Australian superannuation fund Aware Super opened its first overseas office in London last year and has wasted little time deploying capital. The fund, which manages A$170 billion ($110 billion; €105 billion) on behalf of predominantly nurses and teachers in Australia, quickly set on a plan to invest £5 billion ($6.3 billion; €6 billion) in the UK. It is almost halfway through that plan and most recently invested $370 million to acquire a stake in renewable energy group Octopus Energy. The merger between Orcon Group (aka Vocus NZ) and 2degrees has cleared its final hurdle after the Overseas Investment Office granted consent.The deal earlier gained Commerce Commission, GCSB and shareholder approvals.Orcon Group chief executive Mark Callander, who will lead the merged business, said: "We expect the transaction to be finalised in the coming weeks and will come together as a combined business on June 1."The combined business would be known as 2degrees, Callander said.Orcon Group's various sub-brands, including Orcon, Slingshot, Flip and 2Talk will continue to be used. The firm also owns a nationwide fibre network spanning more than 4000km, a small power retailer (Switch Utilities) and provisions service for Sky TV's Sky Broadband.The new company will combine 2degrees' mobile network with Orcon Group's more landline-focused business for what analysts see as a stronger number three competitor to Spark and Vodafone.The merged company's combined revenue will be around $1.2 billion next to Spark's $3.59b and Vodafone NZ's $1.95b for 2021.Source / Vocus NZThe merger of Orcon Group and 2degrees operations follows the transaction just approved by the OIO in which Orcon Group's Australian parent, Voyage, bought 2degrees from its US parent Trilogy.Orcon Group and 2degrees put their respective local IPO plans on hold as deal talks began late last year. Liza McDonald is head of Responsible Investment at Aware Super, one of Australia's largest super funds, which means she and her team are not only responsible for the retirement savings of millions of Australians, but they also have shareholdings in companies all over the world, which gives them an opportunity to engage, and maybe even influence these companies to make positive change. Aware Super is not only leading in being one of the largest funds in Australia, it's also leading in terms of its approach to sustainability. They committed to net-zero last year, they've divested from coal, and they're expanding their impact investment footprint. I spoke to Liza about all these topics and more. She was generous in helping us understand her investment and analysis approach, as well as her philosophical view of using investment capital to drive change. We also dug into how Aware Super works with outside fund managers. We discussed the criteria they look for in terms of ESG and sustainability, and their plans to bring more of it in-house. And, a small update on some of the numbers mentioned in the conversation. When we discuss Aware's Impact investment portfolio the current status is 14 assets, valued at $2.9 billion. Financial literacy is a term that excites some, but many people are hard-pressed to get excited about it, despite its importance in how we all view, manage and maximize our money, from our first pocket money as a kid to making retirement savings last these days for up to 30 years after we no longer earn a wage. My guest Julia Newbould is Managing Editor of Money magazine, Australia's most-read personal finance magazine. In this role, she oversees all content for the magazine, website, and podcast.  In June she started the Friends with Money podcast. Prior to that, she had been Editor at Large for the magazine, where she started as the public face of the publication through podcasts, has led webcasts for corporates such as Westpac and Aware Super, as well as TV and radio segments. Through her various positions in financial media, it has been her overarching goal to demystify finance for more people and allow those who want to do more with their money to have greater opportunities to access the best information. Julia has spent the majority of her career in media, combining her academic background in economics and practical experience in journalism, she has contributed and led editorial and content teams for financial services publications and Top 20 ASX listed companies for the past 20 years.
