Plus, Mark Carney is assuming control over the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada before he's sworn in as prime minister, adding Marco Mendicino as his chief of staff, shuffling Steven Guilbeault to a different department and bringing back former attorney general David Lametti. And finally, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio along with the foreign ministers of other G7 nations are in Quebec for a summit ahead of the G7 leaders' meeting in Alberta in June. Topics at the meeting include support for Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, stability in the Indo-Pacific region, ongoing crises in Haiti, Venezuela and security challenges in Africa.

Greg Brady and the panel of: Steve Paikin Author and Broadcaster, host of TVO's ‘The Agenda' Chloe Brown, policy analyst and former Toronto mayoral candidate. Discuss: 1. Regardless of polls all over the map, and the challenges afoot - I think two things are clear about the upcoming federal election. It is a TRUE heavyweight fight...we all think the "next" election is a critical one in turning the country's sails in a certain direction - but this is going to generate a ton of interest, eclipse voter apathy and indifference, and we probably will all be sick of the slogans, the platforms, and the mud-wrestling. Yes? Huge interest? Especially in stark contrast to the recent provincial election? 2. It's a bit inside - but the first two appointments by Mark Carney.....old-school Liberal cabinet ministers who fell well out of favour in controversial circumstances in the Trudeau era - Marco Mendicino as Chief of Staff to Carney, and David Lametti, the Justice Minister who had some embarrassing secret texts revealed in the Freedom Convoy/Emergencies Act era when the Inquiry happened regarding government direction. Like, right away - not sure you're telling Canada...you're moving along and so many lessons have been learned! 3. OIivia Chow did not attend the scene of the shooting in Scarborough this weekend.....I know, I know - we spend a lot of time on where she is, what she goes to, and how she explains it away afterwards - her myriad of explanations for snubbing the October 7th vigil were......not awesome - what about this one? 4. We need more public bathrooms AND garbage bins in Toronto - this gets us on the road to one of the two, does it not??? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

If you thought you'd heard the end of convoy politics, think again. The federal government's argument that it was justified in using the Emergencies Act to dispel the convoy protests in early 2022 was dealt a blow this week. We speak with the former attorney general who helped invoke the act — and find out why he's now leaving politics. Then, two journalists dissect the politics of Tucker Carlson's controversial tour of Alberta, where he sat down with Premier Danielle Smith. We'll also take a look at the government's decision to cap study permits for international students — and the waves that will make in both the education community and provincial economies. Plus — Ed Broadbent's death has sparked some reflection over the NDP's past, present and future. Two party strategists sit down to discuss where the party goes from here. This episode features the voices of: - David Lametti, Liberal MP and former minister of justice - The CBC's Jason Markusoff - Shannon Proudfoot, Globe and Mail - Alain Roy, vice-president, Colleges and Institutes of Canada - Theo Argitis, Compass Rose Group - Mike McKinnon, senior consultant, Enterprise Canada - Melanie Richer, senior consultant, Earnscliffe Strategies

Justin Trudeau has made a change to almost every single position in his cabinet, while keeping Chrystia Freeland as finance minister and Steven Guilbeault as environment minister, among a few other people. Marco Mendicino and David Lametti are among those out of cabinet altogether, while Bill Blair has been promoted to defense minister. Most importantly, Trudeau himself remains in power, so will anything change? True North's Andrew Lawton discusses with the Macdonald-Laurier Institute's Aaron Wudrick. Also, CBC has run a hit piece on a group of Christians who've decided to get involved in politics, accusing them of advocating for a world that is “unsafe” for “marginalized groups.” 4 My Canada founder Faytene Grasseschi joins The Andrew Lawton Show to respond. This week on Open Sources Guelph, we're going to play the beautiful game: Amateur political punditry! In that context, we're also going to talk about all the issues around that other game being played on the world stage this week, and we're also going to talk about the national stage and the latest moves at a certain inquiry, plus the local stage with another new city councillor who'll talk about a very big first meeting. This Thursday, November 24, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: It's All Been Leading to This. It's the last week of testimony for the public inquiry into the use of the Emergencies Act, and it's probably the most consequential one. All your favourite cabinet ministers will be testifying - Bill Blair, Marco Mendicino, Dominic LeBlanc, David Lametti, Anita Anand, Omar Alghabra, Chrystia Freeland, and then on Friday, "Mr. Big" himself, Justin Trudeau. We'll talk about the latest developments. ¡FIFA la Revolución! The FIFA world Cup has begun in Qatar, but the first several days have been marked with completely predictable scandals: They promised beer, but there was no beer served. They promised to let up on some of their anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric, but a man in a rainbow t-shirt was barred from entering a stadium. Even the ticket app crashed on one point this week. So why are we indulging this thing? hiCarly! The first real city council meeting happened this week, and it had a some consequential implications about what the City of Guelph can do for the next four year. But it was nothing that council did, it was about the Government of Ontario's Bill 23. This week, we're joined by new Ward 2 Councillor Carly Klassen who will talk about her reaction to the implications of Bill 23 and other council business. Open Sources is live on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca at 5 pm on Thursday.

Documents published by the Public Order Emergency Commission show cabinet ministers Marco Mendicino and David Lametti talking about sending in Canadian Armed Forces tanks to deal with the Freedom Convoy – though Lametti said this was just "banter" between friends. True North's Andrew Lawton said the 'just kidding' defense doesn't pass muster when the government ended up using wartime powers to deal with the protest. Also, the Liberals are trying to expand their gun ban to include all semi-automatic guns. Rod Giltaca from the Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights joins the show live to discuss why this will do nothing but criminalize law-abiding gun owners. Learn more about your ad choices. The privacy regime in Canada got a big shot in the arm, as on the 16th of June, Bill C-27 was introduced by David Lametti, the Attorney General of Canada and Minister of Justice, and Francois-Philippe Champagne, who is the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry. The new Digital Charter Implementation Act, 2022, is all set to revamp the way Canadians view digital privacy. It has three different pieces of legislation which are the Artificial Intelligence and Data Act, the Personal Information and Data Protection Tribunal Act, and the Consumer Privacy Protection Act. The three legislations aim to strengthen Canada's data privacy framework, especially making changes to the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act. It will also be recreating new regulations to ensure that AI is responsibly developed and will continue implementing the Digital Charter of Canada. The new proposals are all set to introduce new changes to how privacy is enforced throughout the nation. This marks a revolutionary change for Canadians as they will get a new lease of life with the protection of their personal information. It is good for the public, and the response will be favourable as everyone wants to ensure that their private data is well protected. The Digital Charter will bring about a new era of data protection for Canadians and will ensure that the data privacy laws in Canada are in line with international standards. It is the right of every Canadian to seek new avenues to protect their online data, and that is precisely what this new Digital Charter will look to present to Canadians. It will take into account Canadian values and will represent them to the best of its abilities while ensuring that people are getting their money's worth when it comes to safeguarding their private information. The Consumer Privacy Protection Act The introduction of the Digital Charter Implementation Act of 2022 is aimed at ensuring that Canadians are equipped with the latest data privacy features. It is the right of every Canadian to feel safe and trust that their information isn't being misused by anyone. The information Canadians choose to share with businesses should be kept in a manner that no one gets access to them and they should be used in a convenient method that ensures the safekeeping of their personal information. It is also designed to provide businesses with a clearer set of rules that supports their efforts to use Canadian data for their purposes. It will also present them with a viable solution for developing AI in a responsible manner and recognize that the information shared by young people shouldn't be used for nefarious purposes. It is meant to be safeguarded and prevent anyone from misusing this information in a manner that would harm individuals. The Personal Information and Data Protection Tribunal Act The second part of the Digital Charter Act will see the establishment of a new tribunal that will be charged with putting up financial penalties on all organizations that are caught violating the CPPA. The compliance with the CPPA will be overseen by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, and they will also have the authority to issue orders against companies, which include the power to order companies to stop their collection of personal data. They will also be making recommendations for the different levels of fines they can charge companies with, but it will be the task of the tribunal to identify what monetary penalties they are charging companies that break the rules. The penalties are thought to be extremely steep and they will only get worse with time as you will have to come down hard on repeat offenders. All organizations that don't comply with the rules and regulations outlined in the act can face penalties that go up to 5% of their global revenue, or they will have to pay $25 million, whichever is greater. The fine is substantial enough to put a dent in their earnings and stop them from sharing th...

For January 27, 2018.... Christmas came late for me (or really, really early), as we learn that Justin Trudeau has unexpectedly replaced Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould with David Lametti. Quack Tracks A judge has ruled that the Stephans will not have their legal fees paid for by the Province of Alberta. The Regressive Left Files Comedian Zach Poitras has been denied a spot to perform at the Université du Québec à Montréal. The reason? He's white and has dreadlocks. The event, the Snowflake Comedy Club, could not have been named more appropriately. Catholic Watch A representative of Alberta's Catholic school system says “The courts have told us that we have to be Catholic or there's no reason for us to exist.” Guess what? There's no reason for you to exist. A Catholic priest in Calgary's NE quadrant, Malcolm Joe D'Souza, has been charged with sexual assault. I'd chalk this up to a one-off, but over a 26-year span he had been moved between a number of parishes in southern Alberta. Sound familiar? And, yes. This was on Bishop Fred Henry's watch. Embattled ex-Cardinal Wuerl claims lapses in memory over having heard about sexual abuse allegations against Theodore McCarrick. Someone should give Wuerl a Rolodex to keep them all straight. Miscellaneous... The two men behind the free Toronto "newspaper" Your Ward News which, among other things, wants rape decriminalized and claims a bloodthirsty Jewish conspiracy is afoot, will appeal their hate speech conviction. Totally forgetting Jesus was himself a Jew, one of the defendants said, "We have Jesus on our side." Ironeeeeee!
