Ellen Adair and Eric Gilde discuss the 2001 movie "Hardball." They introduce the film (1:34), with an overview of the story, the cast, and filmmakers, and review the 20-80 baseball scouting grades for rating the film, with a new metaphor (8:14). In Amount of Baseball (17:50), the scouts initially disagree, but slightly convince each other. Ellen has two potential player comps. Baseball Accuracy (25:26) compares this Little League play to other films, with just a couple of editorial / geographical issues. Ellen defends Frank Thomas's honor and digs in on Sammy Sosa's consecutive homers, and records by Ken Griffey Jr, Don Mattingly, and Kevin Mench. That is not Wrigley. Those are not NBA games. Luis Garcia's dance step is considered. Storytelling (39:23) is a real challenge, when the entire inveterate gambler storyline does not work. Plus, white savior problems, a very confusing moral, and a complete lack of necessary exposition. There are so many unanswered questions. How does he earn their trust? Why does G-Baby have to die? Eulogy issues, uniform issues. At long last, the Score Tool (1:24:13) is only a partial respite, with some small problems of its own. They consider some of the soundtrack songs, including "Ghetto," "Hardball," "Big Poppa," "Where the Party At," and R. Kelly. Acting (1:30:21) considers the ceiling and floor of a slightly mis-cast Keanu Reeves. Diane Lane was trying, John Hawkes had an impossible task, D.B. Sweeney deserves better. Young actors Michael B. Jordan, Bryan Hearne, Julian Griffith, and DeWayne Warren almost save the movie. Neither Delightfulness of Catcher (1:39:26) or Delightfulness of Announcer (1:40:27) offer much. In Lack of Misogyny (1:41:00), they discuss the insipidity of the lame romantic subplot. No spoilers on the following segments: Yes or No (1:45:06), Six Degrees of Baseball (1:48:56), Favorite Moment (1:50:43) Least Favorite Moment (1:53:00), Scene We Would Have Liked to See (1:54:54), Dreamiest Player (1:56:50), Favorite Performance (1:57:09), and Next Time (2:00:32).  Join Our Discord & Support The Show: PL+ | PL Pro - Get 15% off Yearly with code PODCASTProud member of the Pitcher List Fantasy Baseball Podcast Network Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Delroy Lindo Deserves a Dang Oscar

On this week's episode, I'm joined by Katey Rich and Christopher Rosen of The Ankler to preview the awards season and give you tips on what to check out (spoiler: Hamnet's gonna be a big one this year) and discuss the exquisite art of Oscar prognostication. (If you enjoy this episode, make sure to check out The Ankler's Prestige Junkie newsletter and show.) For the record, you can see my nomination guesses here at the Ankler Pundits site. One of the things we delve into is the weird position Oscar pundits find themselves in, as they are torn between portraying the world as it is and trying to subtly change things to reshape the world in their image, as the predictions themselves have been known to shape the outcome of races. And that's why I am staking a claim here: Delroy Lindo deserves a god-dang Oscar nomination for his work in Sinners.  Look, don't get me wrong: Lindo has deserved Oscar gold for some time. He absolutely deserved it for his work in Da Five Bloods, for instance. But I celebrate the man's entire body of work. I would give him a lifetime achievement award simply for his pronunciation of “sesame cake” in Congo. The man's a damn legend and it's about time the Academy gave him his due.  But he especially deserves it for the work he does in Sinners, a movie that seems lined up to snag a whole boatload of Oscar nominations, including best picture. Yes, yes: Michael B. Jordan's dual performance as Smoke and Stack is the showcase of the film. But Lindo's turn as Delta Slim embodies the soul of the movie; he is the embodiment of the life of a musician, of a black musician, in the American South at a time when simply being black could mark you for death. And he's just funny as hell in the role, delivering these slightly off-kilter line reads that no one else could have pulled off.  Give the man his Oscar gold already! At the very least, give him the nomination. The people demand it! Leave your favorite Lindo performance in the comments, if you would. I'd like to prove that this man deserves his plaudits.

[School of Movies 2025] Topping lists for film of the year, this is the first Ryan Coogler-directed film that is his own. Not a comic book adaptation like the Black Panthers, not a legasequel like Creed and not a direct real life account like Fruitvale Station. This one puts Ryan on the map as a genuine visionary and master of his craft. Clarksdale, Mississippi, 1932. Twin brothers, Smoke & Stack (both played by Michael B. Jordan) after returning home with stolen money from gangster shenanigans in Chicago, spend the day setting up an illegal juke joint for the local black community. As the sun goes down and the place starts rocking they attract the attention of some covetous vampires. Rich, bloody, tragic and complex, with otherworldly music, this story will knock your socks off and haunt your dreams. The powerful new documentary Artfully United, arriving in theaters nationwide on October 17, illuminates art's ability to bridge gaps and create understanding. Mike Norice rose up from the gang-filled streets of South Central LA to become a visual artist and sneaker-art designer (making custom paintings and sneakers for celebrities such as Elton John, Mariah Carey, Michael B. Jordan, Tom Cruise and many more). He began painting inspiring murals with uplifting messages in the city's toughest neighborhoods, which led to the Artfully United project — a national, 20-mural series he designed, using his art and vision as an unparalleled source of hope. That project not only brought Norice attention from political leaders and local activists but most crucially, let the children and those in distress know they have potential and hope for a brighter future.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

This week in complete defiance of our usual routine we made a plan – watch Sinners – and then we actually followed the plan and watched a movie less than six months after it came out!And oh boy, what a movie! In just one film you've got vampire horror, a period drama, a celebration of music and culture in a way we've never seen a film do before, and, in case you missed that the first time, vampires! That are scary. We loved the effects, we adored the music, and we're just gobsmacked by the acting talent, which includes Michael B. Jordan playing two roles and doing it so well that we kept forgetting that was what was happening. Listen in as we basically go squeeeeee for about twenty minutes, with a brief tangent to discuss Bram Stoker's Dracula, a film that is way more enjoyable than you probably remember. This episode's outro is a clip from Electronic Crystals by Joseph Sacco.Looking for a present for that hard-to-shop-for person? It's Spooky Season, and Adrian has never seen Sinners—Ryan Coogler's fantastic vampire film set in the Jim Crow South—so here we go! Released in April 2025, Sinners became one of the year's surprise hits, a box office success built around an original screenplay. The film stars Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as twins who return to their Mississippi hometown to open a juke joint—only to find themselves under attack by vampires. Swain and Adrian discuss their relationships with vampire movies, the racial themes at play in Sinners, and the deeper questions the story raises—including whether the film's villain, Remmick, might actually have a point. They also spotlight Sinners' terrific supporting cast—Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, Delroy Lindo, and breakout star Miles Caton. Keeping it one hundred, they offer a few critiques as well, including the movie's uneven pacing and thoughts on "that" scene. Overall, Sinners is a blast, and we think it earns a solid spot in the horror genre and within what we'll gladly call the Black Horror Canon.

Michael B. Jordan doubles down as twin brothers fleeing Chicago's underworld, only to unearth a nest of bloodsuckers who make eternal life look like a bad sharecropper deal. Tonight on Triple Feature, we peel back more than just plot—this episode explores how each film was built, the bold choices behind them, and what makes them tick both on screen and in the cutting room.First, Sinners, the ambitious 2025 hybrid of Southern Gothic horror, musical, and supernatural thriller from Ryan Coogler. Coogler not only directed but wrote and produced, putting this deeply personal project through his Proximity Media banner. It was rumored to have sparked a fierce studio bidding war early on. The film was shot over spring and summer 2024 on location in Louisiana, and it pushed technical boundaries by being shot on 65 mm film—including IMAX 15-perf and Ultra Panavision 70 formats—allowing Coogler and cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw to shift between widescreen and immersive aspect ratios. Coogler also consulted real-life twins to help Michael B. Jordan ground his dual roles—Smoke and Stack—with distinct emotional and physical nuances. The production even reused costumes originally designed for Blade after that project shifted direction, thanks to designer Ruth E. Carter.Sinners is more than a genre film: it's built with weight, history, and intention, demanding you think about racially charged myth, redemption, and community as much as it scares you.Next up is Drop, directed by Christopher Landon and co-written by Jillian Jacobs & Chris Roach. On paper, it's a taut thriller: a widowed mother on her first date in years suddenly receives chilling anonymous messages via “DigiDrop” threatening the lives of her son and sister unless she follows orders—including committing murder. But behind that premise, the film draws from a real-life anxiety: the idea of unexpected AirDrops in public spaces. Production began in Ireland in April 2024, and the movie's contained setting (almost entirely within a restaurant and tied intimately to a digital device) turned constraint into tension. The director even explained that the final act's identity reveal and pivot underwent dramatic changes deep into post-production. The villain behind “Let's Play” commands the narrative with digital terror—a modern twist on classic “phone call from nowhere” horror tactics.Lastly, Echo Valley brings us out of the city and into Pennsylvania farmland, where Julianne Moore plays a horse trainer whose life becomes entwined with the state of her daughter, played by Sydney Sweeney. The screenplay, penned by Brad Ingelsby, layers in addiction, familial secrets, and the quiet violence that festers in isolated communities. Moore anchors the emotional ground, imbuing her character with both grief and steely resolve, while Sweeney provides the restless, volatile counterpart. The tension in Echo Valley often breathes through landscape and silence—what's not said becomes as dangerous as what is. The film has been praised for allowing Moore and Sweeney to take the emotional reins and carry scenes with minimal exposition, trusting the actors and the visuals to convey the weight.Three films. Three different modes of storytelling: Sinners with its genre-bending ambition and technical daring; Drop with its high-concept, digital-age suspense and careful spatial design; Echo Valley with its character-driven brood and sense of place. All three ask us to lean in—not just watch, but feel the mechanics behind them. Strap in.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

As always, we're discussing with full spoilers. We're tracing Sinners' path from conception to theatre, from Coogler's visit to a cotton plantation outside of Atlanta, to discovering Miles Caton and treating Jack O'Connell like Beyonce, to one of the best theatre experiences of the year. This film trusts its audiences in ways that recent blockbusters haven't, so we're getting into some of the details that make up this (our?) world: Hoodoo, the Great Migration, Juke Joints, Choctaw vampire hunters, we've got it all.Plus, Erin breaks down how Ludwig Goransson's blues-based score helps tell this story of racism, colonialism, and vampires. And how did we feel about the big Generations dance scene? The answer may surprise you!Next week we're taking another look at racial and colonial attitudes in the south with John Sayles' LONE STAR (1996)

The Art of a Deal with the Devil: on Faustian Bargains from Shakespeare and Goethe to Thomas Mann and Donald Trump

For anyone who has seen Michael B. Jordan's excellent new movie Sinners, it's clear that any sort of deal with the devil - what has become known as the Faustian Bargain - is still very much alive. So relevant, in fact, that cultural historian Ed Simon has a book, just out in paperback, about its enduring relevance entitled Devil's Contract. From Shakespeare and Goethe to Thomas Mann and Donald Trump, Simon argues, the Faustian Bargain is more than just a literary trope. In fact, he suggests, it is as relevant today, in our social media age of the Mephistophelian Donald Trump as it was in the German Reformation of the equally populist Martin Luther. The Art of a Deal with the Devil. And we all know how it ends. Go and see Sinners. Spoiler warning: not without the spilling of a great deal of innocent blood. 1. The Faustian Bargain is Fundamentally About Irrationality Despite knowing the terrible consequences, Faust signs the contract anyway. As Simon explains, "if you know that the devil is real and that the Devil collects souls at the end of your life, then like you'd never sign on the dotted line. And yet these characters continually do." This captures our human tendency to act against our own best interests.2. The Contract Makes It Modern What distinguishes the Faust legend from earlier devil stories is the literal paperwork. Simon argues this bureaucratic element - signing on the dotted line - transforms it into a distinctly modern tale about legal systems, capitalism, and bureaucracy. It's not just about temptation; it's about documentation.3. AI is Our Latest Faustian Bargain Simon sees artificial intelligence as having "a shockingly obvious kind of Faustian gloss" - from the magic of conjuring something from nothing to the environmental destruction of massive server farms. We're trading our future for technological convenience, knowing the costs.4. Trump is Mephistopheles, Not Faust In Simon's reading, Trump isn't the one making the deal - he's the devil others make deals with. JD Vance becomes the perfect example: fully aware of what Trump is, yet "willing to seemingly abandon whatever principles he may have had in the past... for power alone."5. Sometimes Faust Wins (But Usually Doesn't) While Goethe's Faust finds redemption and salvation, most versions end badly. The American "Yankee Faust" tries to trick the devil but still gets his house burned down. The lesson? You might think you're clever enough to beat the devil, but the house always wins.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. Yikes, folks! Why are all members of the Fantastic Four under legal drinking age in this movie? Why did we need to see Reed and Ben as little kids at the beginning like it's some bad studio comedy from the 1990s?
