Within 2 years, grew that business into one of the top 50 daytime hotspots in America. Marc has helped launch successful entrepreneur coaching programs, small and large companies as well. Global Branding Meets Customer-Focused Creative – Dell Technologies’ Rachael Henke

Rachael Henke’s short title is just “brand” at Dell Technologies. Her formal title is long, but it’s a big job, for a big company: Director of Global Brand Advertising Content and Customer Engagement Storytelling. That means, per Henke, “everything we do is to elevate the brand.” While most everyone has heard of “Dell,” her job is to ensure everyone knows the larger entity – created from the merger with EMC some three years ago -- is actually “Dell Technologies” and that it’s gone from primarily computers to being “an end to end essential technology partner”. While computers are, as Henke says, “still a very critical part of our business, we really want to focus [on the] B2B space, showing how we’re driving innovation and emerging technologies across areas like cloud storage and AI.” For Henke, that means that while being part of the brand team for a 150,000-person global company is impressive enough, she’s also, necessarily, a woman who can use “hyperconverged infrastructure solutions” in a sentence. But it’s still a human-oriented brand, evidenced from top-down actions like Michael Dell donating $100 million dollars to pro social initiatives during our current COVID-19 crisis. So, in Episode 6 of Insider Interviews, Henke explains how her team approaches brand storytelling – turning complicated offerings into human-oriented content. Here’s a topline of our conversation, edited for clarity: “Every day is different”:  Henke’s days involve “conversations about what products are going to launch... and how that will turn into the vision where we're going... a lot of conversations around messaging and with customers to understand how our technology gets used.” Applying Those Conversations To Content: Like TV spots that take the figurative (“is your business going in circles?”) and make it literal, like spokesperson/actor Jeffrey Wright going in circles and upstairs and coming back to the starting point, their B2B brand campaigns aim to showcase how they deliver on solutions, what’s innovative, “and connecting that solution to work for sales teams, too...And If there's a consumer campaign that works really well, it provides lift to our business side as well.” That applies to small business as well: One example is working with ad agency MediaCom and audio company Entercom to create a virtual podcast conference, The PodFerence, to spotlight podcasts on relevant topics for customers. Rinse and Repeat: Henke names brands and marketers she “keeps an eye on” and describes  her own goals to balance creative and data: “One of the challenges that any brand marketer has is how the heck do you measure brand advertising, because you're not necessarily tied to a click, a call, a transactional sale. So we do a lot of measurement ...and also make sure we're not just looking at data in a silo [but working together with other divisions.]” The Media and Marketing for Tomorrow: Will one of the world’s largest tech companies continue to put budget in linear? Henke is bullish on balancing linear and digital, especially when it comes to now on paused live sports. “It’s really timely to ask that because we are a PGA sponsor and have Dell Technologies Match Play which was supposed to take place in March. But I still feel like sponsorships will still be something strong and that we will continue because let's face it, people want sports more than ever.”  We’re looking at continuing with linear, but figuring out where are people still watching? I think CTV and On Demand will absolutely be part of that mix as well. For the future? “We truly believe that because of what has happened globally companies are looking at how they digitally transform in a way that makes sense, but also in a practical way. ...We want to make sure that our brand is there to be that partner for our customers as they need to make changes because the world will be different. My guest is Ed Farley, the global brand strategist who has been head of branding for huge brands like United Way, Humana and Anheuser Busch and has managed brands that extend across the US and around the world. And we're going to talk about that and what it takes to do that. Well, thanks for joining me, Ed, really excited to have you on the podcast.Ed Farley: Hey, it's great to be here. Thanks.Rudy: So you've seen marketing from a big global point of view. And obviously, you've seen these brands evolve over time. Often we talk about what's changed in marketing. But there are some things that have to stay true in terms of branding. And given your your scope and your understanding of branding. What do you think some things are, some elements that ought not change in order to have a strong brand?Ed: It's an interesting question, because for industries, as you had mentioned, I constantly needed to walk around and in re-educate folks with whom I work on what is brand strategy, right? It's not branding, it's a strategy but doesn't need to change is the idea that you need a strategy to inform great work, great messaging, great consumer experience. And that's really all about a disciplined approach to create a brand strategy. And so what I would encourage everyone to do is think about how that strategy gets created and what kind of rigor and discipline goes into that strategy.Rudy: When you say, you have to maintain that rigor to go into brand strategy, what are the some of the steps to make that happen?Ed: A lot of people are talking about purpose-driven brand strategy. And that's important because reality of that is that in today's global marketplace, we've shifted from business to consumer marketing to consumer to business B to C to B to C to B. And so brands are now engaged in daily conversations with consumers who demand experiences on their own terms, and influence others to buy or not to buy. It has an impact on products and services and sales channel partners. And we've really got to remember that it all begins with a story, a story that has meaning and it resonates with audiences with whom you want to do business. You've got to establish the context of your brand strategy. And that requires some evaluation. The first type of evaluation that I would suggest is to understand your own perspective. Pat also served on the Tire Industry Association—Board of Directors, the  Benton Ridge Telephone Company –Board of Directors, the Liberty Benton—Board of Education and the Hancock County Board of Education.   Ryan Goff a resident of Caldwell, Idaho, grew up in the family tire and automotive repair business, Rogers Tire Pros. Ryan attended Boise State University while still working in the family business. He helped to grow and expand the business to two locations. Ryan served on the Tire Pros Western, National Council, and is currently serving on the Tire Pros technology advisory council. His wife Andrea, son Cash and daughter Presley are his world.  In his free time, he enjoys working out doing Cross Fit and enjoying sunny days on the lake. He is a lover of Boise State football and spending time with his family on their boat.   Brad Goff is from Rogers Tire Pros located in Caldwell Idaho. His father started the company in 1978 as mostly a front-end and alignment specialty shop. Brad grew up working in the business from the time he was little and by the age of 12 was changing tires and doing many tasks in the shop and learning as he went along.  In 1990, Brad joined the business full time.  In 2005 expansion plans started and they opened their Caldwell location at almost 15,000 square feet in 2008 and expanded again in 2018, opening their second location in the fall of 2018 located in Meridian, Idaho.   Keith Tucker is a 2nd Generation Independent tire dealer. He started changing tires on a 20/20 Coats part-time on summer breaks at 15 yrs old. Keith attended college at DSCC. He worked with his Dad, Jere Tucker and his brother in the family tire business. During that time was certified in alignment and suspension. On September 1, 1991, Keith partnered with his Dad and his brother Jeff in a 2-bay retail tire & service location named Triple T Tire & Alignment. With their new adventure, Keith did everything from tire changer, lube tech, alignment tech,  service truck, brake tech, customer service and many more. Triple T Tire sold all major and some minor brand tires.  In 1995, they relocated to 8 bay shop, with new equipment and designed for efficiency.  In 2002 and 2004, the family acquired additional locations through acquisition. In 2004, they merged the 3 Dyersburg locations into 2. Today the family owns 3 locations in West TN, and 2 in Dyersburg and 1 in Paris, TN. Both markets are farm and rural markets. As the business evolved Keith has seen extreme changes in the industry. The management team is working to spend more time working ON the business rather than IN the business. Talking Points: 5 S origin (sometimes referred to as Kaizen, continuous improvement) Japenese factories were all about continuous improvement. Experiencing unprecedented efficiency, safety, growth. 5S is credited with helping Japanese factories eclipse American Industrial success. Adopted by US Manufacturers with the same dramatic gains. 5 S Overview Sort Tidiness – throw away rubbish and unrelated materials.  Jan-Benedict (J.B.) Steenkamp is the C. Knox Massey Distinguished Professor and Area Chair of Marketing at the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School. A highly regarded expert in his field, he specializes in global marketing, branding, and emerging markets and strategy. In addition, he is the author of three books, the latest of which is titled “Global Brand Strategy: World-wise Marketing in the Age of Branding.” In this podcast, Steenkamp, while discussing topics and ideas from his most recent book, provides a sort of toolkit for marketers, including four key takeaways: (1) The need for diverse leadership teams in managing a global brand; (2) Clear accountability and quantifiable metrics; (3) The need for local flexibility within a common framework; and, lastly, (4) How Frank Zappa got it right — we’re only in it for the money.
