Ryan Bridge: Why ComCom's not investigating Air New Zealand

Early Edition with Kate Hawkesby

So, after all the handwringing, the complaints, the stomping of feet, the Commerce Commission's shooting down talk of an investigation into domestic airfares. Greg Foran and Co. will see this as vindication - validation that, despite the headlines and Consumer NZ's claim the market is quote broken, the reality is their costs have gone up and, surprise surprise, it's expensive to run routes with high fixed costs to small places with few people. So they conclude doing a market study —which is easy politics, it scratches the itch— won't actually achieve anything. And they say it won't lead to consumers getting a better deal. Refreshing honesty. Could the same refreshing honesty not have been applied to the claims about banking/supermarkets/petrol stations, etc, etc, etc? Like most things post-Covid, costs have gone sky high. Airport landing charges - up. Air traffic control - up. Security levies - up. And when you're a business, one owning to the tune of 51% remember, you recoup those costs by putting your own prices up. We don't want them subsidies flights and crashing our business, right? We sold off the national carrier in 1989. We re-nationalised it in 2001after Ansett went bust - that cost us close to a billion bucks. Ansett's problem was high costs and regulation changes - when airlines fail, it gets expensive for taxpayers. Now I don't want to defend an airline charging me $400 to fly for 40 minutes anymore than the next guy. But this is the crux of most of the complaints we hear about through the media. Short flights, regional flights are expensive right now and people don't use them often enough. They use more fuel as a proportion of total flight time because take-off and climbing is when you burn through it - it takes a bit of gas to lift us into the sky. The cost of fuel is a third of operating cost —something Foran can't control— that's more the purview of a Putin or a Sultan. Planes spend way too long sitting on the ground, your costs are higher, and you've got fewer passengers to spread those costs over. Using jets would be more efficient but, again, we don't have the people to fill them. Which is why I said the other day —and it's true but doesn't make it palatable— we're a small country, we pay a price for sparsely populated, beautiful and untouched landscapes. The ComCom does say there's room for improvement, but on the whole, the real enemy here is the politician or talking head who tells us by simply bashing Air New Zealand's head into a wall, they can make Kiwis fly on the cheap.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Kerre Woodham: Why would the Government interfere in the aviation market?

Kerre McIvor Mornings Podcast

We know airfares are expensive, right? Everybody, and I mean everybody, I know who's booked flights recently has made the comment that an overseas flight is cheaper than flying just about anywhere around New Zealand – especially to the provincial centres. Easter was huge in terms of airfares, but even on your normal everyday Wednesday morning, flying to Timaru, flying to Tauranga, it's going to set you back a fortune. We've been complaining about Air New Zealand's pricing now ever since we could get back in the air again after Covid, but what can we do? Air New Zealand says its experienced more cost inflation in the past three years than was typically seen in a decade, with Covid, a weak New Zealand dollar, and geopolitics all to blame. Richard Thompson, Air New Zealand's Chief Financial Officer says their costs over the past 3.5 years have gone up by roughly 30%. Domestic airfares on average have gone up by around 24%, so they're trying to absorb the costs, they say. He argues that flying is still a relatively affordable way to get around the country, with every $400 or $500 fare, he says, there are thousands of examples of $129 fares or even $99 fares. He said I was speaking with someone before Christmas who wanted to get from Timaru to Napier. They were paying $600 or $700 one way. But what's the alternative? You drive to Picton. It'll cost you $100 in gas. If you take the ferry across, that's another $250 or $300. Then another $50 or $60 in gas to get to Napier. He said driving isn't cheap either. But now the government's getting in on the act. Associate Transport Minister James Meager is not ruling out underwriting the expansion of small regional airlines to help maintain routes and keep the price of flying competitive. But truly, the thing is we simply do not have the population base to support viable competition. How many airlines have tried and failed to establish themselves in the market? Just thinking back, in the last couple of decades, Freedom Air, Kiwi Air, and Ansett - they came, they tried, they failed. Don't get me wrong, competition is a good thing. We do have Jetstar, bless them and where they fly, you'll generally find the routes are the most competitive in terms of airfares, and the most reliable – because let's not forget about reliability. And I don't think that's a coincidence. I'm supposed to be flying to Tauranga in a couple of weeks for the day, for a job. And I'm supposed to be flying down on Saturday morning and flying back on Saturday evening. I have absolutely no confidence that that will happen. None. I mean, I hope it does, because there's a film crew down there and it will be a costly exercise if I fail to make it. I'm not planning anything for that particular Saturday night because the last time I flew to Tauranga, I got down there fine and then sat for just under 7 hours in the regional lounge waiting for a plane that never came, or it didn't come for a very, very long time. And yes, you can drive, but it's a horrible drive. But what do you do? It's a horrible drive or you accept that there's a very real chance that the plane won't take off when it says it's going to. Why, though, is the government interfering in the market? I found it really interesting that successive governments, Labour and National have wanted to tinker with privately owned businesses like supermarkets, and petrol companies, and banks, and now the airlines. They want to sort of tweak and fiddle around to try and bring prices down and make things more competitive, and it's all about the consumer and you know. Fabulous. Why don't they bring down the price of power? That's something they do control. The governments are in charge of that. Not everybody flies, we all use electricity. It is what it is. It's expensive to run an airline. Really expensive now in the wake of Covid and it's all been outlined as to why it's so expensive. Flying is expensive. We know that. We baulk at paying the prices if we can. They will allow some subsidies if you're going for a funeral, if there's humanitarian reasons for getting somewhere quickly. Air New Zealand can allow for cheaper airfares, but ultimately, do we want the government, that is the taxpayer, subsidising competition in the aviation industry? I wouldn't have thought that was a good use of taxpayer money. Why on Earth should other taxpayers who don't fly, subsidise those who want to flit off to Hawkes Bay or Queenstown for a jolly. I just don't see why the government should be interfering with the business of flying planes. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Bob Ansett is a renowned Australian entrepreneur, best known as the founder of Budget Rent a Car in Australia. Born in 1933, Bob grew up in a family deeply connected to business and innovation. He took Budget from a small operation in 1965 to a nationwide success, revolutionising the car rental industry in Australia through exceptional customer service and innovative marketing. His leadership and commitment to customer satisfaction made Budget a household name before he eventually stepped away from the company in the late 1980s. Bob is the son of the legendary Australian aviation pioneer Sir Reginald Ansett, the founder of Ansett Airlines. Reginald built one of Australia's most iconic airline companies, which operated for over 65 years before ceasing operations in 2001. His entrepreneurial spirit and determination were key influences in Bob's career, shaping his approach to business and leadership. Despite their shared passion for innovation, Bob carved out his own path, distinguishing himself in the car rental industry rather than following directly in his father's footsteps. Beyond his business achievements, Bob Ansett has been an influential figure in Australian corporate culture, advocating for strong customer service, ethical business practices, and employee empowerment. He has authored books on business and leadership and continues to inspire entrepreneurs with his insights on resilience and adaptation. But with its regional Saab 340B flights still running, and the federal government signalling it doesn't want to see Rex fail, there's still plenty of hope that the airline won't completely go the way of Bonza – or, for that matter, its predecessor Ansett. Adam and Jake discuss what went wrong at Rex, the possible paths forward, and whether something needs to be done about the dominance of the Qantas-Virgin duopoly. Given we can all benefit from fresh ideas, I chose to kick off my 2022 podcast year with Donna McGeorge. This is someone super passionate about enhancing the large amount of time we spend in our workplace or home offices (too much, for many) to ensure it is effective and productive, as well as enjoyable. Donna has worked with managers and leaders throughout Australia and Asia–Pacific for over 20 years. She delivers practical skills, training, workshops, and facilitation to corporates such as Jetstar, Medibank Private, and Ford Motor Company so they learn to manage their people well and produce great performance and results. Her CV reads like her eclectic record collection (yes, classic vinyl): Manager of Theatre, Sports & Concert Tours for the UK-based Keith Prowse; Asia–Pacific Organisational Development Manager for Ford Motor Company in Shanghai, China; as well as roles at Telstra, Qantas, Ernst & Young and former airline Ansett. She lives on the Gold Coast, Queensland, a region known for its world-class beaches, but her most creative moments come while sipping tea on her balcony, gazing at the meandering waterways, alongside her husband, Steve, and dog, Prudence. Known as THE productivity coach, she has a range of books, products, and services to help you improve the way we live and work every day and I need some of her magic as much as anyone. Listen to this podcast to learn: How important is routine and what are your top 3 ways you advise people to form one that works for us as not everyone is a “morning person”? Brainpower is something we all love to harness. How can we rewrite our brain to be more energized and therefore productive? Does our stage of life or age impact that so we need to readjust this over time? Why is being intentional so important in improving our capacity to do more and do things better too? Lockdown has helped us all refocus on what we NEED to do more because we became used to not scheduling so much into a day. Explain how you organize your week to be able to ‘win more'. Take away: What is your final takeaway message for us on The Politics of Capacity?   To find out more about Donna: W:: https://donnamcgeorge.com/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/donnamcgeorge/

Women have been flying since the early days of aviation but, with a few notable exceptions, they have rarely been visible or well known. Kathy Mexted shares the feats of trailblazers like Nancy Bird Walton, Deborah Wardley, who was told by Ansett that women couldn’t be pilots, and Gaby Kennard, the first Australian woman to fly solo around the world. Others are less known but their stories are just as extraordinary – pilots involved with the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Britain’s Air Transport Auxiliary, the RAAF, aerial agriculture or long-range ferrying. Kathy Mexted is a writer, photographer and editor of Airsport magazine. Dog Day Afternoon. Nor is it about the Attica prison riots. It's about sciatica. You know numbness and pain in the lower back and legs. It's the result of pressure on the sciatic nerve. Jean [00:01:23] Oh so it's not. It has nothing to do with Al Pacino or the Al Pacino movie.   Lita [00:01:27] No no no. Jean [00:01:28] Then I'm out. Ron [00:01:30] What was that all about? Lita [00:01:33] Nothing Ron. Don't worry about it Jean. You know Jean. Excuse me Ron Why don't you introduce today's guest. Ron [00:01:40] Certainly on today's show we are interviewing Mary W.. She's an octogenarian a cookie baker. And yes she is an Al Pacino fan. Jean [00:01:50] Awesome. Lita [00:01:51] Yes. Hello and thank you for joining our show. And for the sake of our audience let me also introduce Mary as my Aunt may I call you Auntie? Mary [00:02:01] Thank you for having me. Yes you may call me Auntie. Jean [00:02:06] And Mary is also my great aunt. So I will be referring her to her as Auntie as well hello Auntie.. Isn't this exciting. You are on the air. Mary [00:02:16] Never thought I would be on the air. Will my star be added to the Walk of Fame. Lita [00:02:22] And I'm not sure about the Walk of Fame. But you're always a star in our book. Jean [00:02:26] Absolutely. Ron [00:02:27] Since everyone else here is calling you auntie. Do you mind if I call you auntie as well. Mary [00:02:32] That's fine.   Ron [00:02:33] OK. Auntie.. Please tell us a little bit about your problem when it first started. If you can remember. Mary [00:02:40] I don't know exactly but in the family vacation in North Carolina about five six years ago I noticed my upper leg was tingling and I thought I had blockage like the blood wasn't flowing through. Lita [00:02:52] Well that must have been scary. Mary [00:02:54] Yes I was very nervous. I thought it might be something serious. I never had that before so I didn't know what it was. Jean [00:03:02] Were there any other symptoms at that time. Mary [00:03:04] No. But when I was standing for long periods of time it would affect me more. Ron [00:03:09] Well what did you do about it at the time. Mary [00:03:12] Nothing. I sat alot I just tried to rest since I was away from home I knew I would have to be checked when I got back to Chicago. Jean [00:03:20] So when you got home you saw your doctor. Mary [00:03:23] I did end up going to the chiropractor Lita probably suggested that since I have been there before. Lita [00:03:29] I vaguely remember that it certainly sounds like something I would do. Jean [00:03:34] Did the chiropractor help at all. Mary [00:03:36] No not really. They told me to do my exercises and I didn't have to go back. I did one exercise for a while and it didn't seem to help. So I just stopped.   Ron [00:03:48] So it just continued to bother you. Mary [00:03:52] Yes the pain wasn't bad. It was really just annoying numbness. But not really excruciating pain. So I dealt with it. Lita [00:04:01] Well I could understand that I guess if it's just annoying and it's not really painful then you just deal with it.  Now that was a long time ago, five or six years can you bring us up to speed on what's going on now. Mary [00:04:13] Within the past six months or so my symptoms changed and now on top of the numbness the right leg I have pain on the lower back and hips I end up going to my GP who ordered x rays on my hips and I was worried that I might need hip surgery. The pain has been pretty bad even keeping me from parties and socializing. It hurts to sit or stand so I end up spending a lot of time on the couch with a heating pad. Jean [00:04:40] I'm so sorry to hear that. What did the X-rays show when you had those X-rays done. Mary [00:04:45] My doctor called me and she said that the hips were fine. It was just that I had sciatica. Ron [00:04:51] Well I bet that was a relief to you. Mary [00:04:53] Yeah she saw me do it. I should get on my back and do some exercises and then I told her. Are you going to come over to help me up. Staff:  Laughter Lita [00:05:02] Well yeah I think I recommended that you do the exercises in bed. Mary [00:05:06] That is what I have been doing. It has been helping. Ron [00:05:10] Well what kind of exercises are these that you're doing in bed. Jean [00:05:13] I don't think she's gonna be showing you what she does in bed Ron.   Lita [00:05:16] Oh. hhooohooo hoo (as laughter) Jean [00:05:17] Sorry. Ron [00:05:18] (Laughing) Mary [00:05:19] Several stretching moves. I have pictures. Lita [00:05:22] Well I'm gonna post those pictures. of those exercizes Jean [00:05:23] oh boy Ron [00:05:24] (laughter.) Lita [00:05:24] no, not auntie, just generic exercises on the website for everybody to see. There are very typical physical therapy movements. Jean [00:05:34] Oh ok well Auntie I'm glad that it wasn't your hips because I know that hip replacement can be you know it's rather common but it's kind of extreme and anytime you can avoid surgery you're better off. Mary [00:05:46] Yes indeed I hope sharing this information can help someone else that has sciatica. I read a lot of people have it. Lita [00:05:53] Oh they absolutely do. There are more people than you would think that suffer from sciatica. Six percent of the general population have complained about this problem most of them get it when they're in their 40s or 50s. And the first time it was ever mentioned in medical literature was in the 1400s. Ron [00:06:13] Yeah that was a few years before my time. Jean [00:06:15] Before all our time but it is a bit of a relief knowing that it's not uncommon. I would like to read the definition for sciatica. About 90 percent of the time sciatica is due to a spinal disc herniation pressing on one of the lumbar or sacral nerve roots and it is a medical condition characterized by pain going down the leg from the lower back and the pain might go down the back outside of or front of the leg and onset is often sudden following activities like heavy lifting though you might also have gradual onset and typically the symptoms are on only one side of the body but in certain cases you might have pain on both sides and lower back pain is sometimes but not always present and weakness or numbness may occur in various parts of the affected leg. So it's probably just best to see your doctor. Ron [00:07:06] After meeting with your doctor you found out that stretching exercise would help. I have also heard strengthening the core you know the abdomen is a good way to keep the spine safe from injury. I guess we should all take a lesson from this and keep our core strong. There are some tips and equipment that might just help do that. Lita [00:07:24] Exactly Auntie.. You're in good company. Olivia Newton John recently went through treatment for sciatica and JFK had terrible back pain throughout his life. I'm glad that you found out what was the actual problem and now you can have it treated. We want to thank you again for sharing your story with us today. We all hope that those stretches can help you find relief. Mary [00:07:48] Thank you for having me. Ron [00:07:51] It was great having your Aunt Mary here to talk with us about sciatica. I think we should discuss the relationship between sciatica and arthritis. Lita [00:07:59] That's a good idea Ron especially since next week's topic will be covering arthritis. This will act as a good lead in to that topic. The sciatic nerve happens to be the longest and largest nerve in the body. It starts in the lumbar region of the lower back and it works its way under the gluteus muscles in your butt and down the thigh and leg.   Jean [00:08:25] Yes and any irritation of that nerve will cause the pain that Auntie Mary was talking about with her sciatica. According to the Arthritis Foundation osteoarthritis can involve the lumbar spine by the formation of osteophytes or bone spurs forming on the vertebra. The facet joints on the sides of the spine or even on the inside of the spinal canal. Lita [00:08:51] Right and I will post more detailed pictures on the page of our website dedicated to this topic. But to try to give you a visual right now about what we're talking about and osteophytes t looks like a ragged edge of the bone rather than the smooth edges that we're born with that ragged edge causes the pain as it puts pressure or irritation on the nerves near that edge. Ron [00:09:17] That is probably a great idea, to post pictures. It's hard to imagine all of these body parts in your mind with the osteophytes that occur on each side of the spine or within the spinal canal itself. The sciatic nerve has a good chance of being irritated. Isn't that right. Lita [00:09:34] Yes Ron. And that's what they call spinal stenosis or a narrowing of the nerve pathways. Because of these osteophytes. Ron [00:09:44] Well that makes sense. Is this something that just happened with age or how do you avoid it. Lita [00:09:51] No it doesn't necessarily only happen with old age. It's not really an old age disease though the incidence does increase with age. Young people that have repetitive injuries in sports can develop it hemophiliacs that have bleeding disorders can have it due to a lack of oxygen rich blood supply and death of the bone tissue and certain occupations that require a kneeling or squatting climbing stairs that can also cause osteoarthritis. But as we age over time you may have wear and tear on different joints which can also cause it.   Ron [00:10:29] That does mean taking care of yourself as you go through life staying fit and healthy is always a good idea. Jean [00:10:36] Exactly. Everything in moderation avoid putting too much stress on any one joint or set of joints and avoid repetitive activities that only use one set of joints such as kneeling as far as sciatica pain goes or sciatic pain there are simple things you can do at home such as using cold compresses or heat whichever works for you. Usually the acute phase of symptom usually during the acute phase of symptoms cold compresses on the affected buttock for 10 to 15 minutes. Three to four times a day seems to work best. You can even use a bag of frozen peas wrapped in towels.  Heat such as warm compresses may be preferred by some patients especially if used a couple of days after the initial episode of course always ask your doctor and see your doctor if you start having  any unusual pain in any joint. And if the pain does not resolve in a day or so. Ron [00:11:32] Well since we're going to cover arthritis more in depth next week. Maybe we should wrap this up now. Jean [00:11:38]  I second the motion. Lita [00:11:39] Okay I can take a hint. [00:03:19][6.9] Jean: [00:03:20] So when you got home you saw your doctor. [00:03:22][1.7] Mary: [00:03:23] I did end up going to the chiropractor. Lita probably suggested that go, since I haven't been there before. [00:03:28][5.0] Lita: [00:03:29] I vaguely remember that, it certainly sounds like something I would do. [00:03:33][3.5] Jean: [00:03:34] Did the chiropractor help at all. [00:03:35][1.6] Mary: [00:03:36] No not really. They told me to do my exercises and I didn't have to go back. I did one exercise for a while and it didn't seem to help. So I just stopped. [00:03:47][10.8] Ron: [00:03:48] So it just continued to bother you. [00:03:50][2.3] Mary: [00:03:52] Yes the pain wasn't bad. It was really just annoying numbness. But not really excruciating pain. So, and so I dealt with it. [00:04:00][8.4] Lita: [00:04:01] Well I could understand that, I guess if it's just annoying, and it's not really painful then you just deal with it, Now, that was a long time ago. The five or six years, can you bring us up to speed on what's going on now? [00:04:12][10.9] Mary: [00:04:13] Within the past six months or so my symptoms changed and now on top of the numbness the right leg I have pain on the lower back on hips I end up going to my GP who ordered x rays on my hips and I was worried that I might need hip surgery. The pain has been pretty bad, even keeping me from parties and socializing. It hurts to sit or stand so I end up spending a lot of time on the couch with a heating pad. [00:04:38][25.7] Jean: [00:04:40] I'm so sorry to hear that. What did the X-rays show, when you had those X-rays done? [00:04:44][4.5] Mary: [00:04:45] My doctor called me and he said that the hips were fine. It was just that I had sciatica. [00:04:49][4.1] Ron: [00:04:51] Well I bet that was a relief to you. [00:04:52][1.4] Mary: [00:04:53] Yeah she told me to, I should get on my back and do some exercises and then I told her. "Are you going to come over to help me up?". [00:05:00][7.8] Lita: [00:05:02] Well yeah I think I recommended that you do the exercises in bed. [00:05:05][3.8] Mary: [00:05:06] That is what I have been doing. It has been helping. [00:05:09][2.5] Ron: [00:05:10] Well what kind of exercises are these that you're doing in bed. [00:05:12][2.6] Jean: [00:05:13] I don't think she's gonna be showing you what she does in bed Ron. [00:05:15][2.4] Lita: [00:05:16] Oh. hhooohooo hoo [00:05:17][1.1] Jean: [00:05:17] Sorry. [00:05:17][0.0] Ron: [00:05:18] (Laughing) [00:05:18][0.0] Mary: [00:05:19] Several stretching moves. I have pictures. [00:05:21][2.0] Lita: [00:05:22] Well I'm gonna post those pictures, of those exercizes [00:05:24][1.7] Jean: [00:05:23] oh boy [00:05:23][0.0] Ron: [00:05:24] (laughter.) [00:05:24][0.0] Lita: [00:05:24] no, not of auntie, just generic exercises on the website for everybody to see. There are very typical physical therapy movements. [00:05:34][9.4] Jean: [00:05:34] Oh ok well Aunty I'm glad that it wasn't your hips because I know that hip replacement can be, you know it's rather common, but it's kind of extreme and anytime you can avoid surgery you're better off. [00:05:45][10.7] Mary: [00:05:46] Yes indeed I hope sharing this information can help someone else that has sciatica. I heard a lot of people have this. [00:05:52][6.5] Lita: [00:05:53] Oh they absolutely do. There are more people than you would think that suffer from sciatica. Six percent of the general population have complained about this problem. Most of them get it when they're in their 40s or 50s. And the first time it was ever mentioned in medical literature was in the 14 hundreds. [00:06:12][18.9] Ron: [00:06:13] Yeah that was a few years before my time. [00:06:14][1.5] Jean: [00:06:15] Before all of our times- but it is a bit of a relief knowing that it's not uncommon. I would like to read the definition for sciatica. About 90 percent of the time sciatica is due to a spinal disc herniation pressing on one of the lumbar or sacral nerve roots and it is a medical condition characterized by pain going down the leg from the lower back and the pain might go down the back outside of or front of the leg and Ansett is often sudden following activities like heavy lifting though you might also have gradual onset and typically the symptoms are on only one side of the body but in certain cases you might have pain on both side and lower back pain is sometimes but not always present and weakness or numbness may occur in various parts of the affected leg. So it's probably just best to see your doctor. [00:07:05][49.2] Ron: [00:07:06] After meeting with your doctor you found out that stretching exercise would help. I have also heard strengthening the core, you know the abdomen, is a good way to keep the spine safe from injury. I guess we should all take a lesson from this and keep our core strong. There are some tips and equipment that might just help do that. [00:07:24][18.0] Lita: [00:07:24] Exactly auntie, you're in good company. Olivia Newton John recently went through treatment for sciatica and JFK had terrible back pain throughout his life. I'm glad that you found out what was the actual problem and now you can have it treated. We want to thank you again for sharing your story with us today. We all hope that those stretches can help you find relief. [00:07:47][22.7] Mary: [00:07:48] Thank you for having me. [00:07:49][1.1] Ron: [00:07:51] It was great having your Aunt Mary here to talk with us about sciatica. I think we should discuss the relationship between sciatica and arthritis. [00:07:58][7.6] Lita: [00:07:59] That's a good idea again especially since next week's topic will be covering arthritis. This will act as a good lead in to the topic. The sciatic nerve happens to be the longest and largest nerve in the body. It starts in the lumbar region of the lower back and it works its way under the gluteus muscles in your butt and down the thigh and leg. [00:08:24][24.3] Jean: [00:08:25] Yes and any irritation of that nerve will cause the pain that Auntie Mary was talking about with her sciatica. According to the Arthritis Foundation osteoarthritis can involve the lumbar spine by the formation of osteophytes or bone spurs forming on the vertebra. The facet joints on the sides of the spine or even on the inside of the spinal canal. [00:08:51][25.6] Lita: [00:08:51] Right and I will post more detailed pictures on the page of our website dedicated to this topic. But to try to give you a visual right now about what we're talking about and osteophyte looks like a ragged edge of the bone rather than the smooth edges that we're born with that ragged edge causes the pain as it puts pressure or irritation on the nerves near that edge. [00:09:16][24.8] Ron: [00:09:17] That is probably a great idea. I could post pictures. It's hard to imagine all of these body parts in your mind with the asked the advice that occur on each side of the spine or within the spinal canal itself. The sciatic nerve has a good chance of being irritated. Isn't that right. [00:09:34][16.2] Lita: [00:09:34] Yes Ron. And that's what they call spinal stenosis or a narrowing of the nerve pathways. Because of these asked your fights. [00:09:43][8.6] Ron: [00:09:44] Well that makes sense. Is this something that just happened with age or how do you avoid it. [00:09:51][6.5] Lita: [00:09:51] No it doesn't necessarily only happen with old age. [00:10:28][36.7] Ron: [00:10:29] That does mean taking care of yourself as you go through life staying fit and healthy is always a good idea. [00:10:34][5.2] Jean: [00:10:36] Exactly. You can even use a bag of frozen peas wrapped in Chapel heat such as warm compresses may be preferred by some patients especially if used a couple of days after the initial episode of course always ask your doctor and see your doctor if you start having it any unusual pain in any joint. And if the pain does not resolve in a day or so. [00:11:31][55.3] Ron: [00:11:32] Well since we're going to cover arthritis more in depth next week. Maybe she just read this up now. [00:11:38][5.4] Jean: [00:11:38] . I second the motion. [00:11:39][1.1] Lita: [00:11:39] Okay I can take a hint. Do you remember 2001? No, not the film, the year Australia celebrated its Centenary. The year we started watching a group of St. Kilda based twenty-somethings in The Secret Life of Us. The year Ansett released its infamous advertisement- Am I with Ansett? Absolutely- only to collapse months later along with One.Tel, HIH and Enron. It was the year of the 2001 census and the year that Francesca Higgens, a librarian, became the first woman to be awarded a year of paid maternity leave.Who can forget, it was also the year that a Norwegian fishing boat called the MV Tampa intercepted a wooden fishing vessel packed with asylum seekers between Indonesia and Australia, and setting off a series of events that dramatically transformed the way Australia deals with asylum seekers who arrive by boat. Most people remember one particular date that year- September 11. The attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon dwarfed most other events in our collective consciousness and have since shaped the world we live in.On this episode, Tamson and Anna speak to Phillipa McGuinness whose upcoming book, The Year Everything Changed 2001, chronicles her personal history that year, interwoven with the larger historical events occurring around the world. Phillipa has been a publisher, mainly of Australian history, for more than twenty years. This is her first attempt at ‘swapping sides.’ You can follow her on Twitter @pipmcg2001 will be available through Penguin Random House on 28 May but you can pre-order it here.
