The 2024 Pharmacist Authors Series concludes today with Part 3 of 3. The goal of the series is to inspire you to write a book. Who is the third author in this series? It's me (Kim Newlove, RPh/Podcast Host)! Today we're talking about my eBook and audiobook. The title is Pharmacist Podcaster: A Podcast-Planning Guide for Pharmacy Professionals. It's a 59-page ebook with 12 worksheets. The audiobook is 92 minutes long at 1X speed, and the introduction is included in this episode. I'll tell you what it's about, where you can find it, advice for pharmacist authors, and more. I also have three guests in this episode. The first two are my publishers: Dr. Janan Sarwar and Dr. Theary Chhim from Publishing in Doses. We share a 30-minute conversation. Then, my third guest is audio engineer Julie Walthers from Whole Story Studio. Our conversation is about 30 minutes as well. Julie helped me with the audiobook. Welcome to part 2 of 3 in the 2024 Pharmacist Authors Series! The goal of the series is to inspire you to write your first book. Dr. Helen Sairany is my guest. She is an expert on trauma. As we discuss her book, The We you Don't See: Understanding the Long Shadows of Trauma, she shares the following: Her background as a trauma survivor Why she wrote The We you Don't See: Understanding the Long Shadows of Trauma What the book is about Her target audience When to read the book What she wants you to do with the information [after you read the last page] Where you can buy the book Advice for pharmacist authors During our interview, Helen also reads two excerpts from the book. Bio - written by Helen Sairany, PharmD (July 2024) As a 7-year-old Kurdish child in Iraq, a country torn by war and conflict, I was spotted by a U.S. Marine deployed to my country with a grenade in my hand, who saved my life by exchanging the grenade for a bag of candy. He later escorted my family and I out of war to seek refuge in the U.S. Because of my turbulent childhood, I was diagnosed with complex PTSD in 2013. Thus, I aspire to live in a world where the vast majority are trauma-informed, feel psychologically safe and valued for the work they put out, and return home fulfilled. Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic began, I have been open about my dormant childhood trauma. I have been traveling worldwide to give talks on topics such as trauma-informed care, leadership, and the workforce. After having traveled to more than 100 countries worldwide, I developed an appreciation for the diverse mix of cultures, people, and traditions. My interest in trauma stems from personal experiences of living through wars, navigating complex relationships, and continually learning what it means to be human. Steve Leuck, PharmD Bio (June 2024) After graduating University of the Pacific school of pharmacy in 1987, Steve began his practice in a local community hospital pharmacy where he stayed for the 8 years. For the following 18 months, Steve completed a 28-day drug and alcohol treatment program, worked through licensing stipulations with the board of pharmacy, and attended a yearlong course of study to become a certified addiction counselor. Steve successfully transitioned back to pharmacy where he worked the next 25 years in a clinic pharmacy for a local community hospital. During this time, Steve developed and implemented a bedside education and meds-to-bed program in order to help educate patients as well as assure they acquired their new medications upon discharge from the hospital. Throughout this time, Steve founded and developed AudibleRx; an internet-based patient medication education platform designed specifically for those challenged with literacy or visual impairment. In 2023, AudibleRx was donated to a medical information based non-profit organization. After nearly 33 years of practice with the same institution, Steve retired and took a half-time position for another hospital which allows him time to travel with his wife, ride his bike through the Santa Cruz mountains, and write. You may have found/read a book from this series. You may have been inspired to write a book too. You may have connected with a pharmacist author and/or followed them on social media. He's either written and/or produced books in four major categories, pharmacology, pharmacotherapy, career/residency, and professional school admissions and interviews. He has taught college pharmacology and chemistry for over a decade and a half and lives in Ankeny, Iowa, with his wife Mindy and triplet daughters Brielle, Rianne, and Teagan. You can work with him at https://residency.teachable.com/courses/ or hear his podcasts at pharmacy.libsyn.com and memorizing.libsyn.com Highlights from our interview Tony is an English major. His expertise is in writing and helping people tell their story. He's more of a writing expert than than a residency expert. Tony helps pharmacy students one-on-one write a Letter of Intent. The goal is to find a pharmacist residency that's a good fit. According to Tony, it's very hard for pharmacists to talk about themselves and to do a “humble brag." The audience for this 8-part books series is pharmacy students, namely P2's for 3-year programs and P3's for 4-year programs. Students, read these books as you start those years of school! Tony loves audiobooks, and he understands the need for them for his readers. However, depending on the length of the book, Tony sometimes hires narrators instead of narrating the books himself. Up first in my Summer 2023 Pharmacist Authors Series is Salam Kabbani, PharmD. She wrote COVID Long-Hauler: My Life Since COVID and narrated the audiobook. A sample of her audiobook is included at the end of the episode. Bio Salam Kabbani, PharmD is an infectious diseases pharmacy specialist at Olathe Medical Center in the greater Kansas City area. Her experience with long-COVID disability motivated her to write a memoir about her experiences so she can spread empathy by sharing her honest human experience. She is very passionate about advocating for patients and is currently working on a new series highlighting long-COVID symptoms and different strategies to mitigate them. Outside of pharmacy she is an avid reader and shares book recommendations on her Bookstagram and blog. She loves to be outdoors and takes every opportunity she can to go hiking when her health permits. She works part-time at Club Pilates and considers this her “fun job”, and she truly believes that reformer pilates has helped recover some of her strength after long-COVID. She lives with her cat Luna and feels grateful for every experience life has to offer her. She loves connecting with people, and especially long-haulers, and would love to hear your stories, answer any questions, or just chat through any of the links below! Visit Global Bookshelves International (publisher), Amazon, or Barnes and Noble to purchase your printed copy today! The audiobook is available through Audible and iTunes. I listened to the audiobook, and I enjoyed it! ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ During the second half of our interview, Salam talked about her experience narrating her audiobook. Because it's a memoir, she wanted to narrate it herself. According to Salam, it was a challenge, but she's glad she did it. Her goal was to release the print and audiobook versions at the same time, but the print version was first to market. Her 3 hour audiobook took 6 hours of recording time (not all in one day). Salam's advice to other pharmacist authors who want to narrate their own audiobook: Prepare: Practice, hydrate, and allow plenty of time to record. Pick your most energetic/refreshed time of the day to record. (Avoid recording after your work day.) Pick a studio you're comfortable with. Make sure you can sit comfortably and place your reading materials in front of you. Find an engineer who is experienced with recording, editing, and producing audio files to the specifications you need. Cautionary tale: The first engineer Salam worked with recorded the entire book, but he did not finalize her files to specs; he was inexperienced. Salam needed help from a second audio engineer - Julie Walthers from Whole Story Studio. With Julie's help, Salam's files passed ACX specs, and publishing the audiobook went smoothly. Can you help the author out? If you know of a book group or support group who might like COVID Long Hauler: My Life Since COVID, recommend it to them. They could read it and have a discussion. If you know of a podcast that could interview Salam about her book, please nominate her to the host or let Salam know about the podcast. LinkedIn messages work well. Are you a generator or a reactor? In this episode I talk about the personality you take on when you speak in public. You likely fall into one of two broad categories: generators and reactors. Thank you for listening to episode 144 of The Pharmacist's Voice ® Podcast! For the full show notes, visit https://www.thepharmacistsvoice.com/podcast/. Many of the ideas in this episode were inspired by Valerie Geller's book Beyond Powerful Radio: A Communicator's Guide to the Internet Age chapter two, which is titled, “Are you a Generator or a Reactor?” Generators are bursting with ideas that come from within, but they can work either alone or with others. Some statements that describe a generator: “A generator is undaunted by a blank page.” “Has a strong, independent imagination” “Can easily work alone or as part of a team.” “Has a lot of ideas and energy.” “Can sit in a room alone, and their mind overflows with ideas.” Who are some “Generators” in the world of pharmacy podcasts? In my humble opinion, two pharmacist podcasters who come mind: Dr. Adam Martin (host of The Fit Pharmacist Podcast) and Dr. Erin L. Albert (host of The Edutainer Podcast). Reactors are also creative individuals. A reactor “reacts” to something as the source of their material. Some statements that describe reactors: “A reactor faces a blank page with terror.” “A reactor can be very funny or comment thoughtfully when paired with a generator.” I like to think of this in improv terms. A reactor can, “Yes, and” very well. Reactors “react” well in an interview situation when guests generate for them.” Being a reactor or a generator is like being right or left handed. One isn't better than the other, however, most people are reactors. True generators are rare. If needed, a right-handed person can learn to use their left hand, and a left-handed person can learn to use their right hand. Could you adapt to be a generator or a reactor if the occasion called for it? I bet you could! This could apply to any type of public speaking, like leading a session at a conference, working in a group, being a podcast guest, or hosting a podcast. Lots of situations. During this episode, I discuss: What would happen if you put a reactor in the role of a generator? What would happen if you put a generator in the role of a reactor? What would happen if you put two reactors together? What would happen if you put two generators together? Are you a generator or reactor looking to start a podcast? Why are you starting a podcast? Who is it for? What do you want listeners to do with the information? In podcasting, knowing some of the common pitfalls, like putting two generators or two reactors together can help. Prepare Ask good questions. Interrupt and redirect when necessary. And remember to deliver the content that your audience wants to hear. On my journey from pharmacist to voice actor and podcast host, I have learned that I need something to react to in order to create podcast episodes. Identifying and developing your strengths will serve you well in your public-speaking roles. Embrace your personality (whichever one it is), do your best with the strengths you have, and challenge yourself to grow. Generate for other reactors; challenge generators to react for you; and be the best generator or reactor you can be. Subscribe to or Follow The Pharmacist's Voice Podcast! Why did I start a podcast? I started The Pharmacist's Voice Podcast for three reasons: Dr. Erin L. Albert suggested I look into starting a podcast; the podcast works as a branding tool; and the podcast helps me network. Who is my intended audience? Pharmacists, pharmacy students, pharmacy technicians, and voice actors in the medical space. What do I want you to do with the information in this podcast? The number one thing I want you to do is BE INSPIRED TO USE YOUR VOICE! That means, I want you to feel inspired to use your expertise/your passion for something that you feel is worthwhile. Please note that I am not the voice of the pharmacy profession. This podcast is not about me trying to position myself as the voice of the pharmacy profession. I want to inspire people to use their voices. The 4 main things I struggle with are carrying the conversation all by myself on solo shows (because I'm a reactor, not a generator), finding time to podcast, audio engineering, and voice issues, like muscle tension dysphonia and losing my voice after a cold. Coming up in 2022, I will continue to publish one episode/week. There will be solo shows and interview shows. I plan to do more series, and I hope to participate in NaPodPoMo. Today's episode is the third (and final) part of my pharmacy podcasts series. Part one was an introduction to the series, including the definition of a pharmacy podcast and where to find them. Plus, part one featured a brief interview with fellow pharmacist podcaster Dr. Christina Madison, The Public Health Pharmacist. (That's episode 118 if you want to check that out.) Then, Part 2 of the series featured a list of pharmacy podcasts I listen to most and why I listen to pharmacy podcasts. (That's episode 119 if you want to check that one out as well.) Special Guest Todd Eury (Founder of The Pharmacy Podcast Network) joins me today for a discussion about why pharmacists should have a podcast. We'll talk about what's in it for the pharmacist hosting the podcast and what's in it for the listener. If you're unfamiliar with Todd Eury, you're in for a treat! He's a Pittsburgh native who started the first podcast about the profession of Pharmacy in 2009. Today, the Pharmacy Podcast Network is the global leader in podcasting about the business and profession of pharmacy. Todd and I have been in touch for just about as long as I have been a podcaster, which is two years. He has been a cheerleader for me and all pharmacy podcasts, and that's one of the reasons that he's on the show today. As soon as he saw that I launched a series about pharmacy podcasts, he reached out and offered to help me with it. I'm so glad he did! His enthusiasm for pharmacy podcasts is unmatched, and there's no one I would rather have hosted today's discussion with. Thanks Todd! Apple Podcasts Google Podcasts Spotify Amazon/Audible Todd has been in pharmacy since 2004. He launched the first podcast about the pharmacy profession. Todd is the Founder of the Pharmacy Podcast Network (PPN). The network has more than 40 participating pharmacist podcasters. There are more than 1400 episodes as of October 2021. The network has around 82,000 listens per month. On average, PPN releases 6 podcasts per week and approximately 24 episodes per month. As a non-pharmacist, Todd brings a different perspective to podcasting. He advocates for the pharmacist and using audio as a supplement to education. I listen to shows on the Pharmacy Podcast Network. My favorite is Storrie with Dr. Christine Manukyan. Sometimes, I do research on my up-coming guests by listening to interviews on The Pharmacy Podcast Network. Many podcasts published by pharmacists reach other pharmacists. Todd and I discussed how podcasts could also be patient-facing and used as a tool to build a relationship between the patient and the pharmacist. Community-facing podcasts could also create goodwill in the community. Topics could include community events, flu shot information, disease states, store hours, the history of the pharmacy, “meet the pharmacist(s) or tech(s)” episodes, and more! Pharmacists learn from one another. If a pharmacist is interested in starting a podcast, they could listen to other podcasts published by pharmacists or the PPN to get ideas about starting their own. We talked briefly about disclaimers pharmacists should consider using on podcasts. According to Todd, podcasting allows you to build a very strong relationship with your audience very fast. Your voice means something to your audience. It's different from writing. Audio is more personal. It can also be part of a pharmacist's brand. Todd said, “Don't put so much pressure on yourself.” Podcasting can be messy! We discussed how the first few episodes of a podcast are not as good as the 100th. You need to make mistakes and learn. I personally struggle with solo shows because I want to sound natural and conversational and avoid sounding boastful or clueless. There are several podcast formats. “Journey style” is one of them. That's what I use for my solo shows. I share what I have learned during my career transition from pharmacist to voice actor. In a journey-style podcast, you don't need to know everything. Other formats include advice shows, interview shows, and panel discussions. Todd likes to include different formats on the Pharmacy Podcast Network. Setting the expectation that podcast content will improve over time can help avoid perfectionism. Todd says, “Just jump in.” You will get better and feel more confident over time as you learn how to think on your feet. Podcasting develops communication skills that transfer to working one-on-one with patients, in a group, or at a conference. Podcasting can supplement or build your mission. It depends on your goal (your why). Todd says that “Podcasting should supplement, enhance, and amplify a primary source of information.” Podcasts build credibility, a listener base, and followers. Podcasts can help students. Think, “audio cliff notes.” Students can share with other students. According to Todd, AudioRX.study is a supplement to learning, not a primary source of information. People told me I should put my original content out there. I took that advice. I am now a podcaster and an online course creator. To learn more about my online course Pronounce Drug Names Like a Pro ©, visit https://www.kimnewlove.com. You can sponsor your podcast with a product you create, such as an online course. I talk about podcasting on my podcast. I used two examples. I have an episode about microphones and an episode about best practices for podcast guests. My show notes give a lot of value, including links for products. Christina Madison, PharmD is fearless and a good role model for podcasters. What's in it for the listener? In short, different things from different podcasts. Many pharmacy podcasts are pharmacist-to-pharmacist. Show notes have information listeners may want. Some podcasts have raffles and give-aways (book give-aways, for example). Podcast content is for the listener, not the podcaster. When done well, listeners will feel connected to the podcaster. Every podcast should have a website so that the audience can connect with the podcaster. Suggestions, comments, guest nominations, etc. are all things listeners can reach out to podcasters about. Survey feedback helped Todd add another podcast to his network: The Pediatric Pharmacist Revue with host Dr. Allison Chung. What's in it for the host (pharmacist, business, association, or organization)? Branding, advertising, and promotion Networking Share your journey or experiences and help others Use your authority on a topic. (Be a thought leader.) Build creditability It's a business card It opens doors Build a tribe (listener base and followers) Teach/give advice Share stories Start a rebellion Inspire others Conquer a personal challenge Make something complex easier for the audience to understand Reach other pharmacists Reach patients Reach a community Catharsis (Get something off your chest!) She's a pharmacist and business development consultant, specializing in pharmacist-led billing models. She consults on and produces e-learning programs for state and national organizations, pharmacy wholesalers, payers, and technology start-ups. She has books and online courses available for individuals looking to leverage their pharmacy knowledge into monetized clinical programs at https://pharmapreneuracademy.com. She speaks internationally about trends in leveraging pharmacists to improve value-based care. The focus of our interview is on Blair's upcoming Elevate Pharmacy Virtual Summit, which is LIVE over Zoom October 21, and 22, 2021, 9 AM to 4 PM Central Time. Content will highlight Blair's experience, what she sees that is working in the pharmacy industry and what's working in consulting, and so much more. Even if you are listening to this episode after the Summit, you will still get value from listening to this episode. Blair talks about how she uses her voice to advance the profession of pharmacy and educate other pharmacists on how to leverage their pharmacy knowledge into monetized clinical programs. To learn more, visit https://pharmapreneuracademy.com. Highlights from the interview Knowing your “why” is important. Blair's mission is elevating the profession of pharmacy. In the beginning, Blair was shy about using her voice. She wanted to be anonymous and feels that she has always been more of a writer. Blair launched the Elevate Pharmacy Virtual Summit in 2017 to share other pharmacists' voices. Pharmacist-led clinical services can impact quality metrics and make a positive impact on ROI for pharmacy services. Blair mentioned 3 different models: Physician's office path Pharmacy-based path Patient-pay path Blair will be teaching the 4 Pillars of Pharmapreneurial Success during the Elevate Pharmacy Virtual Summit. We need to hear pharmacists share what's working for them and the impact they are having. Blair will introduce Summit participants to some amazing pharmacists. Sign up for Blair's newsletter through her website to learn about upcoming events and opportunities. Pharmapreneur Academy has a great team, including someone who will help pharmacists sell their services. Pharmacists have a hard time selling without feeling “salesy.” Blair is from a small town in NE Arkansas. She talked about imposter syndrome. Blair was self-conscious about her accent at first. Now, she owns it! She had a limiting belief that people would perceive her as “less than” because of her accent. Personal and career development has helped her move past her limiting beliefs. I mentioned the book Own Your Greatness by Lisa Orbé-Austin and Dr. Richard Orbé-Austin. In Own Your Greatness, Drs. Orbé-Austin talk about “ANTS” = automatic negative thoughts and how to overcome them. Blair wants to found a non-profit foundation to help pharmacists learn how to show up, demonstrate their value, and be an advocate at the national level. Listen to the end of the interview for Blair's answers to the following 5 questions: What is the biggest challenge you face in creating an online conference? What's the best thing that's happened since you started the Elevate Pharmacy Virtual Summit? What's the best thing that's happened since you started the Pharmapreneur Academy? What's the best piece of advice anyone in the pharmacy world has ever given you? Other than imposter syndrome, what's one hidden pitfall in pharmacy that prevents pharmacists from succeeding? Today’s episode is an interview with Dr. Erin L. Albert. She’s a pharmacist, attorney, educator, podcaster, and author. Our conversation focuses on thought leadership through writing and publishing so that you can be inspired to share your ideas with the world. Erin is both a pharmacist and an attorney. Erin is an author of over a dozen books, and has served many corners of pharmacy practice--community pharmacy practice, the pharmaceutical industry (in a variety of capacities, such as clinical research, pharmacovigilance, field-based medical affairs, and medical marketing), pharmacy benefits, Medicaid, drug pricing, and academia for over a decade. She taught at Butler University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, where her writing skills transferred into publishing, and she taught/mentored student publishing projects--including several children's book publications, adult pharmacy publications, and even founded a healthcare review for students across campus, BU Well. In addition to publishing her own books on a variety of pharmacy, legal, entrepreneurship and STEM subjects, Erin also has written for Pharmacy Times, Pharmacy Careers, and GoodRx. Last, she has podcasted for decades on a variety of topics as well, including writing and publishing, most recently on her own show, The Edutainer. Her books have been featured on DanPink.com, Entrepreneur, The New York Times, The Huffington Post, and Forbes. Her latest book is Punk Rock Pharmacy: DIY Your Healthcare Career. Links Website erinalbert.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/erinalbert/ ebooks: https://payhip.com/pharmllc and on Amazon. Highlights from the interview Thought leadership is, “Influencing a narrative by understanding what needs to be done or needs to be changed.” Thought leaders can influence the narrative to affect positive change. Writing and publishing is important for the narrative. We can call out bad behavior; promote good behavior; and solve problems. We might be able to make things better by publishing. Publishing includes more than one venue. Podcasts, video, and anything you put into the universe to consume is publishing. Erin’s new book is Punk Rock Pharmacy: DIY Your Own Healthcare Career (eBook subscription). Different generations consume content in different ways. “Fan fiction” is popular right now. Punk Rock Pharmacy is like an experiment. It’s an “ebook-u-mentary,” and it’s like a choose-your-own-adventure book. Part is written and can be purchased now (April 2021). The rest will be like fan fiction where the readers will interact with Erin and help her shape the narrative on what they want to know about their own healthcare career. Erin is looking to other healthcare professionals to help her help them. Erin’s Annual Pharmacy Rebellion Survey helped with Punk Rock Pharmacy. Who is Erin trying to reach through writing and publishing? It depends. On the Edutainer Podcast, Erin explores the intersection of education and entertainment. The podcast is not just about pharmacy and healthcare; it’s much broader. In print, Erin sticks more to pharmacy, pharmacy and law, entrepreneurship, and STEM. We need specialists and generalists. Erin is a generalist. She prefers to talk about a lot of things and does not limit herself to one topic in the broad sense of publishing. Recently, Erin attended the California Nurses Association (Virtual) Conference on Policy and Politics. She loved it! Nurses are doing things that pharmacy can use. Pharmacists can elevate the pharmacy profession by taking the greatest hits from other professions and bringing them into our own. Seeing other people do cool things can inspire you to do something different too. Case examples inspire others. Erin wants to help coach and develop pharmacists into the careers they want. People want to be what they can see. Some career paths don’t exist on paper. Giving pharmacists a way to see how wide healthcare and pharmacy practice are now will help them reinvent themselves and take slices from others to create their own customized career portfolio. “What makes you weird is your superpower.” We need to bring our passions and interests from outside of pharmacy into the profession to create something unique and cool. You must know yourself better than anyone else. Know your Ikigai: What you love to do [and what you don’t love to do]. What the world needs. What you’re good at. What you can get paid to do. BONUS: What you value. Some pharmacists who are unhappy with their jobs panic and start applying for jobs. In the end, they end up treading water. As an alternative, Erin recommends getting clear on who you are. Know your strengths and seek to use them. Anyone looking to change careers needs to do the hard work to figure out what they love/don’t love to, what the world needs, what they’re good at, what they can get paid to do, and what they value. Do the work first, then start shopping for a new gig. It’s ok to search for jobs without “pharmacist” in the title [if you’re a pharmacist]! The Medical Science Liaison: An A to Z Guide, First Edition was Erin's first book. (Also see The Medical Science Liaison: An A to Z Guide, Second Edition.) At first, she planned to publish the content in a peer-reviewed journal. After 6 months of waiting to be published, she became frustrated. She pulled the paper and transformed it into a book. She even created an LLC to help her manage her writing and publishing projects. You could say Erin became an “accidental entrepreneur.” Erin continues to write because she got onto the “writing treadmill” and enjoyed it. She enjoys the routine, and her goal is to publish one book per year if there is an interesting topic that she wants to write about. She has generally published one book per year. Erin enjoys writing about what she’s curious about. It’s part therapy and part investigation. Toni Morrison said, “If there’s a book you really want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.” Writing a book, sharing a video, or publishing a podcast is Erin’s way of taking people along on the ride with her on her learning experience. Ideas can develop over time. Erin talked about “idea funnels.” Something she is curious about might start with a LinkedIn post or blog, then a podcast, and eventually a book. Ex: Erin’s Rebellion survey on LinkedIn morphed into the Punk Rock Pharmacy book. Look for the Annual Rebellion Survey mid-year 2021 on LinkedIn. Post-pandemic, people have changed the way they consume content; generational differences impact content consumption too. Erin is trying to experiment with how she publishes content as a result. Writing and publishing is her laboratory, and she is experimenting constantly. For example, on Erin’s weekly videos, she focuses on pharmacy law, pharmacy benefits, and career development. Erin has self-published books and published books through a publisher. It’s all kind of an experiment because there isn’t necessarily one best way to publish content anymore. Promotion is a challenge Erin faces with publishing. No one will ever promote your book like you will. Publishers don’t solve promotion problems. You need to build your audience. For example, Erin built an audience and a tribe around the book Single. Women. Entrepreneurs. (See also Single Women Entrepreneurs: 5 Years Later.) If you’re going into a new area, and you’re not the “thought leader” in that area (yet), writing and publishing a book helps you become a self-fulfilling prophesy. You become a thought leader by and through curating a new tribe. At the 2019 Medipreneurs Conference in Asheville, NC, Erin and I discussed reaching a broader audience with her books through audiobooks. Erin narrated parts of The New Pharmacist: 46 Doses of Advice (2014) on her podcast in a mini-series because I inspired to to do it and for the benefit of the Class of 2020 Pharmacy School grads. (Way to go, Erin!) She did not read the book cover-to-cover on the Edutainer Podcast, but the response to reading The New Pharmacist: 46 Doses of Advice (2014) on the Edutainer Podcast was awesome! Why did Erin write The New Pharmacist: 46 Doses of Advice? Erin says that once her Butler University [pharmacy] students got their first jobs, they would ask, “Dr. Albert, is that all there is?” The book was her reply to them in “mini doses.” Fun fact! Erin’s writing voice is much like her conversational speaking voice. Erin also read some of her books for children on her podcast, including He Huffed and He Puffed But…A Tale of a Wolf With Asthma. Her books for children are a product of collaboration with college students from different disciplines (education, business, pharmacy, and health sciences). They co-wrote, developed, and illustrated the books. Erin is thankful to her readers, listeners, and followers. She feels it’s an honor and a privilege to have a voice people listen to. We’re all here to learn from each other. Whether it’s one-on-one in conversation or in podcasts and books, we can all use our voices to affect positive change. We have a certain level of responsibility to use our voices. Dr. Erin L. Albert inspired me to look into starting a podcast when we met at the 2019 Medipreneurs Conference in Asheville, NC. If not for her, this podcast might not exist. Thank you for the inspiration, Erin!

There are two main reasons I started a podcast. I was encouraged by another pharmacist podcaster. My podcast is a business tool. Mentioned in this episode Medipreneurs Conference is a business conference for pharmacist entrepreneurs and healthcare entrepreneurs. Dr. Erin L. Albert is a pharmacist, entrepreneur, and podcaster. Dave Jackson and The School of Podcasting (course and podcast) So, You Want to Start a Podcast: Finding Your Voice, Telling Your Story, and Building a Community That Will Listen by Kristen Meinzer At the 2nd Medipreneurs Conference (Asheville, NC) in April 2019, Dr. Erin L. Albert gave a talk about becoming a thought leader through writing and publishing. She also mentioned that podcasting can help you become a thought leader. Dr. Albert encouraged me to start a podcast. That was 14 months ago, and I barely knew what a podcast was. I barely listened to them either. Audiobooks were more my thing. That has changed! Now, I listen to both! I don’t know that I ever would have looked into podcasting if it weren’t for Dr. Albert. I didn’t understand how podcasting could help my career, and I didn’t know how to start a podcast. Why start a podcast then? When a successful pharmacist entrepreneur gives you advice, it’s important to at least consider it. Plus, I wanted to see if Dr. Albert was right. Should I start a podcast? The second reason why I started a podcast has to do with my business, The Pharmacist’s Voice. When I tried to connect podcasting and being a thought leader to my business, it didn’t make sense. It didn’t fit because I’m so early in my voiceover career. How can I be a thought leader already? But, I kept an open mind and researched podcasting more. Eventually, I learned that I could use my podcast as a business tool. I learned how to podcast from Dave Jackson and his online course The School of Podcasting in October 2019. I built the podcast in November, and I launched it on December 4. Because I already knew how to record, edit, and produce audio from my voiceover industry training, building a podcast using Dave Jackson’s process was pretty straightforward. All I had to come up with a name, a format, and the other details. (This episode won’t dig into all those details.) If you are interested in starting a podcast, I would recommend doing three things. Join The School of Podcasting Listen to The School of Podcasting Podcast Read Kristen Meinzer’s book, So, You Want to Start a Podcast: Finding Your Voice, Telling Your Story, and Building a Community That Will Listen. GREAT BOOK! There is more than one podcast format. Examples include roundtables, daily news, list shows, advice shows, recap shows, documentary shows, fiction shows, and more. One day, I heard about journey-style podcasts. That’s a format using story to tell how they got from point A to point B and what they learned. In my case, I was on a journey from pharmacist to voice actor. It was easy to pick the journey-style format for my podcast. A journey-style podcast would allow me to share how I used my voice as a pharmacist, where my journey took me, who I met along the way, and how they use their voices too. It was a great choice for me. The Pharmacist’s Voice Podcast is a podcast, not a statue. Down the road, I could change the format of the podcast to something else, like an advice show. What I learned from both Dave Jackson and Kristen Meinzer’s book is that I can use my podcast to get the word out about my business! I’m a pharmacist, voice actor, and audiobook narrator. When I put that out into the world on a podcast, I position myself as those things for the world to see. That’s how it’s a business tool. I may have accidentally become a thought leader too. People interested in doing what I do contact me all the time. During my career - both pharmacy and voiceover - I have met all kinds of great people. I use my interview shows every other week to help them share how they use their voice as well. Here are 11 examples. Episode 23, Dr. Anna Garrett, hormone expert and author of Perimenopause: The Savvy Sister’s Guide to Hormone Harmony. This is episode 24, and my next four interview shows are all planned out. Let me tell you about them. Episode 25 will be next Friday, July 3, 2020. My guest is Dr. Muhammad Umar Hafeez, a pharmacist with an MBA living in Abu Dhabi, which is located in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He is a telepharmacy advocate, and his practice sites include oil rigs (both onshore and offshore), remote sites in the desert, deep sea platforms, oil barges, and natural and man-made islands in the Arabian Gulf. Episode 27 will be Friday, July 17, 2020. My guest will be Dr. Wendy Stephan, Ph.D. She’s educator and epidemiologist with South Florida’s poison control center. Episode 29 will be on Friday, July 31, 2020. Dr. Jerrica Dodd will be my guest. She is a pharmacist entrepreneur. We met in April 2018 at the first Medipreneurs Conference in Asheville, North Carolina. Episode 31 will be on Friday, August 14, 2020. My guest will be Dr. Allie Xu, a registered pharmacist from Australia. She is a holistic health and life coach specializing in emotional intelligence and the mind-body connection. In closing, I started my podcast because I was encouraged by another pharmacist podcaster, and I wanted to use my podcast as a business tool. I’m happy with how my podcast turned out. I get to share my journey. No one else has the exact same set of variables in their life that I have. I have a husband and two kids who I build my voiceover career around. 3 months ago, COVID changed life as we know it. The job I planned to do “in the margins” when my kids were at school got interrupted. I suddenly had to home school my kids. My husband lost his job May 1. I worked on my voiceover business full-time until my husband started interviewing for jobs again. It’s life; it’s interesting; and it’s my journey! The Pharmacist’s Voice Podcast has listeners in 39 US states and 23 countries. Thank you for reading the show notes!

Podcast Episode 02 In Episode 02, I talked about coaches and how they have helped me. Without help, I would not be where I am today. This episode is not a how-to lesson on getting started in voiceover. I’m just sharing my story. My first motorcycle was a Honda Shadow VLX. Now, I drive a BMW C400X scooter. I took the Basic Rider Course through the Ohio Department of Public Safety. Some call it the “Motorcycle Ohio Program.” motorcycle.ohio.gov I like structured programming that is organized into bite-sized chunks, experienced teachers, hands-on training, and peer support. Facebook Groups and accountability buddies are helpful. For anyone making a career transition or learning a new skill, keep an eye on what is working and what is not. Have clear goals, and recognize when something isn’t a good fit. The right coach can really help, and it’s ok to revisit missed opportunities at a later time. My first business coach was Sandra Wharton at the Women’s Economic Opportunity Center at the Northeast Indiana Innovation Center in Ft. Wayne, IN. I found her on the Small Business Administration’s website in June 2017. I starting working with Marty and Jack from the Northwest Ohio Chapter of SCORE in April 2018. SCORE stands for Service Corps of Retired Executives. To learn more about the Northwest Ohio Chapter of SCORE, visit northwestohio.score.org. I trained with a voiceover coach named Nancy Wolfson January-November 2018. To learn more about Nancy, visit braintracksaudio.com. Jonah Rosenthal at the Global Voice Acting Academy (GVAA) helped me set up my Blue Yeti USB microphone. His Audacity webinar helped me learn how to record, edit, and produce MP3 files. David Rosenthal taught the group medical and technical narration class I took through GVAA. To learn more about GVAA, visit globalvoiceacademy.com. To learn about Hillary Huber, visit hillaryhuber.com. To learn more about Jeffrey Kafer, visit audiobookmentor.com. Sean Pratt is my non-fiction audiobook narration coach. To learn more about Sean Pratt, visit seanprattpresents.com and check out his YouTube video, “So…You want to be an audiobook narrator?” https://youtu.be/NPzPi-_0Xi8 I met Dr. Erin L. Albert at the Medipreneurs Conference in April 2019. To learn more about Dr. Erin L. Albert, visit about.me/erinalbert. Dave Jackson is my Podcasting Coach. To learn more about Dave Jackson and the School of Podcasting, visit schoolofpodcasting.com. Joe Brookhouse got me started with Studio One. To learn more about Joe, visit voicework.me. Don Baarns is my audio engineering coach. His webinars are titled, “Studio One Jumpstart,” “Studio One Advanced,” and “RX Jumpstart.” He runs Facebook Groups for Studio One and RX. To learn more about Don, visit redbaarnsaudio.com. As, I transition from pharmacist to voice actor, I like to find people I trust and listen to them. I’m human, though, and I do make mistakes. Beware the illusory truth effect (“validity effect,” “truth effect,” or the “reiteration effect”). People believe false information to be correct after repeated exposure. I like evidence-based decisions. When learning something new, find experts. Do research. Don’t make major purchases or decisions without thinking them through. It’s not a race. I’m 2.5 years into my journey, and I’m still not where I want to be. To learn more about the Cleveland International Motorcycle Show, visit https://motorcycleshows.com/cleveland.
This episode I had the pleasure of discussing some things that may be holding women back in pharmacy with Erin L. Albert of the Edutainer Podcast. Erin is an expert in this field and recently produced a study "Who's at the Helm of Healthcare? A 2019 Checkup Report" where she focuses on the C-suites of healthcare (https://payhip.com/b/rpCB). We dabbled into not only the hurdles but how we can work together to ensure everyone is given an equal chance when it comes to being promoted and climbing the ranks of healthcare.

Listen in if you want to get in on this new society, tomorrow, 9/17 - for FREE! The American Society of Pharmacovigilance (www.stopADR.org) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. ASP is a national biomedical and health care network with membership open to all health care professionals. Our mission is to rapidly and dramatically reduce the high rate of suffering and mortality due to adverse drug events in the US. We represent the unity of different areas of expertise coming together to have a bigger impact on addressing the fourth leading cause of death in the US. Bio: Sara Rogers, PharmD, BCPS, is a pharmacist, researcher and nonprofit director. As a proponent of personalized medicine and preventing harm from medication use, she co-founded the American Society of Pharmacovigilance in 2018. Since there is a strong genetic component in the way that patients respond to medications, she has taken an active role in addressing barriers to widespread implementation of pharmacogenomics. Dr. Rogers is a member of the Clinical Pharmacogenetics Implementation Consortium, Chairman of the Pharmacogenomics Access and Reimbursement Coalition, and an organizational member of the NIH National Human Genomics Research Institute (NHGRI) Inter-Society Coordinating Committee. She hopes these efforts will lead to improved health outcomes for patients across the US, regardless of socioeconomic status.

Brad Tice, PharmD, MBA, FAPhA, Director, Product Strategy & Commercialization at Cardinal Health -- joins Erin L. Albert, MBA, PharmD, JD, PAHM and Todd S. Eury - on the Pharmacy Podcast Network at the Cardinal Health annual conference dedicated to independent pharmacies throughout the country - the RBC 2017. Pharmacists in Washington State got SB 5557 passed in early 2015—a bill requiring commercial or private health care plans regulated by Washington State to enroll pharmacists into their provider networks, and it mandates that these plans pay pharmacists for services provided if they are within a pharmacist's scope of practice. With more than 10,000 active collaborative practice agreements in existence for pharmacists in Washington State, Rochon said they wanted to “push the bar” even further and make sure pharmacists were compensated for their services. The process was long and involved and passage of the bill was achieved largely through several partnerships with stakeholders ranging from legislators to patient advocacy groups. Part of the process also involved legal maneuvering with an existing Washington State law having to do with providers and health care plans. Please see -- PharmacistsProvideCare.com and encouraged pharmacists to share their patient care stories with policy makers. Thank you to our podcast series sponsor - Cardinal Health. We welcome back returning Pharmacy Podcast guest - Dr. Erin Albert, PharmD, JD, MBA. Erin is an entrepreneur, writer, pharmacist, attorney, and associate professor. She is the founder of two companies (Pharm, LLC and Yuspie, LLC), and currently is the Director of Continuing Education, and Director of the Ribordy Center for Community Practice Pharmacy at Butler University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Seven Major Trends coming and already here in Pharmacy Practice: I. Pharmacy in a box. (AKA Vending Machines) There are going to be more and more pharmacy vending machines coming up. I'll tell you why I don't like them. In the evenings when I was at law school over 4 years and starving, the only cafeteria options we had at 8 pm at night were the vending machines. I fed a lot of money into those vending machines. Sometimes, the food would get stuck inside the vending machine, and I couldn't get it out. Now, getting between me and my Snickers bar when I'm hangry, granted, isn't a pretty scene. Imagine what the sick, tired and angry patient will be experiencing when the prescription doesn't come out of the vending machine? Who's going to be there to fix it? Vending machine pharmacies US: http://www.statepress.com/2014/11/19/vending-machine-replaces-asu-on-campus-pharmacy/ Vending machine pharmacies OUS: http://www.pharmaceutical-journal.com/news-and-analysis/news/trial-of-prescription-vending-machines-begins/11019857.article Skills needed for the pharmacist: Pharmacists are definitely going to need to get tech-y here if they want to dominate in this area. II. Your house is watching your health …is going to not only rule our homes, but it will integrate with our health. This is already happening. a. It's in iOS 8. HealthKit and HomeKit are already in your iPhones. You'll be able to keep everything on your phones and run your life via this tech. I'm just in hopes that Apple's HomeKit has smart tech integrated into the refrigerators and medicine cabinets to simply send off the alert to you and/or your pharmacy when you need a refill on something (and not just Rx, but OTC stuff too). b. other smart tech for homes monitoring Alzheimer's patients: http://www.cnn.com/2014/08/25/tech/innovation/alzheimers-smart-home/ Skills needed for the pharmacist: Tech. Again. And make sure that the pharmacy world is talking to the developers. And vice versa. III. The drones will drop off your prescription: I'm actually kind of baffled as to why Jeff Bezos hasn't gotten into the pharmacy space just yet. Once he has his drones up and running, it would make a lot of sense to send prescription drugs through the “drone” channel, particularly to the elderly who no longer drive. Unless, we go Star Trek and someone invents a drug synthesizer, like the food synthesizer on the show. Jeff Bezos & the drones: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/amazons-jeff-bezos-looks-to-the-future/ Skills needed for the pharmacist: Unless we're going to require more physics here, I'm not sure what we can do. Physics wasn't my strong suit. IV. Pharmacy as a space will need to be first as a third space to survive: I'm not sure the idea of “grocery shopping” and “running errands” will exist in the future. This could free up a lot of our time from stuff we have to do (LIKE run errands) into stuff we WANT to do (like, hang out at cool third spaces other than at home and at work). Or, maybe because of the internet, we won't have a work space that much longer, which would free us to work WHERE and WHEN we want. If that's the case, third spaces are going to need to get a lot cooler for us to WANT to hang out at them. I still think a bookstore/pharmacy hangout would be a good combo. A bank/pharmacy would be a good combo for security's sake. But, if the medicine cabinet is ordering your refill, and the drones are dropping it off–WHY would you need to go to a pharmacy anymore? More on third spaces from our Pharmacy Podcast previously: http://www.slideshare.net/ea6603/community-pharmacy-as-a-third-space-albert Skills needed for the pharmacist: Pharmacists who understand design, civic and city development, psychology, and what makes people come to third spaces will win here. Pharmacies that can create one-of-a-kind experiences for their patients will also win here. (Let's face it, going to pharmacies right now is an utterly forgettable experience. But does it have to be?) I'm also in hopes we have more pharmacist entrepreneurs seizing this opportunity too moving forward. I also think this third space concept is an opportunity for the pharmacist as teacher and coach. I see classes and offerings here as a community hub for wellness. But pharmacists are not only going to have to bring their clinical knowledge here, but also their creativity in bringing in people to listen to their courses on living better lives. In this busy world, that could be a hard sell in the beginning. V. Will live healthcare need to be “edutaining”? This is one area that I think we humans can beat the machines. We are more creative than they are; hence, I think pharmacists will, as educators, have an amazing opportunity to provide value by not only educating, but entertaining as well. In an attention deficit world, I'm sorry to say, mortality really isn't a “hook” anymore. Learning about your health and wellness needs to be like anything else–fun–otherwise, we'll all fall asleep from boredom. I'm not saying this is right, but I am speaking the truth. Gaming in healthcare: http://www.healthit.gov/sites/default/files/IFTF_SR-1494_Innovations_in_Games.pdf Skills needed for the pharmacist: Teaching. In a variety of ways. One of the areas of teaching in pharmacy I'm most fired up about is writing. We focus a lot on oral communication, but we don't do much in the realm of writing. So, I've personally made it my mission to help students stretch their writing talents–like through this creation of BU Well, and for students writing children's books on healthcare topics. This year, we have two that students are producing. One on vaccines. The other for 4th graders in Indiana on STEM leaders of Indiana in time for the Indiana Bicentennial in 2016. I've said it here many times, but I will say it again: writers. Are. Leaders. If you are considering pharmacy programs–ask, “What writing communication courses and co-curricular opportunities do you offer?” I won't, however, tell you what to do if you see blank stares… VI. Labs/tests and wellness checks at the pharmacy: Point of care testing labs. They are a pain to find, then find the hours of, then schedule to go to when your doc orders labs. Instead, I think smart pharmacies will start offering lab and tests inside pharmacies on a regular basis, to help patients avoid the headaches of one off lab testing. This could be for Fido too. Check out Abaxis and their Piccolo machine. Articles: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20441470 and http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/549259 Skills needed for the pharmacist: Pharmacists need to fully understand labs, lab values, when patients should get labs, and clinical aspects of disease management with labs here. This is the only instance thus far where I think more clinical wizardry comes into play. VII. Big Data: I think in the future, pharmacists will be interacting with a lot of big data to assess and seek trends–in the data for patients, and for populations of patients. Large self-insured employers already hire one pharmacist to oversee and manage the health of the patient employee population, and manage the drug formulary that an employer offers to its employees. These days, the drug formulary alone in terms of costs can suck up to 20% of the total healthcare spend for an employer. Keeping a tight reign on this is important. How Twitter tracks the flu: http://www.nationaljournal.com/health-care/how-twitter-tracks-the-flu-20140318 Big data on public health campaigns: http://www.healthcareitnews.com/news/big-data-offer-new-strategy-public-health-campaigns Human Nature Lab (Christakis): http://humannaturelab.net/ Skills needed for the pharmacist: Pharmacists here need to understand pharmacoeconomics and analytics here. They need to be able to see whether or not a drug is worth the spend. And, in the era of specialty drugs – managing specialty drug spend alone is going to be a huge opportunity to reign in costs. They also need some acumen around bioinformatics. Are pharmacy students learning how to manage and run a drug formularly in school? Are we handing a blob of data over to students who can find trends and suggest better management of patients based upon an analysis of those trends? Are we teaching students to PREDICT trends in a population?
