There's a bit of a parental feel about this week's podcast. Two mums from Nottingham were categorised in a hospital computer system as having learning disabilities and, they say, received poor treatment as a result. Claire Whyte and Elizabeth Jones are autistic but their local NHS trust only has the ability to (inappropriately) categorise them as having a learning disability, because there is no neurodivergent box to tick on the system. They say they were spoken to in simplified language and had decisions about their care made without consulting them. As a result, they felt patronised and left out of their own maternity care. Presenter Emma Tracey speaks to them and we get a response from the NHS and the company, System C, who make the app. Emma also speaks to Jessica Slice, author of newly published and ironically titled book Unfit Parent: A Disabled Mother Challenges an Inaccessible World. In it she maintains that disabled people are unusually placed to have the skills to be parents. She says her life as someone with POTS and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, has made her more resilient, patient, tolerant of pain, and thinks disabled people shouldn't be written off as mums and dads ... and a whole lot more. Send us a textIn today's episode, I explore one of the most profound truths about birth - the fact that you are the creator of life. I dive into how modern maternity services undermine women's instincts, why doubt is a normal part of labour, and how the subconscious work of pregnancy is what truly saves women in the birth room.I explore why achieving a physiological birth in 2025 is about more than just having a birth plan. While a plan is a great starting point, it's not enough to guarantee a hands-off, natural birth experience in today's birth landscape. If you are preparing for birth and ready to reconnect with your instincts, I strongly recommend you join Discover Your North Star - my unique birth preparation course designed to help you do the inner work that will carry you through birth and beyond. It's aim is to empower you by transforming your mindset, and delve deep into your subconscious to reframe limiting beliefs and unlock your true potential. Unlike traditional antenatal programs that primarily focus on the physical aspects of childbirth, this course offers a holistic approach, addressing the mental and emotional facets of the journey into motherhood. You will engage in self-reflective exercises and mindset-shifting techniques, equipping you with the tools to navigate motherhood with confidence, clarity, and a profound sense of purpose. In addition, you will create a Birth Manifesto® - a personalised declaration that articulates your values, desires, and intentions for your birth experience. This powerful tool empowers you to:Clarify Your Vision: Define what a positive birth means to you, setting clear expectations.Enhance Communication: Effectively convey your preferences to your birth team, ensuring they understand and respect your wishes.Boost Confidence: Feel more in control and prepared, reducing anxiety and fostering a sense of empowerment.By crafting your Birth Manifesto®, you take an active role in shaping your birth journey, aligning it with your personal beliefs and aspirations. Learn more about the course here Read the blogIf you love the podcast and would like to support it, then please use the link to 'buy me a coffee' - https://bmc.link/sallyannberesfordIf you would like to buy a copy of either of the books that accompany this podcast please go to your online bookseller or visit Amazon:-Labour of Love - The Ultimate Guide to Being a Birth Partner - click here:-https://bit.ly/LabourofloveThe Art of Giving Birth - Five Key Physiological Principles - https://amzn.to/3EGh9dfPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth' - Black and White version https://amzn.to/3CvJXmOPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth'- Colour version https://amzn.to/3GknbPFYou can find all my classes and courses on my website - www.sallyannberesford.co.uk Follow me on Instagram @theultimatebirthpartner Book a 1-2-1 session with Sallyann - https://linktr.ee/SallyannBeresford Please remember that the information shared with you in this episode is solely based on my own personal experiences as a doula and the private opinions of my guests, based on their own experiences. Victoria's Secrets To Health & Happiness
Why recovering from an eating disorder was harder than giving birth

Victoria's Secrets To Health & Happiness

Hey loves, here's what today's episode is all about…I'm sitting here in my kitchen, little Koa on my boob (boobalicious, as I like to call it), needing a wee and feeling a bit hungry, but I thought—before I disturb her peaceful little nap—I'll record this episode. Because a question came up in my group coaching that I really wanted to talk about.Jan, one of my coaching clients, listened to my birth story episode and said something I mentioned really stood out to her. I had said that recovering from my eating disorder was harder than giving birth naturally, unmedicated, at home. She wanted me to elaborate on why.So today, I'm breaking it all down: why, despite the intensity of labor, recovery was the harder journey for me—and what that means for you if you're still in the thick of it. I'll share the deep identity shifts, the surrender, the trust, the fears, and the choice that comes with recovery in a way that birth simply didn't. Because here's the thing: giving birth was inevitable. Recovery wasn't.If you've ever felt like recovery is an impossible battle, this episode is for you. Because while recovery is hard, it's also temporary. Just like labor. And on the other side? Freedom. What I Talk About in This Episode: Why recovery was harder than giving birth (even though birth was incredibly painful) The key role of surrender and trust in both birth and healing The identity crisis I went through in recovery (and why it was actually a good thing!) Why birth is inevitable, but recovery is a choice—over and over again How letting go of control was the hardest (but most necessary) part of healing The importance of reframing beliefs every single day Why gaining weight was actually gaining life The three core values that guided me through both birth and recoverySome of My Favorite Quotes From This Episode: "Recovery is temporary, just like birth—but instead of hours, it's an extended period of temporary shit and pain." "I knew my body would birth my baby whether I liked it or not. Recovery, though? That was a choice I had to make over and over again." "Restriction is the quick fix. Freedom is the real work." "Beyond fear lies freedom—but you have to walk through the fear to get there." "My body is so much wiser than my mind ever was—whether in birth or in healing." "Surrender isn't weakness. It's the most powerful thing you can do." "I had to let go of the identity that was keeping me safe—but also keeping me stuck." "Gaining weight wasn't losing control. It was gaining my life back." "Recovery demands you rewire your beliefs every single day, not just once." "You can't wait until you feel ready. You take the leap, and your feelings catch up later."Let's Connect: Listen to my Birth Story & Interview with My Doula: https://victoriakleinsman.com/body-image/my-positive-home-birth-story-chat-with-my-doula/ Join My Group Coaching Program: https://victoriakleinsman.com/group-coaching/ Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/victoriakleinsmanofficial/
