Ian Wilks was a high-ranking leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is a former bishop, a former branch president, and a member of the stake presidency in British Columbia, with responsibility for shepherding twelve congregations and thousands of members. Then-apostle Dallin H. Oaks, now the 18th president and living prophet of the LDS Church, personally recruited him, interviewed him, called him, set him apart, and trained him into that role.¹ For 37 years, Ian devoted his entire life to his church. He paid tithing on his gross income. He sealed his marriage in the London Temple. He conducted hundreds of worthiness interviews. He trained bishops. He stood at pulpits and at altars. He made sacred covenants in the temple to give all he had, including his own life if required, for the building up of the kingdom on earth. In a snowstorm, the cost of those 37 years lands all at once. The thing he wanted most to be true, he learned was untrue. I spoke with Ian on my podcast Cults, Culture & Coercion and in a recent livestream. He is the co-host of the Inside Out podcast with Jim Bennett, son of the late US Senator Bob Bennett. What he told me confirms what former members of the LDS Church have been describing to me since my first book was published in 1988. The Mormon Church meets every criterion of an authoritarian cult under my BITE Model of Authoritarian Control™ and sits on the destructive end of my Influence Continuum©. Ian himself took the BITE Model self-test based on his decades of experience and scored the church at roughly 85 to 90 percent across the four dimensions of behavior, information, thought, and emotion. In this episode, we meet Genesis, a 31-year-old former Jehovah's Witness who shares her journey from a high-control upbringing to finding authentic peace. Born into the organization after her grandmother was recruited during a time of extreme grief in 1960s Cuba, Genesis describes a childhood dominated by "fear and anxiety" regarding the impending apocalypse. She details the devastating impact of the organization's shunning policy, which saw her 16-year-old brother cast out and his parents told to "pretend he died," leaving Genesis as the "replacement child" under intensified surveillance and bizarre modesty rules involving everything from sandals to jean shorts in swimming pools. Genesis also opens up about her early marriage to a "JW dream man"—a relationship born more out of a desire for escape than true compatibility—and the subsequent institutional betrayal she faced when he cheated. From being pressured by elders to "forgive and forget" his infidelity to the "miraculous" relief she felt upon walking away during the COVID-19 pandemic, her story is a masterclass in reclaiming agency. Today, she deconstructs the toxic narrative that success outside the cult is merely a "blessing from Satan," proving instead that true happiness comes from the hard work of self-care and autonomy. A little bit about Cheryl if you missed their last episode or need a recap, as well as what you can expect to hear about in today's episode: Born in Toronto and raised in what appeared to be an ordinary middle-class family, Cheryl endured horrors few can fathom: intergenerational organized cult torture involving ritual abuse, mind control, trafficking, incest, and calculated programming designed to shatter body, mind, and soul. From birth—likely even in utero—the cults (interconnected KKK, Nazi, satanic, and Christian factions stretching back generations) subjected them to extreme torture, sexual violence, and psychological warfare in everyday places like church basements, forests, warehouses, and private homes. Yet even as a child, Cheryl found cracks in the darkness. Writing and art became their first lifelines, silent workarounds that allowed truth to slip past threats and programming. In their early teens, parts of their system began sharing memories, starting with incest. A school story written by one part reached a believing teacher, prompting police and child protective services involvement—a fragile first step toward light. But safety was not immediate. Cult-involved parents deployed a sabotaging therapist, and torture intensified. But Cheryl's system refused silence. At 15, they chose their own therapist—an extraordinary cult torture survivor with DID—who instantly recognized the switching and offered profound validation. Cheryl lives with polyfragmented DID: thousands of fragments forming complex hubs, subgroups, and inner worlds, some self-created for protection, others deliberately crafted by the cult. Escape was not one dramatic moment but a marathon of courage—layer by layer, memory by memory, through inner cooperation, unraveling programming, and building co-consciousness. It took most of their life, but they reached safety, proving freedom is possible no matter how long the road.Through it all, writing and art served as a sanctuary and superpower. Cheryl began pouring pain onto pages as soon as they could hold a pencil. In their late 20s and early 30s, they became the author they needed as a struggling teen—the one they couldn't find. Blades in the Dark is a game about daring criminals pulling off impossible heists. Our crew immediately used fire to escape the box we voluntarily hid in, assaulted two undercover cops, locked them inside our escape crate, stole accounting records, accidentally got high during evidence collection, and somehow convinced ourselves this was still a stealth mission. Honestly, I think the cult is thriving. Show Notes Part 3 finally dropped us into our first real score and the sewer cult wasted absolutely no time proving they were both competent and deeply concerning. Tasked with infiltrating an illegal leviathan blood refinery hidden beneath an apothecary, we chose the most sensible plan imaginable: smuggle ourselves inside in a supply crate. Naturally this immediately turned into an emergency fire escape situation because Talon solved confinement with alchemy and arson. Once inside, things somehow became more chaotic. We discovered the "guards" were actually Bluecoats running security for the operation, meaning our weird little cult had accidentally punched local law enforcement in the face before the score even properly started. Rather than murder them and summon ghost problems, we tied them up, stuffed them back into the crate, and continued the mission like this was all part of the plan. It absolutely was not. The score also gave us a chance to see Blades in the Dark really shine mechanically. Flashbacks let us retroactively prepare, clocks tracked rising danger, and the system constantly pushed us forward instead of letting us stall in planning mode. Every success created new problems and every problem somehow made the story better. Meanwhile Talon uncovered suspicious ledgers pointing to illicit operations while Roper discovered the drugs in the least scientific way possible by accidentally inhaling them and immediately becoming evidence. It was a perfect demonstration of why this game works so well. The mechanics encourage momentum, but the players create the disasters. By the end we had stolen evidence, infiltrated the operation, mildly traumatized two cops, and learned an important lesson. Never let the ghost guy do quality control on contraband.
