A state of play exists for all of us, if we'll give ourselves the chance to embrace it and enjoy its rejuvinating effects. When I met Hawaii based author, Steve Rix, I knew he had access to something I hadn't felt in a long time. What was it? What was he smiling from ear to ear at virtually every thing I said? Was he merely a master salesman? Was I being taken for a ride? The answer is a clear no and this conversation, however random at times, proves that Steve believes in his concepts and a life time of play, at all costs. Play is the ground breaking experience and it's right in front of us, waiting for us to take the reigns. To overcome, once and for all, that which holds our faces to the floor. This is my conversation with a clever and lovely man, author Steve Rix, and this is a reminder that play means so much more than we give it credit for. I met Dean Van Dyke a few years back when I was reconnecting with a lot of Seattle area business leaders after spending some time overseas. A number of my friends had moved away while I was away and well... since I am definitely THAT GUY who needs to feel loved, I sought out new relationships at a few networking events. A friend of a friend knew Dean and had recommended we meet and get to know each other. After that initial meeting, I felt a special kinship with Dean and we immediately forged what I believe will be a life long friendship.Along the way, Dean has served me in ways I hadn't expected nor asked for, but he has always been there. As the saying goes "if you want to be better, serve others, and better follows" or... something like that. It's my hope that you enjoy our frank and intimate conversation on the show today and I believe you'll see why Dean is someone you would want to know and probably honestly really need in your life.Check out this great chat with my buddy, the man who empowers and leads by selfless example...Dean Van Dyke, on the Rockstar Radicals Podcast.Time Codes:7:00 Growing up in the Baptist church11:00 Getting three choices in the military16:00 Preparing to deploy in Gitmo21:20 Microsoft vs Gateway26:00 Wanting to be loved32:00 The depression and the dustbowl36:40 Living in scarcity41:45 We don't see ourselves in 3 dimensions47:00 The checkup from the neck up51:40 The deaths of brothers57:30 Touched by suicide1:02:40 We lost their battle1:07:00 Presenting the flag and pin at gravesite1:12:00 Crying is okay1:18:00 Thinking less of yourself and more of others1:23:40 Don't be afraid to succeedSubscribe to the shows here:1) Rockstar Superhero:Itunes: https://apple.co/3u8wlI9Audible: https://adbl.co/3sCnfSkSpotify: https://spoti.fi/3qxjQDLGoogle: https://bit.ly/3kC66WaTumblr: https://bit.ly/3ttKmzfDeezer: https://bit.ly/2Zr5lW7JioSaavn: https://bit.ly/3k29jhvCastbox: https://bit.ly/3bunV6UiHeartRadio: https://ihr.fm/2PKvm172) Rockstar Radicals:Itunes: https://apple.co/2OR4kVx Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3qHHFZHDeezer: https://bit.ly/3srQ3grPodchaser: https://bit.ly/2NG2UwLGoogle: https://bit.ly/3uIQVzkJioSaavn: https://bit.ly/387Y2HGCastbox: https://bit.ly/3t0yCUliHeartRadio: https://ihr.fm/3vbWKFuBlog @ Tumblr: https://bit.ly/3cQqRKwWanna be on the show? I met Rodney Shurelds in a tough season in my life. That season had a complex emotional bent for reasons you'll discover on this podcast.Rodney was the normal American male. Living in central Texas with his family, Rodney received a terrifying medical diagnosis that didn't just change his life, but many around him. In the following year, Rodney stepped closer to death and lost so much of what made him typically human. As time went by, things seemed to accelerate, and Rodney was placed on a donor receipt list just in case a miracle happened. In January of 2020, a miracle did indeed happen. The problem is another family had to lose a loved one for Rodney to live. ....and this is where our story begins. What I find immensely hilarious and interesting is our conversation was supposed to be about his musical career and his pursuits as a performer and songwriter, but once we got going, I found that what Matt had to say about life and our immediate impact into those we love stood out as far more important and immediate. RSR #11 - Wine Paired with Charity Is Anything but Cheap with Martin Barrett

Play Episode Listen Later May 14, 2017 95:34

I was honored to meet Martin years ago at a private event for a well known international author and newspaper columnist.  At that meeting, I was able to partake of his great wines, only then discovering that his company, SOZO Wines, does something remarkable.  SOZO donates a significant portion of its profits to help those that cannot help themselves.  Whether we are talking about homelessness, sex trafficking or the like, SOZO is there little by little to make its mark.  In fact, if you buy his wines, you can pick where you want your non-profit dollars to go.  That said, this is no cheap wine, so don't be fooled.  This is the real McCoy and I found his story reflects my own ambitions regarding business and the development of something "important." Even if you aren't fascinated with wine, or couldn't care less about homelessness, I believe you will love this conversation...in fact, I guarantee it. Be willing to learn something today and see how you can impact your own little corner of the world. 1:30 Gnomes. This week's podcast features Sean Flaharty, the director of Eyes of Freedom: The Lima Company Memorial.  Sean's story isn't unique, but it is profound.  His life took a dramatic and unexpected turn in 2005, when his friend from childhood died in the deserts of Iraq, along with 22 other men. Sean was determined to enlist and join his brothers in arms overseas, but fate dealt a different hand.  Sean would take the "story" of those lost in battle overseas to the masses.  Having seen the Lima Memorial in Seattle in 2014, I can attest to it's profound nature and power. It's an amazing experience to behold and all should witness its impact.  Sean shares other tidbits of life experienced and almost lost amongst potentially poor decisions.  All I know is I'm thrilled he had time for me to spend 2 hours of tangential bliss.  Be warned.... we talk about Black Lives matter as well.  I am not shy about my thoughts, but I love people. This week's podcast is about my father, the late Robert L Jones Sr. who departed this mortal coil at 7pm on August 2nd, 2016.   This podcast discusses his early years, the struggles with family, his older sister dying, his marriage, his years moving and working in towns with funny names, like Chehalis, Wenatchee, Tonasket, Yakima, and Olympia.  We visited Lake Chelan.  We almost died boating.  We almost died moving.  We almost died in a head on car accident outside of Yelm, Wa.  Basically, we almost died a lot. I also discuss his last 25 years living in Ocean Shores, Wa with my mother, and the toll life took on him. Lastly, it wasn't lost on me that the very thing my dad had always looked for to fill the hole in his life was always right in front of him.  He figured that out, and I couldn't be happier about that. I will miss him like no other, and I hope you enjoy this insight into the man that made me what I am.  I apologize for the salty dialogue in advance, and I truly thank you for listening to this memorial by yours truly.   I love you, Dad.  Thank you for making me, me. You are the definition of a Superhero. Play Episode Listen Later Jul 20, 2016 98:33

This week's podcast features my friend, Kevin Lynch, the founding CEO of the Quell Foundation in Falmouth, MA. Kevin is a purposeful man, committed to finding a way to remove the mask from the stigma of mental illness.  His own personal dealings with mental illness drove Kevin to start the foundation and it's clear this is his calling.  In only 6 months of building the brand and non-profit, Kevin was a featured speaker at the White House. It's my hope his story will inspire and challenge you. In addition, it may be valuable simply to better understand how mental illness may be affecting the fringes of your life.  If it's true that 1 in 4 people are diagnosed with mental illness (and improper diagnosis notwithstanding), we know a lot of people who struggle with the disease. 1:25 USS Andrew Jackson SSBN 619.
