inspiring experience to do our very best in all walks of life. The film is touching, real and a beautiful example of one person's willingness to be vulnerable and authentic in the face of a world which once institutionalized the autistic. John, a teacher at CSU, a working cinematographer and founder of Barnfly Productions (https://www.barnflyproductions.com)  shares the credit for the film's success with  his CSU student crew. Their professionalism matches that of other professionals with multiple years of experience, says John. In this insightful interview about a heavily-touted documentary, John shares his own learning experiences with Temple during production. Her 17th book, Visual Thinking - the Hidden Gifts of People Who Think In Pictures, Patterns and Abstractions, is featured throughout the film. This book and Temple's nudges encouraged John to look at his own perceptions about math and education differently. Temple's life was portrayed in the 2010 movie. She was played by Clare Danes. John re-introduces Temple to the world in An Open Door and her vast wealth knowledge at age 78. A clip is featured in this interview. We're just a couple of Beths aspiring to be Jo, hoping to be Amy but happy to end up like Meg, to say nothing of Marmee! This week, we're welcoming in the holiday season with a perfect early 90s cozy up on the couch and cry movie, “Little Women”! Kirsten Dunst nearly steals the show until Clare Danes pulls out all the stops, Winona Ryder earns her Oscar nod and Susan Sarandon finally brings up the topic of "Stepmom" on this podcast. We swoon for Christian Bale's wedge and Mary Wickes' ability to detect a draft, and imagine our own sapphic retelling of the Jo and Friedrich subplot. Broadcaster, John Offord chats to American scientist, activist, author and speaker, Temple Grandin who is well known to many for her trailblazing work as a spokesperson for people with autism and her lifelong work with animal behaviour. Temple was named in the 2010 Time 100, an annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world in the "Heroes" category. Grandin has written six previous books on autism and was also the subject of the Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning semi-biographical film Temple Grandin, staring Clare Danes. Today, we are seeing a new generation of autistic activists, who can take awareness as a given (because of Grandin) and focus instead on the social, political and economic barriers to our full integration and acceptance by society," said Ari Ne'eman, president and co-founder of the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, which represents autistic adults. This episode is about the unexpected strengths of autism. My guest, Dr. Temple Grandin (www.templegrandin.com), has written many best-selling books on autism and her life, one of which was made into a film starring Clare Danes as Temple. The film was described by the New York Times as “The best biopic in a very, very long time.” Temple has received multiple major awards and recognitions including Time Magazine's 2010 annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world. Often misunderstood, autism is, broadly, a Neurodevelopmental phenomenon that affects the way people experience the world. It affects every aspect of a person's development, but processes, behaviors and sensory functioning. Our understanding of autism has improved, and research has revealed underlying strengths of autism. One of the insights I have gleaned from this interview and my preparation for it is that having an autistic person on a team can be a huge advantage. They often notice things that neurotypical people miss. Note, there would be no Star Trek without Spock. Yet, in spite of these advances in research and advantages of autistic people, many of them are not receiving the services and understanding that they need.

‘I’m sorry but Angela would want to f*ck right off’ This week on Up To 90, we talk Angela Chase and the seminal coming of age ‘ My So-Called Life ’ Appearing on TV screens a few months after the suicide of Kurt Cobain; the show went head to head for its first and only series with the heavy hitter ‘Friends’, before causing ripples of shock when it was cancelled after 19 episodes. Many posit the reason for its lack of network support with the gritty reality it portrayed, controversy abounded at its exploration of drugs, alcohol and teenage sexuality. But the series made an indelible mark in many a teenage soul and of course gave the world the one and only Jared Leto-lazy eyelids and all. The protagonist Angela Chase (played by Clare Danes) became synonymous with teenage angst and her comrades Ricki Vasquez and Riyan let her glimpse through the keyhole at a world much more complicated than her own; but it was the central storyline which explored her obsession with Jordan Catalano (Jared Leto) which really captured our attention. The ‘will they/won’t they’ plot had us on the edge of our beanbags up until the open-ended finale which left My So-Called Life hardcore fans begging for more. Was Angela a wreck the head? Did Emma really get a Gemini tattoo? Was it okay to wish to be adopted by your teacher? Why is Julie ruining a nineties dance anthem with her emotions? Also, Emma gives us a ‘how to’ American dream demo, Julie talks oil painting and top sandwich tips, Emma preaches her love for toxic substances and Julie talks her long running neurosis. In other words it’s just a regular Tuesday at Up To 90. If you ever shifted Jared Leto please get in touch at Twitter or Instagram @upto90podcast. Don’t forget to review us on iTunes and we will love you forever and ever me never.

Host: Indre Viskontas According to the USDA, Americans produce and consume more beef, veal, and chicken than any other nation in the world. As a result, the status of animal welfare in the meat production industry should be of some concern to all Americans, regardless of dietary habits. One of the world's leading experts in livestock handling practices is Dr. Temple Grandin, professor of animal science at Colorado State University. In addition to gaining international recognition for her research on animal behavior and designs of feed yards and slaughterhouses, Dr. Grandin is also arguably the most famous high-functioning autistic adult. Her story has inspired countless individuals and families who have been touched by autism spectrum disorders, as well as other conditions that cause sensory hypersensitivity. In 2010, Clare Danes won both Emmy and Golden Globe awards for her portrayal of Temple in the critically-acclaimed HBO biopic Temple Grandin. This week on Point of Inquiry, we talk to Grandin about science, animal behavior, autism, ethics, and much more. Temple Grandin teaches courses on livestock behavior and facility design at Colorado State University and consults with the livestock industry on facility design, livestock handling, and animal welfare. She has appeared on television shows such as 20/20, 48 Hours, CNN Larry King Live, PrimeTime Live, the Today Show, and many shows in other countries. She has been featured in People Magazine, the New York Times, Forbes, U.S. News and World Report, Time Magazine, the New York Times book review, and Discover magazine. In 2010, Time Magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people. She has also authored over 400 articles in both scientific journals and livestock periodicals on animal handling, welfare, and facility design. She is the author of Thinking in Pictures, Livestock Handling and Transport, Genetics and the Behavior of Domestic Animals, and Humane Livestock Handling. Her books Animals in Translation and Animals Make Us Human were both on the New York Times best seller list.

Ms. Grandin is the most accomplished and well-known adult with autism in the world. An expert on animal behavior, she has designed humane handling systems for half the cattle-processing facilities in the US and consults with the meat industry to develop animal welfare guidelines. She is an Associate Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University, a prominent author and speaker and was recently named as one of the 25 "Heroes" in this years' Time 100 annual list of the world's most influential people. Her books about her interior life as an autistic person have increased the world's understanding of the condition with personal immediacy – and with import, as rates of autism diagnosis rise. An HBO movie was recently made about her life starring actress Clare Danes. She is revered by animal rights groups and members of the autistic community, perhaps because in both regards she is a voice for those who are sometimes challenged to make themselves heard.

Next, Doug tells us if the midlife crisis comedy of the year, Wild Hogs, was really as horrible as it looked. Finally, I take a look at Disturbia, starring one of our favorite young actors, Shia Labeouf.Remember, please give us any feedback you'd like at thosemovieguys@gmail.com.
