Tonight on Triple Feature, we peel back more than just plot—this episode explores how each film was built, the bold choices behind them, and what makes them tick both on screen and in the cutting room.First, Sinners, the ambitious 2025 hybrid of Southern Gothic horror, musical, and supernatural thriller from Ryan Coogler. Coogler not only directed but wrote and produced, putting this deeply personal project through his Proximity Media banner. It was rumored to have sparked a fierce studio bidding war early on. The film was shot over spring and summer 2024 on location in Louisiana, and it pushed technical boundaries by being shot on 65 mm film—including IMAX 15-perf and Ultra Panavision 70 formats—allowing Coogler and cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw to shift between widescreen and immersive aspect ratios. Coogler also consulted real-life twins to help Michael B. Jordan ground his dual roles—Smoke and Stack—with distinct emotional and physical nuances. The production even reused costumes originally designed for Blade after that project shifted direction, thanks to designer Ruth E. Carter.Sinners is more than a genre film: it's built with weight, history, and intention, demanding you think about racially charged myth, redemption, and community as much as it scares you.Next up is Drop, directed by Christopher Landon and co-written by Jillian Jacobs & Chris Roach. On paper, it's a taut thriller: a widowed mother on her first date in years suddenly receives chilling anonymous messages via “DigiDrop” threatening the lives of her son and sister unless she follows orders—including committing murder. But behind that premise, the film draws from a real-life anxiety: the idea of unexpected AirDrops in public spaces. Production began in Ireland in April 2024, and the movie's contained setting (almost entirely within a restaurant and tied intimately to a digital device) turned constraint into tension. The director even explained that the final act's identity reveal and pivot underwent dramatic changes deep into post-production. The villain behind “Let's Play” commands the narrative with digital terror—a modern twist on classic “phone call from nowhere” horror tactics.Lastly, Echo Valley brings us out of the city and into Pennsylvania farmland, where Julianne Moore plays a horse trainer whose life becomes entwined with the state of her daughter, played by Sydney Sweeney. The screenplay, penned by Brad Ingelsby, layers in addiction, familial secrets, and the quiet violence that festers in isolated communities. Moore anchors the emotional ground, imbuing her character with both grief and steely resolve, while Sweeney provides the restless, volatile counterpart. The tension in Echo Valley often breathes through landscape and silence—what's not said becomes as dangerous as what is. The film has been praised for allowing Moore and Sweeney to take the emotional reins and carry scenes with minimal exposition, trusting the actors and the visuals to convey the weight.Three films. Three different modes of storytelling: Sinners with its genre-bending ambition and technical daring; Drop with its high-concept, digital-age suspense and careful spatial design; Echo Valley with its character-driven brood and sense of place. All three ask us to lean in—not just watch, but feel the mechanics behind them. Gartbage is back and we're heading south with several Michael B Jordan's for Ryan Coogler's period horror musical SINNERS! As always, we're discussing with full spoilers. We're tracing Sinners' path from conception to theatre, from Coogler's visit to a cotton plantation outside of Atlanta, to discovering Miles Caton and treating Jack O'Connell like Beyonce, to one of the best theatre experiences of the year. This film trusts its audiences in ways that recent blockbusters haven't, so we're getting into some of the details that make up this (our?) world: Hoodoo, the Great Migration, Juke Joints, Choctaw vampire hunters, we've got it all.Plus, Erin breaks down how Ludwig Goransson's blues-based score helps tell this story of racism, colonialism, and vampires. And how did we feel about the big Generations dance scene? The answer may surprise you!Next week we're taking another look at racial and colonial attitudes in the south with John Sayles' LONE STAR (1996)

The Art of a Deal with the Devil: on Faustian Bargains from Shakespeare and Goethe to Thomas Mann and Donald Trump

For anyone who has seen Michael B. Jordan's excellent new movie Sinners, it's clear that any sort of deal with the devil - what has become known as the Faustian Bargain - is still very much alive. So relevant, in fact, that cultural historian Ed Simon has a book, just out in paperback, about its enduring relevance entitled Devil's Contract. From Shakespeare and Goethe to Thomas Mann and Donald Trump, Simon argues, the Faustian Bargain is more than just a literary trope. In fact, he suggests, it is as relevant today, in our social media age of the Mephistophelian Donald Trump as it was in the German Reformation of the equally populist Martin Luther. The Art of a Deal with the Devil. And we all know how it ends. Go and see Sinners. Spoiler warning: not without the spilling of a great deal of innocent blood. 1. The Faustian Bargain is Fundamentally About Irrationality Despite knowing the terrible consequences, Faust signs the contract anyway. As Simon explains, "if you know that the devil is real and that the Devil collects souls at the end of your life, then like you'd never sign on the dotted line. And yet these characters continually do." This captures our human tendency to act against our own best interests.2. The Contract Makes It Modern What distinguishes the Faust legend from earlier devil stories is the literal paperwork. Simon argues this bureaucratic element - signing on the dotted line - transforms it into a distinctly modern tale about legal systems, capitalism, and bureaucracy. It's not just about temptation; it's about documentation.3. AI is Our Latest Faustian Bargain Simon sees artificial intelligence as having "a shockingly obvious kind of Faustian gloss" - from the magic of conjuring something from nothing to the environmental destruction of massive server farms. We're trading our future for technological convenience, knowing the costs.4. Trump is Mephistopheles, Not Faust In Simon's reading, Trump isn't the one making the deal - he's the devil others make deals with. JD Vance becomes the perfect example: fully aware of what Trump is, yet "willing to seemingly abandon whatever principles he may have had in the past... for power alone."5. Sometimes Faust Wins (But Usually Doesn't) While Goethe's Faust finds redemption and salvation, most versions end badly. The American "Yankee Faust" tries to trick the devil but still gets his house burned down. The lesson? You might think you're clever enough to beat the devil, but the house always wins.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. “I'd have preferred they made no movie at all…” - Eric  On this week's episode, the Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza has us chatting about the total misfire of a superhero reboot, Fantastic Four (2015)! Yikes, folks! Why are all members of the Fantastic Four under legal drinking age in this movie? Why did we need to see Reed and Ben as little kids at the beginning like it's some bad studio comedy from the 1990s? Why did so many people think this gritty, harsh take on a traditionally goofy property was a smart move? Why are the Storms snooping around high school science fairs looking for children to snatch up? And couldn't they have pumped just a little more money into this Doctor Doom costume? PLUS: Look out for the most dangerous member of the Marvel Universe — The Pebble!  Fantastic Four (2015) stars Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Bell, Toby Kebbell, Tim Blake Nelson, Dan Castellaneta, Chet Hanks, Tim Heidecker, and the late, great Reg E. Cathey as Dr. Franklin Storm; directed by Josh Trank. [EDITOR'S NOTE: While he's not in this FF film, we do mention Julian McMahon's performance as Dr. Doom in the Tim Story Fantastic Four films from 2005 and 2007. We recorded this about a month before Julian passed, so that's why it's not referenced here. McMahon was a great actor who, as we say in this episode, understood the assignment when playing Dr. Doom in those aughts films. Rest easy, Julian, a talented and very nice guy from all reports. — Andrew] Throughout 2025, we'll be donating 100% of our earnings from our merch shop to the Center for Reproductive Rights. This movie produced its fair share of both ~discourse~ and discussion, and we're adding our voices to the choir as we break down the vampire design, fall in love with Wunmi Mosaku and Hailee Steinfeld, and talk about that very important tutorial on how to eat some ice cream. Jordan played Bryan. Bryan is the founder of the Equal Justice Initiative and has argued and won cases before the United States Supreme Court. He has saved over 140 people from death row, many of them who were wrongly convicted, and his work has fundamentally transformed the conversation about justice, mercy, and human dignity. His life's mission is proving one powerful truth: You are not defined by your worst mistake. And neither is anyone else. This episode will shake you, open you, and move you to action. You'll learn: – 3 life-changing lessons from the lawyer who's saved 140 lives – The mindset that will help you stay hopeful, even in the darkest moments – Why compassion is courage — and how to practice it daily – How to live a life that reflects what you truly believe – Why the smallest actions often create the biggest change If you're feeling overwhelmed, discouraged, or unsure how to make a real difference, this episode is for you. For more resources, click here for the podcast episode page. If you liked this episode, you'll love listening to this one next: How to Find Your Purpose & Design the Life You WantConnect with Mel:  Get Mel's #1 bestselling book, The Let Them TheoryWatch the episodes on YouTubeFollow Mel on Instagram The Mel Robbins Podcast InstagramMel's TikTok Sign up for Mel's personal letter Subscribe to SiriusXM Podcasts+ to listen to new episodes ad-freeDisclaimer
