A (relatively) in-depth analysis of American lyricist, singer, songwriter and painter Carole Bayer Sager in just under thirty minutes.Bayer Sager's first recording as a singer in her own right was the 1977 album Carole Bayer Sager. It included the hit single 'You're Moving Out Today', a song which she co-wrote with Bette Midler and Bruce Roberts. The single reached number 6 in the UK Singles Chart. She was born in New York City and graduated from New York University, where she majored in English, dramatic arts, and speech. She had already written her first pop hit, 'A Groovy Kind of Love', while still a student at New York City's High School of Music and Art. It was recorded by The Mindbenders, whose version was a worldwide hit. The song was later recorded by Sonny & Cher, Petula Clark, and Phil Collins, whose rendition for the film Buster reached number one on both the UK Singles Chart in 1988.In October 2016, Bayer Sager published her memoir, They're Playing Our Song: A Memoir. She also narrated the audiobook version. In this episode I am in conversation with Dr. Andrew Webber.I hope you enjoy the podcast and do leave feedback if you like what you have heard.Mathew Woodall

A career spanning 50 years, singer-songwriter, actress, recording artist, Grammy award-winning MELISSA MANCHESTER has multiple albums and counting. She has recently released her 25th album, Re:View for which she has re-recorded several of her charted hits. Melissa credits the stage for helping her grow and evolve as an artist and believes her songs have become reflections of that growth. She tells us that through the pandemic, she found herself in a deeply thoughtful space and used it to reflect on her music. Manchester's hit song, Don't Cry Out Loud, is, she says, a reflection of her own experiences. The song speaks of a girl who is an awful lot like her, who is trying to hide her tears, and who is trying to find joy and strength in the face of sadness.    Melissa Manchester is an independent musician who has been creating music for five decades. Her songs reflect the current events and social issues going on in the world, such as the importance of frontline workers and the impact of the presidential election. Manchester believes in the power of music and how it can be used to evoke emotion, inspire, and create meaningful conversations. She also believes that music has a mystical quality and can be used to tell stories and connect people in a unique way. In this episode, Melissa talks about how she undertook a six month song writing course with Simon and Garfunkel's Paul Simon while attending New York University. She speaks about her early life in a musical family and how she was always destined to become a songwriter and performer. Melissa Manchester is a wonderfully energetic artist with roots firmly planted in music. Her unique experience growing up with a musician father in the Metropolitan Opera and a mother in the fashion industry fostered her love for music and it grew and developed as she began her career singing jingles for commercials. This was a road that took her alongside musicians like BARRY MANILOW. In 1980, Manchester became the first singer to have two movie themes nominated for Academy Awards (Ice Castles and The Promise); two years later she achieved her highest Billboard singles chart placement with the number five hit "You Should Hear How She Talks About You," which won a Grammy for Best Female Vocal Performance. She also created a group called The Harlettes singing backup for Bette Midler. During our chat Melissa speaks glowingly about her friend BETTE MIDLER. Melissa's songs have been recorded by Barbra Streisand, Roberta Flack and Kenny Loggins, to name a few. Her writing partnership with CAROLE BAYER-SAGER is legendary. She has composed music for the animated features The Great Mouse Detective and Lady And The Tramp II, the sequel to the Disney classic. In addition to composing the scores for the theatrical musicals I Sent A Letter To My Love and Sweet Potato Queens, MELISSA also co-wrote the radio mainstays “Midnight Blue”, “Come In From The Rain” and “Whenever I Call You Friend.” Melissa celebrated her tenure as Artist In Residence at Citrus College with the release of her 21st album, The Fellas, a tribute to the iconic male singers who set the platinum standard for pop music. In November 2021, Melissa was inducted into the Great American Songbook Foundation's Hall of Fame and in December 2021, she had the pleasure of saluting her longtime colleague, Bette Midler, on The Kennedy Center Honors awards telecast. Melissa's 25th album, RE:VIEW is a celebration of her fifty-year career, features fresh takes on several of her nineteen Billboard-charted classic hits. A career sprinkled with creative endeavours, a Grammy win and several Academy award nominations, please join us as Melissa shares her incredible journey this week.  For more information about Melissa Manchester head to her website: https://melissamanchester.com/ To get in touch with me with feedback, comments or any requests for future interviewees, please head to my website www.abreathoffreshair.com.au I hope you enjoy the episode

Bob Barry's Unearthed Interviews

Better than the hat trick. Composer and conductor Marvin Hamlisch won the Oscar, Grammy, Emmy, and Tony awards. He was one of only 16 people to do so. And he, along with Richard Rodgers, won all four of those awards plus a Pulitzer Prize. His first job was a rehearsal pianist for “Funny Girl” with Barbra Streisand. During this interview I learned that he wrote a hit song for a top 40 female artist. Marvin was probably best known for writing “The Entertainer” for the movie “The Sting.” He also wrote “The Way We Were,” and “Nobody Does it Better” for the film “The Spy Who Loved Me.” And there were many others including “Chorus Line” and “They're Playing Our Song” which was based on his relationship with Carole Bayer Sager.

What the Riff?!?
1967 - January: The Monkees "More of the Monkees"

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 8, 2021 25:38

This second studio album from The Monkees was number 1 on the Billboard 200 for 18 weeks, displacing their debut album to get there.  More of the Monkees has been certified quintuple platinum, was the first pop/rock album to be the best selling album of the year in the U.S. – and the third best-selling album of the 60's.It is also the one that Monkee Michael Nesmith said was “probably the worst album in the history of the world."The Monkees were originally Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork, and Davy Jones.  The group was conceived for the TV series “The Monkees” which aired from 1966 to 1968, and the band members primarily contributed lead vocals and only limited roles in the studio, as they were expected to spend their time filming the television series.  Michael Nesmith composed and produced some songs, and Peter Tork did some guitar work, but it was mainly session musicians.  The Candy Store Prophets were the studio band for the first album, and other session musicians including The Wrecking Crew were involved in the second album. Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider had the idea for the show.  They interviewed musicians for the job, first recruiting Davy Jones, who had been working in Broadway.  The instruments played were driven by what looked good on camera rather than what they actually played.  Davy Jones was the only one with experience playing drums, but he was considered too short so Dolenz was assigned to the drums.  Nesmith was on guitar, Tork on bass, and Jones was the front man.  The more natural lineup for concerts would be Jones on drums, Tork on guitar, Nesmith on bass and Donlenz as front man.The show was a hit, but the music was a bigger hit, with album sales outstripping Nielsen ratings.  That pushed the producers to pay more attention to the music.  It also encouraged the studio to send the Monkees out to play live concerts.  These guys were recording the TV show by day, recording songs by night, and doing special appearances on the weekend, then they had to figure out how to rehearse for live performances.  It was all very confusing for the “band,” with Nesmith shocked to see the first album presenting them as an actual band.  That was October 1966.  But the second album was released while they were on tour as a real band in January of 1967.  They hadn't selected the songs, and it went out without their permission or knowledge.  They weren't even given a copy, but had to buy it in a record store.  The album cover was a picture of the band originally taken for a JC Penny commercial.  This would eventually lead to the band being able to take creative control, and Don Kirshner being dismissed.  Despite the controversy, this is quite a good album, and quite representative of the music at the time. (I'm Not Your) Steppin' StoneThis track was written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, and Micky Dolenz is on lead.  Paul Revere & the Raiders originally recorded it, but the Monkees' version is the best known.  It was also the first song from the Monkees' to chart as a B-side.Mary, MaryAlso featuring Micky Dolenz on lead, this track was written by Michael Nesmith.  It was originally recorded by The Butterfield Blues Band in 1966, and in the summer of the same year Nesmith produced and recorded the song for The Monkees with Dolenz on lead and the Wrecking Crew on backing instruments.  It was never released as a single in the U.S., but was given away as a cut-out cereal box prize in 1969.When Love Comes Knockin' (At Your Door)Davy Jones takes lead duties here, and the song was written by Carole Bayer Sager and Neil Sedaka. I'm A BelieverThis is the big hit from the album.  Micky Dolenz returns to lead, and the song was written by Neil Diamond.  It hit number 1 for the week ending December 31st, 1966, and would be the biggest selling single for all of 1967.  It went gold within two days of its release because of advance orders.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series The Green Hornet)This was the last month for a short-lived series was famous for co-starring Bruce Lee as Kato.  It also had a crossover with the Batman TV series. STAFF PICKS:Happenings Ten Years Time Ago by the YardbirdsBrian's brings us the psychedelic sensibilities of the Yardbirds.  The singer is looking back on the time from a perspective of reincarnation.  This song has participation from both Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page.  John Paul Jones also contributed the bass lines for this one.   Look What You've Done by Pozo-Seco SingersRob features a folk-oriented piece from Don Williams before his solo career.  Williams would go on to have 17 number one country hits.  His hits would be covered by everyone from Eric Clapton to Pete Townshend...to Telly Savalas.(We Ain't Got) Nothin' Yet by The Blues MagoosWayne's staff pick returns to the psychedelic genre.  This is the best known song for The Blues Magoos.  While not very successful commercially as a band, the Blues Magoos was a big influence on many bands including Pink Floyd.Good Vibrations by The Beach BoysBruce brings us the high water mark song of The Beach Boys' discography.  Good Vibrations was the costliest single ever recorded.  Brian Wilson recorded a bunch of short musical modules with his bandmates and with session musicians at four different Hollywood studios.  He had more than 90 hours of tape to make this 3.5-minute single.  Wilson's mother was the inspiration for this song. COMEDY TRACK:Snoopy vs. The Red Baron by The Royal GuardsmenA novelty song inspired by the comic serial "Peanuts," in which Snoopy often daydreams of fighting the Red Baron in his doghouse - re-envisioned as a Sopwith Camel.

OPRAH WINFREY: THE MAP  How many times have you witnessed someone get close to achieving a goal, only to see it suddenly fall apart? Or they reach the top of the mountain but can’t seem to hold on. Maybe you too have struggled with near-misses and dreams that didn’t quite materialize. Self-sabotage can be a devastating cycle. Oprah believes the variable between winning the race and faltering at the finish line lies with one of the guiding forces in her life: Intention. She says, “Those who sense your truth and your authenticity will rise up to support you. But most importantly you must believe with your whole heart that you are capable of achieving your goal. So first ask yourself Why? What is the real intention? Then ask: How will I execute the action?” In this podcast, Oprah sits down with such legendary spiritual teachers and writers as  Gary Zukav, Gabrielle Bernstein, Brené Brown, Stephen Colbert, David Brooks, President Joe Biden (VP at the time) Marianne Williamson, Daniel Pink, Carole Bayer Sager, Cheryl Strayed, Reverend Michael Beckwith, Meagan Good, Devon Franklin, Janet Mock and Goldie Hawn. They share their own personal trajectories and the inner map they followed which led them to the ultimate fulfillment of their dreams. Interviews with these talented writers, speakers and thought leaders are excerpted from Oprah’s Emmy Award-winning show Super Soul Sunday. You can also find this compilation and other insightful conversations, in Oprah’s best-selling book The Path Made Clear.

ABOUT DIONNE'S 80th BIRTHDAY/CHRISTMAS FUNDRAISERThis year of 2020 held many great moments for the legendary Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award winner Dionne Warwick - her appearance on Fox TV's The Masked Singer as well as dropping by the Verzus online special with Gladys Knight and Patti Labelle being two examples. On Saturday, Dec. 12 2020, at 7 p.m. EST/4 p.m. Pacific time, Ms. Warwick will be hosting a dual live online event as she celebrates the holiday season and a milestone - her 80th birthday. "For years, I'd hold a Christmas and birthday dinner at my home," she explained in a recent interview. "But since we can't do that this time around due to the pandemic, we'll be bringing the party to fans as a live stream event. I want to show folks that I'm still here and kicking!"On the heels of her album, The Voices of Christmas, Ms. Warwick will be joined by many guests who participated in the holiday recording - Johnny Mathis, the Oak Ridge Boys w/John Rich, Billy Ray Cyrus and Aloe Blacc, to name a few. In addition, entertainers and celebrities from around the world will send birthday and Christmas greetings.Portions of the proceeds from the live stream event will benefit Hunger Not Impossible - a text-based service that connects kids and families in need with prepaid, nutritious, to-go meals from nearby restaurants. "Every year, there are families that cannot afford to even buy basic foods for their children - and it's worse near the holiday season," Ms. Warwick stated, "With this event, we'll be able to help this wonderful organization with its efforts to feed folks."Hunger Not Impossible website - www.notimpossible.comFor information regarding Dionne Warwick's celebration, go to www.officialdionnewarwick.comDIONNE WARWICK BIO (FROM BIOGRAPHY.COM)Dionne Warwick sang in a gospel trio before recording her first hit songs, including "Walk on By" and "I Say a Little Prayer." After a lull in her career in the 1970s, her album Dionne (1979) sold a million copies. She went on to release the albums Heartbreaker (1982) and How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye? (1983). In 2012, Warwick celebrated her 50th anniversary in the music business with the album Now.Born Marie Dionne Warrick on December 12, 1940, in East Orange, New Jersey, Dionne Warwick has enjoyed a tremendously long career as a singer. She comes from a gospel musical background as the daughter of a record promoter and a gospel group manager and performer. As a teenager, Warwick started up her group, the Gospelaires, with her sister, Dee Dee, and aunt Cissy Houston. After finishing high school in 1959, Warwick pursued her passion at the Hartt College of Music in Hartford, Connecticut. She also landed some work with her group singing backing vocals for recording sessions in New York City. During one session, Warwick met Burt Bacharach. Bacharach hired her to record demos featuring songs written by him and lyricist Hal David. A record executive liked Warwick's demo so much that Warwick got her own record deal.In 1962, Warwick released her first single, "Don't Make Me Over." It became a hit the following year. A typo on the record led to an accidental name. Instead of "Dionne Warrick," the label read "Dionne Warwick." She decided to keep the new moniker and went on to greater chart success. In 1964, Warwick had two Top 10 singles with "Anyone Who Had a Heart" and "Walk On By"-both penned by Bacharach and David. "Walk On By" was also her first No. 1 R&B hit.: More hits, including many written by Bacharach and David, followed as the 1960s progressed. "Message to Michael" made the Top 10 in 1966, and her version of "I Say A Little Prayer" climbed as high as the No. 4 spot the following year. Warwick also found great success with her contributions to movie soundtracks. The theme song for the 1967 film Alfie, starring Michael Caine, was a solid success for her, as was "Valley of the Dolls," from the 1968 movie of the same name.In 1968, Warwick had other hits, including her trademark tune "Do You Know the Way to San Jose," which earned Warwick her first Grammy Award. That same year, Warwick made history as the first African-American woman to perform for Queen Elizabeth II in England.Warwick reached the top of the pop charts for the first time in 1974 with "Then Came You," which she recorded with the Spinners. But then Warwick suffered a career slump for several years. In 1979, she made a triumphant return to the charts with the ballad "I'll Never Love This Way Again." She also soon became a fixture on television with the music program Solid Gold, which she hosted in the early 1980s. Warwick also had several successful collaborative efforts. In 1982, she made the charts with "Friends In Love" with Johnny Mathis, and "Heart Breaker" with Barry Gibb.Around this time, Warwick scored one of the biggest hits of her career with "That's What Friends Are For." Stevie Wonder, Elton John and Gladys Knight also appeared on this 1985 No. 1 hit, which was an AIDS charity single written by Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager. "Love Power," her duet with Jeffrey Osbourne two years later, marked her next major hit.Warwick encountered some challenges beginning in the 1990s. It was revealed in the late 1990s that she had a lien against her for unpaid taxes. In 2002, she was arrested in a Miami airport for possession of marijuana. She lost her sister, Dee Dee, in 2008, and her cousin, Whitney Houston, four years later. Despite these personal losses, Warwick continued to perform and to record new music. In 2012, Warwick celebrated her 50th year in music with the album Now. The recording features songs written by Bacharach and David. She once explained her longevity to Jet magazine, saying, "I really attribute it to remaining who I am and not jumping ship, being completely cognizant of what the people ... are accustomed to hearing from me."Warwick has two sons, David and Damon Elliot, from her marriage to actor and musician William David Elliot. She has worked with both of her sons on different projects over the years. For more interviews visit: www.iamrefocusedradio.comPodcast Sponsors:Rockafellas Barber Shop San AntonioRico Rodriguez (Owner)www.facebook.com/Rockafellas-Barber-Shop-105026620034718/?ref=page_internal1733 BabcockSan Antonio, Texas 78229Phone: (210) 782-5188The Dear Agency specializes in helping you understand your coverage BEFORE you need it!We offer all lines of personal and commercial insurance, including Auto, Home and Life.Contact Dawn Dear at 210-507-2169 and visit us at 7529 N Loop 1604 in Live Oak, TX or farmersagent.com/ddear

This week, Macintosh & Maud Haven’t Seen What?! returns to the relatively safe harbor of mediocre Bond films. ‘Cause let’s be honest, anything would have been an upgrade from the garbage pile we witnessed last week. Roger Moore is really making his own space as Bond, and Christopher Lee really sells Scaramanga as a classic villain of the franchise, third nipple and all. On the other hand, both our Bond ladies are thoroughly one-dimensional, either the butt of jokes or the subject of Bond’s and Scaramanga’s violence. And then there’s the Wonderful World of Disney shooting gallery for Scaramanga…it’s just a bit much. it all evens out to middle this week as we review The Man With the Golden Gun! To say that Sherree’s sound is distinctive is an understatement. The Dove Award recipient is a vocal chameleon in whose satiny delivery can be heard through a resume that spans multiple genres, including R&B, rock, jazz, country, and gospel. Her versatility comes from working closely with a veritable Grammy Award winning singers and songwriters—Barbara Streisand to Carlos Santana and from Faith Hill to CeCe Winans and Michael W. Smith just to name a few. ? Born in Chicago, Sherree Patrice (formerly Sherree Ford-Payne) grew up on the South Side in historic Antioch Baptist Church, under the leadership of pastor and civil rights leader Rev. W.N. Daniel. As a teenager, she joined the acclaimed Walt Whitman and the Soul Children of Chicago. Her first recorded solo was the traditional gospel-flavored “The Race,” featured on the choir’s 1992 top-selling album, We Are One. ? ?Armed with God-given talent, training, and a taste of the music business, Sherree moved to California at age eighteen, eager to pursue music full-time. She grasped the industry with both hands, writing songs for Nancy Wilson, recording demos for top producers and songwriters such as Dianne Warren, David Foster, Carole Bayer-Sager and Babyface and touring with Jennifer Lopez and Mariah Carey. She sang background vocals for artists such as Whitney Houston, Michael Buble’, Barbara Streisand, Usher, and Boyz II Men.

Hopefully all of you out there, have similar dear friends in your lives, past and present ... so I'd like to dedicate this song, to simply ''Friendship.'' As Burt Bacharach wrote it, and Carole Bayer Sager put it .... ''IN GOOD TIMES, IN BAD TIMES, I"LL BE ON YOUR SIDE FOREVER MORE, THAT'S WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR." that's for sure. Key F, tuning CGBD. Thanks for your interest, ... Don.

Grammy winner Melissa Manchester signed her first publishing deal at the age of 17, before going on to work as a backup singer for Bette Midler. She first came to prominence as an artist with the 1975 single “Midnight Blue,” which climbed to #6 on Billboard’s Pop chart and hit the #1 spot on the Adult Contemporary rankings. Co-written with Carole Bayer Sager, it was the first of nine Manchester-penned compositions to hit the Top 40. Of those, a half dozen reached the Top 10 on the Adult Contemporary chart.  In addition to writing her own hits as a performer - including “Just Too Many People” and “Just You And I” - she also found success writing for other artists, including the Top 10 hit “Come In From the Rain” for Captain & Tennille and “Whenever I Call You Friend,” which was a Top 5 Pop hit for Kenny Loggins and Stevie Nicks in 1978. Her songs have been recorded by Roberta Flack, Dusty Springfield, Alison Krauss, and Barbra Streisand.
