Fair enough.Then everybody gets nostalgic about childhood discipline, which quickly becomes less “remember the good old days?” and more “should somebody have called somebody?” The crew remembers wooden spoons, belts, Hot Wheels tracks, fly swatters, soap in the mouth and the terrifying parental phrase that basically meant your afternoon plans had been canceled. It's another wholesome trip down memory lane from your favorite funny podcast, assuming your memories involve calculating the trajectory of a leather belt like you're working for NASA.Next stop: Burning Man, where the crew investigates the return of the infamous adults-only dome after last year's wind-related disaster. There are rules now: IDs, consent, no recording devices and, most importantly, no singles strolling in alone. Which naturally launches a completely necessary discussion about whether two buddies could simply pretend to be a couple to get through the door. Journalism is alive and well.Things somehow become more respectable when we arrive in Tulsa, where authorities are searching for a mysterious serial defecator accused of targeting businesses while dressed in an ensemble involving tiny underwear, a shower cap, a modified mask and Crocs. The most damning detail? The Crocs apparently weren't in sport mode. That's how you know this guy fears neither God nor law enforcement.And then comes Oreogate.A kindergarten mom reportedly asks the other parents to stop packing Oreos because her daughter gets upset when other kids have them. No allergy. No medical issue. Just the brutal realization that another five-year-old has cookies and you do not. I felt invisible in my own house. Like a doormat. Like the rules I set were something my son found funny. The anger built until I was short with everyone, and I once yanked the cord out of the wall and threw an Xbox across a room. I'm definitely not proud of that reaction and never thought I'd be that mom.What changed things for me was learning that a boundary has nothing to do with controlling how someone else behaves. That distinction sounds small but it's not.Cathy and I sat down for this one because we watch parents struggle with it constantly. Not with coming up with the boundary. The hard part is holding it, and there is one specific reason we see people fold, and it is probably not what you think.We get honest about our own attempts, including the ones that went badly. Cathy shares the boundary she was too scared to enforce for a long time. I share the one that took therapy to get through; the day the moving pods were packed and my son was in a sleeping bag in an empty room.Fair warning. We open the Wednesday show with DopeyCon updates, listener comments and a voicemail from Oskar in Sweden. After leaving rehab with no intention of staying clean, Oskar returns home to ten grams of heroin, begins injecting with a friend and saves that friend from a potentially fatal overdose using naloxone. Poet/writer/'clinician' addict Zach Frank returns to discuss anxious attachment, fear, resentment and the difficulty of responding thoughtfully when emotions take over. He remembers passing out on heroin while running a bath, flooding his mother's house and destroying his brother's Xbox before the damaged ceiling collapsed in front of his grandmother. Zach then takes Dave inside the jam-band drug scene. On his way to a Dominican Republic festival, he convinces a cab driver to find cocaine, stops at a pharmacy for a huge box of Xanax, absorbs liquid LSD through his palm, urinates in the ocean fully clothed and later smokes a “silly stick”—a joint containing marijuana and DMT—during a Disco Biscuits set. He also describes his final festival before recovery: obtaining cocaine and Xanax, taking ketamine and powerful MDMA pills, and eventually reaching complete spiritual exhaustion. He calls his mother crying, returns to New York and enters treatment. Dave and Zach discuss the painful gap between becoming abstinent and genuinely feeling well, the first moments of peace that make recovery worthwhile, and why addicts sometimes need to hold on through weeks or months of discomfort. They celebrate Dave's 11 years sober and compare the Knicks' championship comeback to the seemingly impossible transformations found in recovery. War is on their doorstep; the Allison Ranch, a local institution, is apparently coming under heavy fire. Sheriff Joe Bob and Deputy Wilson investigate. Things get rough. It's been four years since the previous That Texas Blood storyline. While Chris Condon and Jacob Phillips have never been busier, they've been itching to return to the title that solidified their reputation. We discuss what That Texas Bloodoffers them that no other story does. We explore how this series reflects our current moment and how genre tropes guide their characters toward revelation. During our introduction, we also discuss the sudden closing of Meanwhile…Coffee in Herndon, Virginia. It's where we founded our in-person Comic Book Club, which has become a staple in our creative pursuits.
