Ep 89 – George Floyd's Murder Was A Hit I realized that the facts did not add up, especially when I learned that the two men knew each other and had worked together at the same nightclub. Listed below are my notes for the podcast. Please do your homework and see if you come to the same conclusion. SUMMARY 1. George Floyd, a black man whose death Monday sparked ongoing protests, and Derek Chauvin, identified by local media as the officer who was videotaped kneeling on Floyd's neck for minutes shortly before his death, worked at the same nightclub Maya Santamaria owned El Nuevo Rodeo Club in Minneapolis' south side until selling it just months ago, and confirmed to local media outlets that both Floyd and Chauvin worked security at the establishment. Chauvin worked outside the club while security guards, like Floyd, worked inside. They had overlapping shifts. They had to have known each other. El Nuevo Rodeo Club, where Chauvin and Floyd both worked, is just down the street from Minneapolis' Third Precinct. 2. Chauvin married a Hmong woman, and two other arresting officers are of Hmong descent. 3. Hmong Gangs are very active in the Northeast, including the gang Menace of Destruction (MOD). MOD is known for prostitution, drugs, and counterfeiting. 4. Despite having Chauvin as off-duty security outside the club, the police could never solve the crimes or connect the suspects to El Nuevo Rodeo Club activity. 5. In 2012, the FBI busted a drug ring that involved the Mexican gang La Familia (also known for drugs and counterfeiting) and the Hmong gang Menace of Destruction. The ring involved the selling of methamphetamine, a “Club Drug” being pushed by Mexican cartels. EL NUEVO RODEO CLUB – MAY HAVE BEEN GROUND ZERO FOR COUNTERFEITING. Owned by Maya Santamaria, a singer, waitress, and music promoter with a degree in anthropology. The city is pushing to shut down the Rodeo. The nightclub's future lies in the hands of a judge who is deciding whether to recommend that the City Council yank its liquor license. In 2006, the club got slapped with fines for violating city code: It had hosted more people than the fire code allowed, had advertised as a nightclub when it was licensed as a restaurant/nightclub, and was Questioned about selling more alcohol than food (the liquor license requires that 60 percent of sales be food). That December, city officials convened to determine whether El Nuevo Rodeo's liquor license should be renewed. Santamaria agreed to submit her food and alcohol receipts for the next year. In April 2008, three people were shot outside of Denny's, right across the street from the nightclub. A story in the Longfellow/Nokomis Messenger connected the shooting to nightclub patrons, though police were never able to prove it. On November 14, 2008 there were multiple police calls associated with the nightclub. Incidents ranged from shots fired (almost an officer-involved shooting), to several felony assaults (on patrons and staff), to numerous misdemeanors (obstructing, disorderly conduct, assault, theft The city compiled its case against the nightclub: a stack of 28 police call reports from 2008 and six from 2009. The city attorney on the case described the business as having "an inordinately high number of incidents of criminal behavior." DEREK CHAUVIN – MAY HAVE BEEN IN HMONG GANG Records show that the 44-year-old Chauvin initially studied cooking before taking courses in law enforcement and doing two stints in the Army as a military police officer in the late 1990s, serving at Fort Benning, Georgia, and in Germany. Chauvin became a Minneapolis police officer in 2001. He had 17 complaints against him, including one for pulling a woman out of her car during a speeding stop. He won two medals of valor, one in 2006 for being part of a group of officers who opened fire on a stabbing suspect who pointed a shotgun at them and another in 2008 for a domestic violence incident in which Chauvin broke down a bathroom door and shot a suspect in the stomach. Married to Kellie Chauvin, a Laotian immigrant who became the first Hmong winner of the Mrs. Minnesota pageant. In 2009, he single-handedly apprehended a group of gang members while working as an off-duty security guard at the El Nuevo Rodeo, a Minneapolis nightclub. (Chauvin shoots most suspects but apprehends an entire gang BY HIMSELF. This does not add up). HMONG GANGS IN MINNEAPOLIS - MENACE OF DESTRUCTION" (MOD), FORMERLY KNOWN AS "MASTERS OF DESTRUCTION – LINKED TO “CLUB DRUGS” AND COUNTERFEITING is a Hmong street gang created in 1988. Today, it is active in every state, with a large Hmong community in California, the Midwestern United States, known for prostitution, money laundering, the distribution of narcotics, and counterfeiting. A national drug ring based in Twin Cities was busted after months of surveillance and wiretaps in March 2012. The cartel La Familia smuggled millions of dollars worth of methamphetamine from Mexico to Minnesota. The drugs then went through a local member of the cartel and the Menace of Destruction gang. La Familia is also known for counterfeiting. Eleven-year veteran and native Hmong speaker Tou Thao began as a community service officer and was the subject of six complaints. No longer chiefly made by "cooks" in makeshift labs in the U.S., methamphetamine is now the domain of Mexican drug cartels that are mass-producing high-quality quantities of the drug and pushing it into markets where it was previously unknown. While methamphetamine remains a street drug in many parts of the country, it functions as a “club drug” in the Northeast United States. While diffused to the Northeast, certain elements of the drug economy and networks of use have allowed it to retain its status as a club drug. Methamphetamine use has been found in a range of club subcultures, including electronic dance music clubs, raves, and circuit parties (Mansergh et al., 2001; McCaughan, Carlson, Falck, & Siegal, 2005; Yacoubian et al., 2004). THE ARREST – LOOKED LIKE AN EXECUTION 46-year-old George Floyd was arrested on suspicion of forgery on May 25. Cellphone video of Floyd's May 25 arrest showed Chauvin placing his left knee on Floyd's neck with Lane holding Floyd's legs and Kueng holding his back while Thao stood between the officers and onlookers, according to charging documents.Join The Community Follow us on:Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/quantumAIradioTwitter (X) at @EventHo14339589Instagram at @EventHorizonEmail at mpeter1896@gmail.com Subscribe To My Other Podcasts:Movie Reviews from the Edge - https://www.spreaker.com/show/movie-reviews-from-the-edgeThe Mark Peterson Show - https://www.spreaker.com/show/the_mark_peterson_show Support the Show Did you know you can support the podcast by joining the Spreaker Supporter Club? Ian Gillan was one of the foremost vocalists of the heavy metal style of rock that emerged in the ‘70s, earning his greatest celebrity as a member of Deep Purple despite the fact that he also led his own bands. Ian began singing while still in his teens and was a member of several pub rock bands. It was in one of these that he met bass player Roger Glover, and the two were invited to join Deep Purple in 1969. They debuted with the band in London of the same year. Ian Gillan's voice was the making of Deep Purple and he was featured on a series of hugely successful recordings including Fireball, Machine Head, Made in Japan and Who Do We Think We Are. He also starred on Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's concept album Jesus Christ Superstar where he sang the title role. That album topped the U.S. charts in 1971. Ian Gillan recorded and toured the world relentlessly in those days until he was hospitalised for exhaustion in 1971. He decided to take leave of the band and, just as he left, "Smoke on the Water" from Machine Head began making its way up the U.S. charts, where it would peak in the Top Five and go gold, becoming Deep Purple's biggest ever career hit. Ian then bought a recording studio and signed a solo deal with a small record company. He formed the Ian Gillan Band and in 1975, their debut album, Child in Time, entered the charts. Switching record labels, the group simplified its name to Gillan and recorded a series of albums, many of which hit the charts worldwide. At the end of 1982, Ian disbanded Gillan, announcing that he had to rest his vocal cords on doctor's orders. The following year, he surprised fans by joining Black Sabbath and recorded their album Born Again. He also began touring with the band. Ian says he was lucky to survive that ongoing party. In 1984, the original 1969-1973 line up of Deep Purple got back together. They cut the million-selling Perfect Strangers and the House of Blue Light. In 1989, Ian Gillan again quit the band. That December, he participated in an all-star remake of "Smoke on the Water" issued as a charity single which made the British Top 40. Ian Gillan continued to release solo albums. At the end of 1992, he again returned to Deep Purple and the band commenced a world tour. Ian left yet again and in 1998, he released yet another solo album. After 2009's offering, he continued to focus on Deep Purple and didn't make another solo album for almost a decade. These days Ian Gillan remains at the helm of Deep Purple and the album "Machine Head - Deluxe 50th Anniversary Edition" has just been released. The box set with LP, three CDs, Blu-Ray, booklet and various memorabilia also includes a remastered version of the original mix, a 1972 concert recording from London and a previously unreleased recording from 1971 made at the Casino Montreux which later burned down. It was included, despite its limited sound quality, "because of its historical relevance" according to the notes on the back of the box. Despite all the nostalgia and the loss of his wife a couple of years ago, Ian Gillan is again looking forward. He is currently living on the coast in Portugal and is at work on the band's next studio album - number 23 - with his long-time band mates Roger Glover and Ian Paice. The 78 year old is getting set for yet another Deep Purple tour that's about to kick off in Australia. There are many routes into biathlon. Grace Castonguay is part of a new generation of athletes who are finding the sport and moving quickly up the ranks. A passionate runner, Castonguay only got into cross-country skiing when an injury curtailed her running. She loved it! Just a few years later, she made her World Cup debut in December 2023, racing in Hochfilzen and Lenzerheide. When Castonguay first stepped onto skis during high school in 2019, she passionately embraced the sport. Together with her younger brother Theo, they traveled around the New Hampshire high school circuit. In her senior year, she helped the Kennett High School Eagles – Sean Doherty's alma mater – win a state title. The vital step in her storybook tale came when she accompanied Theo to a fall biathlon camp at Utah's Soldier Hollow in October 2020. There, she caught the attention of coach Zach Hall, who invited her to the biathlon range. Now she was really hooked! She progressed quickly. The next March (2021), she raced in her first biathlon event – U.S. Nationals at West Yellowstone. In October 2021, she was the second and third junior in races at the Soldier Hollow Schutzenski trials. While she failed to make the Junior Worlds team out of trials, she doubled down on cross-country, transferring mid-year to ski for St. Michael's College. That December (2022), she posted strong results again during trial races at Craftsbury, qualifying for the IBU Cup and eventually the IBU Youth and Junior World Championships in Kazakhstan, where she had the top U.S. women's results in both sprint and pursuit. Her success on the college carnival circuit and with biathlon has created a bit of a juggling act for Castonguay, which she is embracing. As the team captain for the Purple Knights, she's committed to the college schedule in January and February. But she is also looking to take advantage of her biathlon opportunity, going to Europe for the first races of the second trimester before heading back to ski for St. Michael's. In the back of her mind, she realizes that the NCAA Championships in Steamboat Springs overlap with the IBU World Cup in Soldier Hollow in early March.Needless to say, it will be a busy season. But for a young athlete who only slid on a ski track four years ago, she's anxious to embrace every single opportunity, be that as a member of the Ethan Allen Biathlon Club, the St. Michael's Purple Knights, or the U.S. Biathlon Team. Here's a sampling of what you'll learn in this episode of Heartbeat. This is a remarkable story of a young athlete's passion for sport and the emotions that athletic success can bring. So, Grace, that was a long road trip! This was my longest span of time in Europe – my longest time away from home forever. It was about a month and a half on the road. How did you originally get into skiing? So the punchline of this story is that I actually did not learn to ski, or step foot on skis, until four years ago. So, I am pretty much a baby in this sport. I grew up playing soccer and running cross country. When I was 14, I broke my leg playing soccer, and that kind of switched me fully into the endurance mode or lifestyle. I ran high school cross country and was really into running. I wanted to run Division 1 in college. That was my big goal. And then, because of the lasting, effects of my broken leg – I broke my tibia and fibula, which caused my growth plates to close. – running just really did not suit my body. I broke down a lot. My mom became the high school Nordic coach for our team so my brother could enter races. My indoor track season ended a little early and she was like, ‘Come on. Like, don't you want to join the team? It will look good on college resumes.' And I figured, hey, why not? I entered my first Nordic ski race about three weeks after I learned to ski. I looked like Bambi on ice skates. What clicked for you when Zach Hall invited you to the range in Soldier Hollow?I had shot a biathlon rifle before because my brother was a biathlete, but I hadn't really caught the biathlon bug at that point. So I figured, okay, why not? I'll go to this practice. I'm here. Something to do. And I went to that practice that day, and things clicked for me. I really started to see why people love this sport. One of the big things was that Zach identified that I am left-eye dominant despite being right-handed. And when I had shot a biathlon rifle before, I was shooting righty and I couldn't hit the broadside of a barn. So once we figured out that I was left-eye dominant, that made a huge difference to how I felt about the sport. And I also just really enjoyed the way he explained the process. Zach is a really phenomenal coach in a multitude of ways. He's really great at the mental aspect of sport. I remember going home that day from practice, and I said to myself, ‘I want to be really good at this.' And I remember watching videos of Dorothy Revier and her extremely fast standing shooting time. And I was like, ‘I want to be this good someday.' So, from that point, my goal is kind of shifted gears all in towards biathlon. There was no operating biathlon range in Jackson at that point, so my brother and I built a little range in our backyard because we live kind of in a pretty remote place, and I would just shoot. What was your biggest takeaway from Junior Worlds? The biggest thing I took away from competing at Junior Worlds was just how amazing the IBU sport family is. It was my first Junior Worlds. It just felt so wonderful to be part of such a rich and large group of really high-level junior athletes. I remember going to the opening ceremony, and it was it was just really cool to be there. You're passionate about biathlon. What does it mean for you to dig deep? There's there's this place that has – it's a really fun place to go, and I don't get it very often. You can only capture it for a couple of races a season, where you're just like, you have this moment and I need to dig deeper than I've ever dug before. You can see it like I was never passing out at the finish line, like laying on the ground after a cross-country running race. But you push yourself so hard in Nordic skiing, and I really enjoyed that.Did you watch videos?Oh, yeah! YouTube basically taught me how to ski. YouTube was my best friend. I would just watch technique videos religiously and then try to capture that image in my brain and replicate it on skis the next day. What was your debut like on Hochfilzen?Going into the training day, I showed up and I was just, like, star-struck. There are so many cameras. There are so many superstars. And it was really hard to not get distracted on the range – like following in awe of some of the greats like Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold and Lisa Vittozzi. It was really a super cool experience. Then getting to the race day, just the noise. Oh my gosh, the noise is so incredibly loud. The sound just kind of envelops you and it's hard to hear your own thoughts. And also another really surprising thing is how many USA fans there were. I was I remember warming up on the course and just hearing USA, USA and people knew my name and that was really special. What was your emotion when finishing your first World Cup?I remember finishing the race and my only goal going into my first World Cup start was I wanted to recapture the feeling of pure joy that I had felt in my very first Nordic ski race four years prior. I remember finishing this the race and my whole body was just shaking from the energy and the noise and the thrill of having this huge, huge accomplishment under my belt. I mean, making the World Cup has been the dream since I started. So it was really a huge culmination of emotions crossing that finish line. It was also really special because my mom flew out to watch the race and I actually could hear her yelling for me above all the fans!Follow Grace Castonguay@grace.castonguay

I consider my superpower to be connecting dots.Author Nell Derick Debevoise wrote Going First to share the lessons learned over ten years of leading a social enterprise, Inspiring Capital, that she ultimately shuttered. Having found a path forward to continue her mission of creating a better world, she wants other changemakers to benefit. She notes that the work we do can be difficult on us: The purpose-driven among us, the changemakers out there, are the hardest on ourselves. We see the problems in our world so vividly. They hurt us, right? Whether that's around climate or social issues and human rights or racism or a very specific local issue in our communities, or the way that our employees are treated, whatever that thing is really sits in our hearts and is heavy. She wants to help change agents find a sense of accomplishment in their progress. My point with the book and with the work is to help people take a breath, take stock of everything they're doing and just recognize all the ways that we do already have impact through our work, but also our lives holistically. That's what the spheres of impact do. That's what this playbook is, a kind of guided journal for people to work through on their own or in a group, at their workplace or in their community, take credit for what they're already doing that has impact.Nell achieves success using her superpower, connecting dots.AI Episode Summary* Devin Thorpe welcomes guest Nell Derek Debevoise to the show* Debevoise has been working in the impact space for many years* She has recently written a book called Going First: Find the Courage to Lead Purposefully and Inspire Action* The book is a guided journal that helps individuals recognize the impact they already have and find ways to increase it* Debevoise believes that purpose-driven individuals are often too hard on themselves and need to take a breath and appreciate their current impact* Her superpower is connecting dots, gathering diverse ideas and people, and finding connections between them* Debevoise shares the challenging experience of shutting down her company after ten years* She emphasizes the importance of mindfulness in developing the skill of connecting dots* To connect with Debevoise and learn more about her work, visit her LinkedIn page or the website of her company, 3D Performance Group* Debevoise is hosting two events in November; one focused on one-on-one coaching and equine-assisted learning and the other on group work and energy tools for collaboration and performance improvementHow to Develop Connecting Dots As a SuperpowerNell explains how she uses her dot-connecting superpower in three ways:* Collecting and gathering ideas* Recalling them spontaneously* Seeing potential connections and acting on themNell shared the story of the end of her business and how she emerged from that experience, leveraging her ability to connect dots:Covid, of course, made us all look harder in the mirror and think about what we were doing. It changed some of the business dynamics. That December 2020, I said, “This isn't vibing, and I have to change. My superpower is my superpower. My purpose is my purpose. I am still who I am, and I will continue doing that. But it has to be in a different form. And so I'm going to close down the company.”It meant saying, telling some investors that they were not ever going to get their money back. Not a total surprise because they had been getting quarterly updates since they wrote checks five-ish years earlier. Um, and it meant me shutting down my baby or my identity. It was really hard. It was very difficult. The way that my superpower emerged was to build what was next and to, first of all, just envision what was next. I was able to have this big repository of ideas and people that I have gathered over the years and to see connections between some of them. I didn't leap immediately from one lily pad to the next, but I understood there could and would be some connections there. I was able to see that my impact was going to be much greater if I wasn't bogged down by things that are not my superpower, like managing teams and managing projects. So, I shut down the company, and two years later, it has revolved, revealing all these fabulous things and this portfolio that I'm so much more aligned with the superpower in.Nell says the key to learning to make connections is a mindfulness practice. She did Transcendental Meditation training. She suggests things as simple as cooking or rubbing a dog's belly can provide similar benefits.By following Nell's example and advice, you can learn to make connections. With practice, this could become a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world. SEASON 2 EPISODE 19: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: One of Trump's Georgia co-defendants is already PRE-flipping on him. And his Mar-a-Lago “Employee 4” got rid of his Trump-supplied lawyer and recanted testimony that almost got him brought up on perjury charges and guess who he was lying FOR because after he changed his tune, that's when Jack Smith added the new charges against Trump and the new co-defendant. The former Chairman of the Georgia Republican Party David Shafer – more importantly the former Quote “Chairman” unquote of the Georgia Fake Electors Slate - filed to switch his part of the trial to federal court and in his argument for doing so he added a small detail: this is all Trump's fault. “Mr. Shafer and the other Republican Electors iin the 2020 election,”write Shafer's attorneys, “acted at the DIRECTION OF THE INCUMBENT PRESIDENT and other federal officials. Attorneys for the President and Mr. Shafer specifically instructed Mr. Shafer, verbally and in writing,” write Shafer's attorneys, “that the Republican electors' meeting and casting their ballots on December 14, 2020 was consistent with counsels' advice and was necessary to preserve the presidential election contest.” Shafer even handed over evidence. Not just to Fonni Willis but to the public. That December 14th sham electors' vote? Shafer released a copy of the TRANSCRIPT of that gathering of the coven and the guy who addressed them beforehand was Ray Smith, another one of Trump's co-defendants and oh by the way Trump's local attorney of record in Atlanta who walked the suckers through their part in the coup attempt. And in the Florida case, Jack Smith answered Judge Aileen Cannon's confused query in a now-unsealed filing and revealed matter-of-factly that this was because the District of Columbia Grand Jury had been hearing evidence that maybe one of the witnesses – Mar-a-Lago Employee Number 4 – should be charged with perjury because while he still had Trump stooge Stanley Woodward as his attorney, he testified that he didn't know nothing about nobody erasing no security video from no servers and never heard nobody say The Boss Wanted The Servers Deleted. And then somebody told Employee Number 4 that he'd just committed perjury and he DID see the light and doth repented and got a new attorney from the Public Defenders' office. And the next thing you knew, Employee Number 4 – Trump's I-T guy, Yuscil Taveras, was remembering clear as a bell and suddenly the guy who said “The Boss Wanted The Servers Deleted” had become the latest indicted victim of the maxim “Everything Trump Touches, Dies” and his name is Carlos De Oliveira and he is still a defendant but if you want to draft somebody in your fantasy Who Flips First in Florida league, pick him. And oh yeah, as soon as Taveras got his OWN attorney and not the same one Walt Nauta has, Smith filed three more counts against Trump. B-Block (17:10) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Vivek, caught lying, on tape, the day before the GOP debate? He's the Ron DeSantis of Scott Walkers. The full pre-debate nonsense, and Jair Bolsonaro may have pawned two high-end watches given to him by other governments, and the "Rich Men North of Richmond" singer had his 15 Days of fame. Now they've discovered Oliver Anthony is the reverse Milk Shake Duck: he's NOT racist. (24:34) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: The weekly Eric Adams disaster here in Fun City. Greg Abbott has an ugly soul. And the Republican National Committee and Jeanine "Hooters Pants On a 72-Year Old" Pirro attack Biden on... talking to a rescue dog? C-Block (29:30) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: I was reminded of him the other day so I thought it was time to tell a few stories about a man whose absence is still so shocking, so wrong, so something you wish you could correct: Tony Gwynn.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Radio ratings peaked in 1948 and the networks used excess profits to help launch TV. By 1950 NBC, CBS, and ABC were filling their entire primetime TV schedule. After eighteen years as one of radio's highest-rated weekly shows, the just-heard Fibber McGee and Molly began airing five nights per week for fifteen minutes on October 5th, 1953. As America moved west after World War II, turning farms into suburbs and western towns into cities, the pattern of radio listening was changing. The desire to expand the Major Leagues into new cities gained traction thanks to an upstart league known as The Continental League. In order to block its entry into the marketplace, Major League Baseball finally expanded in 1961. When the Washington Senators moved to Minnesota before the ‘61 season to become the Twins, Washington received a new Senators franchise. Thanks to the success of the Dodgers, The American League added the Los Angeles Angels, upping the junior circuit to ten teams. The following year, the National League added two new teams: The Colt 45s, who, in 1964 changed their name to the Astros, and the New York Metropolitans, colloquially known as the Mets. One by one, old ballparks were being torn down—Ebbets field in 1960, The Polo Grounds in 1964. Both sites are now occupied by housing projects. New stadiums were often multipurpose —able to accommodate both football and baseball. Like with baseball, how America got its entertainment was also changing. By 1960, scripted radio drama was dying out as shows either moved to TV or were canceled. Although baseball would still be broadcast on the radio, fans now tuned into TV for their favorite games. A new generation of sportscasters emerged, like former Yankees shortstop Phil Rizzuto. He called Roger Maris' record-breaking sixty-first home run at Yankee Stadium on October 1st, 1961. Rizzuto had a respectable playing career—winning the 1950 AL MVP award, but it was his work as a Yankees announcer that got him voted into the MLB Hall Of Fame in 1994. In 1956, while the Dodgers were still in Brooklyn, Jackie Robinson was putting the finishing touches on his remarkable career. That December 13th, the Dodgers traded Robinson to the Giants for Dick Littlefield and thirty-thousand dollars. Jackie Robinson opted to retire, rather than report and move to San Francisco. Within a few years he was hosting his own syndicated radio show, Jackie Robinson's Radio Shots. In 1960, he interviewed perhaps the most famous African-American pitcher in history, Satchel Paige. Jackie Robinson was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962. Robinson was also the first African-American television analyst in MLB history, and the first African-American vice president of a major corporation, Chock full o'Nuts. On October 15th, 1972, at the second game of the World Series between the Oakland Athletics and the Cincinnati Reds, at Cincinnati's Riverfront Stadium, Jackie Robinson was invited to throw out a ceremonial first pitch in honor of his twenty-five years of service to Major League Baseball. Complications from heart disease and diabetes made him almost blind by middle age. He used the opportunity to make one last statement to the baseball establishment. It would be Jackie Robinson's last public appearance. Jackie Robinson died nine days later at his home. He was fifty-three. His Manhattan funeral service attracted twenty-five hundred mourners. Many of his former teammates were pallbearers. Reverend Jesse Jackson delivered the eulogy. On April 15th, 1997, the fiftieth anniversary of Jackie Robinson's first game at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, Major League Baseball unanimously retired Robinson's number forty-two across the league. He is the only man to receive such an honor.

Inflation was a key topic in a recent meeting at the Brookings Institution. While it has trended downward recently, the details are critical to tracking the path ahead.----- Transcript -----Welcome to Thoughts on the Market. I'm Seth Carpenter, Global Chief Economist for Morgan Stanley. Along with my colleagues, bringing you a variety of perspectives, I'll be talking about inflation and the U.S. economy. It's Monday, February 13th at 10 a.m. in New York. This past week, I was fortunate to be part of a panel discussion at the Brookings Institution, a research think tank in Washington, D.C. I was one of three economists in discussion with one of the White House's main economic advisers. Unsurprisingly, the topic of inflation came up.One key chart from the White House economist juxtaposed services wage inflation with core services inflation, excluding housing. The key point of the chart was that falling wage inflation in the services sector may put some downward pressure on inflation in core services, excluding housing. This topic is timely because Chair Powell has repeatedly referenced services inflation, excluding housing, as a key risk to their goal for achieving price stability.A couple of weeks ago I'd written on the same topic, and there we tried to show that even the link itself between wage inflation and services inflation is a bit tenuous. But just looking at the raw data, it is clear that the monthly run rate on other services remains elevated. But a question we have to ask ourselves is, 'is it elevated a lot or a little?'Since June of last year, core services inflation, excluding housing, has trended down, and for December, it was at about 32 basis points on a month-over-month basis. That December pace is 3.9% in annual terms and would contribute about 2.1 percentage points to core PCE inflation. To put those numbers into context, recall that from 2013 to 2019, before COVID, core services inflation, excluding housing, averaged about 18 basis points a month or 2.2% at an annual rate. So yes, services inflation is higher than it has been historically, but it is nowhere near as high, relative to history, as housing inflation has been or core goods inflation has been, until recently. Indeed, from 2013 to 2019, core PCE inflation ran below the Fed's 2% inflation target. If goods inflation and housing inflation just went back to their averages from that period and services inflation, excluding housing, was at the rate that we saw in December, core PCE inflation would have overshot target, but by less than a half a percentage point. And we can't forget, for the past year, month-over-month services inflation, excluding housing, has been trending down.So are we out of the woods? No. Clearly, services inflation, excluding housing, is still high and needs to come down over time for the Fed to hit its target. But goods inflation and housing inflation were much bigger drivers of the surge in inflation. So, we really need to consider what's the path from here.Goods Inflation has been negative for the past few months, but used car prices look to have edged up a bit. Our US economics team expects the monthly change in core goods prices to be positive five basis points in January, interrupting that losing streak. We do not expect this reversion to last long, but the next couple of months could have some bumps in the path.Similarly, for housing inflation, the data on current new leases clearly points to a sharp deceleration in housing inflation over the rest of this year. Although overall housing inflation should come down, the closely watched component of owners' equivalent rent will likely stay elevated a bit longer and possibly give markets a bit of a head fake. The details matter, as always. The bottom line for us is twofold. First, inflation is coming down, but it will not be a smooth decline. A return to target for inflation was never very likely this year, so patience is required no matter what. Second, the recent high wage inflation does not spell failure for the Fed. Services inflation is not too far off target and the link between wages and inflation is there but it's small and both wage inflation and price inflation has been trending down despite the strong labor market.I conclude with what might be the most underappreciated moment from Chair Powell's public comments last week. He said he sees inflation getting close to 2% in 2024. When the FOMC did their projections in December, the median forecast was for 3.5% inflation at the end of this year. So, it seems like, based on the incoming data, Chair Powell might be pointing to a meaningful downward revision to the March forecast for inflation. Thanks for listening and if you enjoy the show, please leave us a review on Apple Podcasts and share Thoughts on the Market with a friend or colleague today.
This week's guest played college ball at Le Moyne College where he split time as a pitcher and a shortstop. He then turned his focus exclusively to pitching as a Sophomore. He was drafted in the second round as the 72nd overall pick by the Cincinnati Reds. That December he was traded to the Dodgers where he made his big league debut in July of 2021. Not long after he was traded to the Washington Nationals where he has established himself as a mainstay in the National's starting rotation. Welcome to the show Josiah Gray

Branik - "Monster," a 2020 self-released single. Seattle singer/songwriter Branik says she "writes songs that sometimes make my friends cry." Today's Song of the Day will have them sobbing. In a statement to theDaily Listening, she explains, "When I wrote ‘Monster’ I felt like I had, yet again, lost everything I had been working so hard to make wonderful. It had been a year and a half of being left by the people that promised to love me and have my back. That December, I was sitting in tears on my cousin’s bedroom floor playing my aunt’s guitar... This song was me making sense of what I was feeling. It took me about 15 minutes to write. I was in crisis for a while after. I can feel my heart break a little bit every time I sing it... My hope in releasing this song is to give my listeners the same comfort that music has given me in times of grief and sorrow. There is something consoling about hearing lyrics that reflect exactly what I feel. I have one song that quite literally saved my life more than once. It gives me hope. It reminds me that I am not alone. I want my music to do that for other people... ‘Monster’ was me breaking through my coffin to claw out of my grave.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
His place in the history books rewritten, President Donald Trump endured his second impeachment largely alone and silent. For more than four years, Trump has dominated the national discourse like no one before him. Yet when his legacy was set in stone on Wednesday, he was stunningly left on the sidelines.Trump now stands with no equal, the only president to be charged twice with a high crime or misdemeanor, a new coda for a term defined by a deepening of the nation's divides, his failures during the worst pandemic in a century and his refusal to accept defeat at the ballot box.Trump kept out of sight in a nearly empty White House as impeachment proceedings played out at the heavily fortified U.S. Capitol. There, the damage from last week's riots provided a visible reminder of the insurrection that the president was accused of inciting.Abandoned by some in his own party, Trump could do nothing but watch history unfold on television. The suspension of his Twitter account deprived Trump of his most potent means to keep Republicans in line, giving a sense that Trump had been defanged and, for the first time, his hold on his adopted party was in question. He was finally heard from hours after the vote, in a subdued video that condemned the insurrection at the Capitol and warned his supporters from engaging in any further violence. It was a message that was largely missing one week earlier, when rioters marching in Trump's name descended on the Capitol to try to prevent Congress from certifying Biden's victory.“I want to be very clear: I unequivocally condemn the violence that we saw last week," said Trump. He added that “no true supporter” of his “could ever endorse political violence.”But that message, partially motivated to warn off legal exposure for sparking the riot, ran contrary to what Trump has said throughout his term, including when he urged his supporters to “fight” for him last week.Trump said not a word about his impeachment in the video, though he complained about the ban on his social media. And later Wednesday, he asked allies if he had gone too far with the video, wondering if it might upset some of his supporters. Four White House officials and Republicans close to the West Wing discussed Trump's private conversations on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to do so publicly. With only a week left in Trump's term, there were no bellicose messages from the White House fighting the proceedings on the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue and no organized legal response. Some congressional Republicans did defend the president during House debate in impeachment, their words carrying across the same space violated by rioters one week earlier during a siege of the citadel of democracy that left five dead.In the end, 10 Republicans voted to impeach. It was a marked change from Trump's first impeachment. That December 2019 vote in the House, which made Trump only the third president ever impeached, played out along partisan lines. The charges then were that he had used the powers of the office to pressure Ukraine to investigate a political foe, Joe Biden, now the president-elect.At that time, the White House was criticized for failing to create the kind of robust “war room” that President Bill Clinton mobilized during his own impeachment fight. Nonetheless, Trump allies did mount their own pushback campaign. There were lawyers, White House messaging meetings, and a media blitz run by allies on conservative television, radio and websites.Trump was acquitted in 2020 by the GOP-controlled Senate and his approval ratings were undamaged. But this time, as some members of his own party recoiled and accused him of committing impeachable offenses, Trump was isolated and quiet. A presidency centered on the bombastic declaration “I alone can fix it” seemed to be ending with a whimper. The third-ranking Republican in the House, Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, said there had “never been a greater betrayal” b...
This week, we take a look at a love triangle that almost certainly went horribly wrong. Heather Elvis was 20 years old, studying cosmetology by day and waiting tables in Myrtle Beach at night. In the summer of 2013, she began a whirlwind fling with a married man. That December, she disappeared. Never to be seen again. This week, we take a look at the circumstances behind her disappearance and likely untimely death. BUT FIRST! He worked for the curia of three popes, including being camiere d'honore of Clement XI, and secretary of the commission for the reform of the calendar, working on the method to calculate the astronomically correct date for Easter in a given year. His deduction of a rotational period of Venus was based on the observation of its surface using a 2.6" (66mm) 100-foot focal length aerial telescope. Today, we know that this is impossible, because of the thick cloud cover on this planet. He also worked on the parallax of Venus, and he measured the precession of the Earth's rotational axis. As part of his efforts to improve the accuracy of the calendar, Bianchini was commissioned by Clement XI to construct an important meridian line in the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri (the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels and the Martyrs) in Rome, a device for calculating the position of the sun and stars. Craters on Mars and the Moon are named in his honour. He died at the age of 67 in Rome.2 March 1930 – D.H Lawrence - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D._H._LawrenceEnglish writer and poet. His collected works represent, among other things, an extended reflection upon the dehumanising effects of modernity and industrialisation. Some of the issues Lawrence explores are sexuality, emotional health, vitality, spontaneity, and instinct. Lawrence's opinions earned him many enemies and he endured official persecution, censorship, and misrepresentation of his creative work throughout the second half of his life, much of which he spent in a voluntary exile he called his "savage pilgrimage". Lawrence is best known for his novelsSons and Lovers, The Rainbow, Women in Love and Lady Chatterley's Lover. In these books, Lawrence explores the possibilities for life within an industrial setting. Lawrence is concerned with the nature of relationships that can be had within such a setting. Though often classed as a realist, Lawrence in fact uses his characters to give form to his personal philosophy. His depiction of sexuality, though seen as shocking when his work was first published in the early 20th century, has its roots in this highly personal way of thinking and being. He died from tuberculosis at the age of 44 in Vence.2 March 1944 – Ida Maclean - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ida_MacleanEnglish biochemist and the first woman admitted to the London Chemical Society. Between 1920 and 1941 Maclean published in the Biochemical Journal approximately thirty papers, many in collaboration, on her particular interests, namely the role of fatty acids in animals and the synthesis of fats from carbohydrates. She came to be regarded as an authority on biochemistry, and her 1943 monograph The Metabolism of Fat was the first published of Methuen's series Monographs on Biochemical Subjects. She died at the age of 66 in London.2 March 1962 – Charles Jean De La Vallee Poussin - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Jean_de_la_Vall%C3%A9e_PoussinCharles-Jean Étienne Gustave Nicolas, baron de la Vallée Poussin, Belgianmathematician. He is best known for proving the prime number theorem. The king of Belgium ennobled him with the title of baron. Although his first mathematical interests were in analysis, he became suddenly famous as he proved the prime number theorem independently of his coeval Jacques Hadamard in 1896. He also published a counterexample to Alfred Kempe's false proof of the four color theorem. The Poussin graph, the graph he used for this counterexample, is named after him. He died at the age of 95 in Watermael-Boitsfort, Brussels.Famous Birthdays2 March 1545 – Sir Thomas Bodley – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_BodleyEnglish diplomat and scholar who founded the Bodleian Library in Oxford. In 1444, the existing university library was augmented by a gift of some 300 manuscripts from Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, the youngest son of Henry IV; this prompted the university to build a new library above the Divinity School which was at that time under construction. However, during the Reformation of the 1550s, the library had been stripped and abandoned, remaining virtually untouched until the return of Bodley in 1598. The library was later named the Bodleian Library in his honour. He determined, he said, "to take his farewell of state employments and to set up his staff at the library door in Oxford." In 1598 his offer to restore the old library was accepted by the university. Bodley began his book collection effort in 1600, using the site of the former library above the Divinity School, which was in near ruin. Although Bodley lived over 400 years ago, modern libraries benefit from some of his ideas and practices. One important idea that Bodley implemented was the creation of a "Benefactors' Book" in 1602, which was bound and put on display in the library in 1604. While he did have funding through the wealth of his wife, Ann Ball, and the inheritance he received from his father, Bodley still needed gifts from his affluent friends and colleagues to build his library collection. Although not a completely original idea (as encouragement in 1412 the university chaplain was ordered to say mass for benefactors), Bodley recognized that having the contributor's name on permanent display was also inspiring. He was born in the city of Exeter in Devon.2 March 1886 – Willis H. O’Brien – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willis_H._O%27BrienAmerican motion picture special effects and stop-motion animation pioneer, who according to ASIFA-Hollywood "was responsible for some of the best-known images in cinema history," and is best remembered for his work on The Lost World (1925), King Kong (1933) and Mighty Joe Young (1949), for which he won the 1950 Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) proposed giving O'Brien an Oscar for his technical effects on King Kong but Willis insisted that each of his crew receive an Oscar statue also, which the AMPAS refused to do, so O'Brien refused to accept the Oscar award for himself. He was born in Oakland California.2 March 1902 – Edward Condon - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_CondonDistinguished American nuclear physicist, a pioneer in quantum mechanics, and a participant in the development of radar and nuclear weapons during World War II as part of the Manhattan Project. The Franck–Condon principle and the Slater–Condon rules are co-named after him. During the McCarthy period, when efforts were being made to root out communist sympathizers in the United States, Edward Condon was a target of the House Un-American Activities Committee on the grounds that he was a 'follower' of a 'new revolutionary movement', quantum mechanics; Condon defended himself with a famous commitment to physics and science. Condon became widely known in 1968 as principal author of the Condon Report, an official review funded by theUnited States Air Force that concluded that unidentified flying objects (UFOs) have prosaic explanations. The lunar crater Condon is named for him. He was born in Alamogordo, New Mexico.2 March 1904 – Dr. Seuss – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._SeussTheodor Seuss "Ted" Geisel, American children's author, political cartoonist, illustrator, poet, animator, screenwriter, and filmmaker. He is known for his work writing and illustrating more than 60 books under the pen name Dr. Seuss. Geisel adopted the name "Dr. Seuss" as an undergraduate at Dartmouth College and as a graduate student at Lincoln College, Oxford. He published his first children's book And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street in 1937. During World War II, he took a brief hiatus from children's literature to illustrate political cartoons, and he also worked in the animation and film department of the United States Army where he wrote, produced or animated many productions – both live-action and animated – including Design for Death, which later won the 1947 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. After the war, Geisel returned to writing children's books, writing classics like If I Ran the Zoo (1950), Horton Hears a Who! (1955), If I Ran the Circus (1956), The Cat in the Hat (1957), How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1957), and Green Eggs and Ham (1960). He published over 60 books during his career, which have spawned numerous adaptations, including 11 television specials, five feature films, a Broadway musical, and four television series. He was born in Springfield, Massachusetts.Events of Interest2 March 1949 – Captain James Gallagher lands his B-50 Superfortress Lucky Lady II in Fort Worth, Texas after completing the first non-stop around-the-world airplane flight in 94 hours and one minute - https://www.wired.com/2010/03/0302b50-nonstop-circumnavigation/The flight covered 23,452 miles, averaging a ground speed of 249 miles per hour. The modified bomber required air-to-air refueling four times as it flew ever eastward. The airplane was an updated version of the B-29 that had fought in World War II and was close to being obsolete by 1949. Refueling while flying was the biggest challenge of the flight. Though commonplace today, the technique was not widely used at the time. The Lucky Lady II was refueled from its close relative, the tanker version KB-29. Four pairs of KB-29s based in the Azores, Saudi Arabia, the Philippines and Hawaii were used as airborne gas stations. The Lucky Lady II was actually the second aircraft set up for the around-the-world flight. The first B-50, Global Queen, experienced engine problems after taking off Feb. 25 and landed in the Azores. The jet-powered B-52 bomber erased the Lucky Lady II's record in 1957 with a circumnavigation lasting just 45 hours, 19 minutes. Another B-52 lowered the record in 1980 to 42 hours, 23 minutes. The record still stands today.2 March 1972 – The Pioneer 10 space probe is launched from Cape Canaveral,Florida with a mission to explore the outer planets - https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/pioneer-10-launched-to-jupiterPioneer 10, the world’s first outer-planetary probe, is launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on a mission to Jupiter, the solar system’s largest planet. In December 1973, after successfully negotiating the asteroid belt and 620 million miles, Pioneer 10 reached Jupiter and sent back to Earth the first close-up images of the spectacular gas giant. In June 1983, the NASA spacecraft left the solar system and the next day radioed back the first scientific data on interstellar space. NASA officially ended the Pioneer 10 project on March 31, 1997, with the spacecraft having traveled a distance of some six billion miles.2 March 1978 – Grave robbers steal Charlie Chaplin’s body - https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/grave-robbers-steal-charlie-chaplins-bodyIn one of history’s most famous cases of body-snatching, two men steal the corpse of the revered film actor Sir Charles Chaplin from a cemetery in the Swiss village of Corsier-sur-Vevey, located in the hills above Lake Geneva, near Lausanne, Switzerland. After Chaplin’s widow, Oona, received a ransom demand of some $600,000, police began monitoring her phone and watching 200 phone kiosks in the region. Oona had refused to pay the ransom, saying that her husband would have thought the demand “ridiculous.” The callers later made threats against her two youngest children. After a five-week investigation, police arrested two auto mechanics–Roman Wardas, of Poland, and Gantscho Ganev, of Bulgaria–who on May 17 led them to Chaplin’s body, which they had buried in a cornfield about one mile from the Chaplin family’s home in Corsier. That December, Wardas and Ganev were convicted of grave robbing and attempted extortion. Political refugees from Eastern Europe, Wardas and Ganev apparently stole Chaplin’s body in an attempt to solve their financial difficulties. Wardas, identified as the mastermind of the plot, was sentenced to four-and-a-half years of hard labor. Game of Grow - Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Personal Development
We are back! You are now listening to the Game of Grow Podcast and I’m your host, Muoyo Okome. Episode 5 of the most dangerous business podcast in the world! It doesn’t matter where you start or where you are right now. If you are willing to develop your skills, study success, and work tenaciously over a long period of time, your future can be WAY bigger than your past. That is my promise to you. Take for example my man James. If you read the very first of the Hustler’s Corner, the weekly update I send via email, you already know this story. If not, you’re missing out… Make sure to sign up for the Hustler’s Corner. Go to gameofgrow.com and submit your name and email using the form at the very top of the page. And if you like, email me at hi@gameofgrow.com and I will personally forward you volume one, which I happen to be very proud of. Today we are talking about how to start. Well James started, I am super excited about James and his progress in the app game! To quickly share the story, James is one of my App Moguls who joined me over a year ago before the program was even really a program. He won Co-Member of the Month for December when his first app Mobile Fax for iPhone went live -- well designed app which fills a real need in the marketplace (yes people are still sending faxes). I always advise people to get to market as quickly, cheaply, and imperfectly as possible, as the real learnings begin when you're live, making adjustments. No one ever listens, and neither did James, haha (neither did I at first), but now he is live and getting those real learnings from the market, and it is a joy seeing him trying many things, adjusting, and truly becoming an entrepreneur. I've already seen him plow through several setbacks on the way to nearly 100 PAYING SUBSCRIBERS who will pay month after month. This will only increase and compound, but he had to actually start and get out there to make it happen. Round of applause for James (and feel free to review his app if you like it.. no need to subscribe/pay to do so). I’ve saved the link for you at gameofgrow.com/faxapp. Definition of the Game of Grow... Review of the Week Alright, so before we dive into today’s topic… You guys are killing it on the subscribes & reviews. We’ve crossed 50 reviews, so let’s see how quickly we can make it to 100. We’ve crossed 1000 downloads. I think 2000 will happen a lot quicker. In case you didn’t know, podcasts are notoriously hard to grow, but thanks to you guys passing on the word guerilla style… very grass roots, we are doing exactly that. So I’ve been thinking. One thing I want to do in true Game of Grow fashion is to be extremely transparent with the downloads and the metrics… this is not something youre going to get on most shows, I want you to see the true impact of what happens, when you listen, subscribe, review, recommend. That is how we are growing it bit by bit. And it’s my job to bring you top level content that makes you proud to spread the word. And as we hit those milestones faster and faster, I am going to figure out some cool ways that I can reward you individually and collectively to celebrate. It should be a lot of fun! But yea, anyway… Each week we feature one review of the week as a way of saying thank you for helping us to grow the show and the movement. And to that end, for the very first time. I wanted to make sure I featured somebody new, who I don’t know personally (or at least I can’t decipher the username). So big shoutout to TuneJunez. Without further ado… “Sit back and relax as Muoyo Okome tells listeners about the trials and tribulations of not only his life and the app business but the marketing and savviness needed to become a true self-made entrepreneur. Love the length of time and detail with each pod episode. Each episode stands on its own but together it flows like beautiful African fabric to give listeners what they need: advice and positive energy to pursue their dreams in any field they’re in. I expect the episodes to keep getting better but it’s a great start that’s far and I am entertained and intrigued by what’s yet to come and the guests that will eventually arrive to supplement Muoyo’s words of wisdom.” And again, that review came from TuneJunez. Thank you so much. Please feel free to email me at hi@gameofgrow.com so I can say thanks… and I would love to let the community know a bit more about you. So go ahead and subscribe and leave a review on iTunes, Spotify, Soundcloud or your podcast player of choice… and perhaps I’ll be featuring you next! And guys… after you subscribe and leave your review, please email me to let me know that you did, as well as a bit about you for 2 reasons. 1) it’s great to learn more about you guys in the community 2) gives me the opportunity to share more about you when I do the review of the day Alright, so moving on… Today's Episode... On this episode…. We are discussing How to Start. How do you take the first step in your entrepreneurial venture. First thing to establish is that there are 1,001 ways to do this. Anyone who tells you that there is one path alone is just lying to you. It’s not true! There are many ways to get it done. What I want to share with you is how I’ve done it. What I’ve done right, What I’ve learned, what I could’ve done way better, and I have a feeling this is going to be a more helpful approach for you. Cool? So let’s revisit my origin story which you’ve heard from a couple different angles in episodes 1 & 3… I think episode 3 is particularly relevant to this question, but we are going to go more in depth here on the “start” thing… on the question of START. Our story starts with me working as a “Business Manager” for one of the biggest technology companies in the world. In reality I was mostly managing spreadsheets and managing not to go crazy. Throughout life, I had mostly done all the things we’ve all been told to do… go to school, study hard, get good grades, and that is what I did. For whatever reason after both college and after graduate school, I was rejected from A LOT of jobs that I applied to, before I finally landed this opportunity, and I was making the most money I ever made in my life, the elusive six figures… I could not complain about that. Like a lot of folks in the corporate world, all I wanted to do was do well… dominate in my job, get recognition and promotions, more responsibility, and more money. I didn’t necessarily care about climbing up the ladder (I always had a vision that eventually I would work for me… I didn’t necessarily think it would be that soon), but making money was important to me. The struggle ended up being that I was working long hours... days, nights, and weekends in a job that I did not enjoy, where I was not learning much on a daily or weekly basis (funny story: when I visited my business school on a couple occasions on recruiting trips, while speaking to the students, I actually realized that my mind was atrophying, and I was getting dumber from lack of using it)... and I was pretty certain from their actions and our interactions, that the people I worked with… the higher ups, did not respect me. The worst part: I was starting to internalize some of this negativity and negative energy in the atmosphere (if you are in an environment anything like this, make sure to go the extra mile to fortify yourself against it) and had even begun to wonder if I was smart, competent, or capable. I gained a lot of weight and I just was not feeling good about myself overall. I wondered how it was that no matter what I did and how hard I worked, I kept finding my way back to the exact same familiar place… utter & complete failure Then, because things were not going poorly enough, I discovered that I was being demoted or moved into a position that I wasn’t actually trained for or credentialed for, and wouldn’t be able to contribute. It’s kind of like they were just looking for a place to park me because I was not seen as a valuable member of the organization. (I am grateful that they didn’t fire me though while all this was going on, and I was able to collect that check!) I still remember crying quietly to myself in my car driving on Washington Boulevard at nighttime on the way home. And it was around then I made a decision that something had to change. And for any of you who are going through something similar… who are going through a terrible time professionally, and perhaps even personally, I want you to pay attention to this story, and hopefully you can use it to your advantage and it can serve you as well as it has served me. And then you know the story… I was running around frantically… I had massive energy…. Just looking for a way out. Anything else that was legal that I could potentially pursue, whether it was another job or an entrepreneurial opportunity. Negative energy can be powerful fuel. Especially when you feel like you’re out of options. I was looking at everything, and I came across an entrepreneur doing mobile apps. I studied him for a while, and said “hey, I think this could be my thing” I loved that individuals and small teams were succeeding with it and I loved that you could build them one time and benefit many times over… not that there was no work to it… that doesn’t exist, but your work could be magnified. The apps kept on working without getting tired, complaining, or taking breaks, and you could always add more to the team!I decided I was going to build a big app portfolio, so that out of this portfolio, some would be big winners, and overall they would work together to replace my income and free me financially. That’s where I dove in and invested in a book and then 2 different online courses to educate myself. I started with small results, but it was enough to show me more was possible if I kept on pushing. 936 downloads for $81.78. I then knew that my biggest problem was more downloads, so I dove deep on marketing and was able to reach a $1000-$2000 monthly revenue plateau. I wasn't there yet and ran into a number of problems, so I just tried to address them one by one when they arose That December, the momentum started to compound and things really started to take off and the numbers started to make sense financially and I knew I was on my way I was getting more money than I had originally hoped for, I was experiencing the freedom I dreamed of, and I was being looked to for leadership, and having the pleasure of helping a lot of other people with their own journeys… Which is exactly what we’re here to do today. I hope by sharing my story and my experience that I can be helpful to you. And I am still on that journey to this day. Just because you experience success once doesn’t mean that you don’t have to continue earning it or that there are not different levels to unlock, but today we are talking about how to start… or even how to re-start. Maybe you’ve experienced success already and you want to build another thing. I’ve been there… Maybe you’ve experienced a failure or 5… I’ve been there… Maybe a little bit of both... Based on my own experience that we just recapped, here is roughly how I would approach it. Again keep in mind there are many other ways. This is my take: Make a decision that you’re going to start (and that you’re going to finish)I didn’t know how I was going to get from here to there, but I knew for damn sure that I needed to make a change, no matter what it was going to take and no matter how long it would take. In my experience when I approach with that kind of conviction and that level of fervor and determination, I have a much better success rate in getting what I want than if I just go through the motions or “give it a try”And another hack I like to use in combination with this is to make an investment so I have some skin in the game, and I am less likely to forget about the idea and move onFor example, the night in the coffee shop when I came up with Game of Grow, minutes later I was signing up for the social channels and buying the domains. Not as huge an investment in this. You don’t want to give it a try, you want to make a decision about what is going to happen. Slight shift in thinking, but it is powerful Start This might be the biggest thing. Even though I didn’t know what the heck to do in the beginning, I got into action and started trying a lot of different things. A lot of these things were the wrong things for me, but it allowed me to find some of the right things. Had I just stayed in one place and tried to come up with the best plan, it never would have happened. Just start. If you can nail points 1 & 2 you’ll be ahead of the game. What are your interests? Very simply, this is going to be a lot of work over a long period of time if you want to be successful with it. While you don’t necessarily need extreme passion in the thing you are working on, if you don’t enjoy at least some part of it, you are going to struggle to put in the work necessary to excel. Market demand We talked about this in episode 3, so feel free to go back. If we look at things from first principles… if we break it down to the essentials…. To have a business, you need to solve a problem for some set of customers, and in return they compensate you for it. In my app business to this day, I research the top charts and other data sources to determine what people want and how they are spending their money so I can use that data to inform my decisions. No matter what you decide to go into, it can’t JUST be about what you like. You want to be sure that whatever you decide to offer the market, there is demand for it. You can do this by looking at things that are already selling, and/or uncovering problems that you are aware of that could be addressed better, faster, more efficiently… whatever… Something I definitely could have done better earlier was zeroing in on exactly which customers I wanted to serve so I could offer them a series of complementary solutions rather than just moving from opportunity to opportunity. So that may be something you want to think about that will definitely bring value to your business. But don’t let it stop you from starting Establish a base While I know there is power in visualizing where you want to eventually be… (begin with the end in mind. I do love that) I didn’t allow it to paralyze me. What I needed was to replace my income or at least be able to cover my expenses plus some allowable margin of safety. My target became about $300 per day. If I could do that in a reliable fashion, I was in business. And that is pretty much all you need to do from the start. If you can cover your needs and then some in a recurring fashion, it’s going to allow you to go out and take bigger and bigger risks without even needing an investor, and I’ll tell you that you gain a lot of confidence by handling that for yourself, or at least I did. A lot more achievable than if I thought I needed to build Amazon or Facebook on my first try, which is what a lot of people set out to do… and that can be very daunting. Find a MentorAll of the things we talked about above can be expedited if you find someone who has already done what you want to do, already achieved the results you want, and then you walk in their path. I had several mentors for the app business, as I’ve discussed. I paid for their books and their online courses, and I’m glad I did because it saved me a ton of time and allowed me to get to the results I wanted a lot quicker than I would have otherwise. To this day I invest a lot of time and money in my skills and personal development in order to acquire the skills I need to accomplish what I want to accomplish. I also leverage free and inexpensive information… podcasts, books, audiobooks, etc. And sometimes I will be lucky enough to find myself in a position where someone has taken an interest in me and I’ve cultivated a relationship where the mentoring is free of charge. But I don’t count on that and I to this day I don’t have a problem paying to invest in my future if I know there is value there, and most of the people I know who have had some level of success will tell you the same thing. Note that It has to be in the right person for your goal, so definitely do your research before you start signing up for everything left and right and spending money foolishly, and note that it doesn’t absolve you of doing the work or running your own race. So know that as well. But mentorship can be a major shortcut when it comes to this entrepreneurship game. And like I said… I will never claim I have all the answers for you. Keep letting me know what your goals are and what you want to learn. As much as I can, I will do my best to introduce you to accomplished and credible people I know that can help you get start So that’s about all I have to say today on how to take the first step. Well actually… I would be remiss if I didn’t mention this. After all, my wife is Nicaila Matthews Okome, aka Side Hustle Pro, of the chart topping Side Hustle Pro podcast. I did not leave my job until things were up and running and making significant revenue and you don’t have to either. You can certainly get started on the side as a side hustle and still be effective, in my experience. You just need to be disciplined and take it seriously, subtract from the areas of life that you need to so that you can focus and give it your all. (guitar) Claude & Eddy Howard (drums), (Bass) Linwood & Lamont Booker (drums). Having an elder bass playing brother & often playing with another drummer, taught LB to be tight & literally how to ride with or on another groove. Excellent DJ lessons learned. The band members were all 3 to 5 years older & when the oldest member was on way to college, his whole attitude changed, as he was taken into what we now call 'the matrix'. Entering university, preparing for adult life & the dream of playing music & making records for a life time dwindled. The dream got sucked away into societies realities. The other 2 band members followed that same basic path. There was 'The MaD Drummer' losing his band family as each year got closer to being grown up. New York Hip Hop motion was starting up strong. The first modern day raves, block parties, school parties, 2 turntables & a mic parties were replacing bands performing 'everywhere'. Quickly 'dj'ing' became the fascinating 'thing'. Platinum Enterprise was performing at a well paid wedding. When the bands first set of music was finished, the dj started. The needle dropped on the vinyl & the static was loud enough to 'grab all attention'. Then it came in like the sound of a musical bomb dropping in front of your face…The hits of a snare drum & then horns smoothly flowing & the smoothest LOUDEsT clean & clear sound of madness. Kool & the Gang's live version of Summer Madness. The volume, the Bass & then, toward the end, the synthesised keyboard solo. The moment changed eL's life. The volume & bass coming out the Cerwin Vegas, which was far away from the turntables blew his mind into a musical oblivion & he knew…that's the path. Records!! Turntables! Big speakers!! The young teen got a summer job in which he invested in 2 turntables. That December his mother got him the mixer he was after. (Father did buy the 1st few drum sets). If one could today, imagine never seeing dj's mix. Not having any guides or rules at all. It was all new & nothing was set, & no leaders to follow. Lots of info on sound systems, making speakers, & use of crossovers etc., were somehow the most important at the time. Probaby due to the fact that sound systems were often thrown together from multiple 'family home systems' that came with lots of watts. Originate was the key. Tracks (beats) that no one had, was key. New & old music, different genres, nothing mattered & no one cared as long as it was hot & different/unique! The mix & manipulation of records quickly became more important then the actual sound of the system. & that is where DJ Bad shined like no other. His ideas on different ways of mixing were unique, & he quickly became a local fav. Building up to a radio stations (WGLI engineer to on air & then WBLS) as a mobile music jock, gave access to city wide block parties. The band members (all but the eldest) became crucial members of the 'Super BaD Crew. Growing, they went city wide. Block parties, halls, & onto creating events with our new sound system partners, Mark Blagrove & Michael Webster, both becoming key members of what later came to be Wild Pitch parties. Creating LaRhon Records gave reason to be at record pressing plants. Old factories, dark lighting, with the terrible smell of plastic burning. The friendly feeling in one of them, Apexeton. LB manufactured the 1st two LaRhon releases & there is where he met & befriended the owners, The Ropiak Brothers (City Limits), & the 2 coolest knowledgeable 'helping hand' guys, Silvio Tancredi (Northcott) & Frank Mendez (Nu Groove). Bad's 2nd batch of 12's came out thru the Apexton connections. Nu Groove & City Limits lead the path. With Apexton LB started his own distribution for some records pressed there. Around the same time 'Gotta Get Some Money' dropped on Nu Groove, it was the first glimpse into a record company as a family, & how it really operated. Touching both NY's film industry & banging music industry doors LB was laying foundations. With the heat & action turned up high, on to the 3rd batch of 12"s being released (the 2nd Nu Groove release 'True Story of House' & Lisa Angels 'Show Me' was buzzing in clubs in & around NY) an invite to finally perform in Europe came, yet he turned it down. Nu Groove techno artists were in & out of Europe, but the House music artists seemed to stay local. Berlin calling & BaD was not with it. 3 months and many many telephone calls later, Mark Ernestus finally convinced him to visit Berlin. 12 day trip never ended. The physical stay affair started with the mishap of a wrong return date announced (NY landing date was given/not the European flight take off, one day earlier). Mishap after mishap. Or so it seemed. Paths. Unseen paths layed down. synchronisation of life events become evident. With Mark E, (Hardwax) inside a reggae record store, ''with my back turned to the door, a voice calls out my 1st name & it's not Mark'' (the only person knowing it). Turn slow & almost into shock seeing a friend from high school. Dexter Porter, time to time singer in Platinum Enterprise, & personal friend of Chaka Khan. Together, years before, we've seen her perform & here he is, finding Lamont, in Berlin, in a reggae record store. He had another powerful & special woman eLBee had to meet. Odella Saille. She was the turning point to work in Europe. Offered a position in a new club as resident, & LB became assistant manager-booking agent-dj for the wonderous club called Exit. That gave him opportunity to stop trying to get home. Exit experience also gave way to building club sound systems, booking pop-ular artists (Sister Sledge/Gil Scott Heron/BG The Prince of Rap/Incognito) club management, rave operations, & months of (very little sleep) Friday to Monday basically non-stop. It also birthed the name change, as advised by an angel. Calls herself a witch, saying L.B. Bad (morphed from D.J. Bad) …''for numeric reasons should be more 'strong', than those 5 letters.'' rebirth- eLBee BaD On births, Exit was so big (holding 3000) a chosen few of us (working there) having offices upstairs, actually had artsy apartments (downstairs) in the club… It was in Exit, sunday to Monday morning Berlin hardcore Techno, where resident Dj Tanith dropped Smokebelch two weeks in a row as the last song. Life changer, seventeen 12's records, into the career & the 1st song to generate income, a lovely ambiental song named "New age Of Faith' (bonus track that Frank of Nu Groove did not want)…covered & reproduced by Andrew Weatherall (Sabres of Paradise). Building up a recording studio for the 3rd time, it took a while to truly find 'his groove'. The Berlin influence of hardcore Techno up'd his dj bpm's, yet never losing soul, the line of Tech House was crossed. Entering the 2nd record label family; DJ Hell put out a search party for 'Mr. BaD… International DJ Gigolo. Home of professionalism & true artist care! Never losing the Mad Drummer flavor & it shows up in complex rhythms again & again. *Gonna Be a Great Night (LaRhon). The time arrived when producers started asking eL to voice their recordings. Often taking the artist role instead of producer, more learning was in store, just by seeing how many other producers (from across the globe) create. Dole & Kom, Slam, Savas Pascalidis, Logo, Samuel Sessions, & Basic Channel (I slept With Her But Didn't sleep With Her). Music became more & more catorgorized & to help maintain production freedom, Mr. Bad started to add new characters to his own persona. eLBee BaD - the voice/the dj The Nervous DJ - hypnotic tracks The Mad Drummer - rhythm tracks (only drums) The Voodoo Man - tribal tracks Mad Man in the attic - samples & loops Dr. Spark - drum & bass/breakbeat The Banging Man - Techno LB GooD - will replace eLBee BaD (vocal retirement) Mr. GooD is the bad seed & The Prince of Dance Music is the brain & heart of it. —————————————————————- As the internet helped change how we listen to music, that new freedom allowed for wider music variation. Henceforth the return of Platinum Enterprise. Productions created today, with 'our band might sound like this' attitude. Giving room for more growth, the meeting of Randy Murray, former lead Trumpet player in Sun Ras Arkestra. Birth of the musical experience: 'Sun Ras Children' (Learned a lot of Jazz)

Millbrook Rotarian Joyce Heaton describes this year’s New Year’s Eve Millbrook a community event that is family friendly and alcohol free. Twelve years earlier, the Rotary Club of Millbrook was seeking a way to help bring the village and environs together as a community. In October of that year, Joyce—who was aware of First Night Celebrations in Boston and elsewhere—proposed that the club sponsor a New Year’s Eve celebration of music and events directed at children. That December saw the first celebration. Some of the music acts from that first occasion—jazz pianist Larry Ham and the Handman Family strings—have been featured every year since, while other popular favorites such as the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, Metropolitan Klezmer, and ragtime-and-blues piano scholar Peter Muir, have been present many times. A popular feature of New Year’s Eve Millbrook are the lighted buttons designed by local students. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/radiorotary/support
Fannie O’Linn Chadron Nebraska Dawes County Northwestern Panhandle Founder Attorney Teacher Show 062 Chadron The Northwestern Nebraska Panhandle town founded by Frances Maria Brainard O'Linn Show 062 I'm Mitchell Chadrow and this is the Listen Up Show Podcast Fanny was not only the founder of a town she was a noteworthy pioneer for settling the west, a school teacher, a postmaster, the fifth woman admitted to the Bar in Nebraska, a community builder and most of all a hero that should be studied by all in business and life. -> What are we going to learn today? -> What Legacy did Fanny Leave and how can her lessons apply to your everyday business and life? -> Why do an entire podcast on Fanny? ;After doing research on her story I was shocked that even people in the town of Chadron know little about her let alone Nebraskians especially how her story applies to business I started asking myself why has this most amazing woman somehow been placed on the back seat of history - maybe until now there has been no one to be her voice or maybe she has no relatives or family to tell her story. It really seemed unfair because she should at least be on a short list of notable Nebraska women. Tome, she really seemed to have been unforgotten but I’m changing all that now I mean we all have heard of William Jennings Bryan the orator and Nebraska politician read and heard stories of the Travelings of Lewis and Clark Know about The Showmanship of William F. Cody and of course the Notoriety of Charlie Starkweather. However, it’s not every day that a woman in the In the 1880’s helps start up a town. builds a community of people in the heartland of America becomes a pioneer settling the west, is the fifth woman to become an attorney in Nebraska and the 11th registered with the US Supreme Court - she was a postmaster, a mid wife, a school teacher, and so much more She was born back on April 13, 1848 in a small town called Magnolia the county seat of Harrison County Iowa, Fanny graduated at the University State University of Iowa in Iowa City as valedictorian and youngest member of the class' at the State University of Iowa in Iowa City. She became a teacher at Magnolia High School and then principal at Buena Vista High School. When her father moved to Magnolia Iowa it only had a population of 500 however by 1876 Magnolia was removed as the county seat, which left the place with but little else than a small, local trade. Hallowed be the name Magnolia to many a pioneer, who knew the place as Harrison County's best town. He held this latter position four years with headquarters usually at Iowa City, but most often he was out in the field examining postal matters in Iowa. Both of Fanny’s brothers were entrepreneurs George and Orville together started their own newspaper publisher business in 1859 called the Magnolia Weekly Republican and then later the Dunlap Reporter after several years the first newspaper business was sold and neither George decided to farm but also carried the mail Fanny was destined to be involved with the post office yuh see back in 1854 a post office was being set up in her hometown at that time Magnolia and Fanny's dad was involved becoming postmaster a year after the post office was established in 1855. Her brother George also became postmaster in Magnolia and 1862 was subsequently appointed postmaster of the House of Representatives in Iowa. George decided to lease the newspaper to a Judge FORD, instead of selling it outright. Magnolia’s Chief feature was Schools and churches; aside from being the county seat of Harrison County Iowa which contributed toward the upbuilding of the place. The early schools were kept in private houses. In 1858 the first school building was provided at that point. It was a poor "shack" of a house, two stories high, designed for agradedschool; it was used for school purposes until 1866. Again Fanny taughtthere ! However, by 1868 she met and married Dr. Daniel O'Linn. Dr. O'Linn was a Civil War veteran who participated in "Sherman's March to the Sea" and was renowned as a physician and surgeon. Fanny, her husband and two sons at that time decided to move to Blair County in 1872, where Dr. O'Linn set up business with Dr. S.B. Taylor. The year before her brother George had the itch to get back into the newspaper business so by 1871 he started his second paper this time called the Dunlap Reporter It’s no wonder why The family was described in HarrisoncountyIowa as being strong, high-minded and with true characters. Tragically Fannie's husband died suddenly in 1880, it left Fannie alone with two sons and by that time she also had a daughter. She had to rely on herself so she decided to immediately take that principal position of she promptly took the Blair schools, followed by Tekamah, and took a leadership role in education in Washington County for four years. Her plan settle her own small frontier settlement and call it O'Linn. Many twists and turns in this journey and like all business minded entrepreneurs your best plans don’t always go as planned - the question for fanny and you is how to handle these twists and turns when confronted that’s what makes you who you are and calls you toward your destiny You see the town of O’Linn was not merely being named such because Fanny had an ego although she had every right - she was accomplished and achieve morethenmost woman or men could at the time she moved west to Nebraska to settle O’Linn. But the name was to honor the memory of her eldest son, who had died shortly after their move to what would eventually be Dawes County Northwestern Nebraska called the panhandle some say Oklahoma Fanny homesteaded near the junction of the White River and Chadron Creek, then located in Sioux County near Dakota Junction but today it’s Dawes County. Her humble abode was merely one-room, 14- by 16-foot claim cabin half dugout and half soddy. She one of a few earliest settlers in Dawes, she noted that summer that "the only houses ... were around Fort Robinson (while) we had only to throw our lines in the White River to have a catfish (and) found 49 varieties ofwild flowers." As I mentioned earlier when her son Daniel Egbert was accidentally killed, locals began calling the settlement O'Linn in his honor. I also mentioned because of her father and brothers involvement with the postal system she didn’t wasteanytimeapplying for a post office in September of 1884, and that’s how the name O'Linn stuck. One of the first shops to open was owned by another settlor Burr Sheldon It didn’t take longfirothers to quickly follow with a hardware store, bank, druggistandsaloon, some of which operated out of tents before buildings could be erected. That December 1884 the first Methodist Church service in the county, known as the White River O'Linn Charge, was held in the O'Linn cabin by Rev. Joseph Gray. Early in 1885, the population of O'Linn was advertised as 500, replete with five saloons and a dozen stores. Thus, when the Elkhorn, Fremont & Missouri Valley Railroad began scouting the area for right of way, Fannie felt certain that O'Linn would be the natural site for a depot and siding. Unfortunately, her optimism led her to ask for more money than the railroad felt was justified, and instead they bought land some six miles distant at a site they named Bordeaux. In the summer of 1885, a county seat election for the new Dawes County chose Chadron on a vote of 582 to 3 for O'Linn. I have to think that the three votes fanny received was her vote her youngest son and her daughter How was it that this pioneer dynamic accomplished woman didn’t receive one other vote from anyone else In my research it was partly do to another settlor named Edward E Egan who started the first newspaper in the town surprising it wasn’t Fanny’s brother Orville who would also settle the area as well and the fact that the Railroad probably didn’t like being told by Fanny the more aggressive terms that her Homestead would become the location for the new Railroad stop. More about that on another podcast as I will do an entire story on Edward Egan the person who got the town and Railroad to rally around the name Chadron over O’Linn. Our wrap up round is actually sponsored by Chadron.net In honor of this special town of Chadron The Chadron.net website is not just for people who live go to school work in Chadron or only Nebraskians it’s a place to learn about the rich history of the heartland of American and all this area and surrounding terroritoty has got you and your family Chadron is known as the magic city even though Fanny didn’t get her wish to name Chadron O’Linn She taught us if things to work out you pick up the pieces dust yourself off and keep moving I became fascinated with Chadron because people would ask me if I knew there was a Chadrow NE and that there is a fire co and sports wear on the Internet called Chadrow - both turned out to be errors on the Internet never corrected but back in a lot of ways I’m glad because if you go back to Chadron.net you can learn more about the Chadrow 4 Chadron project bringing more tourists and people to the area and learn about our country’s founding and the amazing stories of people that come slice at Chadron.net and tell a story that can help inspire motivate you in your life and business Now let me tell you more about this amazing town of Chadron -> When the railroad arrived in July of 1885 O'Linn or now Chadron meaning the entire town literally picked up and moved to the new site - one store even kept operating while "being trundled over the prairie." Lowenthal How many towns are you aware of the history of the US that could or can just pick up and overnight move giving it the name the magical city Despite the perceived set back of not having her Homestead as the railroad stop or name of the town like a determined person she was with true character and grit Fannie moved as well too, and not only that she became Chadron's first postmaster. Later becoming what some say the fifth female attorney in Nebraska. However studying the law under the direction of her father the judge back in Iowa must have provided her great exposure to the law thus some say she might have actually been the 2nd practicing woman attorney in Nebraska Whatever her ranking, Fannie O'Linn was one of the originators of the Northwest Nebraska Teachers Association, one of the initial promoters of Chadron's library, and again its first postmaster, becoming "one of the most widely known and respected women in the northwest ... present at the first wedding, the first birth and the first funeral in Dawes County." It doesn’t stop there for those who say I have done all I can in business and life fanny kept going she was the first female insurance broker, was also involved heavily in organizations, such as the Women's Christian Temperance Union and the women's suffrage movement Yes O'Linn battled tragedy throughout her life, but she persevered, playing a crucial role in the settlement and development of her communities both in Iowa and Nebraska I was driven by this story for so many reasons - Just think she loses her husband then her oldest son she is on the western plains of Nebraska single woman in this really harsh tough life of circumstances who despite all of this pushed forward to her own future journey. To recap in conclusion Here is a list of this amazing woman's accomplishment that only a few ever achieve: She was admitted to the bar in 1885, was responsible for keeping the land office in Chadron, then started an abstract business, she started the town called O'Linn that eventually became Chadron. She was the first postmistress of the town, and was one of the first female postmistresses." she even served as a midwife and is believed to have been responsible for helping to birth most of the children born in Dawes County from 1880 through 1910. Her life was complex, full and varied. She battled with area ranchers and businessmen, was a correspondent for the Omaha Bee, served as president and historian for Dawes County for the Nebraska Historical Association, and was a charter member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Chadron. Her influence even extended into raising the young woman who would grow to fame as Dr. Leta Stetter Hollingworth, a pioneer in women's and educational psychology at Columbia University. Unfortunately, her youngest son also predeceased her and only her daughter (who had been born in Blair County Iowa) would survive her; her descendants eventually moved away from Dawes County, leaving no one to tell her story or recount her achievements - until now. By 1890-1891 she is listed asMrsFanny O'Linn attorney at law, notary public, abstracts, insurance, real estate, and loans. Her dad moves to Chadron around this time The last years of Judge BRAINARD's life were spent in Chadron, Nebraska, with his daughter. After attending a Freedom School as a high school student in the summer of ’64, Charleana Cobb of Blue Mountain was inspired to become active in the civil rights movement. In this episode, she recalls promoting a speech being given at her church by civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer. Cobb remembers the thrill of hearing Hamer speak that night and the shock of being told that the church had burned to the ground the next morning. That December, college students from Oberlin, Ohio came to Blue Mountain to rebuild the church as a project called Carpenters for Christmas. Cobb recalls how members of the community reacted to the sacrifice these Oberlin College students made in giving up their Christmas holiday.
