Don't be a cover band — play your own original music. Proudly. If it's truly original, unique and interesting, you'll appear larger than life, even when your resources are meager. It all starts with this week's Shawnism: Talk Big; Work Small. You can be and become whatever you want — it just takes figuring out something in the universe you are good at or finding a pattern in the universe no one else sees. This is what legendary author and marketing master David Meerman Scott says. From big promises to small actions, like being active and engaged on social media and leveraging AI for productivity and ideation, you have to find the balance between bold talk and humble work. When you embrace BOLDNESS and set a title, or goal, or commit to an original mindset and talk BIG, then put in the small work to bring it to life, you can build a life (and career) that sets you apart and puts you on the path to ultimate fulfillment.

Today's episode is for you if you think you can do it alone, if you think you don't support, or you think being supported is a weakness. As my mentor Jesse Koren says, big work requires big support. By big work, we're talking starting a business, fixing your relationship, and healing from old wounds just to name a few examples. We can't do it alone. This is one of those universal truths but our habits and unhealthy beliefs can blind us to this truth. The Feldenkrais Method of Awareness Through Movement is about uncovering these habits and beliefs that operate beneath the surface, but only if we ask the question. In Feldenkrais movement lessons we're always curious about our internal support (the skeleton in relation to the Earth and gravity) but it's important to take the question further. How am I supported socially? Do I even consider that a possibility? This episode is a must listen if you think you're better off going it alone. I have walked that path and it's a tough one.*****Thank you for listening, dear listener!I am wonder if you would keep your eyes out for me?I worked in Filmmaking and Video production for 10 years and had to step back and do less because of debilitating back pain. This was a main reason that sent me on my Feldenkrais and embodiment journey, and now my back is more capable than ever before AND I am directing the biggest film of my life. That's why I am committed to helping filmmakers and videographers with back pain to help them restore their backs so they can work more jobs and move and feel better than ever.I wonder if you know anyone in film or video suffering from a bad back.Does anyone come to mind? James and I connected through LinkdIn. After seeing each other in the comment sections, then seeing more and more of each others posts, it only made sense to have a conversation to see why we are crossing each others paths more often. Well, after talking, I realized we have a lot in common and James has a great story to tell. Not only has he had major success through his pavement company, PMG, but he has now also been featured in Forbes.. as well as a best-selling author. For this week's motivational moment we bring you the inspiring words of legendary defensive end J.J. Watt. The five-time NFL Pro Bowl selection takes us back to when he first knew he wanted to play football and ultimately become the best player in the world. Plus, Watt reveals the meaning behind the quote that has motivated him since day one.
Dream, vision, and Goal In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps. - Proverbs 16:9“THE ONLY THING WORST THAN BEING BLIND IS HAVING A SIGHT BUT NO VISION.”– HELEN KELLERWhy do we need a vision? Usually, when God speaks he doesn't speak about our current situation. He speaks about our future. - Ex. Gideon on judges 6:12 - mighty warrior - Genesis 12 – He doesn't state Abraham's situation. Genesis 15:5 - He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”3 questions to ask when setting a goal Will this goal honor God?Is this goal motivated by love?3. will this goal require depending on God?

Flowing East and West: The Perfectly Imperfect Journey to a Fulfilled Life
What do Jeff Spicoli, Willy Wonka and The Price is Right have in common? They are all inspirations for our guest this week, Forrest Wright. Forrest grew up on the East Coast, and then found himself at UCLA in the late 80's where he believed a simple move across the country could unlock his “true self” that he had been partially hiding. What he learned was it would take a few more twists and turns in life, from working in the film industry, to getting his MBA and eventually launching his own branding company to learn that the more he shows up as his true self, the better his work, and the greater his success and fulfillment. He is now the author of 2 books, and an upcoming eLearning course, but most importantly he is fabulously, flamboyantly, and authentically himself. Jeff Spicoli would be proud. Bio: In 2009 I founded creative agency Page 90 to build compelling and authentic brand stories for organizations and individuals. Though the traditional paradigm is “mission leads the work,” I've realized that the opportunities that have come my way since then are responsible for evolving my mission. Now I am driven to raise the collective imagination of the corporate world so they can go about solving the challenges of the rest of the world. The way I do this is by facilitating Big Work: leading high functioning teams in solving their toughest challenges in the shortest amount of time for the largest impact. And, to have fun while doing it. Over the years I've gotten to tackle interesting strategic initiatives with non-traditional approaches like: reimagining an STD testing campaign as a sexy lifestyle brand helping a team craft a personality for a new machine learning platform using film and literary archetypes as our departure point creating an animated series to influence biotech engineers to adopt a design thinking approach to their work redesigning the car buying process by letting go of everything that's currently done in the auto industry At the core of projects like these is a commitment to helping people find the best possible approach to their work in a way that feels true, relevant and inspiring. I am a reformed film producer with a B.A. from UCLA and an MBA from UC San Diego. I co-authored the book Being Different Matters on personal career branding with one of my professors at UC San Diego. And, my second publication, The Hello Book just came out. It's a fill-in-your-own-story book for adults who want to share who they really are with the children in their lives. My Big Work classes should be up on the Thinkific site by the end of the year. And I'm building out an Idea Ranch in southwest Colorado where I hope to bring creatives, business leaders and change makers together to solve their toughest challenges in an inspired setting. Angus Nelson is bringing the fire and calling out of men to the full potential – to stop suffering in silence, limiting themselves, and instead rewriting their beliefs to embrace optimism, abundance, and possibility. As Angus likes to teach – What we hear about, we think about. What we think about, we talk about. And, what we talk about, we bring about. survive + thrive ~ conversations young with breast cancer survivors
Meet Dr. Deepa Halaharvi! Deepa is a breast cancer surgeon, and she herself is also a breast cancer survivor! We had the privilege of being part of Deepa's initial cancer diagnosis, but it was so meaningful to us to hear her entire story through breast cancer treatment and survivorship. Her drive to be her best in all aspects of her life is so very inspiring as she shares her path in her dream to be a doctor. Deepa's personal experience of “taking the road less traveled” in her struggles to get to her goal of being a physician is a powerful message that is relatable to life in general; and she also shares her strong relationship with her now late father, and how he taught her to “dream big and work hard.” Her breast cancer journey gave her a perspective that she can share with many of her newly diagnosed patients and also provides hope that they too can get through this adversity in their lives. Deepa's beautiful spirit shines through in this impactful story of her own breast cancer journey, and it is now woven into her life's work as a breast cancer surgeon. We know you will be touched by her emotion, her life lessons, and her evolution in her own recovery. We are so excited to share the journey of this remarkable woman!
A simple mindset to help you navigate through your most ambitious goals: think big, work small. If you're a business, focus on how to earn your first $1, then $10, then $100 and so on. If you're trying to write a novel, focus on writing the first page, then the second. Envisioning lofty goals doesn't require you to figure out how you will get there. Envisioning lofty goals in smaller units of progress does. Inspired by John Cutler's writings on Think Big, Work Small: https://cutlefish.substack.com/p/tbm-452-think-big-work-small-part
NOTE: The intro to this episode was recorded three days after the Boulder shooting and includes some profanity and opinions by me about mass shootings. Please note that the content may not be work or young-child friendly. Kaycie Grigel sent me an email in the midst of chemo treatments for her recently diagnosed breast cancer. Through the difficulties and the darkness, she had stumbled upon inspiration that she knew she needed to share. I suggested we wait until her treatments were done in case she gains more perspective, clarity and momentum on her next big work. We connected four weeks after her last treatment. We jump right in and Kaycie shares the details of her journey as well as the bigger picture messages that have surfaced with grace and clarity. Notables from this episode: Her breast cancer treatment included a lumpectomy, an MRI machine with boob holes and the (not FDA approved) "Cold Cap" that allowed her to keep her hair. Support: The #1 key to having a positive journey through a dark diagnosis Movement: Kaycie set this goal - Exercise EVERY DAY DURING TREATMENT. She did it and credits movement as being mission critical to her success. Advocate for yourself! Find the medical team that is the best fit for you. Hormone talk! There's an enlightening discussion that Kaycie shares in layman's terms about how our estrogen shuts off as we age and our adrenals take over. This leads to adrenal fatigue in many menopausal women. The #1 thing we can do for our hormones is manage our stress. That includes sleep, eating good food, moving, getting outside, nurturing good relationships, releasing negative relationships What is YOUR Big Work? Don't leave this world without embracing and moving forward with your big work. Nugget: "Whatever brings that camera into focus for you, run toward it." BGBS Episode 001: Dream Big, Work Hard, Create ValueHe may not be as well-known as William Shatner, but Jeff Hoffman knows him. Jeff has gained global insight and experience from launching and growing various companies, including Priceline.com. His impact on how we travel and do things in life has been significant. Jeff has built a career by innovating through entrepreneurship and seeking out solutions that create industry shifts – from the way we book airline tickets to how we create entrepreneurship in emerging economies across the continents. You'll Learn… Purpose and process of starting Priceline.com was to create buyer-driven commerce and harvest consumer demand Challenge for Priceline was on the consumer side – needed to get people to trust it and change consumer behavior When you check in at airports today, you can use a kiosk that prints your boarding pass; you can thank Jeff for those kiosks and saving you time Entrepreneurship is the tool, not the purpose of solving big problems; people complain when there's a problem, entrepreneurs are the ones to take action Entrepreneurship went from being crazy and can't find a job to being cool; Jeff made a connection between goals and dreams with the work he could do Jeff's Formula for Success: Dream Big, Work Hard, Create Value Nothing is ever easy, and there are always obstacles; shake off failures and learn from them Jeff spends time mentoring entrepreneurs around the world and teaching them how to turn ideas into businesses – making their dreams a reality Badge of honor used to be working for a major company for numerous years; now it's about the gig economy where you have multiple jobs to reach fulfilment Jeff uses stories to learn something and get his point across; makes customers the heroes of his stories Be an entrepreneur with an eye for wonder and non-stop intellectual curiosity; what are successful people doing that others aren't doing? Resources Jeff Hoffman Scale Priceline Quotes from Jeff Hoffman: “Entrepreneurship is a set of tools you use to solve a problem. It's a mindset and it's a tool set to take you anywhere you want to go.” “Solving problems and making things more efficient is a DNA thing for me.” “Nothing is ever easy. But nothing worth having is ever easy. There's always a lot of obstacles, which just makes the victory that much sweeter.” “Get to know them (customers). Listen to them, don't listen to what your competitors are doing.”
