3068: SHEQONOMI's Vision to Empower 5 Billion Women Across the Globe

The Tech Blog Writer Podcast

Have you ever thought about how a simple device, something as modest as a “dumb phone,” could bring transformative change to billions? In today's episode, we're diving into this fascinating intersection of technology, accessibility, and social impact with Anu Bhardwaj, the visionary founder of SHEQONOMI.  As the world's first and only women-led podcast platform aimed at the "bottom five billion," SHEQONOMI is making digital content and economic empowerment accessible to underserved women across the globe. From low-cost phones to inclusive content in over 50 languages, Anu's mission is to bridge the gender gap and bring education, health, and financial knowledge to women who traditionally lack access. SHEQONOMI isn't your typical podcast platform. It's specifically designed to work on low-cost mobile applications such as Jio, Cloud Phone, KaiOS, Android, and iOS. Anu's pioneering approach allows the platform to reach communities often left out of the digital revolution. Imagine being able to connect and educate through over 5,000 women-centric podcasts in diverse languages—empowering voices that span topics from health to entrepreneurship, all while rewarding users for content creation and listening. Anu also brings a profound personal story of resilience and commitment. Inspired by her daughter's questions about educational inequalities, she built this platform from scratch, even securing a prestigious $150,000 grant from the Islamic Development Bank during the pandemic. Her achievements don't stop there: from co-chairing the Blockchain for Impact Summit at the United Nations to being named one of Inc Magazine's Global Top 100 Female Founders, Anu has made it her mission to use technology to uplift women and drive positive change. So, what's next for SHEQONOMI? Anu is setting her sights on developing a "super app" for marginalized populations, integrating generative AI, and expanding partnerships to bring more voices into the conversation. Could this pioneering platform redefine digital inclusion for billions around the world? And as Anu continues to break new ground, who would she love to have a conversation with from the worlds of tech, venture capital, or social impact? Tune in to discover how SHEQONOMI is reshaping the digital landscape for underserved communities, one podcast at a time. Would you agree that technology's real power lies in its ability to unite and uplift? Let us know your thoughts!

We look at this well know model, now re-released for its 25th anniversary. We were also fortunate to have a Nokia-fanboy on the team for this one, someone who actually collects Nokias for hobby. Yes, we know, but we figure everyone needs to have a pastime don't they. Nokia 3210, 25th anniversary edition, reviewed Here goes, a deep dive, from someone who has a passion for retro Nokias. I'm a niche user of this niche product, so I'm not sure of the value of my comments to a wider audience. What I would say about the Nokia you have…… If you want a phone that is simple and ready to go, it fits the bill. Other models like the 8210 4G has more flexibility in how you can organise the options and set the display and shortcuts up the way you want to but if you don't want that, you're grand. The operating system is much better than some of the Nokia phones. The phone I had with the Kaios operating system (the Nokia 6300 4G) struggled to write messages fluently, particularly when faced with certain punctuation or apostropies. This model has no such problems. Silly little stuff You can set calendar events to repeat daily, weekly, monthly or yearly (but you can't specify the length of the interval yourself, so no fortnightly, or every 10 days). Some of the Nokia calendars have very limited space to insert items and others don't let you repeat yearly for some reason!) the stopwatch is simplified. There's no option to use it as a lap timer (so the clock resets to zero at every split and you can see each lap clearly). It will let your record your splits (so the time of each lap is recorded but then you have to work out the length). when you open settings, why do you have some setttings listed but others accessible through a settings wheel icon (predictive text). the "go to" shortcut button doesn't have all the "apps" as options to list (on this 8210 anyway). So I can't put the stopwatch in as an option with this short cut button. Why not? Seems mad. If you ask me, the phones have lots of quirky little nooks and crannies, as opposed to a fluid experience. On the 8210 I have, you can organised the position of the menu options when they are in icon display but not when they are in list display. Why not? Some Nokia's you can't organise them at all, not sure about the one you have. Worth testing The radio is likely to be good (it is on this 8210 4G) the internet the camera I would also say I only flicked around with yours for a few minutes and I am referencing passed experience off the top of my head from using 5 different modern Nokias. So if I was going to print with tbis and my name was going to be on it, I'd double check those things first. So they're good, particularly if you're not fussy (which you won't be surprised to hear, I am!!!!) More about the phone Nokia 3210 It's the mobile phone that defined a generation. And now, 25 years on from its original release, the legendary Nokia 3210 is back in Scuba Blue, Grunge Black and Y2K Gold- brought to you by European mobile innovator, Human Mobile Devices (HMD), makers of Nokia phones. 'Dumbphones' are making a comeback as people look to return to simpler times. In 2023 Human Mobile Devices (HMD) saw sales of the iconic Nokia 2660 Flip phone, double; and HMD expects further feature phone market growth in 2024. The devices offer a solution for a digital detox in a world where almost four in ten (38%) of 16-24 years olds worry they spend too much time on their smartphone. 1 Lars Silberbauer, CMO of Human Mobile Devices (HMD), comments: "The Nokia 3210, a cultural icon, is back at the pinnacle of global dumbphone boom as consumers look to balance their screen time usage with a digital detox. The Nokia 3210 has simplicity at its core, allowing consumers to be totally present. Forget dumbphone, this is 2024's fun phone." A quarter of a century ago the Nokia 3210 was launched. It quickly became a smash hit, and it connected hundreds of millions of people. For 2024 it's back. Only this time the focus...

You're probably listening to this on a smartphone. That smartphone probably cost hundreds of dollars, if not well over a thousand. (Looking at you, iPhone Pro Max owners.) For billions of people around the world, those devices are simply not affordable. Feature phones are alive and well, and KaiOS CEO Sebastien Codeville knows the landscape as well as anyone. KaiOS was created in 2015 out of Mozilla's failed Firefox OS project, and has become a hugely popular operating system on super-cheap phones. KaiOS devices cost as little as $17; they typically have smaller screens and lots of physical buttons; they prize durability and days-long battery life over fancy features. And yet the people who use them, use them in entirely familiar ways. They text, they watch videos, they pay for stuff. For people all over the world, KaiOS-powered “smart feature phones” are a first introduction to the internet, and in many cases their users' primary screen experience. Codeville joined the Source Code podcast to discuss KaiOS, the challenges of building an app store and hardware for cheap devices, and why smartphones won't kill feature phones anytime soon. Or maybe ever. For more on the topics in this episode:Sebastien Codeville on TwitterKaiOS2020's most popular KaiOS apps How Reliance Jio became the world's fastest-growing mobile networkHow KaiOS claimed the third-place mobile crownFor all the links and stories, head to Source Code's homepage.

Greg Nokes, Master Technical Architect at Heroku, is joined by Alex Broussard, the CTO of THINKMD. THINKMD is a technology company that's working to build next-generation clinical logic. The primary aim is to put healthcare tools in the hands of anyone, anywhere, but especially in places where healthcare access is limited. As Alex points out, the obvious challenge in such a platform is to optimize the application to work in low bandwidth settings. To work around this limitation, THINKMD designed their platform as a progressive web application, ensuring that, not matter what, it function as an "offline first" app. Data is collected and stored locally, and transmissions between the client and the server occur when Internet connectivity is restored. In addition to networking challenges, the functionality and the visual design of the app also has strict hardware limitations. The mobile devices running THINKMD are not smartphones, but rather older feature phones which lack touchscreens and keyboards. However, they're still very durable, with incredible battery life, and operate better under remote conditions. These phones run an operating system called KaiOS, which allows developers to build networked apps that run in Chrome browser environment. As well, THINKMD was founded by two doctors, which requires every update to the app to pass very rigorous clinical standards. Information that's presented cannot just have a good UX: it must also be accurate, as it's literally dealing with life or death situations. THINKMD's frontend runs on Vue.js. This choice was partially made because of Vuetify, which provides localization support, a component that's key to the app as it's used in over a dozen languages. By trusting how Vue and Vuetify support the look-and-feel of the app, Alex and his team can focus more on the backend data retrieval and delivery, including setting up duplicate servers across Asia and Africa to address latencies. For other teams who are building a multi-regional app targeted at low latency countries, Alex strongly suggests that you consider optimization techniques in advance of feature development. Links THINKMD's mission is to eliminate preventable deaths by increasing healthcare access via new and disruptive technologies KaiOS brings smartphone functionality to affordable devices
