Episode Description Welcome to another episode of the Veterinary Business Success Show. In this episode, Brendan Howard interviews Dr. Ryan Englar, a board-certified canine and feline practitioner and Executive Director of Clinical and Professional Skills at the University of Arizona's veterinary school, about the importance of communication in veterinary medicine.Dr. Englar stresses the importance of not only having medical knowledge but also being able to effectively communicate it to clients. She explains that the Calgary Cambridge guide offers over 70 communication skills, but it's not necessary to apply all of them to every conversation. Instead, she encourages students to identify which skills resonate with them and feel natural to their authentic voice. Dr Englar also discusses the shift from medical paternalism, where doctors were seen as the expert in charge, to a more collaborative approach with clients. This approach involves relationship-centred care, where the veterinarian works with the client to make shared decisions that are best for the patient, client, and doctor.Further, Brendan Howard asks about the challenge of the tripartite relationship in veterinary medicine, where the veterinarian is responsible for the animal's health but the client makes the decisions. Dr Englar acknowledges that this is a huge challenge, even for newer veterinarians, and that it's important to understand the client's perspective and find a plan that works for both the pet and the client.Dr Englar also talks about the importance of communication in practice ownership and middle management. She believes that communication is lacking in many practices, and there needs to be more dialogue between employees and management. She encourages practice owners to reflect on what's working and what isn't, and to have sit-downs with employees to discuss their concerns. In conclusion, Dr. Engler's insights on communication in veterinary medicine are invaluable. As she says, "Communication is the foundation of everything we do." So, if you want to improve your communication skills and become a better veterinarian, be sure to listen to this episode of the Veterinary Business Success Show.Episode Outline [00:00] Episode Intro [02:29] Dr. Englar explains the Calgary Cambridge Guide[04:38] Simplifying communication and building efficiency in the consultation process[07:31] Shift from Medical Paternalism[13:28] Communication challenges between Doctor and Client[18:15] Ad Break- Learn more about our Leaders program [20:20] Communication Training for Veterinary Students [25:23] Creating a safe environment for communication at the workplace[29:12] Challenges Faced by Veterinary Graduates [33:50] Episode wrap-up[34:35] The end

In today's episode with catch with with Ph.D alum Dr. Melissa Shubert Smith, a professor of communications and the Gibbons Chair of Journalism at the Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, MS. Dr. Smith wears many hats at her university but still finds time to devote much attention to publishing books, including her latest book, Third Parties, Outsiders, and Renegades: Modern Challenges to the Two-Party System in Presidential Elections (https://www.amazon.com/Third-Parties-Outsiders-Renegades-Communication/dp/1793620725). Much of her work has focused on outsider candidates and the influence they can have on shaping the agendas and narratives for those who follow. In addition to the tremendous research she has done, she teaches anywhere from four to six classes a semester (that is a lot for those of us in academia) plus finds time to train for and run half marathons. She ran her first half marathon in 2013 and used it as an opportunity to raise money for schools damaged by the EF4 tornado that devastated the Tuscaloosa area in 2011. We had so much fun in this conversation and you don't want to miss it. In tonight's episode, Priscilla gives her opinions on ways to tell you're falling apart in your relationship. A lot of couples are unaware of the dangerous signs their relationship is falling apart. So many couples are tangled up in other things to even notice their relationship is on the brink of ruin.
In this episode we are discussing setting boundries and being consistent. It is important in our personal relationships to do these two things and try to improve on them. Setting boundaries and being consistent allow us to continue to evolve and grow.
Being human in your approach to marketing is important. People don't want to feel like they're being marketed to and they don't want to feel like they're just another marketing metric. When we humanise our marketing, people respond to it, people engage with it and people remember it. But what does human marketing look like? It's all well and good us singing the praises of being more human in our approach to marketing - but what's the framework, how is it different from the norm? In this episode, Rich and Joe are going to talk through their early thoughts on what should make up a human marketing framework. Sort of. - Be ‘real' in your marketing - Don't try to be something your not - Wear your values on your sleeve - Speed - it's about ‘now' - Communciation should represent the channel - Communication should be two way - Don't focus on the outcome
Black Lives Matter. Say Her Name. Defend DACA. Love is Love. How can science help us understand these calls for social justice, and what does it tell us about the movements behind the hashtags? This week, sociologist and Science Slam champion Alice MillerMacPhee talks with Jocelyn and Bradley about her research on the dynamics of social movements, sharing insights into this unique moment in the Movement for Black Lives, immigrant rights movement, and LGBTQ+ rights movement, among others. Alice helps us understand what systemic racism means and how it works, as well as how intersecting inequalities marginalize some identities and experiences more than others. The friends also discuss the sometimes-contested status of the social sciences within the scientific community, and the value of social science research to illuminate the process of science itself. Finally, Alice reflects on how her scholarship and her activism draw inspiration from one another, as she and her merry band of “unruly sociologists” aim to put their knowledge into action. Too many times employees stay in a toxic work environment because the employer has brainwashed them into thinking that they should be lucky to be getting paid. NEVER! You should never stay in any work environment that is toxic where employees feel that they can treat you any way they want because they pay the employee. I urge you to reevaluate your work environment; especially while you are working from home because of the Coronavirus, and look to leave if your environment is toxic.

You are the conductor of the orchestra." David G. Rohlander is a professional speaker, mentor and executive coach. His passion is working with executives to build their own masterpiece personally and professionally. Flying 208 combat missions as a USAF fighter pilot gave him an appreciation for living with gusto. Then he earned an MBA in finance from California State University and spent nearly a decade with Merrill Lynch. Next he became an entrepreneur, built three companies and developed commercial and residential real estate. Along the way he taught at several universities. Rohlander has coached partners for Ernst & Young, trained sales teams with Honeywell, and mentored hundreds of CEOs and executives in a wide range of industries. In addition to earning his MBA in finance, Rohlander studied management with Peter Drucker at Claremont Graduate University.
