This 154th interview in my podcast series features Helen M., from London, England. Helen tracks her nearly three years of sobriety as more than 1000 days in AA, experienced the one-day-at-at-time. Though she grew up in a home in which neither of her parents were alcoholic, Helen suffered mistreatment at the hands of her two sisters. To cope, she found the emotion-numbing relief that alcohol provided early in her childhood. With the die cast for an adolescence of drinking and other addictions, Helen drank herself into the throes of alcohol abuse by her early twenties. By then, the inevitable consequences of daily drinking took shape in the form of lost jobs, ruined relationships, and physical maladies that are all too common to the disease of alcoholism. Hitting bottoms along the way, Helen finally found the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous in 2018. But getting to AA was only half the battle as her desire to drink continued to take her down. In a moment of utter despair fraught with failure to grasp the Program, Helen's path of salvation from drink was illuminated in September 2021. She was done drinking and proceeded to work the Program as suggested, even during the early days of Covid when she became meeting-maker on several Zoom AA meetings per day. Helen's passion and enthusiasm for AA recovery is infectious as she describes the gifts of the Program she has enjoyed. Working the Steps, studying the Big Book, having and being as sponsor, spiritual awareness, and frequent service work all bolsters Helen's place in the Program. Her story bears witness to AA members in their early years of the power of the program and reminds those with many years or decades that the simple path of faith and action is still blessed beyond question by a Higher Power. So please enjoy the next hour or so of AA Recovery Interviews with my friend and AA sister, Helen M. If you've enjoyed my AA Recovery Interviews series and my Big Book Podcast, have a listen to Lost Stories of the Big Book, 30 Original Stories Missing from the 3rd and 4th Editions of Alcoholics Anonymous. It's an engaging audiobook I narrated to bring these stories to life for AA members who've never seen them. These timeless testimonials were originally cut to make room for newer stories in the 3rd and 4th Editions. But their vitally important messages of hope are as meaningful today as when they were first published. Many listeners will hear these stories for the first time. Lost Stories of the Big Book is available on Audible, Amazon, and iTunes. It's also available as a Kindle book and in Paperback from Amazon if you'd like to read along with the audio. I also invite you to check out my latest audio book, “Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How More Than One Hundred Men Have Recovered From Alcoholism”. This is the word-for-word, cover-to-cover reading of the First Edition of the Big Book, published in 1939. It's a comfortable, meaningful, and engaging way to listen to the Big Book anytime, anyplace. Have a free listen at Audible, i-Tunes, or Amazon.

Sunday Worship and Healing Service - November 7, 2021
During this episode, Dr. Helen M. Hazi puts recent challenges to curriculum content into an historical perspective and offers suggestions for responding to efforts to censor instructional materials. A major focus of Dr. Hazi's scholarship has been the intersection of law and policy with educational practice. She helps to distinguish what teachers can do to minimize the possibility of challenges to their instructional choices and what is the responsibility of principals, superintendents, and school boards. Although the information conveyed cannot be considered formal legal advice, the ideas presented provide a framework for thinking about the troubling issue of censorship.

If you’ve felt that disconnect when getting moving again after your cancer treatment — your heart wants you to be where you were before, your head has reservations about getting started, but your body is like, “Hey! Kinda been through some stuff over here!” — and feeling frustrated that exercise doesn’t look like you thought it would, then you’re going to love this month’s series on fitness in survivorship. Over the next 5 weeks I’m going to introduce you to some great options to get moving again that you may not have even considered, and flipping the idea of exercise from something daunting to something fun that you want to come back to again and again. Today I’m joined by USA Pickleball Ambassador, founder of Breakthrough Community Sports, Inc., owner of Pickleball 4 Life, LLC, senior athlete, and breast cancer survivor, Helen M. White. She believes in the power of playing sports for all and is passionate about sharing the joys of pickleball with others. Get ready to be inspired by Helen this week and head out to try some pickleball! We’re diving into: Helen’s own breast cancer journey with invasive ductal carcinoma at age 64 The fun way she took control over her frequent radiation treatment to help her get through it with a positive mindset How Helen worked through the anger she felt around her diagnosis and moved into a positive, uplifted space Her experience with APBI (accelerated partial breast irradiation) The “gotcha” Helen didn’t expect after treatment and how she managed it Her favorite tip for making frequent blood draws easier How Helen and I each weighed the pros and cons of AI (aromatase inhibitor) treatment and what declining it has meant for us Possible side effects of AI treatment and how movement can benefit you if you are affected by them The key diet change that occurred for Helen as a result of her cancer journey Where pickleball got its name (no, it has nothing to do with actual pickles!) and why it’s been a life-saver for Helen during her recovery (and it’s a COVID friendly sport, too!) The feature will roll out in the coming weeks...“‘These messages will connect people to COVID-19 myths debunked by the World Health Organization including ones we’ve removed from our platform for leading to imminent physical harm,’ Guy Rosen, Facebook’s vice president of integrity, said in a blog post.”– CNBC, April 26, 2020Two things are quite apparent in this move. One, Facebook doesn’t believe the general public is smart enough (or worthy of the freedom) to research its own information. And two, they are invested in a single point of view narrative with no intention of allowing opposing viewpoints. It is beyond arrogant to believe it okay to mandate what is acceptable information to consume. It is also reprehensible to bully people into acquiescing to your point of view. Facebook is doing both with its rollout of “warnings” about what people like. They are censoring – and, in fact, facilitating the expungement – of information that will allow people the opportunity to decide for themselves, and now they are attempting to intimidate those who don’t agree with their preferred narrative. This is – and I mean this literally – the institution of Orwell’s “Newspeak”:“Newspeak is the language of Oceania, a totalitarian superstate that is the setting of George Orwell's dystopian 1949 novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. To meet the ideological requirements of English Socialism (INGSOC) in Oceania, the ruling Party created Newspeak,[1] a controlled language of simplified grammar and restricted vocabulary, meant to limit the freedom of thought – personal identity, self-expression, free will – that threatens the ideology of the régime of Big Brother and the Party, who have criminalized such concepts into thought crime, as contradictions of INGSOC orthodoxy.”Is this not exactly what Facebook is doing? They are deciding – for you – what is harmful and what is not; what is truth and what is not; what is acceptable and what is not. They are dictating what the truth is, even as relevant questions abound on the issue of COVID-19 and how the government has handled the event. This is the very antithesis of freedom, by definition.Facebook will hide behind their stance that because they are a privately owned company they have the right to execute censorship on such a grotesque level. But because their product has an extraordinary effect on shaping our cultural narratives, I suggest they are bound by laws that safeguard our First Amendment rights to freedom of speech, freedom to redress government, and freedom of assembly, titrated to the 21 Century modes of communication. To that extent, it is without a doubt – and would be extremely hard to argue otherwise (although I am not about to be as hypocritical as Facebook as to say only my opinion counts) – that Facebook is:• Infringing on every user's constitutional free speech right by way of filtering information to only a preferred narrative (censorship)• Infringing on every user's constitutional right to redress their government by stifling opposing viewpoints to the government-issued narrative (censorship)• And infringing on every user's constitutional right to freely assemble by way of intimidating people into demurring their true thoughts on a subject for fear of being openly ridiculed (read: warned) by the Facebook “community standards” thugs.Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines “monopoly” thusly:“...exclusive ownership through legal privilege, command of supply, or concerted action; exclusive possession or control; a commodity controlled by one party...”In that definition, they use an analogy by Helen M. Lynd that applies, “No country has a monopoly on morality or truth.” This necessarily needs to be true of social media behemoths as well. No all-encompassing social media entity has a monopoly on morality or truth. This is especially applicable to Facebook and Google (the former of which owns Instagram and the latter of which owns YouTube), who both have a disproportionate stranglehold on information on the Internet. It is well past time that the US Department of Justice takes action against Facebook and Google in the form of antitrust lawsuits meant to break their monopoly over information on the Internet. The precedent for this move comes in the break-up of the Bell System in 1982.We, the American people, are at a moment in time – boots on the ground real-time – when Facebook and Google are making a grab at our freedom to acquire information, all under the emotional guise that they are protecting the public interest. They are not protecting the public interest. They are stealing freedom from the people. It is time that we stand up to this tyranny before Newspeak is commonplace, and freedom is redefined.

Judith R. Milner, MD, MEd, SpecEd, joins Lorenzo Norris, MD, host of the MDedge Psychcast and editor in chief of MDedge Psychiatry, to talk about steps psychiatrists can take to address the mental health needs of people traumatized by a natural disaster, such as Hurricane Dorian survivors. In This Week in Psychiatry, Katherine Epstein, MD, and Helen M. Farrell, MD, write about miracle cures in psychiatry. You can read the article online by clicking here or you can access the downloadable PDF by clicking here. Time Stamps: This Week in Psychiatry (02:37) Interview with Dr. Milner (06:33) Dr. RK with Dr. Renee Kohanski (39:31) Dr. Milner is a general and child and adolescent psychiatrist in private practice in Everett, Wash. She has traveled across the globe with various groups in an effort to alleviate some of the suffering caused by war and natural disaster. Don’t miss the “Dr. RK” segment by Renee Kohanski, MD, who discusses the extent to which people choose what is important and meaningful. Dr. Kohanski, a member of the MDedge Psychiatry Editorial Advisory Board, is a psychiatrist in private practice in Mystic, Conn. Show notes by Jacqueline Posada, MD, consultation-liaison psychiatry fellow with the Inova Fairfax Hospital/George Washington University program in Falls Church, Va. STAGES OF NATURAL DISASTERS Devastation stage During the devastation stage, the primary objectives are giving basic first aid and attending to the sick, searching for those who are missing, and getting people safely into shelters. Psychological first aid (PFA) is the primary form of mental health treatment. PFA addresses basic needs by helping people find shelter, food, water; assisting with communication; reuniting families; and conducting case management to address acute needs. Normalization stage The normalization stage continues for several months after the disaster and includes the honeymoon phase, in which people are grateful to have survived and the community unites to rebuild; and then the disillusionment phase, during which frustrations and hopelessness arise as communities and individuals realize the limits of disaster assistance. Psychiatric disorders are likely to develop during the normalization stage. Acute stress disorder (ASD) typically occurs 3-30 days after the event with cardinal symptoms such as hyperarousal, hypervigilance, and negative cognitions that affect relationships. Medical professionals should monitor for development of chronic disorders such as PTSD, major depressive disorder, and anxiety disorders. Prolonged stressors, such as living in a damaged home, increase the risk of depression and anxiety. Those with preexisting vulnerabilities – such as past traumatic experiences from physical, sexual, or emotional abuse; previous natural disasters; or other chronic stressors of poverty and medical illness – are at greatest risk of developing a trauma-related disorder after a natural disaster. The normalization stage is a critical period to use the “training the trainer” model. Because many locations do not have a surplus of mental health clinicians, psychiatrist volunteers can train local individuals to provide services. For example, mental health professionals can train the trainers to recognize symptoms of common psychiatric conditions and to provide basic treatment. Manualized therapies are useful but require in-depth training. Other simple modalities, such as deep breathing, visualization, and relaxation techniques, can be useful. Acceptance stage During the acceptance stage, rates of persistent PTSD range from 25% to 40%. Ongoing therapy is helpful, especially group therapy, which is an effective use of resources. Facilitation of group therapy can be taught while training the trainers. If a mental health professional volunteers and participates in the training the trainers’ model, there must be follow-up, which should include providing intellectual support and refresher courses, evaluating how training is being used, and checking up on patients/clients who have received services. Predisaster advice: Do not go it alone. Affiliate with a group that has a plan, so that your presence on the scene does not add to the chaos. Postdisaster advice: Be aware of compassion fatigue and take time away from volunteerism. Recognize signs of secondary traumatic stress. Counsel volunteers upon their return from the disaster site. https://keywebco.com/blogs/news/understanding-how-seo-works Understanding How SEO Works Tips 0 comments Understanding how SEO works is important to every business. marketing gif As a marketer, whether you specialize in SEO or not, you're going to use it one way or another. I can say it is a lot to learn and you have to do it. Learning and applying it to help your website, blog and or store gain content rank. It's a tricky thing, SEO. One day you can use long tail keywords to drive traffic, the next you receive large spikes of traffic without even knowing what caused it. Then you try and figure it out. You definitely need to get an understanding of the basics. It can feel a bit bewildering trying to establish all the potential factors in play and see how it works. Shopify has a great YouTube that explains SEO is short for Search Engine Optimization and it's a measurable, repeatable process that is used to send signals to search engines that your pages are worth showing in Google's index. In this video Helen M. Overland from Search Engine People examines SEO basics and what it means for your business. E-commerce SEO 101: What is SEO? Video Transcript So what is SEO? SEO is short for Search Engine Optimization, and there is nothing really mystical about it. You might have heard a lot about SEO and how it works, but basically what it is is a measurable, repeatable process that is used to send signals to search engines that your pages are worth showing in Google's index. Basically, Google uses a complex mathematical formula called an algorithm to give a score to every website and every search people to do in Google to figure out which website should rank best for what people are looking for. Think of the algorithm like a collection of empty buckets. One bucket gives you a score for the quality of your site, one bucket gives you a score for how many sites link to you, one bucket gives you a score for how people trust you. Your job is to fill up more buckets in the algorithm than any other website. You can affect your search engine ranking by having the highest score in terms of quality of your site, of having the highest score in terms of the authority of your website, of having the highest score in terms of the most trusted store for that search that people are looking for. The good thing is that there are hundreds of buckets, and for every single one of these buckets these scores put together in the algorithm to figure out where you rank is an opportunity for you to fill it up and rank better. So optimizing your site for search results really means getting the highest score in as many of these points as you can. Now, some buckets are worth more than others, and the three main buckets that you need to be aware of for search rankings are quality, trust, and authority. So quality: what Google is trying to measure when they're trying to figure out what sites should rank is offering something valuable or unique or interesting to googles searchers. For example good content - if you are selling t-shirts and you are using the same description that every other t-shirt seller is using on their website then you are not offering anything unique to Google's searchers. Even though your t-shirts might look pretty cool, the content is the same as everybody else's, so Google has no way of telling that your t-shirts or your t-shirt site is better than anybody else's. Instead, offer people interesting content. For example: offer them the ability to personalize their t-shirt. Give them information on how to wash it. What's the thread count? Is it stain resistant? Is this something you should wear in the summer or is it heavier for winter? Give people information, or even be more creative. Get people to share pictures of themselves wearing the t-shirt. Create a community of people who are interested in your product. Get a famous person to wear it and share that picture online. Do something different, do something unique. We buy so much of our food. As a result, we have next to no connection to what we put into our bodies. Where did it come from, how was it growing, what was next to it, what was the weather like, what did we have to go through to get it. The forest is a natural grocery store. We can forage leafy greens, berries, mushrooms, root vegetables, eat meat that we harvested ourselves and we know exactly where it all came from. There is now a story that goes with that food that makes you more connected to the landscape and more appreciative of the calories that will become your own body. Kelly came on to discuss all sorts of things we can forage from our forests. Best two books for foraging food in western Canada according to Kelly: Plants of the Western Boreal Forest & Aspen parkland by Johnson, Kershaw, MacKinnon and Pojar Mushrooms of Western Canada by Helen M.E. I hope wherever she is, she is having an excellent! http://www.providencejournal.com/breaking-news/content/20140408-nonnie-the-cashier-at-the-kingston-cvs-has-died-she-was-known-for-saying-have-an-excellent.ece

Guanyin Bodhisattva China, Yunnan province Size: 9 1/4 in. x 4 11/16 in. x 2 5/8 in. (48.9 cm x 11.91 cm x 6.67 cm) Museum purchase with funds provided by the Helen M. Towle Bequest 1941:83 Buddhist sculptures from southwestern China, like this example in the Museum’s collection, are exceptionally rare, especially when datable by inscription. The graceful standing figure can be identified as Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion, because of the figure of the Buddha Amitabha in the crown. The character “Da” has been carved on each foot, which indicates that it was made for the royal family of the Dali Kingdom. The extensive inscription on the back of the garment reveals that the Emperor Duan Zhengxing paid for this sculpture to be made for his sons, to ensure their prosperity and the continuation of the family line. It is interesting to note that no esoteric or philosophical ideas of Buddhism were invoked by these patrons.
