Today's guest is Nick Johnson, the founder and lead developer of ENS. Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is a distributed, open, and extensible naming system based on the Ethereum blockchain. ENS converts human-readable Ethereum addresses like john.eth into the machine-readable alphanumeric codes you know from wallets like Metamask. The reverse conversion -- associating metadata and machine-readable addresses with human-readable Ethereum addresses -- is also possible. Nick previously worked as a software engineer at Ethereum from June 2016 to August 2018, where they implemented a trending system to identify trending terms on Lumi, improved integration with Twitter, and made significant improvements to the efficiency, scalability, and monitoring of backend systems. Prior to Ethereum, Nick worked as a senior software engineer at Google from June 2014 to June 2016. At Google, they were a primary point of contact for external developers with questions and problems using Google App Engine, and they wrote client libraries and SDK code to improve the user experience with App Engine. Nick also wrote extensive technical blog posts to help users with specific App Engine technologies, and they gave talks at high profile technical conferences around the world on subjects related to App Engine development. Nick Johnson completed a BSc in Computer Science at the University of Canterbury. We discuss a variety of topics including ENS, Digital Identities, Ethereum, Web3, and much more. We begin our conversation by discussing Nick's journey to crypto and why he is so passionate about wallet addresses. Nick shares his first experience with Bitcoin but didn't really understand the value proposition. Nick explains how crypto eventually clicked for him when he discovered Ethereum. Nick shares his experience working for the Ethereum foundation. We discuss the various tradeoffs between working for startups versus the corporate environment. Nick shares how NameCoin was an inspiration for ENS and how they were able to learn from NameCoin's mistakes. We discuss what we are most excited about the upcoming trends for 2023. Nick shares why he is very excited of ZK-rollups. We discuss the relationship between ENS labs and the ENS DAO. We focus on the future of DAOs and why it is so disruptive. We discuss the organizational structure of DAOs and the importance of proper identity verification practices for DAOs. Nick explains the importance of removing the politicking and governance capture in DAOs. We discuss how Web3 enables people to own their digital identity. Our final conversation topic centered around ENS's 2023 roadmap. Nick discusses their upcoming Name Wrapper and their commitment to long term sustainability. Please enjoy my conversation with Nick Johnson.

There is no touching in the metaverse, no floral fragrances in Web3, and DeFi is distinctly flavourless. The promise of the digital world is a stark – because minimalism is encouraged due to development constraints – existence without the comforts of life. But artists like Jan Hendrik Viljoen, better known as Portchie, are bringing beauty to our second lives and making a little bank with Non-Fungible Tokens. Artist Kevin McCoy claims that he was the first person to mint an artwork NFT. The pixelated, colour changing octagon called Quantum was minted on the Namecoin blockchain in May 2014. Anil Dash developed the technical specification and the pair demonstrated the practical application at a Seven on Seven hackathon that connected technologists to artists. The name this pioneering duo chose for their new creation was Monetised Graphics. It obviously didn't stick, and they didn't patent their idea. And then, like all things that started with the best intentions, the internet got hold of it. Dash would later right an ode to his bastardised idea in the Atlantic. “If you liked an artwork, would you pay more for it just because someone included its name in a spreadsheet? I probably wouldn't. But once you leave aside the technical details of NFTs, putting artworks on the blockchain is like listing them in an auction catalog. It adds a measure of certainty about the work being considered.” “By default, copies of a digital image or video are perfect replicas—indistinguishable from the original down to its bits and bytes. Being able to separate an artist's initial creation from mere copies confers power, and in 2014 it was genuinely new.” Cycling by the Riverside is built on Ethereum, a blockchain that allows artwork creation and ownership to be authenticated and transferred. The NFTs are represented by unique tokens stored on the network and act as a permanent, tamper-proof record of provenance and ownership. Start your NFT journey today! The Coin Bureau Podcast: Crypto Without the Hype

Once Bitcoin started to gain traction, it became inevitable that other cryptocurrencies would start to appear. And so the altcoins were born.    An altcoin - as you may remember from the last episode - is any cryptocurrency that isn't Bitcoin. There are now thousands of altcoins in existence, but the flood began as a mere trickle with the release of Namecoin in 2011. Slowly, other altcoins began to emerge - some of which are still with us today, many of which have faded into obscurity.   In this episode, we look at a few of the most notable altcoins to break out in the decade following Bitcoin's entrance into the world. As so many are no longer relevant, we've focused mostly on the ones that have survived in some way, shape or form. It's a useful look into crypto's past, which will help us better understand its present over the course of future episodes.    This episode will also serve as a useful primer for our upcoming series of episodes about the king of all the altcoins: Ethereum.   Some interesting chapters and snippets about altcoins can be found in several of the books we've referenced before. These include:   Bubble or Revolution? (2021), by Neel Mehta, Adi Agashe and Parth Detroja The Age of Cryptocurrency (2015) by Paul Vigna and Michael J. Casey   We hope you enjoy the show.   Producer for iHeart Media: Noel Brown Editor: Sam Moult See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Until recently buying Rare Pepes or Spells of Genesis NFTs on Bitcoin has been complex and dangerous. So much so, that I never recommended it to anyone because of the inherent risks. Those days, thankfully, are over because of the work that Shannon has done building Emblem Vault. Which provides an easy and transparent way for owners of NFTs on other chains (principally Bitcoin and Namecoin) to place their asset in an Emblem Vault and then list and sell it as a normal NFT on Opensea. Think of it in the same way that a wrapper was needed to be able to trade Curio Cards on Opensea - in the same way, Emblem Vault is allowing this to work across other blockchains. It really is quite revolutionary and should be huge for those NFTs living on other chains.

The three dig into the opportunities and challenges of crypto - in particular the problem of incentivizing development and measuring progress on crypto networks early on. 00:41 Introductions. 01:29 Patrick: "Nic, can you talk about Proof of Reserves?" 01:42 Nic: "I'm on a one man quest to get exchanges to institute proofs of reserves." 03:34 Nic: "Coinfloor created a proof of reserve for 60 months running." https://www.coinfloor.co.uk/ 03:57 Patrick: "You're seeing similar things in the dapp space, where you have these dapp stores that are effectively ranking dapps based on transaction throughput and volume." 04:13 Patrick: "What's happening is people who are cheerleaders for the apps are simulating activity." 04:52 Nic: "We have the precise problem at Coin Metrics." 0:05:28 Nic: "The objective becomes to game the ranking and create a semblance of vibrancy." 06:21 Patrick: "My sense is that the dapp stores that continue to participate in a Red Queen's race... are going to be the ones that people don't trust and will leave for better alternatives." 06:55 Patrick: "Jude, do you have any opinion on the tradeoffs of free transactions in the long term and why a crypto network would not want to bias their network in that way?" 07:08 Jude: "Before I answer that, there's no such thing as a free transaction - somebody is still going to have to pay for it." 07:31 Jude: "I expect some of these platforms are biting the bullet right now to make it look like there is activity." 07:56 Patrick: "Why would you want to stay away from that from a long term perspective?" 08:07 Jude: "My favorite story about this goes back to the early 2000s when Gmail first came online." 08:31 Jude: "Someone created Gmail FS, which let you use it as a file backup. If you create something akin to free storage, someone is going to turn it into their backup solution." 10:21 Nic: "The Bitcoin SV case study recently, where they kept orphaning blocks because they were making them too big is a cool real-world example of these cautionary tales we told ourselves for years and years." 10:53 Nic: "So Blockstack uses Bitcoin as the anchor layer, is that right?" 10:57 Jude: "Yes. ... Right now we're building the second generation Stacks blockchain." 12:26 Nic: "Do you have independent validation on the Stacks chain? Or is it all dependent on Bitcoin's own security?" 12:33 Jude: "We just use the hashpower and the difficulty of reorganization from Bitcoin." 12:45 Jude: "We use a novel consensus protocol called proof of burn, where instead of destroying electricity to produce tokens - like a Proof-of-Work system - you destroy an existing cryptocurrency to produce Stacks blocks." 13:11 Nic: "I think this is in a class of a new set of blockchains anchoring themselves to Bitcoin - Fairblock being another easy example." 13:59 Jude: "Ethereum lowered the barrier of entry for creating your own alt coin." 14:13 Patrick: "Nic, how'd you get into Bitcoin?" 14:18 Nic: "I was really big on Reddit from 2010 onwards... and Bitcoin was fairly prominent on all the tech subreddits." 15:44 Nic: "Professionally, I got into crypto while doing a Masters in Finance where I sought to learn valuation techniques and apply the ones from equity valuation to cryptocurrency, which proved to be an impossible task." 16:21 Nic: "Coming out of school, I got connected to folks at Fidelity, who were super progress about Bitcoin." 17:36 Patrick: "Aside from finance, you also studied philosophy, right? How did that shape your view on this space?" 17:58 Nic: "One concept I think about a lot from my philosophy degree is the 'ontology of blockchains'." 20:08 Patrick: "Circling back to your role in VC - outside of Bitcoin, what other public blockchains interest you?" 20:47 Nic: "If you're building on the 20th most popular smart contract platform, there's a very real chance the main developers give up and you'll be marooned on this obsolete chain." 22:07 Jude: "Our co-founder, Muneeb, used to tell the story of how Blockstack was originally going to run on Namecoin." 22:49 Jude: "One mining pool controlled over 60% of Namecoin... for months... and no one noticed or cared." 23:41 Nic: "This reminds me of a pretty entertaining episode of my startup, Coin Metrics." 25:27 Nic: "We still get bugs on Bitcoin. We had a critical one recently." 25:33 Jude: "I predict that if such a bug like that got exploited... miners would unwind the chain to mitigate it before developers had a chance to patch it." 26:16 Jude: "Bitcoin is more than just software. It's a social contract realized as a software artifact." 27:41 Nic: The interesting thing about forks is there are very few cases where the developers didn't bless the chain that ended up winning." 28:53 Jude: "Unless it's a case like Monero where it's one person being a jackass and that person gets jettisoned." 29:43 Jude: "I think people get very emotionally invested in whatever fork they prefer, whether or not there's a crypto token involved." 30:14 Nic: "I think it's been a myth in crypto in 2017, which is that developers are mercenaries and we need to fund them exclusively with built-in inflation from the protocol." 30:47 Nic: "And I would say in some cases it's a risk - take the Zcash situation." 31:59 Jude: "With systems like Zcash's founder's reward, beneficiaries can get complacent because they receive the reward either way, whereas with Blockstack's app mining system, you have to compete all the time to receive a reward." 32:17 Patrick: "I definitely see crypto as inherently political." 33:37 Patrick: "In our initial version of app mining, we actually learned a lot of really valuable lessons." 35:03 Nic: "What's the aggregate value of rewards being paid out through app mining?" 35:07 Patrick: "$100,000 per month in bitcoin." 35:25 Patrick: "Subject to SEC Reg A filing, that would become $1,000,000 per month." 36:28 Nic: "I have to say... Blockstack's SEC filing was the first disclosure I ever read that was sufficient for a token raise." 38:42 Nic: "Are app mining tokens granted to developers or users?" 39:10 Patrick: "Our goal is really to make developers as happy as possible while also being as fair as possible." 39:34 Nic: "Where would you situate Blockstack in the existing ranking of dapp platforms?" 0:40:13 Patrick: "I think we're #1." 40:43 Patrick: "Our mission is really upgrade the Internet." 41:51 Patrick: "The Internet we're operating on today is really like a third world country where people don't have property rights." 43:21 Nic: "So much of the time in crypto we recreate these messy and ugly human institutions like voting driven governance that becomes cartelized in short order, or corrupted." 44:37 Nic: "One thing I critique a lot is this modeling of humans as what I call 'rationality vending machines'." 45:41 Jude: "A lot of these governance systems are designed by people maybe qualified to write software, but certainly not qualified to develop political systems." 46:35 Nic: "Jude, so you would prefer that there's always a way to veto these systems or shut them down?" 46:43 Jude: "Absolutely. ... It is a direct hedge against long term mining consensus centralization on the Bitcoin mining network. Vertcoin achieves its mining consensus solely through Graphics Cards as they are the most abundant / widely available consensus devices that produce a reasonable amount of hashrate. This is done using a mining algorithm that deliberately geared against devices like ASICs, FPGAs and CPUs (due to botnets) making them extremely inefficient. Consensus distribution over time is the most important aspect of a blockchain and should not be taken lightly. It is critical that you understand what blockchain specifications mean/do to fully understand Vertcoin.

Ansel Lindner has been one of the most important people in my bitcoin journey, his Bitcoin and Markets podcast was the first staple of my bitcoin podcast rotation. In this long, ranging, late night discussion with Ansel we get into his bitcoin history, discuss Bcash, Ethereum and the former bitcoiners who jumped ship to lead those communities. We discuss why bitcoin is different and what bitcoin maximalism means to us. We talk Austrian economics and the ethics of money production. Toward the end we get a bit cosmic, discussing how bitcoin affects the human spirit and the coming bitcoin-fueled human renaissance. Discussions like these are what I’m here for and why I’m a dedicated bitcoiner. If you appreciate the pod, it would be a huge help if you took a minute to leave a rating and review wherever you get your podcasts! Namecoin is an alternative cryptocurrency, or altcoin, modeled after Bitcoin. Furthermore, it is the first altcoin in the sense that it was the first to create its own block chain, separate from Bitcoin’s. Namecoin shares many similarities with Bitcoin, including the same method for proof-of-work, the same coin cap, the same block creation time, and all of the same transaction operations. Namecoin was inspired after discussions about a BitDNS protocol using a block chain to manage a domain name lookup service.

A brilliant fact about crypto-economic blockchains is that they enable the construction of naming systems that transcend limits imposed by Zooko’s triangle. Traditional naming systems such as human names, Domain Name System (DNS) and Facebook profile names are subject to Zooko’s triangle and cannot be secure, human memorable and decentralised at once. For instance human names such as Meher Roy are human-memorable and decentralised but not secure (nothing prevents hundreds of people being called Meher Roy). Domain Names like are secure and human-memorable but require a central authority to hand out names. OneName leverages Bitcoin to build a Global Identification system called blockchain ID. Blockchain IDs for users can be associated with real world identity data such as social media profiles, government issued papers etc. In this episode we converse with Ryan Shea and Muneeb Ali, co-founders and leaders of OneName, Blockstore and BlockStack. They explain the rationale and vision behind their push for a Global Decentralised Identification and Verification system. Topics covered in this episode: Zooko’s triangle and how Bitcoin breaks the triangle The general idea behind blockchain ID, how it works and its component transactions Why OneName migrated their blockchain ID system from the Namecoin to the Bitcoin blockchain Technical design of Blockstore and how it enables decentralised storage and association of large datasets to blockchain IDs Vision and use cases for Decentralised Identity, authentication and identity verification. The notion of Probabilistic Identity Episode links: Intentional Naming System Zooko's triangle Why Onename is Migrating to the Bitcoin Blockchain Blockchain ID Organization of Schemas Blockstack BlockStore This episode is hosted by Meher Roy and Sébastien Couture. Amidst all the discussion of alternative uses of blockchains, it is often forgotten that the very first fork of Bitcoin, Namecoin, pursued a daring vision for a decentralized, censorship-resistant internet. Greg Slepak, co-founder of the okTurtles Foundation joined us for an interesting discussion of DNS, Namecoin and how blockchains can be used to decentralize the internet. Topics covered in this episode: What DNS is and the role it plays in the architecture of the internet What man-in-the-middle attacks are and why certificate authorities offer poor protection How certificate authorities, SSL, IP routing and VPNs work Why the current model is broken from a privacy and security perspective How Namecoin and the blockchain could enable a decentralized and more secure internet The security risks when online identity is tied to a private key and how they could be mitigated What DNSChain is and what projects okTurtles is working on Episode links: okTurtles Foundation Namecoin Primer Namecoin Website Airplane Wifi is not safe DNSChain demo This episode is hosted by Brian Fabian Crain and Sébastien Couture.
