Historian Peter Kuznick joins Mickey to discuss the new Christopher Nolan movie “Oppenheimer.” While his overall evaluation is positive, Kuznick notes that the movie fails to address the crucial fact that there was no military need to drop the atomic bomb on Japan. Kuznick also reminds listeners that had Henry Wallace not been replaced as Vice-President by Harry Truman, Wallace would have succeeded to the presidency upon FDR's death in April 1945, and history would've taken a different path (Kuznick believes that Wallace would not have used the bomb, nor started the Cold War). In the second half of the show, Peter Phillips and Bill Tiwald remind listeners of the catastrophe that even a “limited” nuclear war would unleash on humanity, as well as the human and financial costs of maintaining nuclear stockpiles. They explain how New Mexico has borne a disproportionate share of the nuclear burden, and talk about an event they helped organize — the Albuquerque Peace Festival (www.abqpeacefest.org), taking place on August 5. The post OPPENHEIMER MOVIE / WW II LIE / NUCLEAR INSANITY / ABQ PEACE FESTIVAL – Project Censored – August 4, 2023 appeared first on KPFA.

Foto: NDR/Christine Schroeder

Kris & David are joined by John Philapavage (@JohnPhilapavage) to discuss the week that was January 5-11, 1996. We talk about ECW's House Party '96, which featured the farewell of Public Enemy, the return of "The Franchise" Shane Douglas, the debut of Rob Van Dam, and Beulah announcing her “pregnancy” with Tommy Dreamer's spawn. Needless to say, this was a watershed show in ECW history, so we go in deep detail discussing all the major happenings in the promotion at that time. We then go to WCW to discuss Hulk Hogan's legal issues in Minneapolis, plus another Nitro in the Carolinas where Hogan gets booed heavily by the crowd. From there, talk about all the international news and results before coming back to the U.S. for the indies, where we talk about Scott Bowden having quite the day on USWA TV, the early days of IWA Mid-South, and the infamous Bodyguards vs. Bandits PPV being taped at the Sportatorium in Dallas. We then close with the WWF where Shawn Michaels gives an…interesting speech at the Royal Rumble press conference in Fresno, plus the Billionaire Ted's Rasslin' War Room skits get wild in week 2, with this one pissing off a lot of people and becoming the talk of the wrestling world. Oh, and Steve Austin's debut as The Ringmaster airs on that very same edition of Monday Night Raw. In a week that also saw another suicide attack on Kabul, the concert's message was clear; Afghans want peace. Also available in high definition

Black Art and Culture. The 51st Annual Monterey Jazz Festival kicks off this weekend: Sept.19-21; perhaps we can speak to a few artists making their debut this year and a veteran or two or at least feature a song. I am featuring the interview with Patrice Rushen we weren't able to do justice Sept. 12. Tune in. If you miss a segment 'cause you're sleeping or otherwise occupied, listen later at the archives. Of course we'll feature a few selections to get the thoughts and energy rolling in the right direction--center.
