50 years ago, a 20-something Peter Weir decided to hypnotise us away from the possibility of solutions when he adapted Joan Lindsay's novel into the Australian gothic horror classic, Picnic at Hanging Rock. On Valentine's day in 1900, the students from Miss Appleyard's depart their fortress-like school in rural Victoria for a lazy afternoon at the base of Hanging Rock. The hot wind blows in, the clocks stop, the girls peel off their stockings and, as the ants descend on the remains of the picnic, four girls ascend the rock, along with one of their teachers. Only one of them returns. As people hear of the mysterious disappearances, search parties break out, but only one girl is recovered, missing her corset and her memory of what happened at Hanging Rock. As are we all. Zero and The Wiz RECOMMEND Picnic at Hanging Rock Picnic at Hanging Rock, Peter Weir's film based on the novel by Joan Lindsay, is definitely a movie that is for a specific type of person in a specific type of mood. It's a quite, beautiful but at times discomforting film about tragedy and how the people in a protected bubble react when tragedy strikes. It has exceptional cinematography and the direction by Weir sets up the ethereal vibe of the film that leads to it's eerie and discomforting tone. It's a film that both Wiz and Zero can see it's quality in. But Zero is perfectly fine with his singular viewing, while Wiz is not sure exactly how much he likes the film which will require multiple viewings to really grasp. Still, Picnic at Hanging Rock is a good film that, if you are a fan of someone like Sofia Coppola, should actually give this film a strong shot.

It's 1900 in Australia. A group of students from a girls' boarding school, brimming with the enthusiasm of youth, embark on what's supposed to be a carefree Valentine's Day outing at the iconic Hanging Rock. The ambience is idyllic, and the laughter is contagious. But as the day unfolds, this innocent trip takes a dark turn. Four girls, drawn inexplicably into the rock's embrace, venture deeper. By sunset, only one returns, memory erased, and a teacher is mysteriously gone.Behind this masterpiece is director Peter Weir, who, fresh from his first full-length feature film, The Cars That Ate Paris, crafts an atmosphere that is seen and felt. The cast, led by talents like Anne-Louise Lambert as the ethereal Miranda and Rachel Roberts as the stern Mrs Appleyard, breathe life into Joan Lindsay's iconic novel. But this film isn't just about the mystery of the missing. At its core, "Picnic at Hanging Rock" delves into themes of nature versus civilisation. The untouched beauty of the Australian wilderness stands in stark contrast to the Victorian-era restraints and societal expectations the girls grapple with. Themes of time, both its palpable passage on that fateful day and the metaphysical aspects, play heavily throughout the film. It challenges us to consider sexuality, the mysteries of adolescence, and the clash between the known and the unknown. This isn't just a movie; it's a mood, an atmosphere. It's a dreamlike state that lingers, asking viewers to grapple with the line between reality and the ethereal, the known and the unknowable. The haunting soundtrack and the Australian landscape's cinematic beauty craft a visceral and cerebral experience. And today, as we traverse this intricate cinematic landscape, we're joined by Tab. With her unique insights and deep appreciation for film, we're set to embark on a deep dive into this masterpiece. Time slips, time anomalies, missing time. How can we be so sure time flows in one direction. OBEs, UFO encounters and Near Death experiences all suggest time is much more flexible than conventional routine allows. Can we explore that? Certainly it is possible in OBE. Otherwise, for now - the trick is to simply hang on for the ride and get used to being given clues while making the adjustment to a radical relationship that allows for things to happen in a fashion that can be mind blowing - picture 'everywhere all at once'. The world opened in a new way for me when I discovered the book - and watched the series - Picnic at Hanging Rock. Amazon Link. I then followed up with The Secret of Hanging Rock and the Biography of Joan Lindsay to find more clues about Joan's unique view and relationship with time. While all that is going on -- [you experience what you focus on] -- I had a few interesting time anomalies and I revisit others that previously challenged me to revise my world view -- a reality reset. There are so many wonders begging to be incorporated into our reality. Apparently, due to lack of imagination or fear of the unknown, the only way they can be discovered is when someone trips over them. Eventually allowed/acknowledged existence when the due date on those who can't or refuse to experience them has expired. Consider a dimension where Alice in Wonderland is not a fantasy but guided tour of a world designed to trigger creativity and imagination, to awaken the awareness that anything and everything that happens is actually off the clock. All that we see or seem - Is but a dream within a dream. - Edgar Allen Poe, Poetry Foundation. Picnic at Hanging Rock is more than just a book/film/story. I've experienced several paranormal anomalies in conjunction with my discovery of this content that make me extremely curious to find out more. It wasn't enough to see the recently updated series. I ordered the book and then added the posthumously published follow-up publication of the 18th chapter, The Secret of Hanging Rock, Amazon. (Still on the way, the Biography of the author, Joan Lindsay.) In the previous segment I talked about a perfectly timed Valentine - delivered via misdirected text. Valentine's Day was Joan's favorite holiday. Not only have the time related anomalies continued, I witnessed something I had never seen as I was uploading audio to a site. The time was out of sync. A glitch, no doubt - but a glitch I saw happen in real time. The other issue? An amazing find in the commentary included with The Secret of Hanging Rock. One of the contributors offers an Indigenous perspective. That was what I needed to see - and a truly wonderful surprise. The commenter is Mudrooroo, Colin Johnson. Deceased, 2019. Obit. “He was the premier Indigenous poet, novelist, essayist, playwright, and academic of the generation that created Aboriginal literature and an Aboriginal rights movement in Australia. He suggests the missing girls and their teacher had a UFO encounter...a topic that might have been too fringe for mass distribution at the time the story was published or even in the chapter reveal. Certainly a more relevant topic now with increased interest and greater acceptance of experiencers who have shared personal accounts indicating - missing time - is a common element related to UFO encounters. Even better, Mudrooroo offers the case of Kelly Cahill as an example. Reference: Youtube. There have been several time anomalies over the past few days. A wayward text featured in the image is my highlight: Max (GSD) was my guardian angel. Before he came to live with me, my guides gave me a prompt. They said ‘the other is coming'… Max was the companion I never knew I needed. I was a cat person. Max was a soul mate. He died in 2007. The text is from a vet who never knew him. In the past week, I had stumbled upon a recent series that looked interesting based upon a film I hadn't seen but now wanted to track down. Picnic at Hanging Rock. Having tracked down the book, the film, the series, and the biography of the author, my husband and I started to binge the series Sunday, Feb 12. That's when the text came. There are a lot of interesting PSI elements in the background of the author and paranormal events in regard to time. Friends called her a mystic. The story for the book came to her in sequential dreams. In an interview - Joan Lindsay said she didn't put much stock in trying to judge time by a person's age. She wasn't fond of clocks and watches didn't work on her. She expressed a quirk with watches as her special gift, said she could stop people's watches simply by sitting beside them. And the other people who had their watches stopped didn't argue that point. Joan was a very interesting person who downplayed her talents - even as she made use of them No missing this paranormal anomaly. There was a spectacular clock incident at the premier of the film in 1975. The clock at the theater stopped at 12 o'clock. Expanding the view and the possibilities that we are connected beyond the physical form and death is not an ending, what if there is another angle related to my Valentine's Day surprise? Maybe someone had a vested interest and a goal in mind with that wayward text - and designed it to capture my attention with a message sure to make me reflect ... and think twice. It was Joan's favorite holiday. A valentine in appreciation for me liking her work? To affirm an afterlife? Or just for fun. Think twice.

Sometimes, people disappear. There is something uniquely terrifying and captivating about the prospect of vanishing, or having someone you care about vanish. Even when there is a likely answer, the lack of absolute certainty regarding the fate of the missing can produce mysteries that puzzle us for decades or even centuries. From the Roanoke colonists, to the passengers of the Mary Celeste, to the works of Ambrose Bierce, and Joan Lindsay's classic Picnic at Hanging Rock, our fascination with and fear of unexplained disappearances can be strong enough to encourage the confusion of fact with fiction.----------------------My debut novel, THE SPITE HOUSE, is available for pre-order now through Barnes & Noble or an indie bookseller near you.----------------------For episode sources, scripts and more, visit healthyfears.com. For my publication credits, visit JohnnyCompton.com The opening theme for Healthy Fears: “Dark Game Background Loop” by Claudiu D. We visit Hanging Rock in Victoria's Macedon Ranges, yes a real place and the basis for Joan Lindsay's acclaimed mystery novel Picnic at Hanging Rock it has everything an eerie crime story begs for - intrigue, horror and disappearances.  The historical Australian novel is one of the country's most famous pieces of literature. Yet is it real?  It follows the story of an all girl's school picnic to Victoria's Hanging Rock in 1900, where a group of female students subsequently disappear.  The tale was brought to life in Peter Weir's classic Australian film in 1975.Joan Lindsay: Whether Picnic at Hanging Rock is fact or fiction, my readers must decide for themselves. As the fateful picnic took place in the year nineteen hundred, and all the characters who appear in this book are long since dead, it hardly seems important.Yes, you can speak to us to feature this show on your community radio station, or website, we would love to talk with you.  If you would like to reach out and help us with this fiercely Australian and independent podcast with sponsorship or product support, please contact us.We love your feedback and comments, and if you have something that you think we should feature, review, visit or discuss, then please drop us an email at  phatcat@iinet.net.au Like us on FacebookFollow us on InstagramSupport us on PatreonListen on SpotifyListen on AppleListen on GoogleListen on iHeartRadioListen on SoundcloudThank you for supporting us Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/user?u=27844421) Hosted on Acast. So have you solved the mystery of what actually happened at Hanging Rock?'Picnic At Hanging Rock' by Joan Lindsay is a fictional mystery that actually occurs at a real place. We follow the ladies from an Australian boarding school as their ideal day takes a tragic turn for the worse. The book is notable for it's rapid character switching and detailed descriptions of the scenery and unfolding events.I summarised the book as follows. "I was slightly hesitant at first but this book surprised me. It depicts the Aussie way of life with beautiful imagery of the landscape and deceptiveness of everyday mundane interactions all couched in that air of unfolding mystery. ‘Whether Picnic at Hanging Rock is fact or fiction, my readers must decide for themselves.' It's a scorching St Valentine's Day in 1900 when three boarding-school girls and a teacher disappear during a day-trip to Hanging Rock in the arid Australian outback. Fact or fiction? Misadventure or murder? Accident or assassination? Join us on our latest literary podcast adventure as we delve into the mystery, history and hysteria of Joan Lindsay's classic Australian Gothic novel with Kate Young, author of The Little Library Cookbook. From the slow-seeping horror of Hanging Rock to coming-of-age tales of tuck boxes and midnight feasts, high jinks and humour, Kate guides the Slightly Foxed magazine team through the school-story tradition and asks why it's such fertile ground for fiction. On the way we visit the Chalet School, Malory Towers and St Trinian's, and slip into darker territory with Decline and Fall, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go. In this month's literary expedition, we take a peek inside Quentin Blake's House of Illustration, and to finish there's the usual wide-ranging round-up of current reading featuring: Anthony Buckeridge's classic Jennings series of prep-school stories; Emily Danforth's romp, Plain Bad Heroines, inspired by Shirley Jackson; and Tsitsi Dangarembga's tale of a young girl from a rural village in Zimbabwe, Nervous Conditions. Please find links to books, articles, and further reading listed below. Emma is fascinated with the haunting Australian story Picnic at Hanging Rock, originally a book published in 1967 by Joan Lindsay. She had the opportunity to speak to Tom Wright, the playwright of Malthouse Theatre’s production of Picnic at Hanging Rock, and to visit the Macedon Ranges, the home of Picnic at Hanging Rock, to experience where the mystery all began. Picnic at Hanging Rock is on at the Malthouse Theatre until 20th March. Picture: Sourced from Malthouse Theatre website See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week Lee and Eddie are Tremblay-ing with anticipation as they interview Paul Tremblay, mathemetician, author of A Head Full of Ghosts, and one of a handful of authors to scare the living hell out of Stephen King! Listen in wonder as Lee asks interesting and thought-provoking questions of the acclaimed writer (who has a new novel coming out soon), wince in extreme embarassment as Eddie asks him to co-sign her home loan. He lists many influences, one of which is an all time favourite of both Lee and Eddie: Picnic at Hanging Rock by Joan Lindsay which they discuss at length (spoiler warning: give it a read!). Peter Weir's 1975 adaptation of Joan Lindsay's equivocally "true" novel is a trip, and not just because it's a mystery with no resolution. Sure it's success was based almost entirely on people thinking the story was real, but there's also a reason it won the BAFTA and Saturn awards for it's cinematography. It's a lovely movie, even if the answer to its central mystery remains unsolved and the answer Joan Lindsay came up with involves some sort of magic portal. It's probably best that Weir left that part out.
