Full Text of ReadingsThursday of the Second Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 314The Saint of the day is Saint Marianne CopeSaint Marianne Cope's Story Though leprosy scared off most people in 19th-century Hawaii, that disease sparked great generosity in the woman who came to be known as Mother Marianne of Molokai. Her courage helped tremendously to improve the lives of its victims in Hawaii, a territory annexed to the United States during her lifetime (1898). Mother Marianne's generosity and courage were celebrated at her May 14, 2005, beatification in Rome. She was a woman who spoke “the language of truth and love” to the world, said Cardinal José Saraiva Martins, prefect of the Congregation for Saints' Causes. Cardinal Martins, who presided at the beatification Mass in St. Peter's Basilica, called her life “a wonderful work of divine grace.” Speaking of her special love for persons suffering from leprosy, he said, “She saw in them the suffering face of Jesus. Like the Good Samaritan, she became their mother.” On January 23, 1838, a daughter was born to Peter and Barbara Cope of Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany. The girl was named after her mother. Two years later the Cope family emigrated to the United States and settled in Utica, New York. Young Barbara worked in a factory until August 1862, when she went to the Sisters of the Third Order of Saint Francis in Syracuse, New York. After profession in November of the next year, she began teaching at Assumption parish school. Marianne held the post of superior in several places and was twice the novice mistress of her congregation. A natural leader, three different times she was superior of St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse, where she learned much that would be useful during her years in Hawaii. Elected provincial in 1877, Mother Marianne was unanimously re-elected in 1881. Two years later the Hawaiian government was searching for someone to run the Kakaako Receiving Station for people suspected of having leprosy. More than 50 religious communities in the United States and Canada were asked. When the request was put to the Syracuse sisters, 35 of them volunteered immediately. On October 22, 1883, Mother Marianne and six other sisters left for Hawaii where they took charge of the Kakaako Receiving Station outside Honolulu; on the island of Maui they also opened a hospital and a school for girls. In 1888, Mother Marianne and two sisters went to Molokai to open a home for “unprotected women and girls” there. The Hawaiian government was quite hesitant to send women for this difficult assignment; they need not have worried about Mother Marianne! On Molokai she took charge of the home that Saint Damien de Veuster had established for men and boys. Mother Marianne changed life on Molokai by introducing cleanliness, pride, and fun to the colony. Bright scarves and pretty dresses for the women were part of her approach. Awarded the Royal Order of Kapiolani by the Hawaiian government and celebrated in a poem by Robert Louis Stevenson, Mother Marianne continued her work faithfully. Her sisters have attracted vocations among the Hawaiian people and still work on Molokai. Mother Marianne died on August 9, 1918, was beatified in 2005, and canonized seven years later. Reflection The government authorities were reluctant to allow Mother Marianne to be a mother on Molokai. Thirty years of dedication proved their fears unfounded. God grants gifts regardless of human shortsightedness and allows those gifts to flower for the sake of the kingdom. Click here for more on Saint Marianne Cope! fWotD Episode 2794: George E. Mylonas Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Saturday, 28 December 2024 is George E. Mylonas.George Emmanuel Mylonas (Greek: Γεώργιος Μυλωνάς, romanized: Georgios Mylonas, Greek pronunciation: [/ʝe'oɾʝios myːlo'nas/], ye-OR-yios mee-loh-NAS; December 21, [O. S. December 9] 1898 – April 15, 1988) was a Greek archaeologist of ancient Greece and of Aegean prehistory. He excavated widely, particularly at Olynthus, Eleusis and Mycenae, where he made the first archaeological study and publication of Grave Circle B, the earliest known monumentalized burials at the site.Mylonas was born in Smyrna, then part of the Ottoman Empire, and received an elite education. He enrolled in 1919 at the University of Athens to study classics, joined the Greek Army, and fought in the Greco-Turkish War of 1919–1922. He witnessed the destruction of Smyrna in September 1922, and was subsequently taken prisoner; he was recaptured after a brief escape, but was released in 1923 after bribing his captors with money sent by his American contacts. In 1924, Mylonas began working for the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, with which he retained a lifelong association. He became its first bursar the following year, and took part in excavations at Corinth, Nemea and Olynthus under its auspices. After receiving his Ph. D. from the University of Athens in 1927, he moved to Johns Hopkins University in the United States to study under David Moore Robinson, his excavation director from Olynthus. He subsequently taught at the University of Chicago. After a brief return to Greece, during which he taught at a gymnasium and made his first excavations at Eleusis, he was hired by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1931, before moving to Washington University in St. Louis in 1933, where he remained until returning permanently to Greece in 1969. There, he was prominent in the Archaeological Society of Athens and in efforts to conserve the monuments of the Acropolis of Athens.Mylonas's excavation work included the sites of Pylos, Artemision, Mekyberna, Polystylos and Aspropotamos. Along with John Papadimitriou, he was given responsibility for the excavation of Mycenae's Grave Circle B in the early 1950s, and from 1957 until 1985 excavated on the citadel of the site. His excavations helped to establish the chronological relationships between Mycenae's structures, which had been excavated piecemeal over the preceding century, and to determine the religious function of the site's Cult Center, to which he gave its name. He was awarded the Order of George I, the Royal Order of the Phoenix and the Gold Medal of the Archaeological Institute of America, of which he was the first foreign-born president. His work at Mycenae has been credited with bringing coherence to the previously scattered and sporadically published record of excavation at the site. At the same time, his belief that ancient Greek mythical traditions, particularly concerning the Trojan War and the Eleusinian Mysteries, could be verified by archaeological excavation was controversial in his day and has generally been discredited since. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:30 UTC on Saturday, 28 December 2024.For the full current version of the article, see George E. This episode's guest is someone that many have known for her longstanding leadership in international education, but some of us might not have known her as a businesswoman, a political leader, a caregiver, and as a newly minted author. Marlene M. Johnson was the Executive Director and CEO of NAFSA: Association of International Educators for almost two decades and prior to that was Minnesota's first woman Lieutenant Governor. She is co-founder of the Minnesota Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners and the Minnesota Women's Campaign Fund. She is now on the advisory board of Kakenya's Dream, a board member of the Washington Office on Latin America, and a trustee of the Alexandria Trust. In this episode we go behind the scenes with Marlene about her life and her new book, Rise to the Challenge: A memoir of politics, leadership, and love. Episode highlights: Marlene's reflections about her life's journey and how the book came about. How Marlene's career in politics and business and her early international exposure prepared her to be a non-traditional candidate yet a good fit for the role of NAFSA's CEO and Executive Director. The “ability to punt” and how this attribute served Marlene well while leading NAFSA, whether it was weathering the Asian financial crisis that impacted Asian international students or the impact of 9/11 on the international education sector. Marlene's legacy of calling for a national policy on international education and her thoughts on where we stand now. Is the U.S. poised to have its first woman president and one whose life—coincidentally—reflects the legacy of international education? Marlene weighs in. The poignant love story of Marlene's life with her husband, Peter, and how their relationship influenced her and shaped her as a leader. Marlene's top 2-3 pieces of advice for women leaders. We also talk about the mayor George Mills and the police chief Orval Cooney (both Jesters), and Monty walks us through the Des Moines Register as a nexus for fascism and pedophilia. I explain the curious connection of the Gab Line and the phone company. Monty explains the appearance of Sam Soda as well as Noreen Gosch's claims, and we return to Mills and Cooney. We try to make sense of Gunderson's and Bonacci's claims. All of this led us inexorably back to Omaha. episode art by Dakota (@DEEP_RED_BELLS) Songs: [515] and People = Shit by Slipknot Gently by Slipknot New Abortion by Slipknot

[originally published on Patreon Jul 14, 2023] I'm rejoined by Monty (@MontyBaby7) to conclude (I thought) our conversation on Freemasonry by exploring the Dark Carnival of the Royal Order of Jesters. To set the stage, Monty lays out the history of the Shriners, from which the Jesters are an outgrowth. Then we explore the history of the Jesters, the imagery, the rites and themes, and the evil Billiken egregore. We explore the strong likelihood of the Jesters being engaged in tax and securities fraud. Then we get a bit out there exploring the Indiana connections to the Jesters and the intelligence community. From that point, Monty and I go through the multiple cases of human trafficking involving the Jesters. Then we attempt to understand the legacy of Freemasonry through the ages into the 21st century. episode art by Robert Voyvodich @r.voy__ Songs: Hokus Pokus by ICP I'm Just a Clown by Charley Crockett  Crazy Clown Time by David Lynch Cathy's Clown by the Everly Brothers

Full Text of ReadingsTuesday of the Third Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 318The Saint of the day is Saint Marianne CopeSaint Marianne Cope's Story Though leprosy scared off most people in 19th-century Hawaii, that disease sparked great generosity in the woman who came to be known as Mother Marianne of Molokai. Much of our discussion today how clowns relate to the Nephilim. What we know to be a "clown" with all its colourful and wacky characteristics is a caricature emulation of sinister beings from the ancient past. These are the infamous giants and genetic abominations of the antediluvian age, the Nephilim. Along with all the chimaera hybrids these beings created during their reign, we now call the spirits of these long-dead monsters, Demons. In their disembodied form, they look like Jesters. Frans Lanting has been hailed as one of the great photographers of our time. For more than three decades he has documented wildlife from the Amazon to Antarctica to promote understanding about the Earth and its natural history through images that convey a passion for nature and a sense of wonder about our living planet.  He has received many honors including Wildlife Photographer of the Year, the Lennart Nilsson Award, The Netherlands' highest conservation honor – the Royal Order of the Golden Ark, the Ansel Adams Award for Conservation Photography, and the Lifetime Achievement Award in nature photography. His latest book is titled: Bay of Life: From Wind to Whales.   Some interesting insights from this episode: ·         Not knowing the rules will make you experiment with anything and everything.  Be aware of the rules but then put them to the side and do things your own way.  ·         His empathy toward animals allows him to capture their personalities which are as distinct as our own personalities.  ·         Unlike the prevailing methods of photographing the animals from a distance, Frans likes to get up close and personal and take his pictures at eye level to create a more intimate interaction.  ·         Too many people are overly fixated with technology but what's most important is knowing what's interesting to you and your connection with the subject in front of you. ·         Unlike painting where you start with a blank canvas, with photography you go in the opposite direction and have to delete as much as possible until there is clarity.  ·         His photography evolved from capturing a single species to capturing the essence of nature as a network of relationships amongst many species.   Notes: Books: Bay of Life: From Wind to Whales Into Africa Bonobo: The Forgotten Ape Other books by Frans Exhibitions: LIFE: A Journey Through Time Bay of Life Website: Frans Lanting
