This December, I'm bringing you The Farewell '23 Series, the perfect collection of New Year rituals to do at the end of the year to appreciate the past twelve months, reflect on our experiences, leave some of the unwanted energy behind, cleanse ourselves from it, and just keep what we do want to come with us to the year ahead. All four episodes of The Farewell '23 Series will air on Fridays. On Today's episode, the last episode of 2023, I'm not alone. My friend Julie (from Julie Habits) is joining me, and together we will teach you how to create a vision board, why to call it an action board, why you should make a vision board based on the science behind it and how to do USE it the right way so that it is a powerful tool that helps you manifest your dream life. With the help of the teachings of neuroscientist Dr Tara Swart, author of The Source.Creating a Vision Board/Action Board entails a lot more than building a collage of pictures than inspire you (this is NOT a mood board), it's about truly reflecting about the person you want to become and the things you want to accomplish in life. Julie has prepared a sheet for you to answer questions and think about your life. Here you will find the Vision Board/Action Board Sheet by Julie Habits! Should you ditch them and go for new ones? As Don Miguel Ruiz would say, humans before us have designed a "dream of the planet", or "society's dream", and we've been raised to believe and perpetuate that belief system... Pete Williams, Director of Data and Online at publishing company Penguin Random House UK, shares how he's learned to balance scarce data team talent with reaching business goals Pete Williams has held many data and analytics leadership roles since 2013, in various sectors. But a common challenge across all of them has been the need to manage finite data team resources effectively. In this week's Business of Data podcast, he shares his approach to doing this in a way that balances working towards an organization's long-term strategy with meeting its short-term, tactical goals. “I've been guilty of taking on more work than my team and I could handle in the past,” Williams explains. “You take it on without realizing that little thought has gone into what you actually need to do to achieve something. And before you know it, your scope explodes, and you can't deliver.” How Williams Prioritizes Data Team Projects Williams says his approach helps to deal with what he calls ‘wild card' projects. These are unexpected projects that must be prioritized and can only be delivered by either supplanting the team's current workload or bringing in more resources. Since data team resources are finite, Williams recommends managing them by dividing the team's work between providing ongoing operational and strategic support for the business and research and innovation. He argues that the ability to weigh all potential projects according to a common scale is also vital. Creating a universal template for evaluating potential analytics projects both helps company stakeholders understand the data team's workload and creates a fair system for deciding which projects to deliver first. “A common assessment template gives everybody a chance to pitch for the team's scarce resources,” he explains. An effective project evaluation template should ask questions such as: Will the project generate revenue? Is it cost-efficient? Will it save time? Does it serve an environmental purpose? This will help company stakeholders to agree on which projects should move forwards and which are less likely to drive business impact. Key Takeaways Anticipate ‘wild cards'. Data leaders must allocate team resources to strike the right balance between delivering long-term strategic projects, providing short-term tactical support to business units and working on ad hoc ‘wild card' initiatives Use a common scale to weigh projects. As more projects come in, it will be harder to prioritize them. All work should be considered on the same merits Define what success will look like. Data and analytics project proposals should include defined outcomes that both demonstrate the value they will bring to the business and enable comparison with other projects in the pipeline

This bonus episode is a talk by Zara Korutz for the DePaul Pop Culture Conference "A Celebration of Superheroes". Please join the conference on May 1, 2021 by registering at https://popcultureconference.com/2020-superheroes Abstract: Superman, who is a manufactured entertainment superhero character, can be considered an iconic symbol of the Pop-culture Movement in the 1960s— an era when cultural authorities used zeitgeist philosophies, like ‘Camp’, as a way of deciphering new intellectual approaches to artistic sub-cultural phenomena and social revolutions. Superman’s appearance holds cultural power through iconography which is a visual language of social significance that belongs in a larger contextual social structure as outlined in semiotics (Barthes 1995). Superman’s power is marked by his fashion and is integral to understanding his identity. The often-dramatic transformation from his alter-ego identity allows for the possibility of another truth, and this duality creates a sense of magical escapism which is fundamental to understanding the superhero’s construct— wherein the costume, like a suit, is used as a ‘weapon of style’ (Breward 2016:116) that holds special powers of physical and ideological strength (Brownie and Graydon 2016). Superman’s fashioned muscular body can be understood as a metaphor for transforming queer modes of representation in society into dominant modes through symbols of commodified hegemonic masculine power. Therefore, Superman’s secret is a paradox of perceived truth that is not fixed but relative to the state of being (Basu 2017). Sincere gratitude to Dr. Jane Tynan, Dr. Royce Mahwatte and Dr. Elizabeth Kutesko for their support of this research. References Barthes, R. (1995) The Semiotic Challenge. www.rachelmatthewswriter.co.uk/post/kim-sprague @rachelmatthewswrites / @creativeconnectionspod   My guest this week is Kim Sprague, the founder of Flamingo Life. She has over 12-years experience supporting corporate executives through change, and female leaders to launch and grow businesses, she’s worked with corporate clients such as Three Mobile, Coca Cola, Shelf Help and London School of Business.   Kim has a background in communications and marketing where she worked as a Senior Comms Manager at Penguin Random House UK moving on to the Head of Communications for a government start-up before retraining as a yoga teacher and coach.   She has consciously created her version of balance between coaching, founding Flamingo Life and being a parent. She has recently launched her business mentoring and training membership called the Impact and Income Tribe and will be releasing the next series of her ‘Her Balanced Business’ podcast very soon.   Supporting Yourself Through Change Kim talks me through navigating her own change from a communications and marketing career to retraining as a yoga teacher and later as a business, leadership and career coach.   Increasing Creativity and Maximising Your Potential Kim advocates for projecting a positive kind of energy to draw in what you want, whether that is to be more creative or have more clients, accompanied by a good balance of hustle and flow.   Building Your Confidence and Resilience Through Mindset Kim shares her coaching insights and own experience into increasing creativity, confidence and talks on how they are muscles that can be trained over time. I love how she is open with the amount she has put herself out there in the hope of opportunities, as well as accepting the reality of receiving frequent 'no's early on in her career.   I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I loved chatting with Kim, and if you do, make sure to subscribe to be the first to hear the latest episodes. Thank you!

Welcome to episode two of _How To Go To Work,_ the podcast that accompanies the book _How To Go To Work_ (Penguin, February 2020). Each week authors Lucy Clayton and Steven Haines will be asking guest to take us right back to the beginning of their career. We're not interested in stellar success stories or show off narratives – this is a show about the start of things. However famous our guests are, we start with their Saturday job. Tracking the progress from early work experience through to guest's current life, we examine what was learnt on the way, how the journey developed, how people are held back or inspired further. This week's episode features writer Jude Yawson. He's the co-author and editor of the story of Stormzy's meteoric rise to fame, [Rise Up: The #Merky Story So Far](https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07F7F7MFC/). The first publication from the new imprint [#Merky Books](https://www.penguin.co.uk/company/publishers/cornerstone/merky-books.html) (part of Penguin Random House UK), dedicated to publishing the best new fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Curated by Stormzy, this project forms a home for a new generation of voices. Their book is evocative of a particular point in time and a particular energy, but as the title suggests it's also about beginnings. Join Lucy and Jude as they discuss his journey from being serially excluded from education, to becoming a bestselling author, and everything in between. * [How To Go To Work: The honest advice no one ever tells you at the start of your career — published by Penguin](https://www.amazon.co.uk/How-Go-Work-Honest-Advice/dp/0241399467/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1580036511&sr=8-1) * [BBC Words First](https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/4vMSbh4t5xmTgMCg4NJ6ntQ/words-first-are-you-the-next-spoken-word-star) * [Jude's Vanity Fair piece](https://www.vanityfair.com/london/2019/02/jude-yawson-writing-sustainability-stormzy) Email or follow the show on Twitter, @[howtogotowork](https://twitter.com/howtogotowork/). June 2018 This month it’s all about 007. Bletchley Park has opened a new exhibition in historic Hut 12, featuring memos, letters and personal photographs of Ian Fleming, a fantastic collection of Bond novels through the decades and original, specially commissioned works by talented and innovative artists, inspired by scenes, themes and characters from Bond novels. The Bond creator and author, Ian Fleming, worked in Naval Intelligence during World War Two, and had close links with Bletchley Park. He was the right hand man of the head of Naval Intelligence, so he had the highest level of security clearance. Not only was he allowed to know about the existence of messages intercepted and deciphered by the government’s top secret code and cipher school, he was on the even shorter list of people who were allowed to actually read the messages as well. Fleming’s war work undoubtedly inspired his creation of Bond the character, and the dramatic scrapes he got himself into - and out of. We explore that connection in this episode with insight from the hugely successful author Anthony Horowitz whose second Bond novel, Forever and A Day is out now and he came along to help launch the exhibition. We also look into how Fleming was connected to Bletchley Park in more detail with our research historian, Dr David Kenyon and meet some of the artists who’ve helped immortalise moments from the stories. So pour yourself a martini and immerse yourself in the story of the world’s most infamous spy ... Many thanks to Penguin Random House UK for the use of extracts from the audiobook of Forever and A Day. Image: Goldfinger by Magnus Gjoen #BPark, #Bletchleypark, #JamesBond, #WW2, #ForeverAndADay
