As I am preparing to attend what is certainly the most anticipated architecture event of the year, Expo 2025 Osaka, I invited New Orleans architect Trey Trahan who created the American Pavilion as my guest today. The World Expo events, also known as World Fairs, have always showcased the most cutting-edge inventions of their time. Eiffel Tower was built for the 1889 Paris Expo, and the Seattle Space Needle, for the 1962 Expo. It is where architecture is experimental, where it is shown at its best, where narrative and symbolism have been expressed in the built form. Expo Osaka has a particularly glorious legacy. In 1970, it was the first world fair held in Asia, featuring some of the most futuristic and visionary architectural expressions of their time. It was remembered by so many icons, including Isamu Noguchi's series of floating fountains.Expo 2025 Osaka is no less exciting. The American Pavilion comes to enable visitors to experience the American spirit. The innovation, culture, and industry of the country, as well as contemporary themes of sustainability, space exploration, education, all shine a light on what makes the American experience so special and wonderful.

Today I talked to Katherine Vaz about her new novel Above the Salt (Flatiron Books, 2023). In 1843-1846, on the Portuguese island of Madeira, five-year-old John Alves lived in jail and starved alongside his heretic mother, who was condemned to death for converting to Protestantism from Catholicism. Finally freed, John befriends young Mary Freitas, the adopted daughter of a wonderful botanist. Both families are forced to flee, and they end up in southern Illinois. John teaches signing to deaf children and Mary works as a gardener for a wealthy man who falls in love with her. She's torn after she and John find each other again, but he's off to fight in the Civil War. A mean-spirited trick keeps them away from each other and Mary accepts her boss's marriage proposal. This is a rich and detailed love story based on the Portuguese community of Jacksonville, Illinois, historical characters, events, and flower cultivation, a courtship that took place in the home of rising politician Abraham Lincoln, and a sweeping view of 19th and early 20th century America. Katherine Vaz is an award-winning author, a Briggs-Copeland Fellow in Fiction at Harvard University (2003-09), and a Fellow of the Radcliffe Institute (2006-7). Her novels include SAUDADE, (St. Martin's Press), was a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers selection, and Marlee Matlin (Solo One Productions) optioned it. Rizzoli Publishers picked it as one of their top three books of 1998, and the U.S. Library of Congress chose it as one of the Top Thirty International Books of 1998. Her collection FADO & OTHER STORIES won the Drue Heinz Literature Prize, and two of the stories won her a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. OUR LADY OF THE ARTICHOKES won the Prairie Schooner Book Prize, and the title story was the springboard for a one-page film idea that was one of eight national winners in the 2014 “Write Start” contest co-sponsored by the New York Film Academy. The one and only Kara Lindsay returns to "E-Ticket to Broadway" to share more of her love for Walt Disney World as well as the magical world of Disney. This beloved star of "Newsies," "Wicked," and "Beautiful" has been a true fan of Disney ever since she was a young girl in Rochester, New York, and continues to love Belle to this very day. From watching the animated films each Christmas, to her early trips to Walt Disney World, Kara discusses how deeply Disney impacted her, and how thrilling it was to walk through Minnie Mouse's House in Toontown as a child. During the episode she shares a lovely story about how she performed at the American Pavilion at EPCOT as a high school student with her Show Choir, and how she returned to that very same stage years later to star in the Festival of the Arts Concerts. Though still a fan of Minnie Mouse, the young-at-heart Kara reveals her love of "Flight of Passage," "Soarin'," "Rock 'n' Roller Coaster," and the Pixar films, as well as what it was like to take her son Emerson to the Parks for his very first time (and meeting Mickey!). Of course she and David chat all things "Newsies" on this episode of "E-Ticket to Broadway." Listen as Kara discusses her experience of watching the film as a kid, her exciting (and nerve-wracking) audition process for the Broadway production (including doing scenes with Jeremy Jordan), creating the role of Katherine Plumber (and mastering "Watch What Happens" in rehearsals), and realizing that Katherine is the best Disney Princess she could have ever played. Play along with "Watch What Happens OR Watch What Happened" where David shares a Disney Theme Park event, and Kara needs to determine if that event has already happened or will happen. What's the one moment Kara wishes she could magically revisit onstage at the Nederlander during a performance of "Newsies"? Listen to find out! This episode also features a chat with Jeffrey E. The Two Gay Geeks have a chat with Rasha Mohamed and Ayman Samman about their short film, Jumper, that will be making its world premiere at Cannes Film Festival on May 19th at the American Pavilion. They were selected to be a part of the Emerging Filmmaker Showcase. We chat about who they are and their journey to making this short film with a powerful message. We want to thank our friend, Patricia Chica for putting us in touch with this dynamic filmmaking duo. They are going places. About Jumper Jumper follows a distressed crisis negotiator (Ayman Samman) who attempts to rescue - off the ledge - a young man (Mico Saad) who questions his sexual identity. Although the film tells the struggles of Middle Eastern LGBTQ individuals, its message of acceptance transcends cultural boundaries, and makes it undeniably universal. Jumper is helmed by Egyptian-American actor-director Ayman Samman. In this powerful yet intimate 11-min film, the subjects of sexual identity and suicide are trapped in a vertiginous dilemma between morality and choice, following tradition or following your heart. The short cautionary tale aims to spark a much-needed dialogue in the Middle Eastern community, while featuring dimensional, non-stereotypical characters from that group.
