The eyes of the world have been on Kentucky these last few weeks with the buildup to the Kentucky Derby. Much has been made of the million dollar four-legged athletes, but what about the other component of the duo; the rider? The University of Kentucky Sports Medicine Research Institute (SMRI) is specifically aiming to find what, where and who needs their targeted interventions that can be designed to help improve safety. Dr. Greg talks with Kimberly Tumlin, Ph.D., UK College of Health Sciences assistant professor and research director of the Equestrian Athlete Initiative.

Hello everyone and welcome to another episode of the Performance Psychcast. Today we are very fortunate to be speaking with Colin Wilson. Colin Wilson started his performance and coaching journey in sport from age nine, winning national and international age-group medals in Table Tennis from the age of 13, and two Commonwealth silvers, aged just 16. Colin was always curious from a young age, and fascinated by questions like, “Where does High Performance Really Come From?”. As a result of having two amazing sport-specific and philosophical mentors, Colin became a coach educator age 19. He coached England Women, Men, Girls and Boys and later his son Sam became England Under 21s No. 1. After gaining an Economics and Statistics Honours degree at UCL, he was asked to help coaches and coaching programmes in other sports too and worked on sport-wide development programmes in partnership with BASES, UK Sport, sportscoachUK (now UK Coaching) and the British Olympic Association. Working to develop Olympic level coaches was another wonderful opportunity and a further vertical learning curve. With further fantastic mentors and training in traumatology and psychodynamics he bridged the journey to becoming an executive coach and organisational leadership developer, and was invited to support Nokia, BT Global, HSBC, Barclays, Delphi, Unilever, a major political party, and more. He now specialises in developing senior leadership capability and supporting multi-stakeholder, multi-agency situations with significant human dynamics. Ultimately, he relishes helping people and teams to find themselves, their best direction/strategy and their optimal, adaptable development path over time to fulfil their desired aims. UK Sport has slashed UK Athletics' funding for the Los Angeles Olympic cycle by nearly £1.75 million - and the organisation isn't happy. It's an 8 percent cut, and there's concerns it will impact funding for training camps and athletic coaches. UK correspondent Enda Brady unpacks the controversy further. British Cycling is one of the jewels in the crown of UK Sport but has endured its struggles in recent years, both in terms of governance and commercially. Jon Dutton joined the NGB as CEO, having previously served in the same role at the delayed Rugby League World Cup 2021, and has set about re-establishing a high-performance culture at British Cycling. Michael Bourne has a sports science background, so it is no surprise that he places a premium on critical thinking.“It is core to me,” the Performance Director at the Lawn Tennis Association [LTA] tells the Leaders Performance Podcast, which is brought to you today by our Main Partners Keiser.Critical thinking is a skill that also served him well in roles at UK Sport and the England & Wales Cricket Board amongst others before he took the reins at the LTA in October 2020 (with Covid restrictions still in place).“But,” he cautions, “leadership for me is about change and progress, and you can have the greatest thinking and the greatest ideas in the world, but if you can't drive and implement change, then it's for naught.”It starts with taking stock. “As a leader, make sure that you are ensuring everybody else is confronting those brutal facts and you've got to be ahead of that,” he says, adding that he too must be open to feedback.“It should be unacceptable in a high-performance environment to know there is a challenge and to take no steps to do anything about it.”In the first episode of this new series, Michael explains his mission-driven and people-centred approach to helping produce British tennis players with the means to compete with the world's best [33:10].During the conversation, we also touch upon the challenges the LTA faces and the benchmarks set [8:30]; his belief in the unique qualities of British tennis [14:30]; why the flow of information cannot be taken for granted at the LTA [38:30]; and the enduring power of the Lion King to move him [49:30].Henry Breckenridge X | LinkedInJohn Portch X | LinkedInListen above and subscribe today on iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher and Overcast, or your chosen podcast platform.
Jack Buckner is the former two Olympic Games athlete and 5000 metre European Champion who is now CEO of UK Athletics, the governing body for track and field in Britain. Buckner has held the same position at British Triathlon and more recently British Swimming. This followed a career in sports marketing at Adidas, in the UK, Germany and the US.The impetus for our conversation was a recent announcement that UKA was entering a three way partnership with London Marathon Events and the Great North Run, to create a new group, called Athletic Ventures. This new organisation is set against the backdrop of the governing body reporting a record annual loss of £3.7m in 2023. Most of that deficit was due to the staging of major events. UKA was awarded up to £150,000 by UK Sport to help stage the Diamond League meeting last year, after it approached the funding agency for help. Despite it being a sellout, UKA is reported to have lost between £100,000 and £500,000 from the flagship event. In this interview, Buckner talks candidly about the future of track and field, World Athletics recent decision to pay athletes at this summer's Olympic Games and his aspiration to create the Glastonbury of Track and Field. The WorldTour's Big Four stage racers – Vingegaard, Pogačar, Evenepoel and Roglic — are all on the road at last, as the European season really gets going. We start, though, with the news that the much-rumoured British Grand Départ, set to take place in 2026, has been shelved. UK Sport deputy CEO Simon Morton tells us, "We are not actively pursuing hosting in 2026," as the funding crisis in local government takes hold and cuts are made to government-backed sporting events in what's an election year. Yet after this latest gloomy development for British cycling, Morton suggests there is still some hope that the Tour and/or Tour de France Femmes could return to the UK, perhaps in 2027.After his demolition derby on his rivals at Strade Bianche, Tadej Pogačar is now turning his attention to Milan-Sanremo, one of two Monuments he's still to win. His 81km solo ride to success on Tuscany's white roads underlined once again that the UAE Team Emirates rider can create his own script for one-day races, but can he do that for Sanremo, the most predictable of the lot? We speak to Jayco-AlUla DS Matt White, who believes that the Slovenian is likely to make another early attack, but won't find is as straightforward to hold on when he does.In our final story, we look ahead to the finale of Paris-Nice, which is once again threatened by a big freeze as it heads towards high finishes in the southern Alps just inland from the Côte d'Azur. The SPOTY award is the main prize of an annual ceremony organised by the BBC. It was created in 1954 by Paul Fox, who was the editor of a sports magazine show called Sportsview. The idea was to honour the sportsperson who had achieved the most that year, as voted by the public. The first winner was Christopher Chataway, a runner who beat Roger Bannister, the first man to run a mile in under four minutes. Since then, the award has become one of the most prestigious and popular awards in British sport. It has been won by legends such as Bobby Moore, Daley Thompson, Steve Redgrave, Kelly Holmes and Andy Murray. The award is open to any sportsperson who is British or who plays a significant amount of their sport in the UK. The winner is chosen from a shortlist of 10 nominees, selected by an expert panel, and announced live on TV in December. Who won for 2023? Why was this person chosen? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen to the last episodes, you can click here: What are the pros and cons of homeownership in the UK? The Commonwealth Games is in crisis, without a host city for 2026 and possibly beyond. The last Olympic Games bidding process received just two hosting bids, with Paris and Los Angeles awarded 2024 and 2028 respectively. Beyond that 2032 has one current bidder. Five potential host cities for the 2022 Winter Olympics withdrew after voter referendums and public polling indicated a lack of local support. So where are we in sport's relationship with its hosts?Have sports events become just too big? Too expensive, too inflexible, out of synch with the climate crisis, lacking a clear return on investment for the cities and countries that host them, and leaving a questionable legacy in their wake. These questions don't apply to authoritarian regimes such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar and China, which gets to a difficult question for major sports rights holders: what are they for? Ultimately this is a book about self-management - how we lead ourselves so that we're better able to lead others. This is a concept that is central to everything we do at Supporting Champions. Jean brings a lucidity to the work that he does, he strives to be more human and connected in how he creates and supports others to high-performance and interestingly over the years he has evolved as a consultant and as a leader. This is an episode of ReThinking Sport, our series created in collaboration with Portas, the global strategy consultancy dedicated to sport and physical activity. Today's guest is Baroness Sue Campbell of Loughborough, the former chair of UK Sport who is now The FA's Director of Women's Football. We talk about the UEFA Women's Euros, currently taking place across England. We use this as a jumping off point to ask, what are The FA's hopes and plans for the women's game, how will the Women's Super League evolve, why has The FA decided against developing a relationship with private equity and what are the implications of these decisions. Sue Campbell is as ever, a straight talker and the result is a fascinating insight in to the game's present and future. One of the big ambitions of this series has been to look at the football market through the eyes of the people who own and control the clubs and the people in charge of the leagues and the sports' governing bodies. So previous episodes have featured Rick Parry, the chair of the EFL, Mark Bullingham, CEO of The FA and Kelly Simmons, head of the women's professional game at The FA and the WSL.On the club ownership side, we've had guests including Andy Holt, owner of Accrington Stanley, and Paul Conway, head of Pacific Media Group, one of the leading proponents of a multi-club ownership model, which is a feature of today's conversation with our guests Brett Johnson and Fabrice Bocquet. Every episode of ReThinking Sport can be found by searching Unofficial Partner via the big podcast providers, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts or via your favourite podcast app. Alternatively, you can go direct to unofficialpartner.com and search ‘Portas' and you'll find series one and two in their entirety.
