Mike takes a look at the 12 most profitable movies of all times. These extraordinary films prove you don't need a hundred-million-dollar budget to break the box office. He shares how all 12 movies cost about $10 million to make... and they pulled in nearly $1.9 billion from My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Obsession to Rocky and Paranormal Activity. In the Movie Review, Mike talks about The Invite with Seth Rogen, Olivia Wilde, Penélope Cruz, Edward Norton. It’s about a dinner party that spirals into unexpected places when a couple invite their enigmatic neighbors over. Have they reignited the spark in their troubled marriage or lit the match that burns it all down? He talks about the anxiety the movie caused him, the fantastic score and why it’s one of the most absurdly beautiful movies he’s seen this year. In the Trailer Park, Mike blind reacts to Avengers: Doomsday. Which is about heroes from three different worlds must unite when they're thrust together to confront a catastrophic danger that could destroy everything they know. In this episode of SuperHero Homies, we break down every major reveal, hidden detail, Easter egg, theory, and shocking moment from the brand-new Avengers: Doomsday trailer. From Doctor Doom's mysterious plan to Thor's long-awaited return as a serious leader, we're diving deep into everything Marvel Studios has shown us and what it could mean for the future of the MCU. Is Steve Rogers really back... or are we looking at an evil multiversal variant? Could an evil Captain America actually wield Mjolnir? What are Incursions, and why are they so important to Marvel Comics and the Multiverse Saga? We answer all of those questions and much more. In This Episode We Discuss: Our full Avengers: Doomsday trailer reaction Doctor Doom's possible motivations and master plan Why Thor finally feels like a true leader again Steve Rogers' shocking appearance Is this the real Captain America or a Variant? Could an evil Steve Rogers lift Mjolnir? Marvel Comics history behind that possibility What Incursions are and why they're so dangerous Hidden Easter eggs throughout the trailer Characters that are noticeably absent Which heroes and villains we still expect to appear The trailer's biggest action scenes Our favorite moments Our biggest concerns Is Marvel relying on nostalgia... or building something genuinely special? While we're incredibly excited for Avengers: Doomsday, we also discuss the possibility that Marvel Studios could be leaning a little too heavily into nostalgia. Can the MCU deliver another Avengers: Endgame-level event, or will this become another example of fan service outweighing storytelling? We explore both sides of the debate. BONUS DISCUSSION: Clayface Trailer Before wrapping up, we also react to the brand-new Clayface trailer from DC Studios! We discuss: Clayface's comic book origin Why we're excited about the body horror direction The revenge-driven story How faithful the movie appears to be Why Clayface could become one of DC's biggest surprises Between Avengers: Doomsday and Clayface, comic book fans have a lot to look forward to, and we can't wait to see where both Marvel Studios and DC Studios go next. Who knew The Guys were handymen? Mechanics. Consultants, if you will. And this week they are here to fix Dr. Who. Of course, it's mostly Robbie with his hands on the dials, but Art and Jay do have opinions. Is it back to basics? Pleasing the core fans? More tech and modern effects, or less? They all agreed that characters and story make the difference. And they are willing to move to England and be co-show-runners if the BBC will cover the tab. Since that's somewhat unlikely, there is a backup plan: travel just a couple of hours and check out the new Lego store in our capital city, the first in the state. And they can watch trailers along the way: Doomsday, Spider-Man, and even the scary Jessica Chastain movie. Listen to this episode (and the 390+ that came before it) and perhaps you, too, can fix Guys of a Certain Age.
The Film School Janitors discuss ideas and theories after watching the AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY trailer, as well as whatever wanders into their brains!
Opener: Thief's Market Closer: 3D printing and game aids/enhancements During the summer I always get in plenty of gaming…but not always with my normal game group. Often I'm away on vacation, or at a game convention. Or they are. Regardless, it means I get together with those local friends a little less often, and I miss it. Of course I enjoy going on my own vacations, but it'll also be nice when things get back to normal. This shouldn't shock anyone…I'm very much a "back to normal" kind of guy. This episode is normal in the sense that it's just me, talking about stuff that interests me…possibly more than it interests others! Between last time & this the Spiel des Jahres and other prizes were announced: Jinxo, Rebirth, and Mookie Island. All great games. This year I watched the awards ceremony live on YouTube, which was "simulcast" in AI-translated English voiceover. At least I think that's how that worked. BGG was the host for the English broadcast, and I think there were other options, e.g. in Portuguese. Very cool. Also, as much as I feel I already know about the SdJ organization and its awards, I still learned a lot from listening to the audio versions of Oliver Kinne's outstanding game journalism on the subject. These are short and easy to take in. Highly recommended for anyone who is avid about our hobby. I think it's required reading/listening for anyone who has a podcast or blog or video show about boardgaming. https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2026/06/09/spiel-des-jahres-th... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYYEXheFKkA Similarly useful were Ben Maddox's outstanding interviews of the nominated designers. He did this on his excellent 5 Games for Doomsday podcast, which is also available on YouTube (the way of podcasts, these days… sigh). If you listen to one, listen to the Donald X Vaccarino interview. If you listen to two, add the Reiner Knizia one. But go ahead and listen to all of them. Really worthwhile. Kudos to these other game journalists, Ben & Oliver! After that I talk about what makes "a Mark Johnson game," because I sometimes hear that folks are surprised I play any long, complicated games at all. I do, and I also play new games. This goes to explain some of why I do, and which ones I enjoy. -Mark

It has been a long time since we have talked about the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But this week we have a lot to talk about. And it is more than just the Doomsday trailer and the upcoming Spider-Man movie. On the plus side, it seems like the MCU may be closer to the darker Marvel that people have dreamed about for years. That being said, we also heard that with the last Doctor Strange movie and The New Mutants. Only time will tell, but we are interested in what is happening. We have nothing against toilet humor and low hanging fruit. Troma is responsible for some of our favorite movies. And just generally speaking it is good to have a palette cleanser. Not every movie can be high art or a thrill a minute slasher. Bowels of Hell is a one joke movie. Literally. Every single gag in the Brazilian import is centered around shit. This is not the problem, however. It actually builds well to a pretty cool ending. But the ride there is an arduous one. In between the comedy are long stretches of exposition that fail deliver the message the movie seems to be trying to make. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. This week we're doing our annual SDCC download, and there is a lot to unpack. We start with Avengers: Doomsday, because obviously, and get into the very Dr. Doom-heavy footage from Hall H. From there we hop to Disney+'s Percy Jackson, which just dropped a season 3 teaser and a release date (November 20!) that has book readers buzzing about how accurate this season might actually be. Then we talking about Mike Flanagan's Carrie reboot — yes, with cell phones, yes, we have thoughts — landing on Prime October 7, plus Matthew Lillard's casting as the principal, which, honestly, correct choice. And because no Comic-Con recap is complete without a little discourse, we get into Kevin Feige comparing the Doctor Doom buildup to Thanos and why fans are very much not here for it. Rounding things out, we've got Spaceballs news (Rick Moranis showed UP, people), a surprisingly moving story about how fan campaigning got Coyote vs. Acme un-shelved and into actual theaters, and just an overall reminder that this fandom stuff still means something to people. We close things out with recs: Laura's hydrating her face with the Elf Holy Hydration moisturizer, Eric's deep in Star Trek mode with the Improvised Star Trek podcast (start on episode 85, "The Search for Sock"), and Pam wants you to buy local produce when you can to avoid the current explosive diarrhea outbreak sweeping the nation. And in this week's installment of After Dark... the girls haven't had a chance to catch up on life things in a while!
