If you haven't listened to the special episode preceding the release of this episode, please do so for all the details. In the news: Cyberpunk 2077 announces a major DLC expansion! But do we care? News: Ubisoft has announced a new Assassin's Creed, and it's FINALLY set in feudal Japan! News: The Nintendo Direct gave us SO much! Hello all, Scott here. We have a special announcement episode for you this week! We will be announcing the next RPG Club game (Phantasy Star IV) as well as some of our plans for the future of the show. The TL;DR is that myself and Rich are stepping down from our positions as co-hosts of the podcast. This decision was not made lightly, but we are burnt out and need to look out for our own qualities of life. However, PLEASE listen to the episode for our full thoughts and feelings on the matter. Personally, I have agonized over the decision for several months and shed tears over it, despite knowing it is what's best for me. As for the future of the show, Rich and I will continue on the regular schedule for the show through this next Phantasy Star IV RPG Club. Bill will be doing his best to continue the RPG Club afterward and you can expect some of the Patreon benefits to be shifted around. There will be more details in the future on this as Bill's plans take shape. Rich and I will still be around and active in the community. All the friends we've made from the RPGAY community is the most rewarding payoff from this venture, and we look forward to continuing our friendships indefinitely. We love you guys! Now let's finish this strong and smash out some Phantasy Star!! Much love! -Scott ====== Please support the show at patreon.com/rpgafteryears Join us on our Discord server! discord.gg/3WPBgur Watch the show live on Twitch! Final Fantasy IV & VI (II & III on the SNES) are considered by many to be among the best in the series. But what about the forgotten Fantasy; Final Fantasy V? I finally played it (no pun intended), and I gotta tell ya, it's just as good. Maybe even a little better. I fucking love it. The story is a little on the shallow side, but the game's extraordinary job system more than makes up for it. The level of customization you're presented with in regards to how you assemble your team is just insane, and it made for one of the best JRPG experiences I've ever had. So good!! My guest this week is longtime show supporter Ben Beaulieu, and we had a hell of a time talking about a hell of a game. It's all about the phenomenal Final Fantasy V this week! And before we talk Exdeath and friends, it's another edition Remember The Game Infamous Intro! This time around, we talk about stuff like backlogs, the upcoming Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad games, and the Super Scope! Plus, we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One'. This time, it's the "RPGs that everyone doesn't talk about all the time" edition, featuring Phantasy Star IV, Secret of Evermore, and Secret of Mana! Are you on social media? Of course you are. This episode of RPGrinders features a release heavy news segment, food sex, time changes, broken political promises, the Sega Genesis tournament, Bone Tomahawk, and Geraldo Rivera! The news is packed with actual release dates! Some games are even out now, like the Bethesda catalog joining Xbox Game Pass. Games like Vaporum:Lockdown and Trails of Cold Steel IV will be releasing within the next couple of months. While the third DLC pack for DBZ:Kakarot and Alchemic Cutie drop this summer. Dear Break Man brings words of wisdom to this episode. Today Break saves the world by answering a question about mixing food and sex. Frank gives his review of Bone Tomahawk. What does Frank think of the horror/western starring the living legend Kurt Russell? The Stinkos take an interesting turn as one of Break's gets a LIVE update and becomes a Sweeto! Unfortunately, the national time shift and the broken promise of a $2000 stimulus check do not make the same change. The battle to determine the greatest Sega Genesis game intensifies! Break and Frank may have finally pushed Eric to his limits, as he is disgusted by their choices! Is Eric right? Have Frank and Break gone to far? What is the Greatest Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Game of All Time? Is Sonic the Hedgehog fast enough to defeat the legacy of the Belmont family? Can Polterguy scare up a win against Phantasy Star IV? Will Boogerman be able to flush his swashbuckling competition? Don't fuck pumpkins. They will turn your penis orange.
One of the greatest, and perhaps most underrated, JRPG's of the 16-bit generation, Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium is a sci-fi epic with a narrative and mechanics before its time. Alexander McConnell joins us to discuss the definitive conclusion to this four game saga, delving into its epic scope, charmingly sleazy protagonists, magical cats, and dad joke-spouting aliens. People write Kirby off these days, and it's a damned shame. His modern games might be too easy and kinda lame, but back in the day he was a beast. And for my money, he was never more beastly than he was in Kirby Superstar. This title was 8 games in 1 (9 in 1 if you want to get technical), and while a couple of the modes were a little lazy, there's a ton of quality meat on the bone here. A clever second player mechanic, absolutely gorgeous graphics, a banging soundtrack and a smorgasbord of cool powers makes this a title that really is worth playing, even today. Former Hall of Fame Mark McCue makes his triumphant return to the podcast this week, and we're explain why all you Kirby haters should stop hatin' and start playing Kirby Superstar! And before we inhale enemies and poop their souls into adorable sidekicks, there's the fabled Remember The Game? intro! Which includes trying to help a community member find their first RPG, the release of a new Commodore 64 (?), another fantastic edition of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', and more! Also, an insanely sincere thank-you to the 'Press Start 2 Join' podcast for sponsoring this episode of the show! As you all know, I'm a former SEGA hater. I grew up on the SNES side of the 90's console wars, and missed out on most of the best games that were exclusive to Sega's little black box. In the last year or so, I've played Shining Force, Shinobi, Ecco the Dolphin; I'm trying to make up for lost time. One of the games that constantly pops up on the "best of" lists when it comes to the Genesis is Phantasy Star IV. So I finally got around to giving it a shot. And while I think calling it "Sega's Final Fantasy VI" is a little extreme, it's pretty good! My buddy Chris is a Sega kid, and we had a good time breaking down the good, the bad, and the ugly about Chaz and friends. If that's all you're here for, skip to 15:00. Before we get into Phantasy Star, I rambled like the old man that I am. I quickly touched on the sheer amount of sales going on in the gaming world right now, and whether or not physical game buyers are finally joining the digital team. Sony is following in Ubisoft's footsteps and giving away games for free to try and get people to stay home, and publicity move or not, I think they deserve some love. Apparently Capcom is remaking Resident Evil 4, and I'll jump on any excuse to sing that game's praises. And finally, I'm playing a lot of video games right now, and I talk about them for a couple minutes. We've done this 92 times, you guys know what to expect. Stay safe and enjoy the podcast!

Tyler and Dave, back in the saddle! Josh (of Uniracers fame) joins us to wrap up our discussion about Phantasy Star IV for the Sega Genesis. We finish talking about the game's story and the rest of the game's cast: Demi, Wren, Kyra, and Seth. If that's not enough to entice you to hit the play button: We sip on Ecto Cooler Iced Tea and talk about circumcision (of the male and female variety!); Dave reveals his suicide notebook; Tyler and Josh talk about the LEGO universe they created; and we read a listener postcard from California. Continue reading → The post Ep. 385 – Phantasy Star IV (Part 3) appeared first on TADPOG: Tyler and Dave Play Old Games.
Please note: There is an important podcast announcement at the top of this episode. Josh was back to talk about Phantasy Star IV, but we ended up talking about The South and Terraria instead. We talk about Fancy Misters and the Immortal Roach. We ask ourselves, "What Would Randy Quaid Do?". There can be only one Chaz! Josh (of Uniracers fame) rejoins us as we continue to discuss Phantasy Star IV for the Sega Genesis. This time we start our delve into the story of Phantasy Star IV, including the introduction to iconic characters like Chaz, Alys, Hahn, Rune, Gryz, and Rika. Some other important stuff happens too! We continue to rummage through Ruby Baron Paul Clewell's package of barbecue sauces; we launch our annual Fruitcake Giveaway; Tyler quotes Tokyo Mew Mew; and we receive a postcard from the Los Angeles Dodgers Stadium. Believe it or not, we are finally talking about Digital Trends' 6th-ranked Sega Genesis game: Phantasy Star IV. We review the game's basic mechanics, and reveal our favorite characters and memories. But wait, there's more! We open a huge package from Ruby Baron Paul Clewell, and Dave's dad calls in to tell us everything he knows about Phantasy Star IV. We take some calls, and (of course) we invent Borat Chess. Continue reading → The post Ep. 381 – Phantasy Star IV (Part 1) appeared first on TADPOG: Tyler and Dave Play Old Games.
It's time for an All Calls episode (well we're really doing it because we need a buffer episode before we talk about Phantasy Star IV but we hope you enjoy it anyway). We play some listener voicemails and read text messages. We answer a magical Would You Rather. We talk about using the bathroom with cats. Sandwich Pope Phil goes through our backlog. Yes, we talk about dolphins again. Continue reading → The post Ep. 371 – All Calls 2: Electric Boogaloo appeared first on TADPOG: Tyler and Dave Play Old Games.

Gary Butterfield and Kole Ross soar through Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium. We're guilty of focusing on Final Fantasy games when we talk about JRPGs because that's mostly what we grew up with. However, concurrently, there was a whole big, important series living and thriving on Sega systems, doing amazing forward looking things before it died an unceremonious death. Phantasy Star IV is considered to be the best, most friendly iteration of the main series, and you should join us to hear about how prescient it was in terms of design. Hey! Listen! We have a big show for you this week, and we kick things off by talking about how awesome Felicia Day is before Patrick gives us the lowdown on the c2e2 convention. Is that Jeff Green guesting on our show? Not quite, but Angelo sounds a little bit like him, and he drops by to talk about Nintendo and other fun things! In Consumption Junction, Angelo brings up some great conversation about video game soundtracks. Patrick's been playing Phantasy Star IV, and the guys talk about gaming "then" and gaming "now". Julian watched Twilight: Breaking Dawn and recoils in terror from CG BABY. He's also jumped onto the 3DS bandwagon, thanks to peer pressure from people like our own Jesse Miller. That leads the crew into a lengthy discussion about Nintendo. Julian's been a vocal "jilted Nintendo lover" for a long time, and talks about his love and breakup with the company. Angelo tells his odd beginnings with the Big N, and Patrick reminisces about his "gaming All-Mother". Julian calls out the hysterical, rabid Nintendo fans, likening them to Alex Jones listeners. Controversial? Probably... After some talk about the state of the Wii U, the guys put on their thinking caps and each reinvent the Nintendo Holy Trinity: Mario, Metroid, and Zelda. As always, their ideas will most likely surprise, entice, and anger you! Let us know how you would reinvent popular Nintendo franchises, and any other comments and feedback on the show.

This week's theme is 1993, in recognition of Daytona USA's recent release on the Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network. Naturally, we have some good old cheesy Daytona tracks, and music from more of SEGA's 1993 titles such as Phantasy Star IV and Sonic the Hedgehog CD.
On this nostalgia-laden edition of Random Encounter the editors of RPGFan sit down to discuss a game that made them the RPG fans they are today: Phantasy Star IV. Listen as Rob, John, Stephen and Derek explain why exactly Phantasy Star IV ranks as one of the best JRPGs of all time. NOTE: This episode contains heavy spoilers for the Phantasy Star series. Featuring: Robert Steinman, John McCarroll, Stephen Meyerink and Derek Heemsbergen
You want to talk Brutal? I had to edit this in Paint. Makes it all jaggy and shit. While a day late and a dollar short, the OSMcast_!_ returns with some _slightly _less than hot off the presses podcasting action! Since the latest season of anime hitting Japan pretty much blows, we’ve discovered that we’ve ended up playing a lot more video games than usual! So we took the whole Moment of OSM/Whatcha Been Playing segment into the entire podcast. ISN’T THIS EXCITING!?! In the end we talk the most about Brutal Legend, but we cover the bases from Uncharted 2 to Phantasy Star IV and a whole bunch inbetween. Old, new, we don’t care! OSMnotes This was supposed to have shown up on the 19th, sure. But Basil’s flash drive died. So we had to find another way to transfer the files (Which ended up being a new flash drive). Then Basil installed Windows 7! Which means all his programs went bye bye and he didn’t realize quite what all that meant until he had to upload and format the podcast for publiscation and stuff. So you can forward all complaints to osmcast@gmail.com. Or any other comments you may have! It’s all good.
