Show NotesUniversity of Denver Sturm College of Law associate professor Govind Persad's newest paper, “Defining Health Affordability,” looks into the phenomenon of how Americans avoid seeking healthcare because of the cost. The meat of his latest research, however, comes down to investigating why we don't have a universal definition for the idea of healthcare affordability. In this episode, Emma chats with Persad, who offers his own definition of health affordability and examines today's American healthcare landscape.Govind Persad's research applies bioethical and distributive justice frameworks to law in order to address longstanding and new problems at the interface of health law and policy.Persad's current projects evaluate potential definitions of health affordability, consider how to integrate health justice and equity into frameworks for the allocation of scarce medical resources, and propose new frameworks for international pandemic response. His research has most recently been supported by a Greenwall Foundation Faculty Scholars Award. He is participating in the Colorado National Wastewater Surveillance System Center of Excellence at DU and serves on the Faculty Advisory Committee for the Scrivner Institute of Public Policy.More Information:"Defining Health Affordability" by Govind Persad“Sue Lowden Stands by Chicken Health Care Barter Plan” CBS News“Pricing Drugs Fairly” by Govind Persad“Americans' Challenges with Health Care Costs” by Lunna Lopes, Marley Presiado and Liz Hamel

Born in Toronto to Indo-Guyanese parents, Hema was taught the value of good work ethic. Regardless of what she's into, she's always going to do it at 110%. Hema found herself constantly chasing fulfillment throughout her many professions, whether that was being a successful lawyer, morphing into an A-list stylist for the likes of Madonna to Andy Samberg, or interior design, Hema was going to figure it out. The biggest lesson in her journey would come from a book that empowered her to be still, wait, and let the answers reveal themselves. And though that approach may sound unorthodox to some, Hema would argue it was life-changing. Co-Founder of Claima and Former Nike Marketer, Bimma Williams interviews leading and emerging creatives and entrepreneurs of color about how they were able to build their own tables by turning their hobbies, side hustles, and ideas into thriving small businesses. It's been a while since we've done a Covid/bioethics podcast (see prior ethics podcasts here, here, here, and here). But Covid is not over and this pandemic keeps raising challenging issues that force us to consider competing ethical considerations. This week, we discuss an article by bioethicists Govind Persad and Emily Largent arguing that the NIH guidance for allocation of Paxlovid during conditions of scarcity. They argue that the current guidelines, which prioritize immunocompromised people and unvaccinated older people on the same level, should be re-done to prioritize the immunocompromised first, and additionally move up older vaccinated individuals or vaccinated persons with comorbidities. The basis of their argument is the ethical notion of “reciprocity” - people who are vaccinated have done something to protect the public health, and we owe them something for taking that action. Eric and I attempt to poke holes in their arguments, resulting in a spirited discussion. To be sure, Paxlovid is no longer as scarce as it was a few months back. But the argument is important because, as we've seen, new treatments are almost always scarce at the start. Evusheld is the latest case in point. Sometimes, you can't always get what you want… -@AlexSmithMD

— Young people and adults alike are bombarded with information about COVID-19 and they need to know how to tell science-based facts from fiction. To beat this pandemic, they need to understand the ways in which the virus spreads and prevent it from proliferating. Because SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, is host dependent and must attach to and live inside the cells of other organisms to survive, it's possible to outsmart and inactivate the virus by first understanding the ways in which it spreads and then by engaging in measures to avoid, inactivate, and suppress its spread. Asymptomatic infections contribute to more than 50 percent of the spread of COVID-19, making transmission hard to control. More alarmingly, “recent increases in COVID-19 associated hospitalization rates and the potential for severe disease in adolescents reinforce the importance of prevention strategies,” writes the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Giving both young people and adults the knowledge for how to recognize how the virus spreads and how to suppress it through individual actions can help thwart infection of the insidious virus. Through understanding and individual responsibility, young people can shield themselves from the grip of the pandemic and move confidently toward a safe return to everyday life. In this episode we talk to Dr. Aaron Persad, CTO and Cofounder of Mission: Space Food. Dr. Aaron is a research engineer and scientist in Space Sciences and Technology with 15+ years of experience in the field. He has designed and built two experiments that were launched to the International Space Station to study how fluids behave in low gravity. Currently, Dr. Persad is CTO and co-founder of Mission: Space Food. He is also Director of Bioastronautics at the International Institute of Astronautical Sciences, where he leads spacesuit validation/verification testing in microgravity. Dr. Persad is also a Research Scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is developing novel membrane-based separation/filtration systems. Previously, he was manager for reduced gravity parabolic flight campaigns for the Canadian Space Agency. As humans inevitably start looking into their long-term future as a spacefaring civilization. One of the pillars of human life — eating — becomes an increasingly important field of multidisciplinary innovation to be able to support life outside of Earth. At the same time, humans have woken up to the fact that the current food systems on Earth are deeply flawed, becoming the primary contributors to the increased rate of climate change and ecosystem degradation, putting all life under existential risk. With an increased interest and investment into going back to the Moon, settling on Mars, and the rise of Space Tourism, the International Space Station (ISS) serves as a platform to prototype the most efficient food systems and meals in microgravity that are both delicious, resource-efficient, nutritious, and sustainable. By re-imagining astronaut food on the ISS, Mission: Space Food creates eating experiences to address the public health and ecological constraints on earth, seeding the eating rituals and flavors for centuries to come. Mission Space Food are a commercial space startup re-imaging space food systems, by combining space sciences and experiential design to fuel your exploration, starting with multivitamin supplements. “I’m not sure what it is with society where people with disabilities are always an afterthought,” says Lakshmee Lachhman-Persad. For Lakshmee, a digital marketer with 20 years of experience in the tourism industry, the issue hits home. Her sister Annie was born with cerebral palsy, so Lakshmee knows firsthand how difficult it can be for a person with disabilities to navigate a city, even one as major and modern as New York, which they call home. In response, Lakshmee launched Accessible Travel NYC, a consultancy and website to help those looking to enjoy what New York has to offer by providing information on restaurants, transportation, accommodations, and more. Lakshmee shares her family’s story and also gives advice for those looking to make their businesses, events, or websites more accessible to the millions of people in this country with disabilities. You can visit Lakshmee’s site at accessibletravelnyc.com. Micro-aggressions are the (usually) unintended insults that people say casually but that often inflict real pain. Natasha Persad conducted a seminar on campus about how to avoid and respond to micro-aggressions. Some people accuse universities of being too sensitive and “politically correct” about language and interactions, but at WestConn we dive right into the controversy. Persad and Paul Steinmetz politely discuss the issue on today’s pod.

The invention of dialysis -- essentially artificial kidneys for people with kidney failure -- revolutionized medicine. It also started a debate about medical rationing and ethics that rages to this day. Producer Cam Steele brings us a story about the God Squad, the group of lay people and doctors tasked with deciding who lived and who died in the early days of dialysis, and how it has informed every debate about medical rationing since. Learn about all this and more, plus a new #AdamAnswers in the latest episode of Bedside Rounds, a tiny podcast about fascinating stories in clinical medicine.
