Send me a messageIn this episode of the Sustainable Supply Chain podcast, I'm joined by Jen Chew, Vice President of Solutions and Consulting at Bristlecone. We get into a practical, no-nonsense conversation about where supply chain sustainability and AI adoption really stand today — beyond the hype.Jen shares how the conversation around AI in supply chains has evolved from experimentation to meaningful implementation, with companies now systematically exploring real use cases like AI-driven sales and operations planning (SNOP). We also discuss the critical difference between traditional AI and generative AI, and why understanding that distinction matters when shaping supply chain strategies. One key takeaway: sustainability doesn't have to cost more — in fact, when approached holistically, it should drive efficiency, resilience, and cost savings. Jen explains why organisations need to focus on building data readiness and upgrading their workforce's analytical skills if they want to succeed with AI and sustainability initiatives. We also explore:How AI is already improving supply chain decision-making todayWhy sourcing strategies are under renewed pressure from shifting trade policiesHow to spot real AI opportunities versus over-hyped featuresWhat roles tools like DeepSeek and enterprise solutions like SAP Joule could play in democratising AIIf you're wondering how to future-proof your supply chain while navigating sustainability goals, regulatory volatility, and the flood of new AI tools, this is the episode for you.Listen now to learn actionable insights that could make a real impact.Elevate your brand with the ‘Sustainable Supply Chain' podcast, the voice of supply chain sustainability.Last year, this podcast's episodes were downloaded over 113,000 times by senior supply chain executives around the world.Become a sponsor. Being a marketer today is challenging enough, just imagine what it's like for the next generation of brand leaders coming in to study marketing. On this episode of Looking Outside we explore the mindset and skills that future brand leaders are considering, with Adjunct Professor at SMU Cox School of Business, Radhika Zaveri. With over 20 years experience leading billion dollar brands at some of the world's leading organizations, Radhika brings a wealth of wisdom to her marketing students. But some of the most critical lessons she is teaching them may be surprising. While Radhika says the foundations of marketing haven't changed, what is often overlooked is an ability to build relationships, tell your own story to corporate stakeholders and accept the responsibility of always serving the customer. Lessons aren't just for the classroom, says Radhika. It's when we become life-long learners that we serendipitously create new pathways to success, well and truly after school is out.----------More:Looking Outside podcast www.looking-outside.comFollow Jonathon on X & ForbesWatch Jonathon's panel at the 2024 Dubai Future ForumExplore Jonathon's experiments: A Clock in the Forest, Centuries of the Bristlecone, Millennium Camera, Tasting Tomorrow, Alaska River Time.Connect with host, Jo Lepore on LinkedIn & X----------⭐ Follow & rate the show - it makes a difference!----------Looking Outside is a podcast exploring fresh perspectives of familiar topics. While humans were leaving the Stone Age and entering the Bronze, some Bristlecone pine trees grew from seeds to sprouts. They've been growing ever since. These 5,000-year-old pines are among the oldest organisms on Earth. Superlatives are also appropriate for the towering redwoods. Trees are amazing in many ways. They provide us with timber and cool us with shade, they sequester carbon and release oxygen, and are home to countless species. But they are also marvels of evolutionary adaptation. We consider the beauty and diversity of trees, and learn why their future is intertwined with ours. The very best philosophy is equal parts exhilarating and distressing. As one of the most profound pursuits towards greater understanding, through the love of wisdom, philosophy employs logic and demands critical thinking. But at worst it is left in the esoteric world of theory: disconnected from the world we live in. Out of touch. While philosophy is the practice of asking questions, experimental philosopher Jonathon Keats asks questions of it back. On this episode of Looking Outside we explore active, participatory thinking through real world experimentation with philosophical hypotheses and ideas. Jonathon shares how he pursues curiosity by creating tangible artefacts that others can interact with. By "doing" philosophy, Jonathon argues, we can create pathways into rabbit holes and an invitation to deeper exploration. ----------More:Looking Outside podcast www.looking-outside.comFollow Jonathon on X & ForbesWatch Jonathon's panel at the 2024 Dubai Future ForumExplore Jonathon's experiments: A Clock in the Forest, Centuries of the Bristlecone, Millennium Camera, Tasting Tomorrow, Alaska River Time.Connect with host, Jo Lepore on LinkedIn & X----------⭐ Follow, like and rate the show - it makes a difference!----------Looking Outside is a podcast exploring fresh perspectives of familiar topics. The FDA Group's Nicholas Capman welcomes Jen Chew, Vice President of Solutions and Consulting at Bristlecone, to discuss how life sciences companies can effectively implement AI in their supply chain operations. Jen sheds light on a few practical approaches to AI adoption in an industry still adapting to post-COVID realities. Discussion points include: Strategic Implementation Approach: Jen emphasizes the importance of starting with simple, tactical applications before moving to complex strategic implementations. She advocates for a focused departmental approach rather than scattered company-wide experimentation. Data Quality and Regulatory Compliance: A major focus is placed on the critical role of data quality, particularly in regulated environments. Jen stresses that life sciences companies must build robust, FDA-validatable datasets before implementing AI solutions. Transforming Core Processes: The conversation explores how AI could revolutionize key operations like Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP), potentially reducing multi-day sessions to just hours through pre-run scenarios and more efficient planning. Organizational Readiness: Jen discusses how companies can assess their AI readiness and build internal capabilities, warning against the temptation to wait for enterprise vendors like SAP to provide complete solutions. Future Outlook: Looking ahead to 2025, Jen predicts massive data projects will be crucial, emphasizing how organizations must combine industry-specific knowledge with their unique data to create competitive advantages in AI implementation. ____ The FDA Group helps life science organizations rapidly access the industry's best consultants, contractors, and candidates. Our resources assist in every stage of the product lifecycle, from clinical development to commercialization, with a focus in Quality Assurance, Regulatory Affairs, and Clinical Operations. Great Basin National Park, located in eastern Nevada, is a stunning example of the diverse beauty of the American Southwest. In this episode, we talk about why you'll want to put a visit to this park in your wish bucket the next time you plan a trip to this part of the country. Home to the mesmerizing Lehman Caves, Great Basin NP is one of the best least-visited parks in the NPS system. The caves, one of the park's main attractions, are an intricate cavern system complete with stalactites, stalagmites, and unique shield formations that have been forming for over a half million years. In this episode's History Channel, Karen delves into the unique story of how Lehman Caves became a National Monument more than a hundred years ago, long before the area became a national park. We also describe the park that's above ground and its rich array of ecosystems and landscapes. From the Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive up to the Bristlecone pine forest and on to the only glacier in Nevada, we share some of our favorite things to do and see in the park. And we take you to the small town of Ely, Nevada, just outside the park, where you can step back in time and experience its history by visiting the East Ely Nevada Northern Railway living museum, in addition to some very unique beehive charcoal ovens that were once used as hideouts for stagecoach bandits. If stargazing is your thing, few parks are better than Great Basin for viewing a brilliant night sky. Recognized as a Dark Sky Park, the absence of light pollution allows for unparalleled views of the Milky Way, shooting stars, and distant galaxies, making this park one of the best places in the country to gaze at the heavens above. So what about the big ones? The Growing Season spends much of its time chatting about the newest varieties of plant materials to grace the aisles of nurseries. But how about the monolithic entities that have dotted our skies for hundreds of years?Bristlecone pines, giant sequoias and dawn redwoods have co-existed with humans for centuries and Jack, Lynne and Matt McFarland chat about them. 300 year old cedars and ancient cacti are also focused on. Kori Kody joins the trio from California to chat about the horticultural elders that grace the grounds at Berkeley. The elders, the Jedi council - that's what the McFarland's focus on today. Several years ago I went on a hike with my family in Great Basin National Park to see the Bristlecone Pine trees. What I learned about these trees helped me see more clearly how we can all stay strong during times of adversity.Episode Discussion PointsHow we visited in October 2019 in Great Basin National Park, and Nathan wasn't very happy about hiking in the snow.As we approached the grove of Bristlecone Pines I was amazed by what I learned reading the placards about these ancient and resilient trees. Facts About Bristlecone PinesSome Bristlecone Pines can live nearly 5,000 years and are the oldest living things on our planet. Most of these pine trees have been alive 3,000 to 5,000 years. Imagine them clinging to rocks when the Romans, Jesus Christ, Cleopatra and the construction of the pyramids. The species are native to the Rocky Mountains and other ranges of the southwestern United States. The usually grow at elevations above 5,500 feet and up to 11,200 feet.We went and saw the Great Basin Bristlecone pines at their high elevationspiral out from seemingly impossible soil of limestone rockBristlecone pines in Great Basin National Park grow in isolated groves just below the tree-line. The conditions in which they live are harsh (with temperatures that drop well below freezing), a short growing season, and high winds that twist the trees into almost human-like forms along their limestone ridges. Because of these conditions Bristlecone Pine grow very slowly, and in some years do not even add a ring of growth.Often they twist into gnarly shapes which makes them very strong and they stay standing for centuries even after the tree dies. The Bristlecone Pines grow in rugged conditions in the high mountains and in the middle of desert valleys. They have an unusual ability to adapt to their environmentsThey can also live in isolation where other species cannot survive 3 Tips for Strong Growth in Adversity 1. Grow Slow, be patient, wait on GodSlow down in times of adversity, so you can process change, make time to absorb God's goodness into circumstance and be able to grow strong—producing the resin needed to resist the adversary who wants you to decay. The bristlecone pine is the world's slowest-growing treeOne tree (which was still alive) had a sample of its core removed which dated back to 1126 BC!!!! Nutrients are scarce, slow-and-steady approach to growth, Example: Hollow Tree: different tree which is about 2000 years old,Grew too fast which made its center more subject to decay—and the tree's center rottedBut the tree is still alive in its outer rings—being more wise and slow as it has aged.Related Bible Verses About Slowing Down in AdversityIsaiah 40:31 “But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.James 5:7-8 “Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh.” 2. Adapt to Adversity: Stronger in ChristFreezing, harsh, remote conditions can make you grow strong and stand the test of time. The environment's combo of tough conditions—especially freezing temperatures, dry soils, high winds, and short growing seasons—makes them...

One of the Reno area's few substance use, and gambling, addiction treatment facilities is the Bristlecone Recovery Center. The nonprofit is named after bristlecone pine, a tree found in Nevada, Utah and California. The center uses this analogy: This remarkable tree can fully regenerate itself, even on the brink of death. Just like the Bristlecone Pine, the people who seek help at our facility for addiction, gambling, and mental health issues have experienced negative environments, weathered many storms and come dangerously close to death. On today's show we talk with Peter Ott. He is the executive director of the center and he speaks candidly about the realities of addiction in the Reno area. In this debut episode, Madison and Abbey give a brief history of why they started Bristlecone Firesides. They discuss disconnection from the Earth and the tragedy of living decontextualized. And more to the point, they discuss the spiritual impacts of living in the culture of disconnection and how we can subvert those impacts through At-One-Ment and regaining a connection to the Earth. *Forgive the audio quality in this first episode. True to form, Madison is good with dirt, but bad with technology. **Corrected Aldo Leopold Quote because Madison's memory is bad: “There are two spiritual dangers in not owning a farm. One is the danger of supposing that breakfast comes from the grocery, and the other that heat comes from the furnace.” Books and Links: Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer A Sand County Almanac by Aldo Leopold The Art of the Commonplace by Wendell Berry Let Them Eat Dirt by B. Google's quantum computing researchers have been planning a party—but new results from a competing team at China's Alibaba may have postponed it. The China-America corporate rivalry on an obscure frontier of physics illustrates a growing contest between nations and companies hoping to create a new form of improbably powerful computer. In March, Google unveiled a chip called Bristlecone intended to set a computing milestone.
In shaping future mobility, complex issues need to be addressed which stretch the current generations of computers and server systems to the limits of their capabilities, or even beyond. It is hoped that quantum computers will make it possible to resolve such tasks and to speed up work in this area. Daimler is thus pursuing strategic research partnerships in the field of quantum computing, and has signed a cooperation agreement in this area with Google. The design of Google’s recent 72 qubit Bristlecone chip features the highest number of quantum bits ever used in a quantum computer.
