Send us a Text Message.Step right into the eye of the storm with me, Jett, as we untangle the latest high-stakes drama from the classic soap, "Dallas." Grasp the fragile threads of fortune and fate that bind the Ewing family together – will solidarity or scandal reign supreme? We kick off with the aftershocks of the "Who Done It?" mystery, where allegiances are put to the test and Sue Ellen's predicament begs the question: can money buy freedom, or is it the root of all evil? And for those craving a slice of homespun wisdom, we answer a fan's letter about Val's charm, which proves that sometimes, the most unassuming characters steal the show.Buckle in for a bumpy ride as we recount Sue Ellen's spiral from high society to handcuffs, with only a hypnosis session standing between her and a conviction for J.R.'s shooting. But family ties in "Dallas" are as tangled as barbed wire, and the dynamics between Lucy and Mitch remind us that love's battlefield is fraught with its own perils, espeacially when Grand-daddy's little monster cant take no for an answer, love bombe anyone? It's not just about the money or the mansions – it's a power play with hearts and futures on the line. And as the chess pieces move, Cliff Barnes's political plays remind us that in the world of "Dallas," everyone's got an angle. In the grand finale of our soapy saga, betrayal takes center stage as Sue Ellen confronts the treachery lurking in her own backyard. But don't fret, dear listeners, for even amidst the backstabbing, "Dallas" serves up a Texas-sized lesson on resilience and redemption. Tune in for a narrative feast where family drama and financial independence collide, teaching us all to be the authors of our own destiny. And remember, when the dust settles, it's not just about surviving the storm – it's about learning to dance in the rain.
In this new Institute of Economic Affairs "In Conversation" interview, Tom Clougherty sits down with renowned conservative historian and commentator Simon Heffer. Heffer pulls no punches in his scathing critique of contemporary Conservative leadership and the party's civil war over Europe. He explores major challenges Britain faces - an aging population, pressures on the welfare state, and the need for pro-growth economic reforms. Heffer calls for reining in corporatism and state overreach while incentivizing hard work and self-reliance. He advocates transitioning from a welfare state to a "welfare society" rooted in Victorian values of self-help, making this a must-watch discussion on the future of British politics and economics.

I've been eagerly awaiting this interview for some time, having watched the Heffer family develop the small horseracing form guide Winning Form into the 6,000-plus staffed giant Hollywoodbets. A formidable brand, the company has naming rights on four major racecourses in South Africa; and many of its top races, including the most famous of all, the Durban July. Also, Hollywoodbets sponsor its hometown Sharks Rugby and Dolphins Cricket and the Durban stadiums where they play, plus Dundalk Racecourse in Ireland and, the highest profile of all, English Premier League team Brentford FC. Its Hollywood Syndicates reinvest heavily in SA's racing industry, keeping over a hundred horses in training. This interview with Devin Heffer brings together this inspirational story's threads that go back to a small entrepreneur, his father Owen, whose disruptive endeavours delivered the dream result. - Alec Hogg

Britain in the 1840s should have been, observes Simon Heffer, a time of great social improvement. Instead it was a country that was beset by poverty, unrest, assassination attempts on young Queen Victoria and her Prime Minister, and fears of revolution. Yet just forty years later, it was as if none of that had ever happened. It had become a prosperous and progressive nation, transformed by advances not only in industrialization, but also in politics, science, religion, and education. That Britain had become such a society was not an accident, but the result of intelligent and directed purpose The story of that purpose, and what it wrought, is the subject of Heffer's book High Minds: The Victorians and the Birth of Modern Britain (Pegasus Books, 2022). It is an investigation not simply of political, social, or cultural change, but of a change of mind—by which I mean not merely changing ideas, like changing clothes from season to season, but of changing the way things are seen Simon Heffer is an eminent British journalist, essayist, historian, and author of numerous books, including lives of the 19th century Scottish philosopher Thomas Carlyle and 20th century politician Enoch Powell, and a series of histories of Britain of which High Minds is the first. For Further Investigation In our wide-ranging conversation we touched on topics covered in previous episodes of the podcast. If you haven't already, then listen to Jonathan Rose talk about the intellectual life of the British working class; or Will Hay describe the importance of an obscure Prime Minister. High Minds was published in 2013 in Britain, but is only now being published in the United States by Pegasus Books. It has been followed by The Age of Decadence–A History of Britain: 1880-1914, which was confusingly published in the United States before High Minds. Staring at God: Britain in the Great War has not been published in America; you'll need to order it from Britain along with the good Cadbury's chocolate they keep for themselves. The final volume in the series, now being written, will end the story in 1939. Al Zambone is a historian and the host of the excellent podcast Historically Thinking. This is a ‘word in season' for so many of us. Rachael took us to John 20:19-22, pointing out when the disciples were in lockdown; fearful, grieving, uncertain of their future. And Jesus' presence made all the difference! He gave them peace, purpose and power as they enjoyed his presence. Just what we need too! We pray this message will bless you.
The implied answer to the titular question of All Bullshit and Lies? (Oxford University Press 2020) is no, it's not. In this book, subtitled Insincerity, Irresponsibility, and the Judgment of Untruthfulness, Chris Heffer argues that to analyze untruthfulness, we need a framework which goes beyond these two kinds of speech acts, bullshitting and lying. With his TRUST framework (Trust-related Untruthfulness in Situated Text), Heffer analyzes untruthfulness which includes irresponsible attitudes towards truth, like dogma and distortion, as well as manipulations of the putatively true, like withholding information or misleading. He considers not only epistemic responsibility but moral culpability, taking up real-world cases such as presidential tweets and sloganeering. The book draws on work in philosophy of language, linguistics, and epistemology, along with discourse analysis, psychology, and sociology to provide a flexible framework which can help cut through increasing epistemic partisanship, believing for the sake of affiliation rather than reason. Malcolm Keating is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Yale-NUS College. His research focuses on Sanskrit philosophy of language and epistemology. He is the author of Language, Meaning, and Use in Indian Philosophy (Bloomsbury Press, 2019) and host of the podcast Sutras (and stuff). Learn more about your ad choices. Thomas Taylor and I discuss his new novel, MALAMANDER, and writing creepy, atmospheric monster stories for children. We also talk quite a lot about ghosts, flying saucers, and the parts of being a writer that strike us as being a bit magical. And yes, I ask him about designing the UK cover for HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER'S STONE, but we talk far more about how being an artist influences his writing and vice versa. And, as a bonus, we talk about designing comics. Thomas Taylor is a children's writer and illustrator. He studied at Anglia Ruskin University and attended the Norwich School of Art and Design. Then he spent three years at art school in Cambridge. After finishing his education he found his first job at Heffer’s Children’s Bookshop. He has written and illustrated several picture books, starting with George and Sophie's Museum Adventure in 1999, and has two novels, Haunters and Dan of the Dead. The first one was published in May, 2012 by The Chicken House and the last one was published on 1 June 2012 by Bloomsbury Publishing PLC. Dan of the Dead sequel named Dan and the Caverns of Bone was issued in June, 2013. The book The Pets You Get with his illustrations won the Stockport Schools’ Book Award in 2013 (early years category) and also the Oldham Brilliant Books Award. He also painted the cover art for the first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

A tamer version of Ren and Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life was window into what it's like to be an immigrant wallaby living with your cow friend. Rocko, Heffer, and Spunky kept our eyes glued to the screen for countless afternoons in the 90s. What did it teach us? We still can't figure it out.
It's been a full year since BAM has done a Rocko episode. We're back with one focused on Rocko, Heffer and Filburt. We talk about "Wimp on the Barbie" "Sailing the Seven Zzz's" and "Fish 'N' Chumps". We also talk about Nick Studios, Rocko's place in the Nicktoons lineup and the Bighead's sex life. A very funny episode. BAM IS BACK!!! Speaking and writing correct English are the hallmark of an intelligent person. No one who cares about language wants to be caught splitting an infinitive or muddling up ‘infer’ and ‘imply’. Which is why the bestseller lists are regularly topped by books on 'good' English by the likes of Daily Mail polemicist Simon Heffer and Today programme presenter John Humphrys - both of whom defend the motion in this debate from 5th March 2014. Taking them on were Mary Beard, Professor of Classics at Cambridge, and Oliver Kamm, top commentator at The Times. No one would dare describe either as lacking in grey matter or being insensitive to good English. So why the disagreement with Heffer and Humphrys? Because people on their side of the argument believe that our language can take care of itself, and that it certainly doesn’t need a bunch of self-appointed rule-book sticklers to make others feel insecure about how they speak and write. Good style matters, they argue, and can be taught but the pedants should stop confusing their pet peeves with ‘correct’ English. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Tom grew up loving two things: punk rock and comedy. He pursued both until he voiced Heffer the cow in Rocko's Modern Life. Then he gave life to a sponge in squarepants, and the world of cartoons has never been the same. And for that, Tom thanks punk rock and comedy.

Ashley Baxter is back on Unfinished Business this week and we start the show by talking about why she started a podcast with some other fella. We discuss how businesses should be authentic on Twitter and if a brand can justifiably spend 45 days planning a tweet about cheese. (Mmmm, cheese.) We round off this week by talking about how working with other people can affect your fitness and diet and why working from from home might be the best thing for some people. And let’s not forget Ashley Baxter’s Scottish Slang Word of the Week. “Heffer.” Thanks to our sponsors this week, they were Vanamco’s DeviceLab, Big Board and Perch. As always, you can support Unfinished Business by supporting them.

As part of BBC Radio 3's Sound of Cinema, a week of essays written and presented by historian and columnist Simon Heffer on classic British taboo-breaking films which depicted a society changed profoundly by war.In this first programme Heffer explores the Britain depicted by director Robert Hamer in what he describes as his 'stunning film noir' "It Always Rains on Sunday"."The period between 1945 and 1955," says Heffer, "was when the British cinema started to grow up. The films reflected a world that existed rather than one self-appointed moral arbiters wished existed. The treatment of class became radically different. Hamer brought a mathematician's precision and a poet's touch to his work. He was the most original directorial talent working in Britain, whatever fans of Michael Powell and David Lean might argue. He combined acute visual sense with a regard for and an understanding of the English language, matched by none of his rivals."The cinema of the 30s was nakedly and unashamedly escapist in a way that the cinema of the late 40s and early 50s - in an age of lost innocence and social upheaval - simply couldn't be. Taboos it had left untouched could no longer be ignored if film was to remain relevant. Families had broken up because of bereavement and adultery. Subjects considered unsuitable for a cinema audience - marital breakdown , criminality, revenge, failings in the justice system, and disability - suddenly became popular with British screenwriters and studios. Social realism was the order of the day. And in "It Always Rains on Sunday" from 1947, Hamer depicts a gritty world of shrewish housewives, spivs, chancers, petty thugs and avuncular but determined policemen who patrolled the streets of London's tough Bethnal Green district.
