Poet Sara Moore Wagner takes listeners on a deep dive into the life and legend of Ohio-born sharpshooter Annie Oakley. As the subject of Wagner's latest poetry collection, LADY WING SHOT, Oakley appears as an allegorical figure whose stories are built on both fact and fiction—a woman irrevocably connected to the myth of the American West, the cult of fame, feminism and gender roles, and the history of American gun culture. In addition to Oakley, Wagner discusses craft, her writing process, how she puts a poetry collection together, tips for poets looking to submit their work, and more. Sara Moore Wagner is the author of three prize-winning full-length books of poetry: Lady Wing Shot, winner of the 2023 Blue Lynx Prize; Swan Wife, winner of the 2022 Cider Press Review Editors Prize; and Hillbilly Madonna, winner of the 2022 Driftwood Press Manuscript Prize. She is also the author of two chapbooks, Tumbling After (Red Bird, 2022) and Hooked Through (Five Oaks Press, 2017). She is a 2022 Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award recipient, a 2021 National Poetry Series Finalist, and the recipient of a 2019 Sustainable Arts Foundation award. In 2023, she became the Managing Poetry Editor of Driftwood Press. She teaches Creative Writing part time at Northern Kentucky University, where she recently received their Excellence in Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity award. She lives in West Chester, Ohio. Page Count is produced by Ohio Center for the Book at Cleveland Public Library. For full show notes and an edited transcript of this episode, visit the episode page. Valentine's Day is celebrated on February 14 and to recognize that occasion, we have a special Tales from the Creek episode that we like to call "Love in the Creek." Scott and Sara Jackson and Tony and Ellen Peacock are two of the many couples who met during their undergraduate careers, fell in love, married, and have built a life together. Scott Jackson, class of '98 played seven different positions on the Campbell Baseball team, while Sara Moore, class of 2001 was a starting guard on Campbell's ASUN title-winning 2000 squad and 2001 women's basketball regular season champs. Tony Peacock, class of '96, was a four-year starter who helped the Camels win Big South men's soccer titles in '92 (tournament) and '93 (regular season) and finish as ASUN runner-up in '95 and '96. Ellen Price, class of '97, helped Campbell win its first women's soccer championship in 1993 and reach the ASUN final two years later. After graduation, Scott and Sara were married and they began a journey together that took them to Wilmington, Chapel Hill, and now to Lynchburg, Va., where Scott is the head baseball coach at Liberty University. Tony and Ellen moved to Atlanta in 1998 and have made their home there since among a large international population. In the next installment of Tales from the Creek, Stan Cole talks with Scott, Sara, Tony, and Ellen about how they met at Campbell and their journey as couples and parents.
In this episode of Ambition. Unleashed. Sara Moore and Guest host Justin Temblett-Wood look into how leaders can take an approach of seeking exploration over the need for certainty. A willingness to believe in planning, but not plans, will free leaders from self-imposed prisons that restrict their ability to act and react in uncertain times. It requires bravery to step away from apparent certainty, and insight to understand that certainty is built on context and interpretation rather than reality. If leaders can throw off these shackles and embrace exploration and experimentation, then they will be well-equipped to prepare for, and benefit from, the unexpected and thrive rather than just survive in volatile times. Since I started making this podcast, I've told the stories of a number of children that have involved the failures of the family court system. So many names pop into my head when I think about it: Thomas Valva. Nakota Kelly. Averylee Hobbs. James Biel. Corey Micciolo. Since 2008, over 900 American children have died at the hands of a parent or guardian after involvement with the family court system, which punishes parents – especially mothers – for reporting domestic or child abuse.Ohio mom Sara Moore, who lost custody of both of her boys for that exact reason, has had enough. Earlier this year, Sara pledged to walk a total of 936 miles from Columbus to the White House and back, one mile for each of the 936 who lost their lives due to mistakes made by the family court system. This is the story of an embattled mother who will never stop fighting for her children and the quest she's undertaken to draw attention to the epidemic of family court-related child deaths in this country. This is the inspiring story of 936 Miles for Mercy.Links discussed in this episode: Angels' Voices Silenced No More: https://angelsvoicesnm.org Protect Kids from Family Court: https://www.facebook.com/events/s/protect-kids-from-family-court/1539696220169930/ Sara's GoFundMe campaign: https://www.gofundme.com/f/protect-kids-from-family-court-936milesformercy Center for Judicial Excellence: https://centerforjudicialexcellence.org/ The Saunders study: https://barrygoldstein.net/component/tags/tag/the-saunders-studyUN Special Rapporteur Reem Alsalem's United Nations (UN) report on custody and violence against women and children: https://www.ohchr.org/en/press-releases/2023/06/urgent-reforms-needed-protect-women-and-children-violence-custody-battles-un The Meier study: https://xyonline.net/sites/xyonline.net/files/2020-05/Meier%2C%20U.S.%20child%20custody%20outcomes%20in%20cases%20involving%20parental%20alienation%20and%20abuse%20allegations%202020.pdf CDC page on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs): https://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/aces/index.html Avett Ray on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/2GRjyu6I8E355bDOvv6h8h?si=WhfBBI1WTUqw-2UoRbvE9Q Avett Ray on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEFFl4jVhSQLx-r-08kYtng Avett Ray on Apple Music: https://music.apple.com/us/artist/avett-ray/1661435060 Avett Ray on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/avettray/ Avett Ray on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/avettray/ This episode is brought to you by Factor. In this episode we introduce two profiles of human consciousness: “reactive” and “creative.” Todays world is calling for the ambitious to be less reactive and more creative in our way of “being". Seeing ourselves AS our identity versus simply HAVING an identity is often what gets in our way because if we are our identity we need to preserve it to survive instead of play full out. Wayne and Sara explore this topic with Liberto Perada to find out how we can make this sometimes-difficult separation, and why it is important to unleash the full potential of not only yourself but of everyone around you. Liberto is Managing Director of Leadership Circle Europe, and also founder and facilitator at the consultancy Kanvio (for vitality) working with clients all over the world. Liberto is passionate about evolving a world based on trust and personal power. Where challenges, are references, and not obstacles. Where we use diversity to grow and change our reality from the self and throughout all his work is sourced from a belief that within each of us there is a creativity, power, wisdom and courage. In this episode of Ambition. Unleashed. Sara and Wayne discuss the natural tension we all hold as humans between staying safe and striving for a bolder vision, mission or purpose. Lots of commentators talk about “leading with purpose”, but this is easier said than done. Striving for our true purpose often comes with inherent risk – livelihoods, relationships, our sense of identity, our ego. This leaves many of us “playing not to lose” versus “playing to win.” It can be toxic to the soul to only ever stay safe, but what can we do to bravely take steps towards living more purposefully? To help them answer this, Sara and Wayne sit down with Bob Anderson, a true pioneer in the field of leadership development and research. Bob has dedicated his career to exploring the intersections between leadership and personal mindset mastery and is the founder of The Leadership Circle Profile (LCP), an integrated and innovative leadership assessment tool used by Fortune 500 organisations to develop transformational and more conscious leaders. He's a very profound guy, and as a result their conversation was far reaching – but we encourage listeners to stay tuned, because the insights he offers are extraordinary. In this episode of Ambition. The mindset shift we explore this week is from “predicting the future” to “declaring the future.” Bold declarations are the foundation of great leadership and are hugely powerful. In the previous episode of Ambition. Unleashed. our hosts Sara Moore and Wayne Alexander helped listeners understand how they can make the shift from limited to unlimited possibility – to help you first identity a new future filled with possibility. But this is only the beginning. Declaring that possible future in a public arena will inspire, energise and enrol the world to help you deliver it, even if you don't know exactly how you're going to achieve it. Imagine declaring the future you want to happen instead of predicting what might happen. How would that change the way you approached your ambitions? Leadership is language and making a declaration is a creative act that uses precise, un-caveated terms to bring a possible future into being. Declarations need to be wholehearted and made publicly to those who will hold you to account – remember JFK's declaration to get a “man on the moon before the decade was out”. True declarations are acts of bravery that put you and your ambitions at stake. And with the help of leading Executive Reinvention Coach and former Egg Online Banking Executive from its 90s/00s hey day – Neil Rodgers – Wayne and Sara explore the art and anatomy of making a powerful declaration. Most people if asked to define an ambitious person would say something like “a person who knows what they want and where they're going”, perhaps with a big, hairy, audacious goal in mind - probably motivated by money or notoriety. But Ambition is less about knowing where you're going, but the size of the possibility you can see and would be willing to commit to for yourself and/or your business. This podcast is certainly for the self-identified ambitious, but it's also for those that feel they would like to grow the size of their ambition. In this first episode of Ambition. Unleashed. we introduce you to the mindset shifts we're going to take you through over the next eight episodes. Mindset shifts we believe - without a doubt - are the essential foundations for helping you to identify and achieve your biggest, boldest most breakthrough ambitions. Bought to you by Achieve Breakthrough – a leadership development, transformational change, and workplace culture consultancy to Fortune 500 organisations. Hosted by Sara Moore and Wayne Alexander, both Strategic Leader Consultants at Achieve Breakthrough. In this episode we explore the first mindset shift we believe all ambitious, or ‘like to be more ambitious', people should make if you want to at first identify your biggest, boldest, most breakthrough ambitions. In this week's episode we show you why, how and what you can do to shift from a mindset that may limit your sense of possibility to one that un-limits your sense of possibility. With the help of Stephen Carver – a superb storyteller as well as a Change and Project Management Consultant and a Senior Lecturer at Cranfield University School of Management, we discovering the forces that cause even the most ambitious people to strive what they think they can have versus what they really, truly want. “It's really universal where people can come sit down, watch a film, whether it has subtitles or not, and really just have an emotional response to that film.” Welcome everyone to episode 29 of the It Matters To Me Podcast, a show that celebrates the everyday passions that drive us whether they are just hobbies or our life's work. Today my guest is Sara Moore, Executive Director for Colorado Dragon Boat, the umbrella organization that encompasses the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival, the Colorado Dragon Boat Film Festival, and the Emerging Leaders Program. Born and raised in Michigan, this self-described tomboy heard the mountains calling and moved to Colorado where she's now a leading figure in the Asian American Pacific Islander community. As Executive Director of Colorado Dragon Boat, she promotes its mission by building awareness, knowledge, and understanding between the diverse AAPI cultures and the general public through cultural education, leadership development, and athletic competition. With the upcoming Dragon Boat Festival just a few months away, we get into its fascinating history and rich traditions that date back centuries. We also spend some time talking about its impact on the local community and just how positive of an event it can be for anyone who attends. This was a great, fun and informative talk that definitely has me excited to attend this year's festival. And if you're in the Denver area July 23rd and 24th, I highly encourage you come check it out yourself! Sara Moore had the passion to create a community where home care folks can learn from one another and she but it into action by creating the website AHomeCareCommunity.com. In this special version of home care heroes, Sara speaks with collaborator Jeremy Jed Hammel about the importance of community and core values. Then she speaks with community coach Brian Oblinger about how to grow and nurture an effective community. Finally she wraps up with a "virtual tour" of the "A Home Care Community dot com" website. Some of the great features on A Home Care Community dot com are as follows:Caregiver of the Month awardFree Membership (giving you the ability to collaborate with other community members)Discussion forums with special features, including the following:The "Monday Moore Mantra" featuring inspiration, motivation and actionThe "Tech Talk" with Andrea FahrenbacherState-specific forumsThen there's a rich page of resources ranging from how to manage millennial caregivers to how to comply with the EVV mandate in the 21st Century Cures Act.Learn more at the "A Home Care Community dot com" website.Home Care Heroes is produced and sponsored by Ankota - the Software for the Heroes of Home Care. Agency owners Ophelia Cole and Barbara Gaines are also sisters, Their interview with Sara Moore on the Home Care Heroes Community Edition is heartwarming and informative.A central key to their success strategy is their devotion to pairing the right caregiver with the client, and to confirm the match. If the pair isn't working out well, they make a change. As regular listeners know, the core theme of the home care heroes podcast is caregiver recruiting and retention, and this strategy from Ophelia and Barbara does just that. When a client and caregiver are well-matched the caregiver will have a strong reason to stay with your agency. My favorite moment in the interview is Ophelia's advice for start-ups entering the home care industry. She tells them "stay out of my territory!"Home Care Heroes is produced and sponsored by Ankota - the Software for the Heroes of Home Care. I love being a mom. It’s one of the most difficult and rewarding and all the things jobs I’ve ever had in my life. I’m simultaneously a nurse, a cook, a cleaner, a bedtime singer, a teacher, a caregiver, an errand runner, a boo boo kisser, you know… basically every job on earth rolled into one. But if I’m honest, sometimes being a mom is a really lonely job. I so badly want to connect with other moms, but it can feel like other moms are just going to judge me. Those “mommy wars” are real and hard and I don’t understand why they exist, but they do. Having a supportive community to just CONNECT with other moms is so needed and important and vital. We cannot and SHOULD NOT do life alone. My guest this week is Sara Moore, the founder of Project Mother, a collaborative enterprise of moms striving to encourage and support one another while ALSO fostering ethical commerce. Don't rent a hotel room in Central Florida -- get more bang for your buck by renting a whole house instead. So says Sara Moore, chief marketing officer for All Star Vacation Homes, the leading house-rental firm in Kissimmee. She says houses have more best, less noise, and more amenities than hotels -- often at less cost -- and are ideal for families. That's why the rental home industry is catching fire with both business and leisure vacationers.
