Episode 180 - It's Not Just About the Destination – It's About the Journey as Well

The Ultimate Guide to Being a Birth Partner

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 26, 2026 28:11

In this final episode of the season, I'm bringing together many of the themes we've explored over recent weeks and looking at one central idea: birth is not just about the destination — it's about the journey as well.So often, birth conversations are reduced to outcomes. Was the baby healthy? Did everything go okay? Was everyone safe? And while those things absolutely matter, they are not the full story. In this episode, I explore what gets lost when birth is viewed only as a medical event. When the focus stays solely on monitoring, managing and achieving an outcome, women can disappear from the centre of their own experience. Birth can start to feel like something that happens around them rather than something they are actively moving through.I reflect on how this links to many of the topics we've covered this season, including decision-making in labour, consent, subtle pressure, nervous system responses and what it means to feel safe, informed and included during birth.I also explore why two women can experience similar births on paper and walk away feeling completely differently about them. Our previous experiences, beliefs, fears, nervous system responses and sense of self all shape how birth is experienced in real time.We also touch on the idea of birth as a rite of passage and how this connects to matrescence — the transition into motherhood. Birth is not simply an event to complete. It is part of a much bigger identity shift, and how women move through that process can shape how they step into motherhood afterwards. This episode is a reminder to prepare for more than just the outcome. To understand yourself. To recognise how you respond under pressure. To stay connected to what matters to you.And perhaps most importantly, it's an invitation to stop treating birth as something to simply get through.Because how you experience birth matters. And that experience stays with you long after the baby is born.Thank you for listening this season.Send me a messageIf you love the podcast and would like to support it, then please use the link to 'buy me a coffee' - https://bmc.link/sallyannberesfordIf you would like to buy a copy of either of the books that accompany this podcast please go to your online bookseller or visit Amazon:-Labour of Love - The Ultimate Guide to Being a Birth Partner  - click here:-https://bit.ly/LabourofloveThe Art of Giving Birth - Five Key Physiological Principles - https://amzn.to/3EGh9dfPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth' - Black and White version https://amzn.to/3CvJXmOPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth'- Colour version https://amzn.to/3GknbPFYou can find all my classes and courses on my website - www.sallyannberesford.co.ukFollow me on Instagram @theultimatebirthpartner Book a 1-2-1 session with Sallyann  -  https://linktr.ee/SallyannBeresfordPlease remember that the information shared with you in this episode is solely based on my own personal experiences as a doula and the private opinions of my guests, based on their own experiences.  Any recommendations made may not be suitable fo...

In this episode, I take a deeper look at breathing and relaxation in preparation for labour — going beyond the simple advice to “just breathe” or “try to relax.” These are not magic fixes, but skills that reflect how your nervous system responds to stress, intensity, and the sensations of labour.I talk about how the modern world keeps our bodies in a constant state of alert. Our bodies are always scanning for threat, and for many of us, a slight state of tension has become normal. This affects how we experience birth, because labour is a deeply mammalian process that relies on the body feeling safe, supported, and able to drop into an instinctive state.I explain the difference between physiological pain, which is expected and manageable, and pathological pain, which indicates that something in the body or the baby's position is creating extra intensity. The baby is navigating your body's infrastructure — the uterus, musculoskeletal system, fascia, emotional state, and even placental position — and sometimes that can lead to sensations that cannot be handled by breathing alone. I also explore how the mind interacts with the body during labour. By the end of this episode, you'll understand that breathing and relaxation are part of a bigger picture — a skill set that develops over time, incorporating your body, mind, and nervous system — giving you confidence and practical tools to navigate labour more effectively.Purchase my 1 hour track Breathe Episode 9 - Breathing and Relaxation Skills for labour  Episode 107 - More Breathing and Relaxation Skills for labourEpisode 121 - FREE Somatic Guided Relaxation for your nervous system Episode 141 - Simple strategies for a calm and empowered labour Send me a messageIf you love the podcast and would like to support it, then please use the link to 'buy me a coffee' - https://bmc.link/sallyannberesfordIf you would like to buy a copy of either of the books that accompany this podcast please go to your online bookseller or visit Amazon:-Labour of Love - The Ultimate Guide to Being a Birth Partner  - click here:-https://bit.ly/LabourofloveThe Art of Giving Birth - Five Key Physiological Principles - https://amzn.to/3EGh9dfPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth' - Black and White version https://amzn.to/3CvJXmOPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth'- Colour version https://amzn.to/3GknbPFYou can find all my classes and courses on my website - www.sallyannberesford.co.ukFollow me on Instagram @theultimatebirthpartner Book a 1-2-1 session with Sallyann  -  https://linktr.ee/SallyannBeresfordPlease remember that the information shared with you in this episode is solely based on my own personal experiences as a doula and the private opinions of my guests, based on their own experiences.  Any recommendations made may not be suitable fo...

Why do so many women leave their birth experience wondering, “Why did I agree to that?”In this episode, we explore a rarely discussed but deeply important aspect of childbirth — the body's survival response, and how it can shape decision-making in labour in ways we don't always recognise at the time.Through a powerful listener story, this conversation gently unpacks what can happen when a woman is in a highly vulnerable, hormonally driven state, and how her nervous system may respond to pressure, authority, or perceived threat. We explore the concept of fawning — a natural, biological response where the body seeks safety through compliance — and how this can lead to saying “yes” in moments where there may not have felt like a real choice. We then move into cognitive dissonance, the psychological process that often follows birth, where the brain works to make sense of decisions that may not have felt fully aligned in the moment. This can leave women feeling confused, questioning themselves, or quietly unsettled — even when everything appeared to go “well” on the surface. This episode is not about blame or criticism. It's about understanding.Understanding the nervous system.Understanding the power dynamics within maternity care. And understanding how true, informed consent relies on more than just the presence of a “yes.”We also explore what this means in the context of autonomy and consent, and why awareness of these responses before birth can be so powerful. When women understand how their body and brain may respond under pressure, they can begin to prepare — not to control birth, but to stay more connected to themselves within it.If you have ever felt unsure about decisions made during your birth, or if you're preparing for birth and want a deeper understanding of how to protect your space, your voice, and your autonomy, this episode will offer a new lens — one rooted in compassion, not judgement.Because this isn't about getting it “right.”It's about understanding what's happening — and giving yourself the support and awareness to stay connected to your choices, even in the most intense moments.Send me a messageIf you love the podcast and would like to support it, then please use the link to 'buy me a coffee' - https://bmc.link/sallyannberesfordIf you would like to buy a copy of either of the books that accompany this podcast please go to your online bookseller or visit Amazon:-Labour of Love - The Ultimate Guide to Being a Birth Partner  - click here:-https://bit.ly/LabourofloveThe Art of Giving Birth - Five Key Physiological Principles - https://amzn.to/3EGh9dfPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth' - Black and White version https://amzn.to/3CvJXmOPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth'- Colour version https://amzn.to/3GknbPFYou can find all my classes and courses on my website - www.sallyannberesford.co.ukFollow me on Instagram @theultimatebirthpartner Book a 1-2-1 session with Sallyann  -  https://linktr.ee/SallyannBeresfordPlease remember that the information shared with you in this episode is solely based on my own personal experiences as a doula and the private opinions of my guests, based on their own experiences.  Any recommendations made may not be suitable fo...

There was a significant judgment in a Victorian court last week, one that is causing a great deal of controversy in the medical community. The case centres on what happened when a woman presented to a regional hospital to give birth. The woman, Larissa Gawthrop, was in labour – but the hospital refused to admit her until she’d undergone a vaginal examination. For the hospital, this test is routine, but Gawthrop had been really clear in her birth plan – she’d only consent to an examination if there was an urgent medical reason. What happened next, according to the court decision, was tantamount to assault, and the judge awarded Gawthrop $275,000 in damages.Today, senior writer Wendy Tuohy discusses the landmark case and its implications for the medical community.Subscribe to The Age & SMH: https://subscribe.smh.com.au/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

She and her husband Neil co-founded Sowa Soma, a trauma-informed ayahuasca retreat centre, after Fiona walked away from the PR agency she'd spent years building. What brought her here wasn't one moment — it was three initiations, each one more undeniable than the last. The first was ayahuasca, which found her on a year-long sabbatical 14 years ago when she was finally honest enough to ask: is this it? The second was becoming a mother — an experience she describes as the most mystical portal of her entire life, more profound than any ceremony. And the third was the pandemic, the moment the double life she'd been quietly maintaining for years became impossible to sustain. This is a conversation of rare honesty about what it actually costs to walk away from an identity built over two decades. It's also a conversation about what it means to be a woman moving through the thresholds of her life: the biological, emotional, and spiritual passages that don't come with a manual.ABOUT FIONA:Fiona is a plant medicine facilitator, working with Ayahuasca, Cacao and other non-psychedelic plant allies. Send a textSince last week's episode was released, I've received so many messages from listeners asking for more information about the fourth trimester and postpartum planning that I decided to record this extra episode to explore these topics in more depth. The weeks after birth are often overlooked in birth preparation, yet they represent one of the most significant transitions for both mother and baby. In this episode, I talk about the biological realities of the fourth trimester, why newborn behaviour often makes perfect sense when we understand human development, and why planning for postpartum can make such a difference to recovery and wellbeing.I also explore how cultural expectations in modern Western society can sometimes clash with biology, particularly when it comes to rest, recovery, and the close contact that newborn babies instinctively seek.During the episode, I walk through a practical framework for a postpartum planning conversation. If you are preparing for birth, this is something I encourage you to discuss with your partner or support network before the baby arrives. Taking time to think about support, rest, feeding, emotional wellbeing, and household responsibilities can help protect the early weeks and reduce unnecessary stress.I also explain why postpartum rest is not simply a luxury, but an important part of physical recovery. Giving the body time to heal after pregnancy and birth supports long-term health, including pelvic floor recovery and overall wellbeing. The fourth trimester matters. When we understand the biology behind newborn behaviour and maternal recovery, we can approach this period with more realistic expectations and greater compassion for ourselves and our babies.Episode 172 - Relationship Circles - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-ultimate-guide-to-being-a-birth-partner/id1541228817?i=1000752253453Episode 149 - Postpartum Prolapse - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-ultimate-guide-to-being-a-birth-partner/id1541228817?i=1000706091689 If you love the podcast and would like to support it, then please use the link to 'buy me a coffee' - https://bmc.link/sallyannberesfordIf you would like to buy a copy of either of the books that accompany this podcast please go to your online bookseller or visit Amazon:-Labour of Love - The Ultimate Guide to Being a Birth Partner - click here:-https://bit.ly/LabourofloveThe Art of Giving Birth - Five Key Physiological Principles - https://amzn.to/3EGh9dfPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth' - Black and White version https://amzn.to/3CvJXmOPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth'- Colour version https://amzn.to/3GknbPFYou can find all my classes and courses on my website - www.sallyannberesford.co.uk Follow me on Instagram @theultimatebirthpartner Book a 1-2-1 session with Sallyann - https://linktr.ee/SallyannBeresford Please remember that the information shared with you in this episode is solely based on my own personal experiences as a doula and the private opinions of my guests, based on their own experiences. Send a textPreparing for birth is only half the story. What happens in the weeks after your baby arrives can be just as challenging — and often more overwhelming than labour itself. That's why I teach the Relationship Circle in my antenatal classes, a practical way to map your support network, set boundaries, and clarify who does what.At the heart of the circle is Mother + Partner + Baby, because postpartum is a shared journey. Around that centre, the circles show both parents' families and friends, making it easy to see who will help, who needs boundaries, and where conversations are essential. In this episode, we talk about mapping your network, having important discussions during pregnancy about visits, practical help, and boundaries, and navigating common challenges — like the now very common “no kissing the baby” rule. Planning this way helps reduce overwhelm, prevent conflict, and protect your recovery, so you can focus on what matters most: your new family.Download Your Relationship Circles Postpartum Planning Workbook – 5-page printable PDF with templates, examples and questions to help you plan support and boundaries before baby arrives.A practical tool to map your postpartum plan with confidence and clarity. If you love the podcast and would like to support it, then please use the link to 'buy me a coffee' - https://bmc.link/sallyannberesfordIf you would like to buy a copy of either of the books that accompany this podcast please go to your online bookseller or visit Amazon:-Labour of Love - The Ultimate Guide to Being a Birth Partner - click here:-https://bit.ly/LabourofloveThe Art of Giving Birth - Five Key Physiological Principles - https://amzn.to/3EGh9dfPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth' - Black and White version https://amzn.to/3CvJXmOPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth'- Colour version https://amzn.to/3GknbPFYou can find all my classes and courses on my website - www.sallyannberesford.co.uk Follow me on Instagram @theultimatebirthpartner Book a 1-2-1 session with Sallyann - https://linktr.ee/SallyannBeresford Please remember that the information shared with you in this episode is solely based on my own personal experiences as a doula and the private opinions of my guests, based on their own experiences. Personally I never had any trouble being present, or taking part in the birth of my four children. In fact, I wouldn't trade the experience for anything, and would encourage any future fathers out there to be as much involved in the actual delivery as the mother and care givers will allow. That being said...there are a few of you, and you probably know who you are, who should never set foot in a delivery room. Recently, my nephews son was one of the later, who upon entering the delivery room was asked to sit on a chair in the back of the room, against the wall, Where, after viewing one of the final contractions promptly lost his breakfast, then... passed out! Thus!! the re-birth... if you will, of a song I originally recorded in the 90's for a friend of mine. And now,.. in 2026 for the rest of you to enjoy. Send a textLast week I talked about hypervigilance — what happens when a woman's nervous system doesn't feel safe in pregnancy, birth or postpartum. This week, I explore one of the most evidence-based ways to reduce it: continuity of carer.Continuity is not just about seeing the same service. It's about being known. It's about relationship. And decades of research show that when women receive continuity of midwifery care, outcomes improve across the board — including lower rates of preterm birth, fewer interventions, and better mental health outcomes. But this conversation goes beyond statistics.I look at why birth is relational and hormonal, why oxytocin depends on safety, and how familiarity in the room — whether from a midwife, a prepared partner, or a doula — can change the entire physiological landscape of labour.I also ask the uncomfortable question: if continuity is so well evidenced, why is it still treated as optional?Because safety in birth is often framed as machines and monitoring.Yet the evidence is clear.Safety is relationship.Safety is familiarity.Safety is being known. And continuity changes everything.Access the Discover Your North Star Course HereIf you love the podcast and would like to support it, then please use the link to 'buy me a coffee' - https://bmc.link/sallyannberesfordIf you would like to buy a copy of either of the books that accompany this podcast please go to your online bookseller or visit Amazon:-Labour of Love - The Ultimate Guide to Being a Birth Partner - click here:-https://bit.ly/LabourofloveThe Art of Giving Birth - Five Key Physiological Principles - https://amzn.to/3EGh9dfPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth' - Black and White version https://amzn.to/3CvJXmOPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth'- Colour version https://amzn.to/3GknbPFYou can find all my classes and courses on my website - www.sallyannberesford.co.uk Follow me on Instagram @theultimatebirthpartner Book a 1-2-1 session with Sallyann - https://linktr.ee/SallyannBeresford Please remember that the information shared with you in this episode is solely based on my own personal experiences as a doula and the private opinions of my guests, based on their own experiences. What happens when a personal trainer loses the ability to walk and discovers a power she never knew existed? In episode 248 of Joy Found Here, Isabelle Daikeler shares how spending over a decade unable to move without pain after giving birth forced her into complete surrender. That breaking point became her awakening—when her body began moving on its own for three days, when channeling started, and when she discovered what she calls our "third limb": an aspect of ourselves we've all forgotten we have.In This Episode, You Will Learn:(04:59) From Skeptic to Healer(07:18) The Car Crash That Changed Everything(10:30) Discovering Adaptogenic Medicine(15:13) Giving Birth and Losing Mobility(17:10) The Prayer of Surrender(22:00) Three Days of Somatic Unwinding(24:30) Discovering the "Third Limb"(30:44) Living with Inner Guidance(34:08) Your Body's Ancestral Wisdom(39:37) Inside the Harmonic Egg(44:48) Why Knowing is FreedomAs the founder of Authenticity – The Malibu Sound & Light Healing Center, Isabelle Daikeler guides individuals toward inner alignment through intuitive channeling and the revolutionary Harmonic Egg chamber. Her journey into this work wasn't sought—it found her. After giving birth to her son seventeen years ago, she spent over a decade unable to walk, stripped of her identity as a strong, athletic personal trainer. Broken and surrendering in prayer on the floor of her Kauai home, her connection to divine guidance—what she calls her third "limb"—awakened through three days of involuntary somatic unwinding and the beginning of channeling. Her devastating loss became the doorway to a different kind of strength: one built from the inside out.In this episode, Isabelle shares why surrender is the most essential step in healing, how our bodies hold ancestral wisdom and current-life lessons in every moment, and why the negative emotions we resist are actually our greatest teachers. She introduces the Harmonic Egg—a sacred geometry chamber using personalized sound and light frequencies to reset the nervous system and shift us from reactive to responsive. Whether you've spent years searching for answers or you're carrying pain that won't let go, Isabelle's message is clear: the wisdom you need is already within you, accessible here and now, and knowing—truly knowing—is the gateway to freedom.Connect with Isabelle Daikeler:WebsiteInstagramFacebookLet's Connect:WebsiteInstagram Hosted on Acast. Giving Birth to God's Promises Mother Teresa said, "I am a little pencil in the hand of a writing God who is sending a love letter to the world." Zechariah  "Zechariah and Elizabeth were righteous in God's eyes, careful to obey all of the Lord's commandments and regulations. They had no children because Elizabeth was unable to conceive, and they were both very old." - Luke‬ ‭1‬:‭6‬-‭7‬ ‭ "He will be a man with the spirit and power of Elijah. He will prepare the people for the coming of the Lord. He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and he will cause those who are rebellious to accept the wisdom of the godly." - Luke‬ ‭1‬:‭17‬ ‭ "Zechariah said to the angel, "How can I be sure this will happen? I'm an old man now, and my wife is also well along in years." - Luke‬ ‭1‬:‭18‬ ‭ Maybe some of you have said, "I'm too old to write a book now." Maybe you doubt the Lord's ability to birth a powerful message in and through you. Like John the Baptist, our books can help prepare people for the second coming of the Lord and also help turn the hearts of fathers to their children, along with causing the rebellious to accept the wisdom of the godly.  "He motioned for a writing tablet, and to everyone's surprise, he wrote, "His name is John." Instantly, Zechariah could speak again, and he began praising God." ‭‭- Luke‬ ‭1‬:‭63‬-‭64‬ ‭ As we come to believe what God wants to do in and through us, it could be that our words, like Zechariah's, are finally free to be released again through our pens.  Mary "Mary responded, "I am the Lord's servant. May everything you have said about me come true." And then the angel left her." - Luke‬ ‭1‬:‭38‬ ‭ Like Mary, in her "messy middle", we can say "Emmanuel, meet us where we are — in the messy middle, the doubt, and the longing. Teach us to trust like Mary and say YES even when we can't see the whole story."   Resources: If you're ready to take a step of faith and finally finish your book, we have a few ways we can help you.  1. Send us a textIn this episode, I'm joined by Fenja, who shares her freebirth story with honesty, depth, and clarity. At a time when freebirth is being widely discussed — and often misunderstood — Fenja's experience offers a grounded and much-needed perspective on what informed, conscious birth preparation can look like.Fenja speaks openly about the extensive work she did during pregnancy: building physiological understanding, engaging in emotional and mental preparation, and developing a deep trust in her body and decision-making. Her choices were not made lightly. They were rooted in knowledge, reflection, and personal responsibility.During her pregnancy, Fenja chose to hire a doula — not as someone to direct her birth, but as optional, woman-led support. When labour unfolded, she recognised that what she needed most was solitude and privacy, and she chose not to call her doula to the birth. This decision was hers alone, made in the moment, based on what felt right in her body and nervous system. With recent media coverage and coroner's reports attempting to suggest that doulas are influencing women to make unsafe decisions, Fenja's story provides an important counterpoint. It clearly demonstrates that women are capable of making informed, autonomous decisions about their own births, and that doulas do not make decisions for women — they support them, when and if that support is wanted. This episode is not about persuading anyone to freebirth. It is about respecting women's capacity to prepare deeply, think critically, and choose consciously.Fenja's story is thoughtful, grounded, and a deep reminder that birth choices cannot be reduced to headlines or assumptions. You can find Fenja and her work at helikraft.co.ukOn Instagram @heilkraftosteopathyIf you love the podcast and would like to support it, then please use the link to 'buy me a coffee' - https://bmc.link/sallyannberesfordIf you would like to buy a copy of either of the books that accompany this podcast please go to your online bookseller or visit Amazon:-Labour of Love - The Ultimate Guide to Being a Birth Partner - click here:-https://bit.ly/LabourofloveThe Art of Giving Birth - Five Key Physiological Principles - https://amzn.to/3EGh9dfPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth' - Black and White version https://amzn.to/3CvJXmOPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth'- Colour version https://amzn.to/3GknbPFYou can find all my classes and courses on my website - www.sallyannberesford.co.uk Follow me on Instagram @theultimatebirthpartner Book a 1-2-1 session with Sallyann - https://linktr.ee/SallyannBeresford Please remember that the information shared with you in this episode is solely based on my own personal experiences as a doula and the private opinions of my guests, based on their own experiences. Ten years later, Gloria welcomed her second baby. This time, she was married and working in the medical field herself. A combination of fever dreams and cocaine led to one of the greatest horror stories of all time. Robert Louis Stevenson was dying of tuberculosis when he wrote “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.” He almost trashed it, but after nine days of frantic writing he had defined the gothic novel and given us a metaphor for people with split personalities: Jekyll and Hyde. If you have a story you’d like me to take a deeper dive into and share, just DM me.
