Get ready to be enchanted! In this episode of the Reading with Your Kids podcast, we had the pleasure of chatting with the acclaimed magician, Jeff McBride. Jeff shared his incredible journey into the world of magic and how it all started with a simple "pick a card" trick that changed the course of his life. Jeff's passion for magic is truly infectious. He explained how a deck of cards is a treasure trove of stories, with each suit and number representing different elements of the natural world. From the 52 cards symbolizing the weeks of the year to the four suits mirroring the seasons, Jeff showed us that magic is so much more than just sleight of hand - it's a gateway to storytelling and imagination. As a master of his craft, Jeff also shared his teaching philosophy. He emphasized the importance of not just learning magic tricks, but diving deep into the psychology, theater, and history behind the art. Jeff encourages his students, young and old, to explore the full spectrum of magic, from dance and acting to philosophy and folklore. One of the highlights of our conversation was Jeff's discussion on the power of repetition in storytelling. Drawing from the work of renowned child psychologist Bruno Bettelheim, Jeff explained how repeated exposure to stories helps children internalize the lessons and gain confidence by identifying with the protagonist. Whether you're a seasoned magician or simply looking to add a little wonder to your family's reading time, Jeff's insights are sure to inspire. So get ready to unlock the magic of storytelling and create cherished memories with your loved ones! We also had a chance to chat with Dr Andrea Clark. Dr Andrea, a clinical child psychologist, celebrates the importance of communal meals and emotional learning in her debut children's book, "Welcome Home, Indigo Owl," which explores themes of community, friendship, and emotional growth. Mike Martini Taft Street Winery co-founder Mike Martini is our guest on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger today. Taft Street Wines is family owned and operated since 1979 including their time as home winemakers. They started officially as a bonded winery in 1982. Mike tells how his friends liked their wine so some of them decided to form a winery. They are bringing in grapes now on their forty-first harvest. Today, instead of a cellar wine, Dan Berger has brought a new Rosé from Chile, called Maquis Rosé, a blend of Cabernet Franc and Malbec. White Zinfandel saved the Zinfandel crop, and so that was important for the business, but people are making true Rosés now. Mike has brought six wines for tasting, two Pinot Noir, two 2021 Sauvignon Blanc and two Chardonnay. They will taste each pair, one against the other. The first Russian River Valley Sauvignon Blanc is special because there is not a lot of Sauvignon Blanc left in vineyards in the Russian River Valley AVA. It is high in acidity and was fermented in stainless steel. It is lemony, lean, crisp and delicate. The Sauvignon Blanc Explosion Sauvignon Blanc is in heavy demand these days, it's sold out everywhere. The second Taft Street Sauvignon Blanc is similar but it's two steps forward, because it has a little more lees contact and some barrel aging, so it is more like a Chardonnay. Dan says that both would benefit from three to five years. He might age the steely one for seven or more years, for its aroma to develop. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the coolest bargains on wine, beer and spirits. Sauvignon Blanc is relatively rare in Russian River Valley, which is mostly Pinot Noir these days. Dan Berger says that a creative winemaker can play that game and win. Sauvignon Blanc from Russian River Valley is hot, yet there is even less of it than before. Taft Street Winery Tasting Room 2030 Barlow Lane in Sebastopol, north of Occidental Road, north of town. It is NOT in "The Barlow" which is a wonderful place with great businesses, but Taft Street Winery is "not at the Barlow!" for the record. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Rodney Strong for the latest on the 2022 Summer Concert series. Next they taste the two Chardonnays. Again, there are two different styles. The first is a generic stainless steel style Chard with only a small percentage saw some wood. Mike thinks this is what Russian River Valley Chardonnay tastes like. It has acquired some fruit and spice but hardly any of the oak flavors. The second glass is richer and more full-bodied. It was fermented in French oak and has some malolactic fermentation. Mike Martini readily admits that he is not the winemaker, and gives the credit to his winemaker Melissa Kuhn and consultants Jeff McBride and Guy Davis.

Today we talked with one of magics greatest magicians, Jeff McBride. Listen to his insights and words of wisdom, especially the advise at the end.
“Master Payne” Fifield is a multidimensional renaissance character. A member of the Society for Creative Anachronism, Payne (as he likes to be called) is one of the instructors at Jeff McBride's “Magic and Mystery School” in Las Vegas. He is also a regular performer at the “Moisture Festival” and other medieval fests throughout the greater northwest. As his website says, “Seattle's Premier Prestidigitator.” But many magicians who attend MAGIC Live! know him as the master of the PowerPoint with his clever and witty presentations at their events. He also has a lot to say about working at outdoor festivals in the great northwest. He scatters a lot of advice throughout this episode that many of us will benefit from in our own presentations. He also talks about the importance of scripting and how public speaking is different from talking during your performance. This week on Be On Air we had the honor of speaking with Tobias Beckwith. He is an author, producer, director, manager, magician, teacher, and speaker. Together we explored the power of words, identified ways to train for better communication, discussed what skills are valuable when growing a business and producing a live show and most importantly how magic can help everybody reach their dreams. This is a truly inspiring conversation, and we are delighted to share Tobias Beckwith's insight into the magic of voice and theater. After earning his master's degree and teaching theater arts at the University of Pittsburgh for several years, Tobias moved to NYC to discover what the real world of theater might be like. He landed on the management and production teams of the long-running Fantastiks and Oh! Calcutta!, and spent two years working on the original Broadway and first touring show of Sweeney Todd. Tobias began helping Jeff McBride develop his first full evening show in 1976, and in 1988 became Jeff's manager and producer for all his shows. He has worked as manager for Jeff McBride and Marco Tempest for many years and has worked as both director and advisor for many other magicians. Las Vegas-based magician, Tim Wise, talks about 3-D printing, working with David Copperfield, leaving school to tour with Dennis Loomis, hosting Jeff McBride's "Wonderground", Abra.TV and more. Tim has so many stories that it was hard to keep this podcast to one hour as we could have easily spent the entirety of our conversation on any one subject. View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize Tim discusses how he came to become The Genie, thanks in large measure to Jeff McBride. But his humble beginnings in magic take him back to his teenage years when he basically “ran away with the circus” and pursued a career on the road touring with Dennis Loomis. Tim talks about that experience near the end of this episode that alone could have filled this whole episode with stories. This week I talked with a dear friend, Bryce Kuhlman from Phoenix (www.brycekuhlman.com, www.wisdomrobot.com). I met him at Jeff McBride’s Magic and Mystery School in Las Vegas in the late nineties. As faculty members we performed and taught classes, we went to festivals, we did workshops both in Amsterdam and Phoenix, we spent several vacations together with our partners and we’ve met online every week for almost ten years. In the podcast you’ll understand why this is a neverending exchange of ideas and creating products. He shares how he’s deeply motivated by discovery and won’t accept failure. That also helps him to fight through adversity.

(This podcast is in English.) I met Christos Kritikos at a Magic & Mystery School Masterclass by Jeff McBride who will be on the podcast in a couple of weeks. I was a guest teacher and discovered that Christos travels through the world as a tour guide and through the mind as a magician. We talk about the relationship between performance magic (tricks) and life magic (transformation), why many magicians lose their sense of wonder and only focus on tricks. We dive deep into the background and purpose of magic and alchemy, mindreading, hypnosis, divination, religion and how this knowledge helps him to turn life into something interesting and overcome adversities in his life.

Kenton Knepper (www.wonderwizards.com) is a world famous mentalist. As a magician he influences the mind in impressive ways. We both teach at Jeff McBride’s Magic and Mystery School in Las Vegas and have had many in-depth conversations about the art of magic and about transformation. But we’ve never talked this long about his other love: music. In this conversation we explore his own transformation to acknowledging the musician in him. And a very special type of musician: one who touches people and influence their lives for the better with sounds.
Nationally touring, Brooklyn based comic Brian Enck examines COURAGE in stand-up comedy. It takes courage to start and to keep going. It takes courages to speak your "truth" or to speak candidly about your flaws, mistakes, or personal weirdness. It takes courage to look the fool. Yet it's that vulnerability that can yield some of the most powerfully funny comedy experiences. What are some tricks performers use to get the courage to act despite those fears? We cover this and a lot more via bits by Dave Chappelle, Tig Nataro, Brian Enck, and Jeff McBride.
Ep82: In this episode Ian Brennan is joined by Ian McGarva. The two Ians have been friends for many years and both hail from 3SM magic club in Staffordshire. Ian Mac has a hugely successful career in children’s magic but is now moving from that towards puppet creating at Creative Puppets. Listen in to find out why; “If you’re not improving yourself then you’re just moving backwards.” ; “It doesn’t matter if your performing from a biscuit tin – it’s the magic that counts.” ; Where Ian Mac Keeps his band saw; and see if you can spot the comment “Get in there Jeff Mcbride!” All of this and more in Episode 82. It's the end of the holidays, so it's time to talk a little more about Jesus. Both outrage topics have to do with Catholics this week- one from Australia, and one from Spain. Jeff McBride (Let's Talk About Sets podcast) joins us to discuss them.
Jon and Jeff steal the Declaration of Independence.
We’ve got more episodes on the way, but it’s summer. Weddings, relationships, shows, etc. In the meantime, have a listen to a comedian Sandip Sen, Harrison Tweed, and Jeff McBride just geek the fuck out about the sadly deceased comedy genius, Greg Giraldo. We listen to his closing bit, called “Happy Birfday” from his 2009 album "Midlife Vices." We’re so giddy over it that we don’t even have a decent analysis between three of us. Then we listen to one little joke from George Carlin that shows what you can make funny once you’ve been doing it for four decades.
Jeff McBride and Sandip Sen host this early episode, and they have a blast diving into Patrick's bit about how he is keenly aware of his desire for attention and how he can relate it to a very taboo subject...but no spoilers.
The Rules of Acquisition: A Star Trek Deep Space Nine Podcast
24th century music sucks. Dax plays a song, becomes a moody teenager, and learns that her hormones are all out of whack. So... off to the Trill Homeworld to solve a mystery, learn a totally new explanation of Symbiosis, and take some milky baths with slugs! Acting is discussed. As is master magician Jeff McBride! But mostly slugs! Lots of trying to figure out what the heck the deal with Trills are. Plus we read some emails this week. Can you put us in our place? Feel free to give us your thoughts 917 408-3898!
Jeff McBride and Sandip Sen hosted this early episode, and they couldn't get over how clever Kevin's abstract associations were in his bit, "The Boys From Brazil." They talk about how long it can take to make those connections. They then joyfully tear down some Brian Regan and John Mulaney comedy gold.
Jeff McBride discusses how he produces a successful monthly variety show in Las Vegas. Jeff is a three time award winner at the International Grand Prix of Magic in Monte Carlo and is widely recognized as an innovator in contemporary magic. For several years, Jeff headlined at Caesars Magical Empire in Las Vegas, where he was voted critics' choice as Best Magician in Las Vegas. He is also a three-time Guiness World Record holder. Lawrence talks in our second interview about his love for magic, dogmatism, pleasure, making mistakes, about the notion of “tools and not rules”, why we’re all storytelling animals and how Aristotle was a friend to artists everywhere. Jeff McBride Jeff talks about magic mystery and deception and magic as “effect without a casue.” He has plenty of wisdom and insight to share on the art of practice, discipline, and “expert simplicity” and about the power of possibility. Biography Jeff McBride, named Magician of the Year by The Magic Castle in Los Angeles, is recognized as a foremost innovator in contemporary magic. New York Times columnist Glenn Collins writes, "What Mr. McBride gives his audiences is a mesmerizing performance...a magic show that is at once a celebration of mystery and a struggle to understand powerful forces." McBride most recently headlined at Caesars Magical Empire in Las Vegas, where he was voted critics' choice as Best Magician in Las Vegas in the Review-Journal annual poll. He is featured on the PAX TV series, "Masters of Illusion." Earlier this year, McBride previewed his new theatrical show, The Forbidden Secret of Magic with Eugene Burger and Abbi Spinner at Magicopolis magic theatre in Los Angeles, and presented his new grand illusion spectacular, Jeff McBride - Abracadazzle!, to standing ovations at the Claridge in Atlantic City. On television, McBride's spectacular "Burned Alive!" escape highlighted the ABC TV special "Champions of Magic." He is also featured on the current PBS documentary, "The Art of Magic," and on all three episodes of "The Mysteries of Magic" on The Learning Channel. His show McBride - Magic! was the featured attraction at the Monte Carlo Festival of Magic. This followed a featured appearance on "World's Greatest Magicians" for NBC. Earlier that season McBride guest starred on TV's Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as Joran, a role created especially for him. McBride's signature fusion of mask, myth, drama and illusion reflects his lifelong study of magic's multi-cultural roots. His first full-evening show, Mask, Myth & Magic, won acclaim Off-Broadway and on national tour, as well as at arts festivals in Barcelona (for the 1992 Olympics), London, Hong Kong, China, and Bangkok. Prior to going solo, McBride was the opening act of choice for Tina Turner, Diana Ross, and other top stars. He has been profiled in Elle Magazine, Town & Country, Harpers and dozens of other publications worldwide. In addition to his work as a performer, McBride is a much sought-after lecturer and workshop leader for such diverse groups as The Smithsonian, The Disney Institute, the International Brotherhood of Magicians, the Center for Symbolic Studies and others. McBride is founder of The Mystery School, a unique experiential retreat for magicians (and subject of an acclaimed 1994 CBC-TV documentary hosted by Arthur Kent), and creator and co-founder of the WorldMagicsTM Festivals, multi-cultural celebrations of the environment, or "enviro-magic." His video-taped series teaching "The Art of Card Manipulation" is among the best selling magic teaching videos of all time. With Eugene Burger, he has created and teaches regular sessions of "McBride's Master Class" at his home studio in Las Vegas, as well as semi-annual retreats for the further exploration of the magical arts. Ben Rosenfeld joins Sandip Sen and Jeff McBride as they dig into work by George Carlin and David Cross. They also touch on writing material from outrage and working toward funny, through which Ben's dark humor "shines" with incisive analysis about smart comedy, learning your style, and gently misanthropic perspective from his early years in Russia.

On this episode of This Week in Magic, Cameron Ramsay, Scott Wells and I get together with Dan Sperry and Jeff McBride to talk about the upcoming World Magic Seminar. What began as the Desert Close-Up Magic Seminar featuring the great Tony Slydini, with less than 100 attendees in 1978, has now become the premier annual magic event, the World Magic Seminar, with over 1000 attendees, and Las Vegas has become the “Magic Capitol of the World”! The memories made in the past give the Seminar its reputation, but it's the memories to come that make it exciting.
Scott Wells reports from the 65th annual Texas Association of Magicians gathering in Austin, Texas. We were lucky to get interviews with a very diverse group of performers, lecturers and magic celebrities including Michael Webber, James Garriott, Fumio, Hull Youngbood. Marshall Brodien, SAM President mark Weidhass, TAOM Secretary Mary Cay, Oscar Munoz, Jeff McBride, Paul Vigil, Pop Hayden, Sam Sawyers, Wayne Dobson, Pat Hazell and many more!
