We discuss the Supreme Court decision allowing states to defund Planned Parenthood and we decry many attempts by Christian nationalists to force religious conformity on a diverse nation. After celebrating the life of the irreverent comedian, actor, filmmaker, songwriter and playwright Mel Brooks (who turns 99 this month), we hear opening statements in two debates in the United Kingdom that FFRF co-presidents participated in. We hear the Opening Statement by Dan Barker in a debate at Oxford University on the topic: "This House Believes God Is a Delusion." Then we hear the Opening Statement by Annie Laurie Gaylor at Cambridge University on the topic: "This House Believes Religion and Feminism Are Incompatible."

There's a moment in Mel Brooks' “History of the World Part 1” where we're told that shortly after the first artists came the first art critics…..I'll leave you to determine what happens…. The music world is certainly not short of people with opinions in regards to others' ability to perform and provide nuance to the work they present for us as music lovers to listen to. In the classical world, interpretation of the canon of baroque, classical, romantic and modernist music can be a mystery to some of us who are not classically trained musicians.  There's no shortage of classical soloists who've captured the wider public's imagination, yet have their critics as well. Welcome to episode 128 of See Hear Podcast. Glenn Gould is regarded as one of the great pianists of the 20th century, known in particular for his love of and heavy focus on the composition of J.S. Bach. However, he wasn't unanimously revered. Pianist Alfred Brendel was vocally not a fan. Even Leonard Bernstein who did love Gould's approach  covered himself before a TV broadcast of a Brahms piano concerto by saying Gould's approach was not going to be for everybody. Therein lies the heart of the matter – when you depart from an accepted orthodox style of playing of the canon, you're going to upset people. Glenn Gould upset some people. BUT….the reason he is still being talked about was for what he DID, not what he didn't do. He's most famous for his first and last released recordings, Bach's Goldberg Variations (1955 and 1981). Even there his recordings are wildly different, and the latter upset some who championed the earlier recording. He's also remembered for his intellect and could discuss may other issues outside of music – something he did on radio and TV specials. In 1993, film director Francois Girard released a brilliant biopic / documentary called “Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould”. Like its subject, the film takes a wildly different approach from the accepted norm of musician biopic. As the name implies, the film comprises of 32 shorts featuring narratives, interviews, performance and experimentation that provide a strong sense of Gould's character. There is a 3 act structure, but not in the usual way that you get in a conventional musician biography. June 2025 sees the reissue of the film by Criterion, and I was thrilled to welcome Francois to the podcast to talk about this film and Gould in general. Unfortunately, we couldn't coordinate the timing to have Tim or Kerry available, but I still had a fascinating conversation with Francois that I hope you find illuminating. This week in the Labyrinth, we're firing up the hyperjets and diving helmet-first into the big news: Spaceballs 2 is officially happening! Mel Brooks is back as Yogurt (yes, seriously), and he's bringing Rick Moranis and Bill Pullman with him. We break down everything we know so far about the upcoming Amazon sequel—including the “definitely not a reboot but kinda is” franchise expansion and Josh Gad's mysterious role. Will we finally get Merchandising 2: The Merchandising? Then we ask: What the hell happened to movie catchphrases? From “Bueller...Bueller...” to “I'll be back,” Gen X grew up quoting our favorite flicks. But nowadays, catchphrases are just callbacks or punchlines. Is it laziness? Nostalgia fatigue? Or is Hollywood too scared to get meme'd? We throw out our favorite all-time movie quotes and get predictably sidetracked by Spaceballs dialogue.

We love Mel Brooks. He is responsible for some of the funniest movies of all time. Young Frankenstein is also one of the best adaptations the Mary Shelley classic ever made. So, we were both excited to hear about the sequel to Spaceballs. We rank our favorite movies from Brooks and why Spaceballs once disappointed us.We are also huge fans of Fright Night. While there was a great remake in the early 2010s, you just do not hear enough about it. Despite having one of horror's most iconic lines, it does not get that much love. This week, we have two bits of news; one is concrete; one is its rumored connection to one of the most infamous murders of all time. This year for Pride Month we are discussing The Last Thing Mary Saw. It is a great bit of folk horror that is frightening, atmospheric, and filled with great characters. The mystery is engaging and the performances are top notch. It also treats its queer subject matter with a sensitivity that is not seen enough. The first six months just whooshed by and we have a lot to discuss. We cover a wide range of topics. Why do we sometimes consider no longer reviewing documentaries? The good and bad of AI in film. More folk horror, a slasher, and a reverse exorcism all enter our conversation about 2025's first six months. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Privacy invasions, robot surveillance, and the surprising return of beloved cult classics dominate this week's tech landscape. Meta has been caught red-handed using tactics similar to digital criminals to secretly harvest web browsing data from Android devices through a backdoor approach that even Google wasn't aware of. The technique mirrors malicious software, planting itself on phones and bypassing security settings by default—a disturbing revelation that should prompt users to reconsider their browser choices.Meanwhile, autonomous vehicles like Waymo have become rolling surveillance systems, their 360-degree cameras constantly recording everything and everyone they pass. Police departments in San Francisco and Phoenix are already issuing warrants for this footage, raising profound questions about our surveillance-saturated future. When you step into a robo-taxi, you're essentially signing away your privacy rights—just one more way we're trading convenience for constant monitoring. On a lighter note, the 1987 cult classic Spaceballs is finally getting a sequel in 2027. Could it be called "The Schwartz Awakens"? It will reunite original cast members including Mel Brooks as Yogurt, Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet, and Bill Pullman as Lone Star, while introducing new characters including Bill Pullman's real-life son Lewis as "Starburst." In other fascinating developments, Chinese researchers have achieved remarkable accuracy in reconstructing human faces from DNA alone, scientists have genetically engineered spiders to produce glowing red silk, and space station microbes are evolving new protective features against radiation. The technological landscape continues to advance at breathtaking speed—for better and sometimes worse.Join us each week as we navigate these technological developments with expert analysis and our signature touch of whiskey appreciation. This is similar to July's Superman, which started out with the title Superman: Legacy. Gunn shared that he and his team do what he calls “premortems,” where they attempt to suss out issues with projects prior to release rather than reacting on the back end. The shortening of titles has come out of those discussions. In the same article, Gunn got candid about the state of Batman in the DCU and the complexities of navigating the character with Matt Reeves' adaptation in consideration or making it his own. Lastly, Gunn announced today that actor Tom Rhys Harries will play Basil Karlo/Clayface in the film set to be released in September 2026.Live action remakes continue to rule at the box office, with this weekend's How to Train Your Dragon capturing the top spot opening to a global $197 million. What Hump? Thirty Years of Cybersecurity and the Fine Art of Pretending It's Not a Human ProblemA new transmission from Musing On Society and Technology Newsletter, by Marco CiappelliJune 6, 2025A Post-Infosecurity Europe Reflection on the Strange but Predictable Ways We've Spent Thirty Years Pretending Cybersecurity Isn't About People.⸻ Once there was a movie titled “Young Frankenstein” (1974) — a black-and-white comedy directed by Mel Brooks, written with Gene Wilder, and starring Wilder and Marty Feldman, who delivers the iconic “What hump?” line.Let me describe the scene:[Train station, late at night. Thunder rumbles. Dr. Frederick Frankenstein steps off the train, greeted by a hunched figure holding a lantern — Igor.]Igor: Dr. Frankenstein?Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: It's Franken-steen.Igor: Oh. Well, they told me it was Frankenstein.Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: I'm not a Frankenstein. I'm a Franken-steen.Igor (cheerfully): All right.Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (noticing Igor's eyes): You must be Igor.Igor: No, it's pronounced Eye-gor.Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (confused): But they told me it was Igor.Igor: Well, they were wrong then, weren't they?[They begin walking toward the carriage.]Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (noticing Igor's severe hunchback): You know… I'm a rather brilliant surgeon. Perhaps I could help you with that hump.Igor (looks puzzled, deadpan): What hump?[Cut to them boarding the carriage, Igor climbing on the outside like a spider, grinning wildly.]It's a joke, of course. One of the best. A perfectly delivered absurdity that only Mel Brooks and Marty Feldman could pull off. But like all great comedy, it tells a deeper truth.Last night, standing in front of the Tower of London, recording one of our On Location recaps with Sean Martin, that scene came rushing back. We joked about invisible humps and cybersecurity. And the moment passed. Or so I thought.Because hours later — in bed, hotel window cracked open to the London night — I was still hearing it: “What hump?”And that's when it hit me: this isn't just a comedy bit. It's a diagnosis. Here we are at Infosecurity Europe, celebrating its 30th anniversary. Three decades of cybersecurity: a field born of optimism and fear, grown in complexity and contradiction. We've built incredible tools. We've formed global communities of defenders. We've turned “hacker” from rebel to professional job title — with a 401(k), branded hoodies, and a sponsorship deal. But we've also built an industry that — much like poor Igor — refuses to admit something's wrong. The hump is right there. You can see it. Everyone can see it. And yet… we smile and say: “What hump?”We say cybersecurity is a priority. We put it in slide decks. We hold awareness months. We write policies thick enough to be used as doorstops. But then we underfund training. We silo the security team. We click links in emails that say whatever will make us think it's important — just like those pieces of snail mail stamped URGENT that we somehow believe, even though it turns out to be an offer for a new credit card we didn't ask for and don't want. Except this time, the payload isn't junk mail — it's a clown on a spring exploding out of a fun box.Igor The hump moves, shifts, sometimes disappears from view — but it never actually goes away. And if you ask about it? Well… they were wrong then, weren't they? That's because it's not a technology problem. This is the part that still seems hard to swallow for some: Cybersecurity is not a technology problem. It never was.Yes, we need technology. But technology has never been the weak link. The weak link is the same as it was in 1995: us. The same it was before the internet and before computers: Humans. With our habits, assumptions, incentives, egos, and blind spots. We are the walking, clicking, swiping hump in the system. We've had encryption for decades. We've known about phishing since the days of AOL. Zero Trust was already discussed in 2004 — it just didn't have a cool name yet.So why do we still get breached? Why does a ransomware gang with poor grammar and a Telegram channel take down entire hospitals?Because culture doesn't change with patches. Because compliance is not belief. Because we keep treating behavior as a footnote, instead of the core. The Problem We Refuse to See at the heart of this mess is a very human phenomenon:vIf we can't see it, we pretend it doesn't exist. We can quantify risk, but we rarely internalize it. We trust our tech stack but don't trust our users. We fund detection but ignore education. And not just at work — we ignore it from the start. We still teach children how to cross the street, but not how to navigate a phishing attempt or recognize algorithmic manipulation. We give them connected devices before we teach them what being connected means. In this Hybrid Analog Digital Society, we need to treat cybersecurity not as an optional adult concern, but as a foundational part of growing up. Because by the time someone gets to the workforce, the behavior has already been set.And worst of all, we operate under the illusion that awareness equals transformation.Let's be real: Awareness is cheap. Change is expensive. It costs time, leadership, discomfort. It requires honesty. It means admitting we are all Igor, in some way. And that's the hardest part. Because no one likes to admit they've got a hump — especially when it's been there so long, it feels like part of the uniform. We have been looking the other way for over thirty years. I don't want to downplay the progress. We've come a long way, but that only makes the stubbornness more baffling. We've seen attacks evolve from digital graffiti to full-scale extortion. We've watched cybercrime move from subculture to multi-billion-dollar global enterprise. And yet, our default strategy is still: “Let's build a bigger wall, buy a shinier tool, and hope marketing doesn't fall for that PDF again.”We know what works: Psychological safety in reporting. Continuous learning. Leadership that models security values. Systems designed for humans, not just admins. But those are hard. They're invisible on the balance sheet. They don't come with dashboards or demos. So instead… We grin. We adjust our gait. And we whisper, politely:“What hump?”So what Happens now? If you're still reading this, you're probably one of the people who does see it. You see the hump. You've tried to point it out. Maybe you've been told you're imagining things. Maybe you've been told it's “not a priority this quarter.” And maybe now you're tired. I get it.But here's the thing: Nothing truly changes until we name the hump.Call it bias.Call it culture.Call it education.Call it the human condition. But don't pretend it's not there. Not anymore. Because every time we say “What hump?” — we're giving up a little more of the future. A future that depends not just on clever code and cleverer machines, but on something far more fragile:Belief. Behavior. And the choice to finally stop pretending. We joked in front of a thousand-year-old fortress. Because sometimes jokes tell the truth better than keynote stages do. And maybe the real lesson isn't about cybersecurity at all.Maybe it's just this: If we want to survive what's coming next, we have to see what's already here.- The End➤ Infosecurity Europe: https://www.itspmagazine.com/infosecurity-europe-2025-infosec-london-cybersecurity-event-coverageAnd ... we're not done yet ... stay tuned and follow Sean and Marco as they will be On Location at the following conferences over the next few months:➤ Black Hat USA in Las Vegas in August: https://www.itspmagazine.com/black-hat-usa-2025-hacker-summer-camp-2025-cybersecurity-event-coverage-in-las-vegasFOLLOW ALL OF OUR ON LOCATION CONFERENCE COVERAGEhttps://www.itspmagazine.com/technology-and-cybersecurity-conference-coverageShare this newsletter and invite anyone you think would enjoy it!As always, let's keep thinking!— Marco [https://www.marcociappelli.com]

Did you hear the news? After 38 years of waiting, Spaceballs 2 was announced yesterday. Check out the hilarious announcement from Mel Brooks himself: I cannot wait! In 1987, Mel Brooks released Spaceballs as a parody of Star Wars and other science fiction of that era. As much as I consider myself a Star Wars geek, I've probably watched Spaceballs more than the movies it parodies. It's so quotable, and somehow, it never gets old. I was recently considering a common IT problem, and for some reason, Spaceballs scenes kept coming... With his fantastic new book, EMINENT JEWS (Holt), writer and critic David Denby explores the impact on American culture of Jews Unbound through profiles of Leonard Bernstein, Mel Brooks, Betty Friedan, and Norman Mailer. We talk about how he selected his four subjects, how each of them came of age in an environment that Jews hadn't experienced in millennia, the ways each handled the responsibilities of family against their careers, the difference between "Jew" and "Jewish," and which one unfolded the most to him over the course of writing the book. We get into why Bernstein's greatest role may have been as a teacher, how Mailer's magnetism persisted way beyond its expiration date, how Friedan changed the world but was always challenged by her midwest upbringing, and whether Brooks was being disingenuous when he made musical numbers of our the Inquisition and Hitler. We also discuss judgements David made over the course of his career as a movie critic, what he did when he finally gave up reviewing and how he eased back into the cinema, why he revisited the Lit Hum course at Columbia a few years ago, after previously revisiting it 30+ years ago for Great Books, his take on my my lightning round of classic lit questions, his non-Le Carré experience in East Berlin, his reaction to my parents taking me to History of the World: Part 1 when I was 9, and more. Shortly after graduating high school, Ed Gale — who stood 3'4” tall — left Michigan with $40 in his pocket and went to Hollywood. Gale said his goal was never to become a leading man, but to make a living as a working actor… and that he did, appearing in more than 200 television shows, commercials, and films. Upon arriving in Hollywood the first role he was offered was none other than Howard the Duck — a role he was originally told he was “too tall for.” Gale continued to work up until his passing in May of 2025.On this episode I'm recommending four films that Gale appeared in. In many of his acting roles (including most of these) Gale appeared wearing masks and costumes, but as Rollo from Under the Rainbow once said, “no dream is too big, and no dreamer too small.”Child's Play 2 (1990)Two years after the original hit theaters, Chucky returned to once again torment Andy Barclay. While the original Child's Play was straight horror, this is the film in which Chucky began to develop the personality we know and love today. Keep an eye out for scenes in which Chucky runs around; that's Ed Gale in costume.Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey (1991)Bill and Ted have a problem: despite being told they will eventually become the biggest band in the universe, they still don't know how to play their instruments and their girlfriends are fed up with them. Oh, and evil robots from the future have come back to murder them, so there's that. Featuring a stellar soundtrack and lots of jokes, Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey did not perform as well as the original in theaters, but has become a cult classic since. Keep an eye out for Station in the film — that's Ed Gale!Spaceballs (1987)In this Mel Brooks masterpiece, Princess Vespa has been kidnapped by Dark Helmet and his cohorts and must be rescued by Lone Star and his faithful companion, Barf. If it all sounds a bit silly it is. Featuring an all-star cast and more Mel Brooks humor than you can swing a lightsaber at. Keep an eye out for Ed Gale as one of the Dinks, and may the Schwartz be with ya!O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)In this Coen Brothers film, three members of a chain gang escape when one of them tells the other two he's chained to that he knows where more than a million dollars worth of treasure is buried. Loosely based on Homer's Odyssey, this is another film with a star-studded cast and an award winning soundtrack. Ed Gale makes an appearance as “the Little Man” during an election and in this appearance, you can actually see his face! (After seeing it, you may recognize him from Bones, My Name is Earl, and many other roles.)Whether he appeared in a speaking role or in a costume, Gale gave every one of his roles 100% and swore people could see him smiling through the masks he wore. After watching these four films, you just might agree with him.Subscribe now to the Video Store Podcast to receive a lifetime supply of popcorn. Offer valid at any of our physical locations. He's been a familiar face on television for years, on the long-running comedy Wings and the current Chicago Med. He grew up in a show-business family so it shouldn't be surprising that he loves to perform. His range is limitless and his credits attest to that: everything from Mel Brooks' stage musical The Producers to the TV adaptation of Stephen King's The Shining. He and Leonard enjoy exchanging old show-business trivia, and never seem to run out of material. Steven is an articulate connoisseur of comedy…and then some.
