Sam’s father had to flee for his life during a military coup. With the sudden loss of income, the family could no longer afford the crucial medicine that kept Sam’s brother alive. Seething at God, Sam thought, What have we done to deserve this? A follower of Jesus heard about the family’s troubles. Finding he had enough money to cover the medicine, he bought a supply and took it to them. The life-saving gift from a stranger had a profound impact. “This Sunday, we will go to this man’s church,” his mother declared. Sam’s anger began to subside. And eventually, one by one, each member of the family would put their faith in Jesus. When James wrote about the necessity of a lifestyle of integrity accompanying a profession of faith in Christ, he singled out the need to care for others. “Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food,” James wrote. “If one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?” (2:16–17). Our actions demonstrate the genuineness of our faith. Significantly, those actions can influence the faith-choices of others. In Sam’s case, he became a pastor and church-planter. Eventually he would call the man who helped his family “Papa Mapes.” He now knew him as his spiritual father—the one who showed them the love of Jesus.

It's not safe for men to show emotions in this lifetime. We're working on it but it's still not safe. Safety is necessary for ANYONE at ANYTIME to be vulnerable. I've hosted men's groups and interviewed many men — the theme is always the same — “Quit crying or I'll give you something to cry about, don't be a pussy, man up, toughen up.” Male conditioning in our culture is homophobic, dissmissive, and insensitive. In this episode Sam Sarver, drummer, mailman, record-collector enthusiast, and long-time friend since college discuss male emotions and sensitivities and what happens when we don't allow ourselves to feel feelings. In Sam's case, his mental health was suffering and so he chose to quit drinking. He'll tell us his story and motivations for wanting to grow and do better as a husband and father of a daughter, as well as his relationship to drinking and having sex at an early age. We'll hear about his sexual upbringing and how Catholic religion played a role and how he is starting to think about sex education as a father raising a daughter. 125. Understanding Inbound Commerce and the Buyer's Journey

Monetization Nation Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 9, 2021 25:55

Welcome back to another episode of Monetization Nation with Sam Mallikarjunan. In the previous episode, we discussed how to market ourselves and how to get a job with our dream company. Sam shared a creative strategy he used to get a  recruiter from his dream company to contact him within 3 hours and 26 minutes.     Sam is the co-author of the book, Inbound Commerce: How to Sell Better Than Amazon, which is ironically the number one bestseller in its category on Amazon. In today's episode, we'll discuss inbound commerce and the buyer's journey.    Inbound Commerce   In Sam's book, he explores e-commerce applications of inbound marketing and emphasizes the importance of using content and engagement to create likable marketing.    Inbound marketing is a business system that attracts customers by creating valuable content and experiences targeted to them (Source: HubSpot). Inbound marketing attracts customers while outbound marketing interrupts them through methods such as sales calls or ads on social media.    “What if instead of being as obnoxious as possible, marketers actually tried to create experiences that people wanted to have? Instead of interrupting people, could you create something that drew them to you instead of cold calling? For example, could you create content that educated them?” Sam said.    Sam first discovered HubSpot because he was drawn to their educational content. A great way to get customers is through the methods of inbound commerce. We should be creating value our customers will naturally want instead of imposing products or services on them they aren't really interested in. Our content, services, and products should bring our customers to us, not the other way around.    “If you just cold call people, you're not going to be nearly as effective as if you're really good at educating them and creating that inbound experience to bring them to you,” Sam said.   Sam saw a survey in which marketers were rated as less trustworthy than car salesmen, politicians, and lobbyists. This is the exact opposite of what we want to see. Customers should feel they can trust us. Inbound marketing forces us to create products or services our customers will actually value. This will build trust and strengthen customer relations.   Jeff Bezos, founder, and CEO of Amazon said,    "One thing I learned within the first couple of years of starting a company is that inventing and pioneering involve a willingness to be misunderstood for long periods of time. One of the early examples of this is customer reviews. Someone wrote to me and said, 'You don't understand your business. You make money when you sell things. Why do you allow these negative customer reviews?' And when I read that letter, I thought, we don't make money when we sell things. We make money when we help customers make purchase decisions."   This is a core goal of inbound marketing. We need to create an experience that our customers like and that provides them value. We need to create an experience that builds trust. The goal needs to be about helping our customers make a decision on their stages of the buyer's journey, and then continue to drive their repurchase cycle.    The Buyer's Journey   When I asked Sam to share one of his monetization strategies, he said it is to understand the marketing funnel and the buyer's journey.    We have to solve problems for each of the different stages of the buyer's journey: awareness, consideration, and the decision stage. We can't only focus on building awareness and staying dialed in on website traffic and leads. We also can't only focus on the final purchase decision. We need to have the entire buyer's journey in mind if we want to optimize conversions and gain lifetime customers. One of the biggest mistakes Sam sees is people getting too focused on only one part of the marketing funnel.    To really understand what our customers' needs are at each stage of their journey, we need to do research. We have to take the time to look at the data and combine that with analysis to get an accurate understanding of who our customers are.    The first stage of the marketing funnel or the buyer's journey is awareness. Building awareness should be focused on inbound marketing, not outbound. To raise awareness, we shouldn't be cold calling or constantly using targeted ads necessarily. We want our customers to come to us because they are interested in what we have to offer. We should be doing research and getting good at providing valuable education for our consumers. Throughout the consideration stage and decision stage, we should educate our customers—it should be a continuous cycle of education.   “Once [customers] buy from you, it means they have purchased one thing from you, but they are back in the awareness and research [stage of] a buyer's journey for whatever they're going to buy next,” Sam said.    If we want to gain customer retention, we need to remember that a one-time buyer is not a customer. They should go back to the first stage of the buyer's journey, and we need to treat them as if they are a first-time buyer again. We need to educate them all over again.    Sam explained that if we make the incentive for our products about price, Amazon is going to “kick our butt.” But, if we make it about a continuous cycle of education and awareness, we'll win customer lifetime value.    A Challenger's Mindset   Part of focusing on the buyer's journey includes having a challenger's mindset. If we don't adapt to tectonic shifts, we're not going to make it, and so it is essential we constantly challenge our methods and systems to make sure we are doing things in the best way possible. Sam advises we challenge our core principles frequently.   “I can be a $100 billion company today, but it is not guaranteed that I'm a company at all five years from now,” Sam said. “Create that challenger mindset inside your own organization. . . . [Ask yourself,] is there anything I don't know about my customer that somebody could create value for them in a way that I wasn't expecting and kill [my] company really, really fast?”   We need to make sure we are always providing value for our customers because if someone else solves a problem for our customers that we didn't know about, we'll have lost a portion of our audience.    We need to make sure we are researching every part of the buyer's journey all the time. We need to be looking at the data, analyzing it, pulling insights out of it, and then making a change where necessary. If we can adapt to the changes in our market and the changes in our customers' needs, we'll be much more likely to survive in the business world.    Millennials make up about 30% of the American population and they are the most diverse generational cohort in US history (Source: Deloitte Insights). Not only are they diverse, but they have constant, changing needs. They are constantly looking for new, fast, and easy ways to solve their problems, and if someone solves their needs before we do, we'll lose their loyalty. One-third of adults aged 23-38 are quick to drop a brand that doesn't meet expectations (Source: Brightpearl). We need to make sure we are quick to meet their changing needs.    If we have a challenger's mindset, we will be more likely to solve a potential problem, before an actual problem arises. This will help our businesses stay ahead of the game and increase our customer lifetime value.    Key Takeaways   Thank you so much Sam for sharing your stories and knowledge with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode:   Instead of interrupting our customers through methods such as sales calls or ads on social media, we should attract them by creating valuable content and experiences targeted to them. We need to have the entire buyer's journey in mind if we want to gain a lifetime customer.  Our buyer's journey should be a continuous cycle of providing education and value.  A one-time buyer is not a customer. They go back to the first stage of the buyer's journey after they have made a single purchase.  We need to have a challenger's mindset. If we don't adapt to tectonic shifts, we're not going to make it. It is essential we frequently challenge our business methods and systems.    Connect with Sam   If you enjoyed this interview and want to learn more about Sam or connect with him, you can find him on his LinkedIn or visit his website, www.onescreen.ai.    Want to be a Better Digital Monetizer?   Did you like today's episode? Sam currently lives in Singapore with her husband and two children and has a regular monthly column for Top Sante magazine. In Sam's brand new book - The Midlife Method, she explores why it is so much harder to lose weight as we get older and what we can do about it. Rather than focusing exclusively on restricted eating, as so many diets do, Sam guides us through her 'method' for midlife weight loss based on extensive research into the specific physiological changes that occur in our middle years. She answers the questions that she herself asked when, in her forties the weight suddenly started accumulating around the middle: Why is this happening to me? Wha am I eating that isn't helping?  What foods should I be eating more of? How do calories fit into the equation? How much and what kinds of exercise are most beneficial? What other lifestyle changes do I need to make? In her book - The Midlife Method, Sam includes more than 80 delicious recipes for breakfast, lunch and family-friendly dinners, along with an easy 4-week plan. The Midlife Method shows how combining Light Days (active calorie restriction via calorie-controlled recipes) and Regular Days (focused on eating well-balanced, nutrient-dense food) can bring about healthy and sustainable weight loss. But Sam shares how we don't want to lose weight as we get older, we want to feel great too, that is where The Midlife Method Healthy Habits come in. Be Love

This week we are starting our NEW SEASON and NEW SERIES called Be Strong.  We are bringing you all new guests, all new interviews, and each month we will be diving into a new topic this fall.    This month we are focusing on the first phrase of our lunchbox note, which says, “BE STRONG.” We will be interviewing those who have been through hard circumstances and they will teach us their definition of what it means to be strong.    Today we are interviewing Sam Collier, sought after speaker, pastor, author, podcaster, who shares his story of how he was abandoned as a baby and later meets his birth mother on the Steve Harvey show of all places. We talk about disappointment, what happens when things don’t work out the way we think they should, how to surrender, and what it means to accept our past, present, and future, no matter the trials we have been through.    In Sam’s new book: A Greater Story, all of us are given permission to embrace our stories, and know that just because they may start out hard, it doesn’t mean we can’t embrace all the parts and find freedom in every area of our lives.    You will be captivated by Sam’s story, but also his ability to get all of us to make amends with ourselves and realize every one of our stories has a purpose. He helps us find what that purpose may be.    I was so inspired by this interview in our BE STRONG series, and I know you will be too.    Grab Sam’s book here: A Greater Story  Listen to Sam’s Popular Podcast: https://agreaterstory.org/radio/   You can check out the rest of our show notes here:https://www.bestrongstory.com/be-love-podcast And tune in next week for another special guest in our BE STRONG series.

Do you know anyone who’s enjoying semi-retirement? It’s an option worth considering. In this episode of our retirement podcast, we talk with Author, Keynote Speaker and Communications Strategist Sam Horn.  We discuss her new book Someday Is Not a Day in the Week: 10 Hacks to Make the Rest of Your Life the Best of Your Life. Is semi-retirement the best option for you? What About Half-Retiring? Sam shares her wisdom (and her great stories) on a range of topics including what gets in the way of people realizing their dreams in retirement.  She suggests strategies on how to overcome common obstacles and she previews life hacks you can use to move forward. She also explains how the option of Half-Retiring is a way to retire smarter. Is Semi-Retirement the Best Way to Test a Second Career? In her view, semi-retirement gives you a path to try out a second career.  It’s a way to transition to retirement gradually – and on your own terms. In Sam’s opinion,  semi-retirement may offer the best of both worlds. Sam also shares tools and quick, powerful exercises in real-time that you can use in planning for the other side of retirement. Wise Quote: On Semi-retirement “I’m so glad you brought this up because he part-time is doing the same thing, just less of it. So whatever it is we’re doing, instead of working 60 hours or 50 hours a week, we work for half that. Well, I believe half-retiring is that we don’t keep doing the same thing. We look in our life about what we really love to do and instead of theme that we’ll all have more fun when my work is done or I have my profession and I have my passion, I have my work and I have my recreation instead of seeing those as separate, what if we can blend them? So we have the best of both worlds right now.” For more on Sam Horn: Someday Is Not a Day in the Week on Amazon Sam Horn’s Websites:   (The Intrigue Agency) Sam Horn’s Happiness Box   Bio Sam Horn is CEO of the Intrigue Agency, an international keynote speaker, author, and book consultant. Repurpose Your Career | Career Pivot | Careers for the 2nd Half of Life | Career Change | Baby Boomer

In this episode, Marc shares the chapter, “When Clouds Part: Moments of Clarity,” from his upcoming book, Repurpose Your Career: A Practical Guide to the Second Half of Life, scheduled to be available for pre-order in March, and available on Amazon, in April, 2017.   Key Takeaways: [2:03] Sam was in his late 50s when he was laid off for the second time. He went on walkabout for a month. In that time, he had a moment of clarity. He realized he didn’t need a lot. All he needed was food, drink, a place to sleep, and a place to work out. [3:19] In moments of clarity, distractions vanish away in the face of something life-altering: illness, death, divorce, layoff, disaster, an inheritance, or an opportunity. Suddenly, the way you were living doesn’t make sense. It may touch on your career. [4:20] You might realize you went into a career under pressure, or that you are stopped in your career path. Because of a change, filters that prevented you from seeing things as they are have come down, and you have an opportunity to learn more about yourself. [4:57] You learn what’s really important to you at those times. The problem is, those filters go back up quickly. If you don’t act in that moment of clarity, or set a change in place, you will go on as you were, with a nagging sense of a missed opportunity. [5:25] Marc talks about his own walkabout in his 20s. Spending only $500.00 in a month made him realize he needed a lot less than he thought. It also was when he met his wife of 30 years. Marc mentions other moments of clarity around his family, health, and job. [6:43] In a disability period after an accident, Marc found peace. His returning to work, when IBM was near bankruptcy, gave him purpose to change his career to preserve his contentment, rather than adopt the panic of his colleagues. [7:46] Marc’s moment of clarity helped his career pivot to teaching high school. What Marc learned in his moment of clarity no longer had a front seat in his awareness, but it was still there. Marc asks clients to look back for moments of clarity, and chronicle them. [8:27] Fill out a history of each job from its start to end. Note circumstances, duties, challenges, what you learned, how you felt, what you liked and didn’t like about your role, the team and management, the environment, and the conditions of your exit. Do this for every position you’ve ever had, and you will see a pattern. [10:16] Career Insanity is doing the same thing over and over, but expecting a different outcome each time. In Sam’s case, he decided to look for another job, and take a couple of years to plan to pivot with his spouse to a more modest lifestyle. [10:49] You’re likely to have a moment of clarity after reflecting back on your life and your career. You’re likely to see patterns and missed opportunities that have brought you to where you are today. What do you want to do, from today on? [11:10] Action Steps: Retrace moments when you suddenly saw life differently, after a hardship, or a happy event. Write down what you learned, whether you followed the lessons, or ignored them, and the results. Retrace your job history. What did you learn about yourself and your needs from each job? Moments of clarity are, oh so valuable! [11:45] Highlights to consider: (1) Marc’s bicycle accident, as related in episode 016, gave him clarity for his life. (2) Marc hated programming eight hours a day with a coding pad for IBM. When he followed his boss to a different position, he found he had made the same mistake. Looking back at his career changes, he sees several relapses.   Mentioned in This Episode: Audible.com Get a free audiobook download and free 30-day trial.
