My guest today is Jen Oliver. Jen is a speaker, writer, and coach. She founded Speaking REAL Communications to help clients bring their truest voice to work and personal life; Jen believes communication should be relational, engaging, authentic and life-altering. Showing up REAL matters. With roots in Toastmasters, training in Fierce®Conversations and licensing as a leader in the WomanSpeak™ method, Jen also offers private and group coaching for high-stakes talks and keynotes. She is the Director of Curation and Speaker Coach for TEDxFolsom and several other U.S. based speaking events. Jen converses with vulnerability and candor with guests on the Listen for REAL podcast. And in recent years, she hosts The REAL Conversations Speaker Series – pop up events designed to equip and synergize people around ideas while building connection and community.. In this episode we discuss public speaking, personal growth, vulnerability and speaking tips .Website - https://www,realjenoliver.comIG - https://www.instagram.com/realjenoliverLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/realjenoliverFB - https://www.facebook.com/realjenoliverPodcast - https://www.listenforreal.comIn this episode you will learn:1. How to re-frame your anxiety around public speaking and partner with your energy rather than fearing it.2. Understanding why listening is a crucial skill in both personal and professional conversations.3. Why being your true self is more powerful than following any formulaic approach to public speaking. “You need to show up as you. This is probably the biggest thing I capitalize as a speaker coach is, and that makes me a little bit different. I'm so about them being them, not following formulas. ” - 00:03:43“When I equip speakers with tools, each one is about getting them into this new habit developing the new neural pathways that don't immediately jump to what the mind and the chatter is giving them, but slowing down, almost like meditation." 00:27:49“So storytelling is just, it's so beautiful in that it can make an idea that's worth transmuting or research. that needs to be shared, or a new technology or innovation, it suddenly makes it sticky and memorable and relatable. ” 00:40:27

I loved my conversation with Brad Walsh, a boudoir photographer and male ally in the women's empowerment space. Brad has a quality about him that makes a potentially sensitive topic totally accessible - we delve right into the art and beauty we've uniquely experienced when clothing is removed. This chat transcends lingerie, eroticism and taking pictures purely to create turn-on in another person (although many may pursue this art form for that reason). Not even close. Brad describes the way in which a woman emerges new, more whole, and enthralled with her own beauty after a photography session PLUS we explore the psychological safety needed to make that possible when we hold space for others.Join us for this conversation and have your perspective expanded with regard to the dignity, vulnerability, and strength that this artform offers. Resources referenced in this episode:WomanSpeak™ where women learn the art and soul of public speaking Where Women Learn the Art & Sol of Public Speaking. The story I read in segment two was taken from:Finding Your Own North Star by Martha BeckAbout our Guest:Brad Walsh, first and foremost is a father to two beautiful girls aged 23 and 25, a husband to an amazingly inspiring woman, a photographer, a published #1 International Best-Selling Author, an International Speaker and a podcast host/producer and a Story Doula who found himself wanting to inspire others during the pandemic. We have another kind of “me too” movement on our hands. This conversation with Eunice Brownlee blew my mind as she shared her personal experience with domestic abuse and the inequities often found in the family court system. It is enough to experience abuse at the hands of another; but to endure additional pain inflicted by the very system meant to arbitrate justice and provide protection? Disheartening.BUT conversations like this one change things! Eunice explains the often missed distinctions between domestic violence and domestic abuse - and that information holds the power to liberate many more of us.I gained an expanded perspective that allows me to contribute to meaningful solutions instead of looking away and simply assuming “it's all ok” (that's code for hoping I never have to deal with it myself). This convo is an opportunity to witness another person's story - thus, delivering more hopeful perspective that invites change instead of preserving the status quo.*A loving warning about our content, this episode references acts of domestic violence and homicide within families. Today, Eunice Brownlee joins us as we continue to talk about what healing means to each of us. She vulnerably shares her story of what it was like going though the court systems with her young daughter, who was a victim of domestic violence at the hands of her father. She talks about what healing looked like after the court cases ended… and how long and winding the road to where they are now has been. In this episode, we also chat about how we believe that trauma, in any form, can manifest in the physical. Eunice shares some of her own health struggles and how she believes they were impacted by all that she has been through. On the flip side of this, we also chat about the healing power of community and how telling our stories is one of the most empowering things we can do for our healing. Join us for an episode filled with lots of beautiful wisdom from an incredible woman …not to mention all the laughs.  Thank you for joining us today as we continue to explore what it means to be in the process of 100% healing. We often think we are successfully separating that which is personal (and in the past) - from that which is professional (and current). In this conversation, I talk with Deborah Brown-Volkman about her volatile upbringing and howfalling down and getting back up led to a journey of healing and growth - changing the trajectory of her career from problematic to exceptional. She took survival skills formed in childhood and made them assets in the workplace - there is power in the ability to read a room, being a deep listener, and seeing things that others don't.We also discuss the WomanSpeak™ program and the power of our voice in business and life. It isn't enough to “get a seat at the table” - women and marginalized individuals need to use our truest voice and deliver the wisdom that lives inside us at that table! Too often, we wait to be chosen or called upon to speak. It is game-changing to trust our own voice and be set free from imposter syndrome. Our guest: DEBORAH BROWN-VOLKMAN is a Career Optician who helps clients see new possibility in their career. Our guest: JULIE WOOD felt stuck for much of her life in the conditioning that she calls the “Good Girl Program” - which left her over-thinking, over-performing and over-conforming - afraid to be herself. She followed all the Rules, graduated from Princeton and spent 18 years managing big advertising clients like PepsiCo and JPMorgan Chase. Despite her outer success she felt inauthentic and unfulfilled.Nine years ago, she left it all behind, setting off with her now-husband on a 5-year Spirit Journey in a little Jeep Wrangler, visiting 69 countries along the way. While traveling through Mexico and South America, she was introduced to the “niños santos” (psilocybin mushrooms) in the mountains of Oaxaca and participated in over 50 plant medicine ceremonies. Eventually she started supporting others in the ceremonial space, which she still does today at retreats in Mexico.Through her transformative experiences with the plants, Julie began to connect with the gifts she's here to share. This was interesting info and food for thought:In 1994, Nixon's Assistant to the President for Domestic Affairs and Watergate co-conspirator John Ehrlichman admitted to the real impetus for the War on Drugs, as quoted in  Smoke and Mirrors: The War on Drugs and the Politics of Failure, in Harper's Magazine by Dan Baum, published in 2016:“The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I'm saying? We knew we couldn't make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did.” Join us next week and until then…keep communicating, connecting, and listening for REAL. A couple years ago I had the honor of participating in one of KC Baker’s courses, Speak Up for Your Business. At the time I had been an active member in my local Toastmasters group to overcome my fears of public speaking and was interested in learning KC's methods for speechwriting.  I was preparing to launch a Kickstarter fundraiser to publish my book, Just Be and although I had been practicing public speaking, I was still pretty terrified at the thought of taking the stage.  KC's training not only gave me a step by step process for writing the architecture, or, "bones" of my speech, but was also full with wisdom and unconventional practices that made me feel so much more confident at being seen and heard.  KC's work has been hugely transformational in my life and I am so honored to be sharing her wisdom with you today. In this conversation you'll learn how to transform fear and self-doubt around sharing your voice into total freedom, fun and confidence. KC also shares the powerful story of her son's birth as well as a few tips on how you can gain clarity on your message and what you stand for.  I hope you enjoy! "Most people think that the intensity you feel in your body before public speaking is fear, and it's something terrible that 'I have to make go away in order to feel free to speak up'. When the reality is - it's the feeling of your power, and the secret is saying YES to it, lean into it.  You will find so much freedom in that intensity." In this episode we discussed: KC's personal story related to public speaking, spoken word and performance  How we can reframe the intense body sensations we feel before we are about to speak in public Bringing the feminine and unconventional practices to prepare for a speech How to move beyond the fear and self-doubt that holds so many of us back from speaking up Saying "Yes!" to our power and my story of giving a speech at my grandmother's memorial How we can get clear on our message KC's story of the birth of her son The best way to start your career as a speaker and start landing speaking engagements Stay in Touch with KC: Website WomanSpeak Circles FREE GIFT FROM KC! Watch KC's 4-part video series: Speak Your Truth, Change the World   WomanSpeak’s founder, KC Baker, has helped thousands of women from all over the world in becoming authentic, powerful public speakers. Our guest Vanessa Wood is mother to two beautiful boys, she is a practicing Naturopath of 10 years, and a shamanic craftswoman who oversees and participates in several Women’s circles and has been a magnificent flash-mob 80’s dancer with the famed Cassettes. There has been a resurgence of women’s agency and the value of women individually and as part of society. We have been watching as this unfolds, unfurls and sometimes becomes undone. We have been watching it in the media, around the world in different countries and in our own lives, with our women friends, women in our family and women around us in the community. We have been watching it unravel with in us, too. It can feel uncomfortable, empowering, inspiring dangerous.. Women have been silent in so many many ways for so many centuries. In fact, Dr Amanda Furman who wrote and presented a groundbreaking 4-part series on the history of women called - The Ascent of Woman delves deeply into the place of women in society over the course of written history. She argues that the status of women is a barometer of a society’s tolerance, fairness and openness and that for the most part over the past 10,000 years women have been oppressed, denied basic freedoms and considered a means to an end. In this episode we are talking about Women and the value of sitting together in Circle. We have been watching as the movement of Feminism evolves and matures to become one that recognises women for their own capacities, rather than merely hoping for women to receive the same ‘deal’ that men have. Sitting in Circle with other women supports us to recognise where we are at, where we have been and where we are headed. It affords us the much needed support and empowerment and sustains us along the journey. It helps set us free from self judgement and fosters in us, compassion for others. For many women the practice of gathering has stayed alive and strong throughout history, and for some, it is a new concept, one they are rediscovering.Join us is celebrating this beautiful tradition!More information and to get in touch with Vanessa, visit - www.pbbmedia.orgCopyrightPBB MediaProducer/Host: Annalee AtiaInterviewee: Vanessa WoodMusic bite on this podcast: Habanot Nechama / Lovers

This is the second part of a topic that’s pretty common and can be pretty difficult for a lot of couples. It’s really just the idea that the wife is running the marriage and family and the husband is the breadwinner but not really engaged or involved as much as they would like him to be. We’re assuming you want to change that. Last week we looked at the wife’s role in this scenario. Today we are challenging the men. Before you get defensive, husband, know that we realize what a horrible place it is to feel disempowered or marginalized or even kind of useless. If you want to lead, to be involved and engaged, then this is for you, even though it may be tough to hear. Does Your Involvement As A Husband Matter? Yes. That’s the short answer. Yes. Even if your wife wants to do everything and run the family and the marriage, the research says this is not beneficial to her or to the family. Your involvement will help both your wife and your family to function better. Housework Let’s look at housework for a moment: when husbands are involved in housework, their wives have less psychological stress, feel more satisfied with their marriages and are overall happier.[i] These results were found in a study that compared the well-being of wives whose husbands were highly involved in housework with wives whose husbands were minimally involved in housework. It found that “wives whose husbands were minimally involved were 1.60 times more likely to be distressed, 2.96 times more likely to be uncomfortable with their husbands, and 2.69 times more likely to be unhappy.[ii] Parenting An article compiling the research from hundreds of articles looked for the benefits of father involvement. Here are a few things they found:[iii] Academic Benefits: School-aged children of involved fathers are better academic achievers. They are more likely to get A’s, have higher grade point averages, get better achievement test scores, receive superior grades, perform a year above their expected age level of academic tests, obtain higher scores on reading achievement, or learn more and perform better in school. Emotional Benefits and General Wellbeing: When fathers are involved, their children are less depressed, have fewer conduct problems, less emotional distress and negative emotions such as fear and guilt. Social wellbeing: Children with involved father have more positive friendships with less aggression and conflict and more generosity. Parenting Relationship: There is a positive correlation between marital quality and levels of father involvement in childcare, the quality of the father-child relationship, the father’s satisfaction with his role as a parent, and the father’s competence as a parent. I’m sure we could keep going on this idea that involved fathers and husbands makes for a better family and marriage. So we would encourage you, even if your wife has explicitly communicated she doesn’t want you involved, to challenge her on it. Maybe you’ve only assumed her desire from some non-verbal communication or misinterpreted some Womanspeak. It’s going to be a difficult conversation but you can find some help with it in Episode 55: How to Disagree Without Sinking Your Love Boat. The next question then, is how can a husband get more involved if his wife is taking control and pushing him out? How To Get Your Pants Back Before we actually get to the “how-to’s”, let’s look at some psychology. There is an area of research called Identity Theory. Identity Theory says that individuals seek to verify their identity – the person they see themselves to be – by controlling the situations around them so that these situations match their desired identity. For example, you may see this at work: a manager who sees himself as a problem solver actually kind of tweaks the experience of his direct reports so that they’re dependent on him and keep having to come to him to solve problems. It reinforces his identity and makes him feel better about himself.

Ever have a conversation that goes something like this? Hubby: So are we all good then, honey? Wifey: Yup. Hubby: You’re sure. Wifey: Yes, I’m fine. Hubby: OK then. I’ll take your word for it… What Exactly Is Womanspeak? Womanspeak is saying something where the meaning is different from the intent of the words spoken. And yes, I know it’s not just a woman thing. Not all women do it, and men are just as capable of speaking this way, we just stereotypically assign this to women (hence the name!). Just for the record, I prefer to call it husband-hearing! I’ll give you a few examples of what I'm talking about– my word or phrase will be on the left and Caleb’s “interpretation” will be in brackets: Fine (means: totally not fine at all) You choose (means: you figure out the exact thing I secretly want to do) Whatever (means: I only care about this enough to hold your anxiety hostage for another three days) That’s ok (means: like you’re getting any sex for the next two weeks) Communication is a tricky thing because it can derail in a variety of ways. When we communicate, we send a signal that may or may not be clear. The person receiving the signal may not receive it with the intent with which it was sent. Sometimes we may not even know exactly what we intend to send. Or perhaps our verbal communication can be in conflict with our non-verbal. We may even use words with one meaning but our tone of voice carries another meaning. Here are a few more examples to illustrate the point: “Is it cold in here?” could actually mean, “Can you please go turn up the heat?” Or, “Hey baby, do you want to snuggle? wink wink”. Or think of the question, “Oh, are we having tuna casserole tonight?” That could mean: “I’m delighted because it’s my favorite!” Or, “Seriously, we’ve had that five nights in a row.” Or, “I don’t really care, I’m just curious.” Really, depending on the type of day I’ve had at home, I will hear that question totally differently. Why Do We Do It? To answer this question, we delved into the deeper reasons why we might not speak clearly. Perhaps we don’t want to be the stereotypical nagging wife constantly asking for stuff so only hint at things instead. Maybe (and this is something I know I struggle with) we have a fear of rejection. If I ask Caleb if he wants to peel the potatoes and he says no, that’s just his preference. But if I say, “Could you please peel the potatoes?” and he says no, that could feel like a personal rejection. What about having a fear of intimacy or vulnerability? It’s a lot easier to test the waters with a vague question than ask for something outright and risk rejection. It’s a lot easier too, to say “Do I look fat in this?” than to be vulnerable and say, “I’m feeling insecure about my body right now”. We’ve been over the HOW and WHY we use womanspeak, but after having witnessed it in our marriage and other marriages, I can say that it does not bring about the desired response. When you say one thing and mean another, it does not build intimacy. Here’s what you need to do in order to have healthy communication between you: How Can We Have Good Clear Communication? 1. Learn to state your wants or requests clearly. For example, if you want him to do something, don’t start with “Do you want to….” Instead try, “Could you please…” 2. Don’t lie! Saying “I’m fine” when you’re not, is a lie. Be truthful and say something like “I’m not sure how I feel right now but if you give me some time to calm down I’ll come back to you as soon as I’m clear myself”. 3. State your expectations before it matters. This one is hard to explain without an example, so rather than an explanation, I’ll go straight into the story. If I’m planning something on the weekend, I need to state my expectations to my husband early in the week so that we’re both clear on what’s happening. That will prevent the feeling of abandonment and resentment that may come after the fact if the expectations weren’t stated clearly ahead o...
