EP143 - Conversations on Race, Privilege, & Inclusion with Linal Harris We don't know what it's like to live as another person. When I get pulled over, I'm upset about having to pay a ticket or that my insurance might go up. But if I was black and I got pulled over I'm more likely to be worried that I might get shot, beaten, or harassed. That is my privilege. If you aren't black, you don't know what it's like to be pulled over by police. If you aren't a woman, you don't know the fear a woman might have walking through a parking lot at night. If you aren't brown, you don't know what it is like to be mistaken for a terrorist, illegal, or even a thug. If you are straight, you can't imagine the challenges associated with telling your parents you are queer. We think our realities are the truth, but they are only our perspective and our truth. Until we look and listen through the lens of another, especially those different from us we can't possibly understand their experience or reality. My hope is that through hearing the perspectives of those that are systematically oppressed, disenfranchised, or often encounter racism and prejudice, we can learn to empathize, open our hearts and our minds to their realities and do what is necessary to make the system, our society, and the world a place of equality, love, and inclusion. Today we are joined by Linal Harris, Linal is a (PCC) Professional Certified Coach and the founder and president of Insights 4 Life Coaching, a high performance and executive coaching firm that uses an ontological approach to accelerate leadership and personal development. Prior to becoming a coach Linal held the role of Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer at U.S. Cellular, and has led and built teams across the world. Additionally, Linal is a husband, father, the host of "Inspirational Perspective" a radio show on WVON 1690 AM, a motivational speaker, the author of "Slay Your Goals, 5 Simple Tips For Achieving Your Life Goals", and hosts the annual Murder Mediocrity Summit.
