This week we offer two different perspectives on the 1997 classic "As Good as It Gets" as Dustin has seen it many times since childhood and Jake saw it for the first time this week. We try to get to the bottom of how Melvin Udall, one of the worst people to center a movie around, so effectively gets us to care about him, understand him, and ultimately believe someone could fall in love with him. We explore the effectiveness of all the directorial choices, writing structure, music and how all that contributes to bringing these complex and flawed characters to life on screen. Reach out to us on Facebook and Instagram and let us know your thoughts about this week's film. Yeardley Smith is known for her role as Lisa Simpson on the animated television series “The Simpsons.” She became an actress in 1982 after graduating from drama school. In 1987, she auditioned for the Simpsons shorts on “The Tracey Ullman Show.” In 1989, the shorts became a spin off and “The Simpsons” was born. Yeardley received a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance in 1992. She has appeared in several films, including “Just Write,” “Toys,” “City Slickers,” and “As Good as It Gets.” In 2004, Yeardley performed a one-woman off-Broadway show, called “More” in New York City.
No matter the rung of the ladder you happen to be on in the entertainment industry, making it in Hollywood is no easy feat. And with how our world is evolving post-pandemic, you might think it will be nearly impossible to maintain any sort of work-life balance for our foreseeable future, especially if you’re fortunate enough to reach the top rung of the ladder like today’s guest. If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to not only survive but thrive while working on giant tent pole films like The Avengers series, Captain America: Civil War and Iron Man 3, or a multitude of other blockbusters, then this conversation is going to give you the inside look you’ve been waiting for. Award-winning editor Jeffrey Ford, ACE has made his career working with big name directors like Michael Mann, Joss Whedon, Anthony & Joe Russo, and Joe Johnston, and he does not sugar coat the reality that editing these films is an all-consuming endeavor. In today’s interview with Jeffrey (which was originally recorded a few years ago back in the ‘Fitness In Post’ days), he does share with us his secrets and routines for maintaining his health and family life without succumbing to bad habits and burnout. We dive deep into the methods he uses to stay energetic and creative despite the long hours, specifically maintaining consistent movement throughout his workday. He also talks about the immense importance of keeping his team rested and refreshed so they too can be productive and creative while still meeting the demanding and intense work schedules on huge tentpole films. While the conversation might not be brand new, the topics we discuss are as relevant as ever. If setting boundaries and maintaining some semblance of sanity in our post-pandemic world is a priority for you, after listening I highly recommend following up this episode with my interview with producer Janace Tashjian where we discuss the importance of setting boundaries, advocating for yourself, and asking for help. Want to Hear More Episodes Like This One? » Click here to subscribe and never miss another episode Here's What You'll Learn: The story of how Jeff began his film career after graduating from USC film school and getting his first job as an apprentice editor with director James Gray and editor Dorian Harris What film school taught him about teamwork and making connections with people in the industry. The struggles he endured through years of unemployment, only working 5 days a month while making films on his own to hone his craft. His humility still leaves him surprised and enthused that people continue to let him cut their films. The extreme focus necessary to edit the film, Public Enemies with Michael Mann, and the demanding schedule and hours he endured. Jeff believes that the longer you sit in front of your screen without moving, the more it inhibits your objectivity and relationship with your audience. Why he makes time for 3 to 4 movement breaks throughout the day. The reason his standing desk has been an enormous benefit to his creativity and mental fortitude. The scheduling fix they use on the Marvel movies to avoid burnout and ensure everyone stays healthy and happy. The importance of having a work environment that provides daylight, space, and amenities to maintain health and well being. Self-assertion and setting boundaries must be built into your routine due to the competitive and intense nature of the business. On Jeff’s team, taking care of yourself is looked upon as a strength rather than a weakness. KEY TAKE AWAY #1: Keep perspective about the job by understanding that your family is your most important support system to keep you going. KEY TAKE AWAY #2: Staying in shape physically is directly connected to your mental well being which is connected to your success. KEY TAKE AWAY #3: Divide the workload between more people working shorter hours to stay creative and productive. Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt each won an Academy Award for 1997's As Good as It Gets, a movie about a jerk with OCD and a waitress with a heart of gold. This week, we discuss dogs that don’t eat bacon, why Jack Nicholson’s character would have fit in at Dunder Mifflin, and how this movie ended up with the name 'Mr. Cat Poop' in Hong Kong. We also weigh in on Steven Spielberg's beef with Netflix before finding out if As Good as It Gets stands the Test of Time.

Yeardley Smith is one of the most famous women on Earth — though you might not know it if you just bumped into her somewhere, at least until she said something. See, Smith is the voice of Lisa Simpson, the precocious 8-year-old middle child of the Simpson family and the center of some of the show’s very best episodes. (“Lisa’s Substitute”! Sob!) But Smith is more than the famous kid she’s played for more than 30 years now. She’s starred in numerous films and other TV shows, including the infamous Herman’s Head (sadly, she wasn't one of the people inside Herman’s head) and the Oscar-winning film As Good as It Gets. She’s even made shoes. But it’s her most recent project that might seem most outside her wheelhouse. It’s a true crime podcast that examines crimes from the point-of-view of the people who solved them, then sends Smith and her co-host Zibby Allen to cover around the country looking into these crimes. It’s an engaging and thoughtful look at how crimes can rock tiny little towns where everybody knows everybody. Smith joins Todd this week to talk about the national fascination with true crime, her wide-ranging slate of interests, and, yes, Lisa Simpson. Learn more about your ad choices. A mentally ill author, a spunky waitress, and a gay painter show us that all you need to do in life to find true happiness is settle for less in the 1997 Best Picture nominee "As Good as It Gets." Jack Nicholson plays Melvin Udall, a reclusive obsessive-compulsive who keeps people away with his bristly attitude, but underneath that rough exterior is a manipulative old lecher who wants to get laid. He actually won an Oscar for this. Helen Hunt plays Carol Connelly, a plucky waitress with a sick son who is desperate to find a man. She says some stale lines, gets upset several times, and shows a little butt crack, so it's supposed to be a magnificent performance. Greg Kinnear plays Simon Bishop, an artist who is robbed and beaten so badly that he goes broke from the hospital bills. Simon is forced to go on a zany road trip to ask his parents for help. We're supposed to believe that this seemingly awful situation changes Simon's life for the better somehow, even though he is now deformed, handicapped, and roommates with a madman. Guest Joseph Heath, author of “Economics Without Illusions: Debunking the Myths of Modern Capitalism,” joins us as we turn our skeptical eyes toward the treacherous dual terrain of economics and politics. We discuss the ways in which, with his book, he attempts to raise our economic literacy and empower us with new ideas. In it, he draws on everyday examples to skewer the six favorite economic fallacies of the right, followed by impaling the six favorite fallacies of the left. Heath leaves no sacred cows untipped as he breaks down complex arguments and shows how the world really works. Joseph Heath is the Director of the Centre for Ethics and Professor of Philosophy and Public Policy at the University of Toronto. In addition to his academic publications, he is the author of other popular books, among them, "The Rebel Sell : Why the Culture Can't Be Jammed" and "Efficient Society: Why Canada is as Close to Utopia as It Gets"
This episode is a bit of a mixed bag. I had so many topics to cover this week that I went a bit over my normal time target…by a minute…two minutes before I cut it down. Never the less, I think you will find this is a good use of your 23 minutes and 30 seconds. I talk about the passage of healthcare in the US (yay thank you Mr. Obama), an idea I had to work overseas later this year. I also update you on my writing progress and discuss how the ideas from the movie “As Good as It Gets” maybe applied to real life.
